I'm new to this series. I live in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa, and there is much great television which didn't get here, for various reasons! I'm 70. I did my South African National Service in the army in 1967. In those days we only served 9 months, but things changed in the 90s, by which time I was well out of it. The sservices are basically the same for rookies. This took me back. The kit issue scene was outstanding - BLOODY BRILLIANT!
My dad shaved with an open razor and had to demonstrate that he actually used it to shave, and not as a weapon when he first arrived for National Service...
Much like the lads in this, I didn't need to and so had never shaved until 'basic'. Then I went through the motions every morning. :-) Better than getting 'charged'.
This is brill as I can remember the corporals face from when I was a kid and nothing else. And being ex 3 times RAF enlisted myself as well as a father who went to the Malayan campaign with national service this is a must for me. Soo funny. And relevant for any ex recruit!
aahh yes, we had it easier when i went through basic..but still i remember those barracks left over from WWII, no hot water..cold metal bed, wooden wardrobe, cold lino concrete or wooden floors (depending on what building you were in). haha, once you got used to the situation and accepted it wasn't forever..it was fun
Ahh, the late Clive Hornby as the stores man, at the same time he had an even bigger roll as Jack Sugden on Emmerdale Farm. I loved this series as a teenager, I was in the ATC and wanted to join the RAF but failed the medical due to a dodgey kidney!
THANKS MAN. I DID 3 MONTHS D.C. (HARSHER THAN BORSTAL) IN 1981 FOR REFUSING TO PAY FINE FOR £5 DEAL OF POSSESSION OF CANNABIS. I STUPIDLY TOLD MAGISTRATES "MY BODY,MY LIFE,MY CHOICE!" IT WAS JUST LIKE THIS! (EXCEPT SCREWS PUNCHED US ANY TIME THEY WANTED-HARD.) FROM A LONG HAIRED HIPPY, TO A SHAVED HEAD ROBOT IN 2 DAYS! THEY JUST GAVE ME MORE REASONS TO QUESTION SOCIETY. THE FILM SCUM IS VERY ACCURATE. WE HAD KIDS SO TERRIFIED OF OTHER KIDS THEY WOULD BECOME "BUTLERS" INC "BLINDFOLDED BLOW JOBS" (a B.B.J.) FOR A MARS BAR AS THEY WERE "PIMPED OUT" SAD SITUATION" I AM 6FT 5IN & DID 3 YEARS BOXING,SO FOUGHT BACK, BUT STILL GOT BATTERED IN THE DORM WHILE SLEEPING & SHEET OVER MY HEAD! JUST FOR STOPPING THE BULLYING OF A 18 YR OLD KID, WITH MENTAL AGE OF A 10 YR OLD. A BREEDING GROUND FOR FERAL RATS. JUST BREAD MORE HATE. A STUPID CONCEPT BY OUR SOCIETY. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DAMAGE ON KIDS WITH M/H ISSUES DOING TIME IN THERE, ARE NOW OUR HOMELESS,ALCOHOLIC,ADDICTS WITH P.T.S.D. STILL DAMAGED FROM THIS "SHORT SHARP SHOCK" MOST INMATES WERE JUST MESSED UP KIDS WHO "SLIPPED THROUGH THE NET" OF PROPER UPBRINGINGS, LOVE, CARE, DIRECTION, ACCEPTANCE ETC. (THE SOCIAL WORKER AT WHATTON D.C. NOTTINGHAM, USED TO PUT HIS HAND DOWN YOUR PANTS,FEEL OUR BALLS & COCK, THEN SMELL HIS FINGERS & SAY "AH..A NICE YOUNG MAN" AS SOME KIND OF WEIRD TEST TO SEE IF WE GRASSED TO SCREWS-WHO WERE PRESENT!!? VERY THERAPEUTIC EH?
Much as I like the oft-to-this-day-repeated ITV 70s sitcoms Rising Damp and On The Buses, this show knocks spots off them both. And yet it never gets a repeat showing (other than the rather obscure Forces TV). I find myself asking why. Can't be the old "PC" issue - Rigsby and Stan Butler were hardly that! So perhaps the reason is contractual? I had heard there was a bit of "trouble" from Robert Lindsay as regards showing it again. I hope not as he has nothing to be ashamed of here. This is a vastly - vastly - underrated comedy series. And one that only got better with each series.
Like bolam and the likely lads, I doubt that Lindsay stopped any repeats. One, he couldn’t. Two , he gets repeat fees. That’s what bolam said; it was bewes creating a hard luck story and completely unfounded anyway.
Very inaccurate, the NCO is wearing a 'Staybrit' badge and they weren't introduced until well after National Service. Plus he wears his beret like a raw recruit.
Rest in peace Tony Selby. Darned fine actor.
@Ed Poe 😮i was shocked at your comment about Gerrard Ryder, what a shame, plays a great part in Get Some In, this show is greatness.
Agreed. Mr Selby was a true legend.

Also from Durban
I thank god l grew up in the 70's, the best shows ever.
Best music, too.
I used to love this show and It Ain't Half Hot, Mum. Which will never be shown again because apparently it "offends" ethnic sensibilities. Ah diddums.
I went thro that in the 70`s 👍👍 about right ......
My dad was RAF Regiment…..they nailed it in this episode!
It is a pleasure to continuously happen upon programmes that take one back. Aye, Get Some In!
I was USAF recruit when this was in its third season. Brings back some memories except back then I wasn’t laughing! 😁
Tony Selby was magical in this class acting R.IP From a mc Jockstrap
This is excellent old comedy 👏
Isn't it just. And it's genuinely funny. Many ITV sit-coms from the 70s just don't cut it anymore, but this one does. Man About The House is another.
Soles, plim, pairs, one !!
Blest Blues!!
Brilliant !!!
Thanks for uploading. Classic serries. Very much enjoying!

That kit scene was really good, he nearly fucked it right at the end. Great piece of acting
@@johnlacey7126 Oh yes ;)
Good to see some good old British comedy again x
This is brilliant best comedy from the 70s
How many takes did Tony Selby use to get the kit issue scene correct?
Just watched that scene.
Five minutes into the second half and read your comment, it was exactly what I was thinking.

Thanks for taking the time to upload - brings back memories
9:58 "The finest regiment in the world!" according to Winston Churchill. 😊
This comedy is superb.
The way Tony Selby handed out the kit was fantastic 😂
that was a younger Joe Sugden off Emmerdale in the kit room at the beginning
@@johnnyboy62parker39 No. Joe was Frazer Hines. That was Jack Sugden, actor Clive Hornby.
@@teecee1567 correct get a cookie

You sure it wasn't your dodgy spelling?
Thanks I thought it was…
The barracks look like HMS Raleigh in 1973. Watching this, I'm thinking I should have joined the RAF.
I was at Raleigh in 1974 and I agree...

Broken caps lock key?
If im correct, the stores guy was the same actor who played Jack Sugden in Emmerdale Farm.
Yep, Clive Hornby, R.I.P.
Brilliant made me chuckle. 10/10
Very funny. Great to see it hasn't dated as much as most some other 70s comedies
Love the RAF regiment bit.Is this where they got there “Rock Apes” nickname? 😱
Is that “ Jack Sugden “
Aka Clive Hornby playing store man?
Yes
Need to share this to Rishi Sunak.
I'm guessing you're someone who wouldn't be eligible for NS, whether age or meeting minimum fitness levels.
👍🏾👍🏾
I have to admit, I didn't see Corporal Othello coming.
Marsh's wife looks like Ruth Ellis
Ben Harper
Jockstrap it lasts for 2 years 😂😂😂
£200! That must be at retail price!

Hairy Ainu..........Hokkaido.
Kit scene nicked from Carry on Sergeant.
I joined the British Army in 1997, left 2003. Worse job ever.
Was Get Some In filmed at a real RAF Station would like to know please
Series 1 was at Hobbs Barracks near Felbridge in Surrey - all gone now.
11:58 'hussif' (housewife i.e. sewing kit)!
💜👍✈
The corporal is a bully 😮😅
Always loved this but shows why national service should never exist
Actually, it shows just why it should.
2:10 What the name of all Pongos is that?
that would be an anti foot fungus trough. They used to have them in the public pool here not too long ago.
Uh-oh, aspect ratio problem. That kinda spoils it. I know alot of people can't see it but it really bugs a nerd like me.
watch on vlc media player and change aspect idiot
There is a reason why the 70s mercifully ended and this programme is one reason.
get a life. gen x here still alive and better for the tough life i had. man up simp
Wrong. There is only one reason and that is because after 1979 we had 1980. The one and only reason!
Very inaccurate, the NCO is wearing a 'Staybrit' badge and they weren't introduced until well after National Service. Plus he wears his beret like a raw recruit.
+grimsmith1 Its a comedy show and not mean't to be absolutely accurate!
It's a comedy not a documentary - relax
In the first episode his belt is upside down for the first half...
It’s an ok show but a lot of over acting
It's not Shakespeare, darling.
This tried to be an RAF version of 'it ain't half hot mum ' unfortunately it failed.
I think "Get Some In" is great.
This is brilliant get some in 😆
in what way was it a failure? I see it went for at least 5 seasons. I think it's good British shows don't just go on and on and on and on....
Disagree, hilarious and so accurate. I joined in 1991, despite being set in 1955 not a huge amount had changed by the time I joined.
Chris Holland It’s far better than it ain’t half hot mum ! Funnier.
paint
Lindsay was terrible in this cannot believe he ever worked again
I must be watching something different to you then.
its like watching pait dry
Bb
Or paint even!
Jack sugden from emmerdale
I might have sworn that there`s a familiar face, but doubt I`d have managed to pin it down on `Jack Sugden.`
