      The Prime R2 series are absolutely awesome now after inheriting C.L.E.A.N. which is arguably the best feature from the Punch line. The Punch series Sound Quality is a step-up with Class-AB on stereo models and Class-BD on mono models (R2 models are all Class-D). The MEHSA (MOSFET heat dissipation) technology is also more complex in the Punch line over the simpler MEHSA4 version in the R2. Overall, you can't go wrong with either the Punch or Prime R2 line of amplifiers as they offer much higher performance and features over competitive amplifiers in the same price point.

      @rockfordfosgate  4 роки тому +1

      All R2 models are Class-D, where only a few of the R1 were Class-A/B, but unless you are running a high-end set of components, you will likely not detect any sort of sound quality difference. If you are most interested in Sound Quality, I would suggest stepping up into the Punch Series amplifiers.

    I have the TM1000x5ad. What I don’t understand is that it is a Class-D amp, which is supposed to be a high-efficiency / cool running amp, but this thing runs RAGING HOT. How could it be claiming 85% efficiency while the amp is running 130°? Can someone please explain this? I have an M2 speaker system and plan on changing out this lava hot amp before it catches my boat on fire. Does the R2 amp series run just as hot?

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Brandon, The TM1000X5ad utilized Class-AD on channels 1-4 and Class-BD on the mono channel. These are not your typical Korean Class D circuits as they are engineered here in Tempe, AZ by Rockford Fosgate for much better Sound Quality. The Class-AD is an efficient circuit. The Class-BD circuit is slightly less efficient due to the configuration it's designed for high power output and does not mimic a typical Class-D design. The thermal limit on our amplifiers is 90˚C (194˚F) and safe on automobile carpets, marine applications on wood/fiberglass, and UTV installations on plastic. We're also the ONLY company to utilize a substrate called MEHSA which very efficiently removes heat away from the MOSFETS. This allows the inside components to run cooler, while the outside heatsink dissipates heat. The amplifier is operating perfectly normal and will not cause any issues in your boat.

    Hello. So, I ended up buying a P600X4. It is a terrific, well designed/engineered amplifier that really impresses me every time I use my system. The sound is very accurate.
    So, now I'm back searching for a good monoblock. I watched this video again, several times.
    --The new Prime amps ... do they compete with other models such as the Punch series? Because, the Prime series seems to be the better buy right now. They are fantastically engineered.
    --I'm looking at the R2-750X1. That amp can really pump out the power.
    --Does the R2 Prime amps function in a push-pull manner? --IDK the name of this circuit design, but does the amp read incoming power from the negative and compare it to the positive output in order to adjust the amp's output accordingly in order to push the sub as hard as it can but also give the amp more control over the sub's movement?

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  3 роки тому +1

      The Punch models offer sound quality topologies of Class-AB & Class-BD over the R2 circuit topology which is Class-D. Not 100% certain about what you're referring to in regards to push-pull. I highlighted all the major features of the R2 amplifiers above, but you can see all the technologies for the Prime amplifiers under the respective TECHNOLOGIES tab on each product details page: rockfordfosgate.com/products/selector/car-amplifiers/

    please increase the size of the voicecoils on the punch subs. would like to see 2.5" voice coils on the 10 and 12" rated at 750w.. with your amps getting more powerful we need subs that can handle the juice. I am forced to run an American bass subwoofer with my Rockford punch 1000x1 because your p3 10 cant handle it

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  3 роки тому +1

      Hi rmblwgn, the Punch P3 10" (P3D2-10/P3D4-10) and the P3 12" (P3D2-12/P3D4-12) already use 2.5" voice coils. The P3 10" is rated at 500W RMS and the 12" is rated at 600W RMS. Rockford Fosgate rates it's speakers according to CEA-2031 and IHF Dynamic specs. A lot of other manufacturers use the spec that gives them the biggest number, regardless of the real-world implications. So, you may see 500W+ subwoofers that really handle about 1/2 to 2/3 that power in the real world.
      A pair of P3 12" subwoofers will work just fine on a Punch P1000X1 amplifier. With the proper gain setup (we recommend +10dB Gain Overlap on subwoofers) this combination should have worked just fine as its suggested daily in our tech support center. We're assuming you had a pair of subwoofers that got blown. If the speaker surround/spider got torn, this is caused by excessive excursion (too much bass boost, incorrect enclosure). If the voice coils burned, it was likely driven extremely hard on that P1000X1 amplifier. Dynamic Power on the P1000X1bd is 1,430 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm, so you definitely have the potential to over-power the subwoofers.

    • @rmblwgn
      @rmblwgn 3 роки тому +2

      @@rockfordfosgate oh I agree I had the gain turned way down don't expect a single p3 10 to take 1400 Watts. I never clip or blow woofers so it was safe. I did upgrade to an American bass woofer for the same price for the increased mechanical compliance. It would be nice if your future generation punch 10 was rated at 750 RMS and could take bursts of a thousand Watts however. I think it is a good buy at $150 but 200 I think is a little too much

      There is a topology (sound quality) difference between the Punch model (Class-bd) and the Prime model (Class-D). Also, if you're simply looking at watts, you'll want to look at the Dynamic Power Output. The P1000X1bd is 1,430 Watts x 1 @ 1Ω. The R2-1200X1 is 1,389 Watts x 1 @ 1Ω.

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  4 роки тому +1

      R2-1200X1 >80%, max current at 1-ohm is 120A and the R1200-1D 80% at 1-ohm, max current is 107A. They are mostly the same Class-D design. They both generate 1,200W RMS and roughly 1,400W Dynamic Power. I wouldn't put that much into the differences on our 2 samples above because that can simply be due to parts tolerances. Also, the recommended fuse we sometimes upgrade recommendations based on continued feedback from the field. The fuse is simply there to protect the battery from a catastrophic short, not the limit the amplifier's current draw.

Like I say, our New Product Development likely increased the fuse size to be on the safe side for people who absolutely beat the hell out of the amplifier for long durations, causing the fuse to overheat and break. If this is a daily driver type of system, then 150 fuse should be fine.

    Great video! I have a question with matching this your R2-500x1 mono amp to my subwoofers. I have x2 8" subwoofers (single voice coils) that are 200 RMS @ 4ohm each. I will be wiring them in parallel so that they will be rated at 400watts RMS @ 2 ohms total. Will using this amp which is 100 watts more power be too much for the subs to handle? My plan was to not use Rockford's EQ punch or gain settings to hopefully level the power down enough

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  3 роки тому +1

      Great question, you will be overpowering those subwoofers since the R2-500X1 is rated to produce 500 Watts x 1 @ 2Ω, but Dynamic Power output is nearly 600 Watts! You may want to consider the R2-250X1 because Dynamic Power output is 328 Watts x 1 @ 2Ω which will not overdrive the subwoofers. The Gain + EQ controls don't regulate the Power Output of the amplifier, so it's gonna make that much power, the volume knob will just determine how quickly you'll get there.

      The P3D4-15 are rated to handle 600 Watts RMS each, so two subwoofers will provide 1,200 Watts of power handling capacity. The pair of subwoofers can be wired to create a 1Ω or 4Ω amplifier load.
      The Power P1000X2 is a full-range amplifier that can be bridged to produce 1000 Watts x 1 @ 4-Ohm Bridged. The P1000X1bd is a subwoofer amplifier that can produce 1000 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm mono. Although they offer the same power, the advantage is the P1000X1bd has a 28 Hz Infrasonic Filter, so if you plan on porting the enclosure, this is an absolute must have.

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Jose, I'm assuming you want to run the front channels to your midrange and tweeters and bridge the rear channels to your subwoofer, correct? The R2-500X4 is designed for impedances of 2Ω stereo and 4Ω bridged/mono.
      INPUTS
      How many RCA's do you have coming from the source unit?
      • If you have 2, move the switch to 2-CHANNEL INPUT and plug the RCAs into the FRONT LEFT/RIGHT. The front inputs feed all amplifier channels
      • If you have 4, move the switch to 4-CHANNEL INPUT and plug the FRONT RCAs into the FRONT LEFT/RIGHT. Do the same for the rear. The rear channels feed the subwoofer.
      • If you have 4 stereo RCAs + 1 or 2 SUB RCAs, move the switch to 5-CHANNEL INPUT. Plug the FRONT RCAs into the FRONT LEFT/RIGHT. Do the same for the rear. If your sub only has 1 RCA, use a Y-splitter and plug them into the SUB inputs. If you sub output has 2 RCA, then plug one into the SUB (top) and one into the SUB (bottom).
      OUTPUT
      Since you'll be bridging your rear channels, you'll want to make sure the subwoofer is a single 4Ω voice coil or a 2Ω DVC wired in series to create a 4Ω load connected to the REAR L+ and R- terminals. Click on WIRING WIZARD tab to see illustrations on how to wire the voice coil at: rockfordfosgate.com/products/details/R2-500X4/

    WRONG! Balanced and differential inputs are both different from each other, so there is no balanced-differential inputs. Second, the differential inputs require the source unit to also output the same differential out; otherwise, it doesn't do anything.

    • @rockfordfosgate
      @rockfordfosgate  3 роки тому +1

      Hi RobHTech, We wouldn't miss the opportunity to AGREE with you that Balanced and Differential are two different functions. You must come from the Home Audio and/or Pro Audio world, right?
      Rockford Fosgate's combination of the name is the proper way to describe our input circuitry. The inputs on the R2 amplifiers are truly balanced. Balanced differential allows us to accept both single ended and differential input signals. Without the balanced part we would have terrible performance with line-level in.
      Balanced refers to equal high input impedance on both + and - input (center pin and shield.). Differential refers to the capability of the amp to accept differential inputs (speaker level).
      You get better common mode noise rejection (alternator noise) whether your running speaker-level or single-ended line level in with the differential input. The balanced function prevents ground loops in the system due to the negative input being high impedance. This is a huge benefit when running line-level in.

My Pioneer HU pre-outs are rated to 4V, but on dyno testing, the pre-outs went up to 5V. Yes, Dean and Fernando did a great job on the R2 review. The low-level is spec'd at 150 mV - 4V and the high-level at 450 mV - 12 V. If you're not doing any Gain Overlap, then you should be fine with the low-level. However if you're going to run +5 dB Gain Overlap to get a reasonable amount of SPL from the system, you'll have plenty of range on the amplifier's gain control to do so. If you feel that's not giving you enough range, then you can use the high-level inputs... just be sure the Auto Remote Turn-On switch is OFF. -Eric R.
