That's really cool. For the first part of the video you're essentially using Crave as a MIDI-CV box, so everything would work the same way with M32 and DFAM. I had never thought about doing something like that. That bit with Dylan Thomas was kind of like a techno version of the outro of Knights in White Satin. Really fun.
Oh yeah… just changed the title to reflect that. I never thought of it either! I think with the Moogs being eurorack format I’d gravitated toward using it with that rather than MIDI. Nice idea. Thanks
In the DFAM episode of Bad gear (audiopilz), he does something similar with an Arturia Keylab (which have MIDI/CV capability, I guess), he also uses it to transpose the sequence. It's Jam 1 in the episode.
Honestly Starsky, I've had that 'Tropical' tune in my head for absolutely ages, since you made this video. It's A CRACKER!!! You have to release this. Or at least, just do a quick video of the 'Tropical' tune, 4 mins long. It's a TOTAL BANGER!!! Cheers man.
I have a Polyend SEQ, it's 32 grid by 8 rows. This is perfect for something like the EDGE, you can add, remove steps in real time and see it beautifully. Expensive sequencer but I think I may look into getting a couple of EDGEs for some experimentation. That a Crave and a Spice when they come out.
Would i able to use the cv out on my midi controller in the same way? Im wondering how i might utilize the cv, gate, and mod outs on my midi controller with the edge.
Hello, I’ve be watching your videos and they’re really helpful, thank you. I have one question I just can’t seem to find an answer Can you play individual steps through the USB or midi to computer? Like the dfam with mafd does. If so how? if not do you think they will add it eventually? Thank you for any information 🙂
I'm having a hard time figuring out the MIDI pitch tracking. I've tried to see if the pitch matches the keys pressed on the keyboard on your videos, but I feel like the pitch is not correct. Could you confirm that the tracking is correct, i.e. a C4 results in a C4 rather than a B flat. I'd love to use this as a bass synth but I've yet to find convincing examples of the edge being in tune with other instruments.
The tuning depends on the oscillator tune knob position so won’t be exactly in tune unless I’ve done that- which I doubt I did. Playing the keyboard with the seq pitch knobs at zero tracks the pitch. If the seq knob is detuned the oscillator will add that value to the midi pitch.
Awesome! Question: How would you sync the midi clock of the Edge with Logic Pro? I want to sequence with the Edge and match a drum machine in logic. Is it possible?
Yes - you need to go into the synchronisation settings in Logic and check the MIDI output the edge is connected to. Set the edge to listen to external MIDI.
hi, friend. First of all, congratulations on the videos, they are all very good, I would like to know how to do so that connected with ableton live, or with any other teacher, so that the edge jumps with the triguer from the first hit of the sequencer every time, I just figured it out buy and I'm already making very complex techno sounds, with the edge this seems like an easy task for me, fun and very addictive, but I can't press play and have it start from the beginning of the sequencer, I imagine in a live show, pressing play and Let the sequencers start each on their own wherever they want without going at the same time, measure or rhythm, I think it should be possible to do it, the idea is to add crave and neutron this week, in order to end up demolishing the apartment block where I live, I might end up behind bars one of these days but first I would like to be able to synchronize with live and with the others, thank you and greetings ;)
You have to manually move the edge to the final step by cycling to the end with the next step button. If it’s in the final step and you press play it starts in the first. There’s no automatic way of resetting as far as I know.
appreciate this video, seeing further patching potential, and how to integrate with daw (recording modulation lanes in the daw of the dfam?). sorry, I'm confused why the pitch-cv-from-MIDI works on the crave but not the edge. I'm prob misunderstanding what you're explaining at 2:00. MIDI pich info isn't converted to CV v/oct? Only not on the crave, whereas the edge has this capability? Can you please offer a bit more explaination? thanks!
Cool sounds! Oh man the Edge is such a massive «if only...». I’d very gladly pay more for a nice sequencer with polyrhythms, swing and song mode. Maybe their elusive BCR32 or Groove key will perform these duties. Standalone units without memory have a tendency to collect dust.
It is possible with Crave. Route an external signal to ext.aud. input, turn mix cv knob all the way to the right and there you go. Can't use ADSR because Crave just have attack, decay and sustain, but not release You may need a preamp though
12:22 thanks for the answer ; ) Too bad midi can't offer this, as I have the DFAM I might buy this Sonoclast module. Then I can control the DFAM pretty well with the Keystep CVs, with touch velocity and all that...
No, the drum pad section is where I touch in that. The MAFD can do it for the DFAM, so maybe this as well - but your probably best just to use a keyboard or drum pad and set each pad to send the pitch you’re after.
Starsky Bro, you unsubscribe me? I've been subscribed since you were doing these videos out of an old vw camper. i just want to sync it with my daw (ableton) so I can use time based effects like delays when i perform it. that should be easy no? guess I connect it over USB and then go to ableton midi settings and hope it shows . does it come with a driver?
It doesn’t need a driver - at least not for Logic on a Mac. I don’t see why it would need one for anything else. But yeah. Via usb it shows up as the Edge
Me too. It's one of the rare things I can't emulate on software, and it's so fun to play with... Bad side, it doesn't have any use on my music genre. Apart from its pink colour.
@@dankeplace you got it wrong. you still need a kinda 808/909. this dfam making that crazy techno lines where you build a beat with a conventional drum mashine over it ; )
Funny coincidence. I was talking to a guy that works for me about our fathers and their disciplinary tactics and brought up Dylan Thomas's points "Rage."
And it doesn't output the pitch value on the patchbay, also. It seems to me that MIDI pitch is not related at all to the "Pitch" parameter of the edge, it simply transposes both oscillators. And when the sequencer is running, the "Pitch" parameter of the synth takes over, transposing oscillators according to the setting you selected and outputting the value on the patchbay. Anyway it's still much more than I hoped, personally I was content enough with MIDI sync.
I show the relationship between the MIDI pitch and the sequencer in the tuning section. Midi pitch takes precedence if the sequencer is not playing, but reverts to the current step’s setting on release. 12 o’clock is same as MiDI
Just wondering if i can make the arpeggiator outout from my nord stage 3 via midi trigger the midi input to a moog mother 32? anyone ever tried this or knows how to make this method work. T.I.A. : )
Thank you. I have another question, which can seem trivial but actually is not: if you put Velociy at 0 on a DFAM step, it will not trigger the envelopes. This is not the same of a 0 volume trigger, because if you have a tight sequence and a long decay, if you put velocity at 0 it won't cut the previous step, allowing it to fully decay. This is exploited in the "electro-thump" factory patch of the DFAM. Is the Edge doing the same, or will it trigger the envelope anyway, cutting the previous step? Thanks to anyone who can answer this! EDIT: The answer to this was already given by Starsky here: ua-cam.com/video/rc4wlomawNs/v-deo.html So it works as the DFAM.
You can elongate the note in the daw - and, if you want to change pitch on the next step, pitch bend the note - a workaround if you’re relying on pitch changes in elongated notes.. not ideal but do-able perhaps.
@@StarskyCarr Thanks, but I was talking about the sequencer, no MIDI involved, I'd like to know if the sequencer triggers the envelopes or not when the step velocity is zero. DFAM doesn't, I'm quite sure.
