If you actually dry the seed about 2-3 days and peel the outer brown shell it helps the seed begin to sprout and split open faster, and I’ve learned from my family in Mexico who are avocado farmers that you want seeds that are at least 30 grams in weight. The smaller ones have like less possibilities of the plant growing and giving fruit
I've tried growing many many avocado seeds in the water this way and I had no luck with any of them. They wouldn't even grow. I tried a new method of putting them in a damp paper towel and inserted them into a zip lock and left them by a sunny window. 100% of the avocados started growing within 1 month!!!! Super easy and 100% effective for me!!!
Honestly I think smartest thing I did was to buy a grow light for $24 USD. They have them with timers on them and they simply clip onto the side of a cabinet. Me, I have a pot that I store all of my immediate-use utensils and that happens to be sturdy enough to hold the clamp. So I've got mine to grow just at the bottom of a glass cup, using the grow light set to a timer, and spritz them twice per day with water.
I have just done this for the first time and have had a lot of success. It's taken about 12 weeks. Once it starts to grow it shoots up fast. I have a beautiful root system and and excellent stem with fully lush leaves. My method was to allow the seed to dry for about 3 days. Peel the skin. Place three tooth picks in the seed. I have used a 1 liter Gatorade bottle giving plenty of room for roots to grow and stay straight. The setup was placed on the window ledge during an Adelaide summer. The window ledge does not get a full afternoon sun. It really begun to shoot up when the weather cooled to 25 - 28°C days. It's now time to plant it. Wish me luck.
If you put the Avo the right way up they are more likely to sprout. The large side must be faced down and the pointy tip must be upwards. They must be the same position as a waterdrop falling.
Awesome video. I started growing some from seed and have found that you peel the brown skin off the seed they grow much faster. Hope they are doing well.
My first attempt of growing an avocado (beginning of this year/mid year) I'd left the skin on, used 3 toothpicks and small glass, and putting it in my bedroom as it really warm and gets a lot of light in there, I didn't notice much within the first month but would regularly change water to give it fresh nutrition but I also used baby bio plant food to help it. The mistake I made was when I potted it, I over watered it and it got rootrot, pot was ceramic and not one with the drain holes in it. It grew really fast and tall, I was proud of myself for doing it but disappointed with myself for over watering it.
I started doing the same and now, its about 13-15ft tall (took almost 2years from seed to tree) and again started second one from seed. I love it when you see the plants..I am not going to stop whenever I see 🥑 😂
@@flyingdutchman2556 I am gonna tell you my date of the plant: 24th Oct 2017- Day 1 of seed 19th Jan 2018- Put soil on avocado seed as I saw the root come.. 19th March 2018- planted in my garden 23rd November 2020- still waiting for Avocado 😂 well, as it was my first time, I didn't check the roots so I think it comes within 3 weeks ..
I started 2 with the toothpick method. Same day, same location. One cracked and put down roots after 8 weeks, the other is just cracking now (nearly 4 mos.) They definitely take time but it's fun to see the progress.
I recommend a different seed holder, since the roots might get too wide to take them from the holder without damaging them. Maybe a holder in 2 pieces that can connect and break when you need?
Great video. I had one 4 ft took me about 4 months and it just all of a sudden died. Letting the seed dry and peeling the outer shell off worked for me. Gonna try again.
Great video. Only suggestion is that you pull seeds from very RIPE fruit and peel the outer black/red skin off of them before following your steps.. This will give you a dramatically higher success rate in sprouting any fruit tree seeds, some seeds such as cherries will just rot without peeling them first...oranges...apples, they all benefit from a little preemptive surgery😄😂
I think my favorite part of this video is when you said, "when you have a 3D printer you find an excuse to 3D print anything" 👍 good job on the seeds.. peel the brown skin 1st though, that gave me better results
Great realistic information. I’ve been waiting for my pits to do something for a month...nothing yet. You’re video gives me hope. I’m hanging on for more time. Thanks 😊
I did that cup/water method & stick some seeds around my jade plants & jus saw 4 avocados seeding from the pot soil 4 inches high while the seeds in the cup still rooting, so I jus removed all the seeds from the cup & stick them to directly to the potted soil. So it's easier to jus stick them to soil & water it every couple days, but make sure u peel the skin 1st.
TY for your truthful video. Although it is a bit disheartening, it is TRUTH. I have 3 seeds with the toothpick & now I am prepared for any letdown. TY But MAYBE, one with GROW!! YES

Argh thanks for this...yesterday I hot fed up and threw out ny seed after waiting a month. Now, I'm seeing this and now realising that my seed was actually growing within it's timeframe, because the seed actually started to split open but nothing was coming out....I guess just yet
I have one now try soaking the seed in the morning in really hot water an letting it dry at night in paper towels an baggie try this for a week then peel the seed an pop it on tooth picks
You guys the seed is yellow not brown. You need to clean the brown husk off for the water to actually work on the avocado seed. The husk waterproof it if you don’t remove it.
I wrap the seed in damp paper towel, throw it in a sealable plastic bag and toss it in a darkened cupboard. Two to three weeks later, the seed has sprouted and then I put in in a glass container in a sunny spot. Much quicker results that way.
Your video is encouraging, it is 6 weeks exactly today and I do not have any growth. The pit looks good, split, you can see a round nut-sized object in the middle. So it could still sprout?
I had a nice one I did last year. Started in water and once it got big I planted it in dirt, it got to be a decent little size, about 1 1/2-2 ft tall with a thick trunk but unfortunately it died eventually.
Now you need to start adding dirt to your water cups a little at a time until you end up replacing all water for dirt before you transplant it. About 2 tbsp. of dirty the rest water, then 4 tbsp. Then water and so on. I grow a tree sized so far and they don't all grow. Good luck!
Cool little seed starter tool. You should get a patent and sell those! It could even be used for rooting other woody cuttings and plants, ie: rosemary.
I didn't make the seed holder. There are many designs that people created and shared for free. If you have a 3D printer, you can make as many as you want. Here's a collection of many different designs people made: www.thingiverse.com/glitchpudding/collections/avocado
I've used the toothpick method and I also used the wrap-in-a-moist paper towel and store them in a dark place until they root method, and also started them directly in wet potting soil. Had some that grew almost a foot tall, then their leaves (they were huge) died and then the stem died. Each one seems to decide how long it will live, and is not influenced by the success of its neighbor. Storage and transportation conditions from the tree to the grocery (maybe micro- changes) must affect their growing ability since most people seem to duplicate planting conditions every time. Wonder if a seed could be split open and the micro-root-stem (m-r-s) could be examined to see if it was actually alive. The plant probably doesn't need the food from both sides of the seed. Or maybe just get rid of both sides and plant (?) the (m-r-s). 99% of the seed is probably not needed, and may even get a water-disease that is transmitted to the m-r-s. I have read that the thin brown shell will rot and maybe the m-r-s will be damaged by rot products. So an experiment may be to plant the m-r-s in various soils / artificial media using various liquids - water, water with liquid fertilizer, and water with "plant starter." I assume the seeds from avocados that fall from the trees will sprout by themselves, so there can't be too much laboratory science required. But why can't we get 100% yield from our toothpick method?

I've had success of growing my first avocado beginning/mid year last year or this year, you need to have patience of growing seeds especially avocados. Unfortunately I potted it in a ceramic pot and not a plastic pot with drainage to controlled the amount of water I put in it. Now attempting my second avocado, differently
Peel off the skin and completely chop off the bottom 1/3rd.then put it in the water with toothpicks or whatever! this has worked for me every time and have even seen the first roots in just a couple weeks. Try it!!!
I Need Advice! I have an avocado I sprouted in a glass jar with toothpicks. It's still in water... It's about 2½ feet tall, 10 leaves. There is a healthy looking smooth white root growing right now but the old roots are a very dark brown, bumpy texture... They look diseased, but I don't know if that's actually what they're supposed to look like.? Probably not... I ran cool water over it in the sink and some of the brown roots easily broke off. I was trying to find out if the brown stuff was like coating the root so I could wipe it off but no such luck, it's the whole thing. So is my little tree salvageable or should I throw it away? I don't want to plant it in soil if it's all diseased... Thanks!
You Need a hotter place to make the seeds sprout, otherwise thew will not grow well. I am in a very hot place , and the only seed i planted grew immedeately. in 2 months my seed grew about 30cm. I changed the water every 2 days, and I change the toothpicks every month otherwise they rot.Remove and clean pit You'll need to start by removing the pit from the avocado carefully (without cutting it), and then washing it clean of all the avocado fruit (often it helps to soak the pit in some water for a few minutes and then scrub all the remaining fruit off). Be careful not to remove the brown skin on the pit - that's the seed cover. good Job anyway.
Hey Dave, I do 3d. Can you send me your specs on your setup? This might be a great project to do w my son while we're practicing 'safe at home'. Or just sell a few of those - I can see that a few are asking you.. I know it's probably not a cost-effective things to sell these, so maybe just mark it up to pay for your supplies? ...or maybe just pub the .sla file? A friend of mine has a 3D printer. Cheers, and thanks for putting out the video and explaining things. I've got a few Sprouts myself just by putting them in the bottom of a cup and filling up halfway, although I just had to pull it out and set it up properly because the roots are pushing the seed over, lol.
There's lots of 3d models people have drawn and shared for free online: www.thingiverse.com/tag:avocado I was going to record another video answering a lot of questions people have had, one of them being about selling the holders. But i wouldn't 3d print them, it takes too long. I would look into injection molding. So in a month or so, i should have a follow up video (or 2) answering what you just asked.
I got lucky and cracked open one that was all ready rooting inside the avocado (put it stright in the ground with High quality soil) it's been two years and it's 6 feet all ready with a trunk the size thicker then my thumb my sister stole the two plants i had going
i soak mine in hot water an dried out at night after about a week I peeled the skin an did the toothpick method another week later the middle loosened up I opened it up a bit each day till the split got to half an inch now it's an inch an I see tap root an a sprout sometimes a lil force needs to happen
I use the plastic mcdonalds cup. I just cut the x lines longer and pop the seed in through the x and pop the lid back on the cup. I keep them on the kitchen window sill to catch the sun and move them at night to the counter
Great ------------ my problem with the water ------------ it become full of fungus in the water --- PLEASE who you treat its water all the time before you planted in soil AND please what kinds of soil you planted in THANKS A LOT in anticipation
Today I happened to get a avocado and when i cut it open the seed had already cracked but no shoots yet, so I'll see if it grows any more with this method
There's been quite a few people saying i should sell them. I'm not going to write up here everything i've done, i might make a follow up video. But i've printed about 10 of the holders on my 3D printer. They take like 1 hour to print each. With all the responses from people asking where to get them or that i should sell them, i did actually look into what it would take. Like finding a local injection molding company, having them make like 1,000, getting on Amazon Retailer and selling them through there. So the short answer for now is, no, i don't make or sell them. But there's a small chance that in the future i might try selling them. Until then, you could always find someone with a 3d printer and ask them to print a couple for you. A roll of filament only cost like $20 for cheap PLA or ABS. And i bet you could print about 500 holders in one roll. But it would take 500 hours.
my avocado seed is confusing me a lot because it has roots coming out both the bottom AND top, as well as a little stem at the top o_O Do I clip those extra roots at the top off or leave them?
I know usually the seed splits open and i can SEE the root from the top, but i've never had the root come out of the top. Maybe it's the stem you see? Either way, i would just leave it, but i'm no expert.
That’s happened to me too but it only happens to me when the seed is not sitting upright in water or soil etc. Just plant it in soil and it will sort itself out. Oh wait this is old lol ya probably already done that by now 😂
When the seed becomes black, you have to clean the surface with a towel gently. Never le water become green. You have to cut the stem in half when it’s 10-12 inches high. The same for the second stem and the third and so on... The fruit are rarely edible. It is just for the show and as hobby.

I just watched your video about earbuds connecting and omg your my favorite person right now because I’ve been trying to get them to work for days and your thing worked! Thank you so much also this video is so cool! Your should sell the little holders the seeds sit in!
Brilliant. You should sell these
great video...thank you.
How soon after the root comes down do you put it in the ground?
I started mine as well. I cant tell if it healthy or not. One of the sprouts is white one is brown. There seems to be some white spots on it.
White spots on the roots tend to be new root nodes. Keep an eye on it, new secondary roots often form from those white spots... this is a good thing
Great tips 👍🏼🤠
Thanks!
Do you have to change the water to make it fresh and oxygen rich?
If so, now often?
You Need a hotter place to make the seeds sprout, otherwise thew will not grow well. I am in a very hot place , and the only seed i planted grew immedeately. in 2 months my seed grew about 30cm. I changed the water every 2 days, and I change the toothpicks every month otherwise they rot.Remove and clean pit
You'll need to start by removing the pit from the avocado carefully (without cutting it), and then washing it clean of all the avocado fruit (often it helps to soak the pit in some water for a few minutes and then scrub all the remaining fruit off). Be careful not to remove the brown skin on the pit - that's the seed cover. good Job anyway.
its normal with seeds they dont all sprout i got 15 acorns and only 9 grew. some do some dont. going to try advocado
There's lots of 3d models people have drawn and shared for free online: www.thingiverse.com/tag:avocado
I was going to record another video answering a lot of questions people have had, one of them being about selling the holders. But i wouldn't 3d print them, it takes too long. I would look into injection molding.
So in a month or so, i should have a follow up video (or 2) answering what you just asked.
The ones that have not sprouted, turn upside down. This caused sprouting for me. Took 2 mo. Changing water every other day.
I got lucky and cracked open one that was all ready rooting inside the avocado (put it stright in the ground with High quality soil) it's been two years and it's 6 feet all ready with a trunk the size thicker then my thumb
my sister stole the two plants i had going
i soak mine in hot water an dried out at night after about a week I peeled the skin an did the toothpick method another week later the middle loosened up I opened it up a bit each day till the split got to half an inch now it's an inch an I see tap root an a sprout sometimes a lil force needs to happen
mines a month old wish me luck
I want one or two or three of those 3D thingies.
I use the plastic mcdonalds cup. I just cut the x lines longer and pop the seed in through the x and pop the lid back on the cup. I keep them on the kitchen window sill to catch the sun and move them at night to the counter
Great ------------ my problem with the water ------------ it become full of fungus in the water --- PLEASE who you treat its water all the time before you planted in soil AND please what kinds of soil you planted in
THANKS A LOT in anticipation
you can dump out the water and refill it every week
@@DaveWirth thank you very much for your valuable information
You should make the rings clip together or you will have problems to remove them before planting your trees.
I'm having so much trouble figuring out the bottom and top half of the seed!
Pointy end goes up. Here's an update to the most common questions i got: ua-cam.com/video/aEF-YoG3OvI/v-deo.html
Today I happened to get a avocado and when i cut it open the seed had already cracked but no shoots yet, so I'll see if it grows any more with this method
I floated mine on a piece of foam in my fish tank and it worked but it was upside down and still sprouted .
Would love to get a hold on one of your prototype
You can...if you have a 3D printer. (and i didn't draw it)

Thanks for sharing.
Update please? What happened to ya avo seedlings? Are they still alive? What climate are u in btw?
Thanks for sharing
I just stick mine in the ground they grow easily 😊
Would you mind sharing the file or how to 3D print those rings? I’ve never experience with 3D printed and figures this would be a great start
I'll put this in the description too, but here's the one i used:

Its been 10 days and the bottom of the seed is super slimy.. and it looks like mold around the bottom... time to start over?
Some people suggested to change the water and clean off the slime when that happens.
Can you do an update video on the avocados?
Avocado grows on tropics, Caribbean, Central America, whenever the sun is full
The seeds didn't sprout because you have them submerged them upside down. 1:48 Narrow part is the topwhere the stem shoots out.
Also nice holder you've printed :)
wow nice job
Do you sell the seed holders you created? I'd happily buy some!
Nice info, but sounds like a commercial for his plant stands vs. toothpicks
my avocado seed is confusing me a lot because it has roots coming out both the bottom AND top, as well as a little stem at the top o_O Do I clip those extra roots at the top off or leave them?
I know usually the seed splits open and i can SEE the root from the top, but i've never had the root come out of the top. Maybe it's the stem you see?
Either way, i would just leave it, but i'm no expert.
Dave Wirth thanks! I’ll leave it just to be safe
That’s happened to me too but it only happens to me when the seed is not sitting upright in water or soil etc. Just plant it in soil and it will sort itself out. Oh wait this is old lol ya probably already done that by now 😂
Can this also be done with chestnut seeds?
When the seed becomes black, you have to clean the surface with a towel gently. Never le water become green. You have to cut the stem in half when it’s 10-12 inches high. The same for the second stem and the third and so on... The fruit are rarely edible. It is just for the show and as hobby.
The leaves are edible.
Started the gets cups ready while watching this. Then we said 2-3 years and threw it all away. Corona quarantine sucks

You should try shark tank with your creation.
You could have used plastic egg tray holders put a hole in the bottom of them
Id like to buy the holders
You also need to pick of the brown coat for the best results.
It'll really grow.
