RCP Hybrid Snare Drum / Practice Pad

- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- The RCP Hybrid Snare Practice Pad is a 12" combo of snare drum and practice pad. It is made of metal so it can handle high tension kevlar heads without fear of the drum or rim breaking. It also has a built in and removable neoprene practice pad.

We have to admit that when he makes a practice pad review, it's gonna be good.
Gotta try and cover all the details. 🙂
Practice pads have come a long way.....when I was playing snare, all we had was two pieces of wood put together to make a slanted head with rubber on it
That's the way old school pad. I took private lessons on one of those in 7th grade
I used to walk to school uphill both ways 😂
@@chrislugo5838 uphill both ways carrying my snare drum even
I had one of those things! It was terrible!
The Drum Practice Pads have come a long way since the wood and rubber ones of my childhood. 😉
Yup
Nothing beats the original RealFeel.

its a good day when snareman uploads a practice pad review video
Yes it is!!!
I was about to go to sleep right now and then I saw the words "Hybrid" snare drum from RCP. I already have an RCP drum pad and boy is that my favorite pad. I went ahead and clicked on this video right away. As soon ... as I heard the snare sound, I was blown away! I immediately purchased this thing. I guess this will be my birthday/christmas present this year. They are only giving away 100 of these bad boys. If I were you, I'd buy it before they sell out!
Man, these guys just keep getting better and better!!!🔥
Finally. I love this. I have been wanting a pad like this for years. Glad someone finally made it.
Another sincere and nice review from SnareMan! Thank You!
I had preordered a xymox either pre or post covid. It had been when they had first made new colors and been telling people to go ahead and start preordering. Never got it, kept getting told about a part shortage and that was the only explanation. Had to call my bank to mark it fraudulent since I was paying full price and didn’t want that hit on my funds. Major downer. Fingers crossed this company hit the market at a better angle.
Nice to see someone selling an alternative to Xymox. A very thorough review and one that
should answer some, if not all questions. At $229 that seems like a great deal. Personally,
I have become a fan of Drumslinger pads. I own the 13 inch corps pad with a kevlar head,
a 12 inch marcher pad and a 10 inch marcher pad. No snare sound, but these have great
response, a very realistic feel and are built like a tank with great customer service.
I wrote to them a few years ago trying to get a pad to review and even have a friend that knows him and couldn't even get an email response. I've heard they've had issues with customer service in the past but maybe they are finally better. I've heard they are good pads though.
Hi Dennis! Why am I not surprised to see you in a drum pad review?! :) Talk with you soon...
@@jgillott Hope you're doing well Joe. Let me know. Yep. Pad reviews is kind of
my passion or at least the pads. Drumslinger has captured my vote for now
until someone can top them and I don't see that happening any time soon.
I orded a drumlinger pag back in june 2019, still have not gotten it and never got a reply to any of my emails.
@@joeysmith04622 this is more the kind of experience I have heard from him. But I've heard a few people recently like Dennis said it was better so who knows
Snare sounds so good!
This seems pretty perfect for drum and bass too
This is a game changer right here!
Very informative video.
Thank you for sharing.
Happy Drumming!
Thanks!
@@SnareMan My pleasure. Thank you 😃
I have never seen a snare drum pad. This is soooo dope

I just got the email that mine is on the way!! So excited to have it.

Got it yesterday and I really like it! But as you said you definitely need hearing protection if you’re going to play the drum side.
@@NLind Glad you like it!
👏👏👏👏👏 Fantastic Review man 😎👍
RCP seems to be the real deal (real Company). I would really like to have that Snare/Pad Combo, but, it is expensive. I feel they should have just made it a 14'' unit. If they ever do make it in 14'' I will most definitely have to put money aside for one.
Thank You again Snare Man. I appreciate all that you do and have done. You are a Living Legend and a true inspiration.

Living legend. Not so sure about that, but I'll take it. Lol. 🙂
@@SnareMan ...no one puts in the time to reply to their fans as much, and as consistently as you do. At least not that I have seen. Thanks again man (very cool) 🤝
@@ar_badical I try and give 'good customer service' on my videos. 😉😉
Just ordered a 13 inch, hopefully it feels close to the real deal. Pretty cool to be able to try different heads too that I never have. Trying to get back into playing

Havnt finished the full video but read the description and this thing looks amazing
Definitely gonna buy this some day
Oh wow that’s a cool design
You can separate the pad part and still use it as a separate pad and have the mini drum to use on its own
Yup. Its a neat design. Get your order in early as they only have 100 of them initially.
@@SnareMan yeah I’m good right now
Hope they’ll still have this product in the far future
There are so many instruments I want but those have to wait until I move out

FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting for another practice pad review from you for AGES.
I know. Sorry. More to come.

Great review Bro!! Are you also a full drum set drummer? If so, what brand do you play on? Thanks again: your Brother PA and drummer in Montana, RnMT
Great review...love this idea but will wait for a 14" version
I don't think they are planning on coming out with a 14" version
@@SnareMan Thanks for the info. I feel better about getting a new SFZ then. Love your videos!
@@russhicksart Thanks! We used the new Yamaha's last summer and they are pretty nice. Lighter than the previous generation.
I’ve had it a few months now and use it when I’m instructing a local high school’s drumline. It’s significantly lighter than previous versions. What heads did the BC Alum use?
@@russhicksart We used Evans Hybrid marching snare heads in grey.
Need this one
Use to take tall traffic cones off the road for a big group practice pad. Such a bad feel too
Huh?
First, I knew you would get your hands on one
I was fortunate to get a sneak peek.
Looks like they have another batch coming in, and now also available in Blue. Available for shipping late January ’24 according to the website.
I saw that. I guess they are selling well.
I like how it actually sounds more like a pipeband snare, fitting since they use coiled wires below the top head as well as on the bottom. And the lugs on the sides, I wonder if you could use them to change the snare response since from what I’ve seen on pipeband snares that’s how you adjust the top snare mechanism. Furthermore I wonder if it would work for a pipeband drummer to practice on since, again from what I’ve seen they don’t seem to play to the edge of the head.
I didn't mention it in the video but you can turn the lugs on the side to raise the snares up and down
@@markponekovic3415 I can't. Had to send it back to RCP.
No lie, as soon as you said that you’re a Bluecoats alumni, I almost immediately subscribed. 😂
Thanks!!
nice review, been watching for a while. but can you review the xymox reserve max? theres not that much videos on it
Thanks. I refuse to give xymox any money though. Maybe if they apologized to the world, to me and sent me a free one maybe
I was wondering if you had known about this. When this appeared in a Facebook group (IIRC Drum Practice Pad History) I thought about you and your ordeal with “that other company “. Just preordered one.
Interesting. Didn't know about that group.
I hope this will better than the Xymox hybrid before.🎉
It should certainly be that.
Cool
it surprised me when you commented that $229 is expensive. looks like a inventive product. very nice find. I don't see any way to make something that can handle the high-tension for marching snare at a lower cost that will in fact last over time.
I'm not saying it's not a reasonable price for what it is just that it might be expensive for some people's wallets
@@SnareMan sorry, you did clearly elaborate in the video there is a value offered for the price weighted against what is provided. Again; sorry, my comment came across compleatly incorrectly. I totally got your point as you broke it down after the price comment rather well, and you did a excellent objective analysis. It was just 'at that point' when you revealed this price-point would be interpreted as high to some consumers; thus, it acutely surprised me that this could be considered pricey for someone in a drum-line type of activity. thus, not your comment; rather, the consumers view of the value worthiness is what surprised me. By the way, first time watching one of your videos and it is an excellent objective analysis, very well done. & I appreciate that you made a comment to my post. Me and my daughter are working at releasing a dual volume acoustic drum-set; thus, I am always digging into what the practice-pad side of the industry is percolating regarding innovation and how the consumers perceive that value of the innovation against that of the common consumer needs.
@@LowVolume no problem. Sometimes it's hard to catch the entire video when making a comment. I've done it plenty of times. And, I try to provide good customer service on my videos with comments. 🙂 Good luck with the project you're working on with your daughter
Hey how do you tune your marching snare? That one small clip of you playing it sounded so good and I want my snare to sound just like that
I actually thought the tune sounded horrible there. I thought it sounded better here... ua-cam.com/video/3zt8S070ODk/v-deo.htmlsi=M3qZEBn8z59C3MSL&t=743
Excellent review
By any chance do you have info if this can be attached to a carrier?
Thanks. I don't think I've seen any carrier attachments yet.
The no pad insert and the pad no insert are my favorites what sound do you prefer
You can't really hear it in the video but without the pad it sounds a lot more wet with the snares. It sounded closer to the same with both the pattern insert gone and on the drum
@SnareMan does a falams head feel similar to a white max and black max because I noticed that when you play on the falams head it's not that bouncy than a white max or black max
@SnareMan I know I must have asked you this before how tight can the rcp hybrid go because i still might get it and I just wanted to know how tight it can go because I want to be careful about not breaking anything because I want it tuned low for a while and then maybe having thoughts about bringing it up more
Great review! Could you put a bottom resonant head in place of the pad ?
Thanks! No, head wouldn't work on the bottom because there's not a rim like that there
Can you do Evans realfeel 12" practice pad?
Is there a way to mount to a standard pipe band snare drum carrier? Without the foam insert in it, this seems like an alternative to a regular drum in low volume/small venue applications.
Not sure. You'd have to make some kind of mount for the carrier.
I wish I could drum like this. I suppose you don’t happen to teach online or maybe recommend someone?
I wish I could drum better. There are likely far better teachers than me. I'm just a dabbler these days, especially post alumni Corps. My chops were better a year ago when I was practicing a bunch for that but still definitely not what they were back when I was marching
8:44 Killin that snare while you stare deep into my soul
Awesome video. Its a little bit of a bummer that the drum is still full volume even with the insert. That said I have had this on preorder since the day it launched and I have my own qualms that I will be venting in a video on my other channel when I receive mine later. I also STILL have the xymox pad including the insert. I'll probably test it to see how it sounds with the head at a full tightening, because truth be told the only good thing about the xymox variant was the insert. But again because that rim breaks you cant really tighten the head down very much so it ends up feeling more like a practice pad anyways.
We have added a foam insert that is a little thicker then the prototype that we sent the Snareman. This should help to dampen the pad a bit more. Unlike the xymox pad it also has a practice pad on the bottom for when you want to be extra quiet.
@@rcpdrumcompany1545 gotcha, I can't wait to test this in hopefully December when it arrives.
I think the idea is that you just keep the insert inside to deaden the snare a little bit, and then the hybrid part is just the fact that it has a practice pad on the other side
@@nedmac4451 no I've chatted with these guys. The niche in the market they are trying to fill is having a marching snare like practice pad that sounds and feels like one but at significantly less volume. Otherwise just buy a used marching snare for the same price and use any old pad most of us already have lying around, unless for some reason the pad that comes with this is incredible, which it isn't marketed as such.
And truthfully I've priced it out, before I saw this I was going to make my own snare pad (still possibly might) where you take one of the tama star marching snare head brackets and you can combine it with the lower rim bracket and you can tighten the mylar head down to full tension. Now those heads are still kinda loud so there is no dampening, but I think you can do it for like $150-175 or so.
Would it be possible to rig a harness attachment on that thing?
I'm not sure. You would probably have to drill into the shell I would think or somehow make up some way to hold the thing
We need your review on Mad Practice Pads. Skinny George swears by those 🙃
Looks like nice pads. I'll look into them. I have two more pad videos coming, one of them up today
Great review! Question though, how comparable is the head on this thing to an Evans hybrid head? since this thing is 12" that means no Evans head :( And are there any heads that I could put on the hybrid pad that would be comparable to the Evans hybrid head?
Thanks. I know RCP is working with some of the drum head manufacturers to get some additional compatible heads
I see, so I suppose I can hope for a 12" Evans hybrid head some time in the future then. Thanks!@@SnareMan
@@Enderpawn you can double check with RCP. They're pretty responsive
I called the number, and they said they were attempting to work with the head companies. That's good enough for me, so I've already purchased a drum. Wouldn't be here without the in depth review! @@SnareMan
Rcp just released a 13 inch version of their hybrid snare
So Xymox is mad I charged back a pad I bought almost 3 months ago, they sent the hybrid after I charged them back and now they want to charge me for the product. Should I just send this shit back since there’s cracks in the plastic and I haven’t even played it?
So it was broken when it got to you?
If I was able to upload pictures here you could see the hairline cracks under the lugs and the rim isn't sitting even all the way around. I'm scared to attempt to tune it cause the hairline crack will break.@@SnareMan
@@atAlyssabeth That sounds like about what happened with mine. I guess they haven't fixed their quality issues. Did you try and email them about it? Did they respond?
@@SnareMan note that the charge back was placed before the drum shipped because I thought I’d been scammed. This is the email they sent after the pad was delivered a few weeks after the charge back.
“Xymox Drum Co.

This was my response upon finding the cracks in the rim and them offering to refund the drum and email a shipping label. “ I would prefer to keep the refund and your welcome to send a prepaid shipping label as there are actually cracks in the rim and the pad was never played. I did issue the charge back a week before the pad shipped and it was almost a 3 month wait after a promised 10-15day lead ship time. Thank you for your business, and everything will be shipped the same day the label is sent. “
Mannnn this pad sounds good 😂😂
I love what you guys do down there in Atlanta!
The pad sounds exactly like the field drum
This is a good product but I think the main flaw here is the head because of the 12 inch size it’s really hard to find a falams head in 12 inches in all the main sites I use like Steve Weiss or sweetwater I don’t think there’s any big retailers that carry it which is what’s steering me away from this
That's a reasonable concern. My very casual search on my phone while at work didn't turn up much. I see you asked RCP on IG. We'll see what they say. Did you look up any of the other Kevlar type heads?
@@SnareMan I looked evans and remo have pretty much nothing looking at the 12 inch Kevlar side of things since the head is for pipe band and they pretty much don’t do anything in that area and only 13/14 inch stuff for corp style stuff nothing shows up it’s just Mylar stuff available
@@SnareMan rcp has responded they are actively working with remo currently and are planning on putting them on the website bc the 12 inch heads are not publically available but they are planning on as well putting black max heads on 12 inch as well
@@Pourusdeerperc sounds like maybe RCP is getting at worked out.

Where can I get that awesome shirt?
It's not actually for sale anywhere. It was an alumni corps original, only sold within the corps. Not sure where the drum majors who originated it came up with it.
Thanks for sharing this video. I don’t know if anyone already commented on this but the ringing snare wire is easily fixed by adjusting the snare wire on the drum key tension rods on either side of the drum. Try lowering the tension. Note the snare adjust mechanism is a little sticky so you might have to nudge it (this was the case on my drum but I am assuming it’s because it was fresh from the company and needed to be broken in a little.) Check out this video for a detailed explanation. Thanks again for the review. www.youtube.com/@rcpdrumcompany1545

Why at 8:20?
I'm typicaly not a negative bro so please excuse me if it sounds like I am but as nice as this seems I don't see a point in making a practice pad thats as loud as a real drum, I would just play a real drum. secondly for $229 I'd just stick to playing on the bottom of an old shoe. again not complaining just sayin. I guess this could be good for certain situations ...so be it
I don't disagree. That's why I wish it had something to make it more dampened/ muted like the xymox one does
They definitely aren’t for everyone. The point of the product is to give the sound and feel of a real drum with out the over $800 price tag of a real drum. It is also a more compact option then lugging around a full size drum. We have added a foam insert that is a little thicker then the prototype that we sent the Snareman. This should help to dampen the pad a bit more. Unlike the xymox pad it also has a practice pad on the bottom for when you want to be extra quiet.
I think that a really good application for this pad would be things like content creators, people like atomous, sdj, and any BYOS vids, even used full size marching snares are upwards of $600 and this, you would get the same kind of sound for vids, but for a fraction of the cost :/
@@nedmac4451 although if you're those guys they deserve to have a full sized drum. If your channel is based on snare drumming have a real snare drum. 🙂🥁 Could be useful for some instances though

Pros: Good comprehensive review. Excellent presentation and the reviewer's talent and technique are great to watch. Cons: Even with all it's features, this piece of junk is expensive and actually does produce that phony drumline noise that passes for drum sound nowadays. There's nothing more annoying than watching a line of talented percussionists clickety-clacking away on high dollar, low rent sheets of plexiglass that are passed off as "drums". Speaking of plexiglass, for just over half the cost of this thing, you can get a half-inch sheet of plastic at any big hardware store, and make yourself four of these.
Maybe you are thinking of another company but these ones actually have an all steal construction, Silicon Practice Pad Base and use a Remo Kevlar head. The head alone cost $50 👍
I'm guessing you aren't a fan of kevlar heads?
Why? Can't you marching drummers just practice on a table you have the skins that tight.
can we come over and play on your table?
Xymox tries to tighten a kevlar head with a plastic rim? 😆 I swear the only thing they know how to do right is drugs.
Yup. Check out my videos on it
I mean, that *is* the important thing.
$350?? Umm no!
$229 👍
For that price you can buy a REAL snare drum that you can use as a practice pad.
But not one you can put a kevlar head on and tighten it to marching snare tension. You could get a concert snare though probably.
Yeah,,,, I’m not a fan of pads with regular heads….. Too Loud,,, drums are frickin Loud enough -- MUCH prefer RubbeR- very Nice.
