Keep in mind the edge is meant to work in concert with the crave. The crave will do midi to pitch cv. I use it to pitch my dfam sometimes. Usualy i use the Beatstep pro in that role. but the crave will do midi to pitch.
Bloody brilliant video. I'm so keen to get an Edge or three and see what my Keystep can do with it. Really makes me wish the DFAM had midi. I have to use so much CV trickery to get it to do what I want when MIDI could just circumvent most of it. I'm most excited about that velocity sensitive expression!
I agree! I was thinking about how I might use the Edge with my Beatstep Pro. Behringer did do a video with some very rough MIDI info but I think it was from a year ago. This video here is an honest demo of a fair bit of the MIDI functionality. I can't wait for my Edge to arrive now... Just got a Yamaha VSS200 that arrived today to play with until then.

Thanks, I was wondering about this. It's actually more than I hoped for, I was afraid MIDI was just for sync. Anyway, does the MIDI pitch add to the sequencer pitch, or does it replace it?
midi pitch hits the active trigger only - if you send it midi notes while the seq: is running nothing will happen, stop the engine, hit a key and the pattern transposes and you hear this after play is pushed again
@@ogasi1798 Not sure I understand this, but thank you for your kind answer. I mean, you're telling me that I hit a key and, after I press play, the Edge remembers the pitch and transpose the sequence? I'm pretty sure there's no such capability in it, no memory.
@@wonderwheel80s i have two proto of them, trust me i know what i am talking about it still has mcu etc, midi is just a signal hitting the cv of the seq: - if midi is connected and a seq: is playing - if you stop and hit a key, the sequence is transposed yes 🙂 basically when pitch of the step is centred, that particular step is the pitch you are transposing and his can be heard by hitting the trigger button and then replicating on midi kbd - you then play the new note and all others follow simply suit
An oddity I noticed is, if you have the "Seq Pitch Mod" selected to anything other than "off", when you play a note via midi input, the Edge triggers another note (whatever is on the current sequencer step) on key release / midi note off. If you are playing the Edge with a keyboard, make sure you have "Seq Pith Mod" selected to off.
Yeah that’s a good point. I mention it in either this or my other videos, it can be a real head scratcher when you realise it’s playing different notes than you’re hitting on the keyboard!

Is there any possible chance you could do a short tutorial on the simplest possible way to have a DAW run the Edges clock? Thanks mate!
It depends on the DAW tbh. I’m Logic you have to set the individual MiDI outputs to send clock for example. I think it’s sent by default on Ableton, but can’t remember how it works on Cubase, I’ve not touched it for about 10 years now. You need to press play on the Edge - which is a big one!
Hey man, wondering if you could help, I've just got the edge and I'm getting volume issues whenever I try and link it up with anything. I tried my volca drum through a headphone splitter and the edge become barely audible, the same trough a mixer. Did you have any of these issues?
My biggest want from this is something like the Sonoclast MAFD to trigger the different 8 steps in whatever order I want. Really bummed that isn't a feature with this :(
I don't have any recommendations for any in particular sorry. There's lots of workarounds with different modules, but anything with an amp should do it. The Voltage Lab2 has one for example, as does the Taiga, but I don't have a specific module. If you've any eurorack, maybe you have a VCA that would do the trick.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by "no MIDI reset", but I find that my edge (stock firmware) always reverts to step 1 when I hit play in Reaper. I'm only outputting the clock pulse over USB but even if I select "do not send reset message" in the MIDI menu it will not begin from any step other than 1. Maybe you're referring to resetting on the fly? IDK just my 2 cents.
No idea tbh. Maybe there’s been a firmware update or maybe I was talking about resetting at any point ie resetting ad hoc at any point eg after 5 steps to create a 5 step loop then after 7 steps then after 3 for either semi random or polymetric stuff. Probably the latter.
Transmitting MIDI clock which has swing built into the data stream is a pretty rare and actually unreliable way of doing things...because different manufacturers interpret that fluctuating clock data differently. I'm surprised the Cobalt actually transmits MIDI clock with swing built in. Generally it's best to adjust swing value on the sequencer itself if the device's internal sequencer has swing adjustment. I'm not sure if Edge's internal sequencer has swing, but if you have an external sequencer with swing that generates analog clock pulses (e.g. Pioneer DJ Toraiz Squid), you can drive the Edge with that and swing all you want.
The way the Edge responds to MIDI notes is VERY strange. If SEQ PITCH MOD is off, it just plays the MIDI notes. It triggers the envelope, then when you release the key it stops. If you press TRIGGER on the Edge it will replay the last MIDI note it got. But if SEQ PITCH MOD is on, when you release the note, instead of stopping, the oscillator pitch changes to the pitch of the active step and it keeps playing for the normal decay time. Many Moog synths treat the last MIDI note received as a base note and then CV gets added to (or transposes) that note. That's what my Minitaur does, so I can turn it into a DFAM with a Korg SQ-1, and then I can send MIDI notes which transpose the pattern from the SQ-1 using CV. But what the Edge does seems more like a bug.
I think I know the answer to this... but if the seq pitch mod is off and the sequencer is running... can you play midi notes to define the pitch while everthing else comes from the Edge sequencer? I think not, but what a shame!
