Do you have any fond memories of the beginning of the summer? The anticipation? That last meaningless week of school? School or county fair?

For high school we got out around the middle of June for exams. For elementary school we'd get out around the middle of June too, then come back about 7 to 14 days later to get our report cards and have a field day at a big track up behind the school. We'd have relay races, tug-of-wars, food & drinks, etc....
I would get so excited to be finished school, but always HATED seeing those back to school commercials which would usually begin airing around the beginning of August. Even now in my 30's, seeing those commercials still send a shiver down my spine lol

I had a good one, during high school since I was the one of the students that collected video games. Onetime at the end we were giving a choice to leave early or stay longer and we would find a teacher who would let us borrow tv and I was the one supplying the PS2 for DDR or N64 and Super Nintendo for some Multiplayer fun. Funny to see the students get nostalgia over retro stuff. Best part was a teacher took me on at Mario Kart and I beat them.

@@ducknut300 they're doing a Certain N-64 Guide Book right now. I don't remember them officially announcing it, but they've mentioned it a few times lately. I don't love the N-64, but I love these Certain Guidebooks, so I'm stoked. I'd love a GameBoy book though.

Yea I went to a Christian school and we'd get out the last week of May or first week of June and go back the last week of August. College was the best though, we got out the beginning of May, and go back after Labor Day, and we got like 3--4 weeks off for Christmas and then a week for Spring break. My favorite memories were usually around going to a friend's house because both my parents worked. We'd spend the day playing video games because I didn't have a console, riding bikes, trampolines and exploring the woods near the house.

Early summer memories are a blend of exploring in the woods, riding my BMX bike, the arcade at the mall, blockbuster movies, going to Myrtle Beach, SC or sitting in my room playing Nintendo. At home I was most fond of renting several NES games and diving into them. Staying up all night (because yay, no school) and beating Mega Man 2 for the first time was a highlight for me.

There was a year in the 80's that we had no . Just a severe drought in Western Pennsylvania . We were usually outside playing all day and night during summer vacation . I think that it was 1989 , because I seem to remember that my older sister and my oldest brother were already moved away out of the house . My other older brother graduated in 1989 . But I remember that we did whatever chores our parents would make us do and we had a badminton/volleyball net that we kept up all summer long . My older brother and I would go out an play badminton with our friends , come back inside and play Contra on the NES , go back out and play badminton , go in and play Contra , rinse and repeat . We were also watching a lot of It's Garry Shandling Show and the Tracey Ullman Show on Fox . Pretty sure that Fox was pretty much a new channel at the time . The drought lasted through most of the summer and our badminton court was nothing but a dust pit because all of the grass had died . My brother left for the U.S. Army at the end of that summer vacation leaving me the only kid left at home with my parents until I graduated in 1992 . Probably the best summer of my life .

I remember in grade school... like running out of that building on the last day like my head was on fire. The anticipation of summer break is pretty much what carried my spirit onwards after the end of christmas break. We got VERY, VERY few snow days... but we were always done in early June as well. Maybe even late, late May? Those 13 or 14 weeks... how glorious. My brother and I spent long periods of time with my grandparents who lived in Pittsburgh. We'd go out for two weeks each, sometimes together, sometimes each by ourselves.... the fun! Lots of playing outside, tons and tons of video games. We would go to the drive in 3 or 4 times a summer. Go down to the various parks swimming. We had a few within like 20-30 min drive. Cookouts, staying up later... just the simple lazy days of summer. What fun!

@@stoves5877 Well, other than it possibly hitting parts of a person's head, or I guess hitting a finger wrong and breaking it... Of course, we weren't supposed to aim at the head. However, it still was probably safer than some of the game we'd be playing on the play ground during recess. Like wall burner (may be other names for it) where we threw a tennis ball or something similar against the wall and the goal was to hit the wall before it hit the ground. If you miss, had to run and touch the wall before another kid grabbed the ball and hit the wall with it before you did touch it. If that happens I think 3 times, you have to stand against the wall while a kid whips said ball at you.

Summers in the 80s and 90s were awesome. Our last day of school was field day and it was a free for all and not much supervision so; in the 5th grade we left like at 10a and went to my friends house to play nes.
A 3 full months of break,Nickelodeon had variety such as double dare, nick arcade, and cartoons instead of constant re runs. We would stay up all night conquering nes games. Our fast food was better. Also building play forts in the woods all day and sneaking out at night.

I grew up in point pleasant and my mom and mom mom would park themselves at the jenkinsons big wheel. It had appliances, video games electronics...they had random play specials where you could bet like 5 numbers for a buck. one weekend in July 90, my mom and mom mom spent a few hours there and surprised me and my brother with Mario 3. This is when you'd get games at Christmas or birthdays only or if God forbid, broke your leg or whatever. We(brother Geoff who is also 40 Pat.) were just so ready to pass out for excitement. Also at dads we'd have friends over to watch movies and hang out in their pool. At mom mom's where we lived primarily with mom we had a pool too. The above ground ones that go up to your chest. So much fun. Also I'm a nerd, so bike riding to the library was my jam too.

When I was a kid, my 2nd favorite time of year was the end of May to the end of June, my favorite being November and December. At the end of the school year we mostly did fun activities including watching movies. The summer was the time of year I went to the beach the least, but when we did go to the beach in the summer it was usually Rehoboth Beach and Assateague Island and would spend the day there. I loved playing games on the boardwalk. I would go on vacation for a week somewhere. There were days I would play video games nonstop for sometimes over 24 hours.

My birthday was always the second to last, last, or final day of school and finishing up for the summer meant so much more because of that. Then we'd blast out of school like tiny bullets, running home to grab our bikes and ride like maniacs the next few months. I can literally still smell the cut grass, the dirt from the baseball diamond, and the lake near my house.

0:35 school-mandated reading assignments from middle school on ruined any joy I may have had for enjoying books in particular
I had to write a 3-4 sentence summary after every chapter or reading session to “improve reading comprehension”, then a book report for every book - and we were expected to read at least one 300+ page book per month or two. Now imagine doing that for Stephen King novels - which I developed a phase for at or around that time.

I had the same experience as Ian. Came down from here in Canada in 1993 to Wildwood NJ. Bought a bodyboard and fell in love with that sport. I was 17 and said "fuck you" to sunscreen. Was out all day, and woke up in the middle of the night with my face leaking because of the blisters that had formed. I had to walk around for the rest of the trip caked in this crazy waterproof sunscreen with locals saying "BRO, you got buuhned" in their NJ accents. Bodyboarding became a mainstay of my youth, and despite the fucking blisters, that was a great trip (first viewing of Beavis and Butthead - we weren't getting it in Canada at that point yet)...

@@mkbcnb a bunch of depressed kids who didn't do their work or tended to act out in class being even more depressed that they couldn't enjoy their time with their friends.

I'm around the Va. Beach area. When I was a kid I loved it. Now that I'm an adult I never go during the summer because the tourists are nauseating. Boogie boarding was the shit though! Not a beach fan anymore at all.

I'm not a fan of the beach, depending on when Ian was at Virginia beach I might have been there at the same time on Boogie Boards and we had dolphins come up by our boards it was nuts. That was the most fun I had ever had at the beach.

Lol I live about 150 feet from Lake Erie in Ohio. Cold in the winter is an understatement, and trust me, you do NOT want to buy a house here unless you want all of your neighbors to be meth heads and heroin addicts

Ocean City, MD getting a shoutout for all the right reasons! Pretty bad place to be during these days with COVID. Lots of stupid people being irresponsible, unfortunately. The beach is trash most of the time (literally - trash in the sand, especially in the more popular spots), but the boardwalk is fantastic. Definitely recommend for their arcades!
