Pssh, I play like Magnus when he memes, Ding's move is child's play.
Sadly you can say that you still don't play like a world Champion, because right now Ding is not playing like a World Champion. At 1900 at my best, I was never a very strong player, but I saw that coming a good way in the distance. Ding will not have missed it as such, it will have been on his radar for a good number of moves. But right now his mind is not in balance and he knew he would be getting counterplay when he played rb2, after playing ph6. His brain just moved the wrong piece first. I am feeling so sorry for him.

It was really a no-brainer. When the commentator said "Ding played the unbelievable..." I simply knew that he didn't see the queen sac. Which really IS unbelievable.
Sure, when someone said that this is The move, I found it immediatelly, but if noone said nothing, if I was playing... no way :)
@@IvanToman glad i'm not the only one. No idea why I'm super average at chess but still like to watch it. And it feels like everyone else spectating is a chess genius. I know just enough to sort of understand the insane commitment it takes to get really good which scares me off from even playing.

The fact that both Magnus after this game and Hikaru after their game said that something felt off and different about Ding says a lot. Magnus' interview afterward felt odd, like he didn't even want to take credit for a great game played by him. I hope Ding is okay

They are pretty humble guys. I get no joy beating someone because they made a massive blunder. Such a shame the game ends this way, it was a really beautiful game beforehand.
Whatever is going on with Ding is clearly more than just nerves. I hope he pulls through whatever crisis he’s going through. He certainly deserves respect and support from the chess community.

If you watch some of the full stream, you can actually see him falling asleep at times, trying to keep himself awake... He seems very tired/sleep deprived.
The Communist Party has overworked him with unhuman hours to bring prizes back. He should move to Taiwan to escape.
Honestly, I feel bad for the guy. We've all played like crap at some point... and yes, he shouldn't be making these mistakes, but he clearly is not used to this added pressure of expectation as World Champion. I suspect this is a low point for his career, unless he embarrasses himself in the WC match.
@@internationalpatzer He tried to play ball with Magnus the Great then snapped from the pressure. Nothing to be ashamed of. Happens to anyone trying to stay rigid against a force of nature.
You can see the passion in Magnus's reaction as he even doesn't want his opponent to make huge mistakes. Some players are celebrating after the move but he's the contrary.
This feels like one of those moves where you saw the mate in 2 and aknowledged that you had to defend against it, and then you start analyzing the resulting position after you defend and play the move for that position instead.

i wish stockfish and other computer tools didnt exist. Programming was my first love. i realised instantly no human could beat a computer with enough flops and memory. Computers destroy the game of chess because it is becoming simply "who's smart enough to see what the computer 'thinks' is the best move (computers dont think)

I feel horrible for Ding. He does NOT want to be playing chess. He's only playing because he's the reigning world champion. He admitted that had he lost the WCC against Nepo that he would have quit chess forever! He wants out! Can you imagine the pressure he feels from his home country, China? Perhaps internal pressure more than external, but still... oh, man. Poor guy!

I think its more pressure from his family that he become rich as Magnus. Chess isnt that big in China (in contrast to India), Ding said no one in China actually knows him. He knows that if he plays his hand well he could rake in huge wealth but thats also a lot of pressure and I think thats what spiraled him into depression.

I'm glad you dialed down the jokes. It is an important moment to cover but no one is enjoying it. I like the theory that Ding calculated the moves and then played the first 2 in the wrong order. He has been criticized for move order switching before. I hope he finds some joy in playing again.
I doubt Ding is reading the comments here but it is a classy move.
I think he was expecting Rh4 and thought he had one more tempo. He simply missed Qxh7.
I did consider the idea that Ding got into a line, then forgot which move he was on; but he only spent three minutes on the move. That's nothing for players at this level.

I like the wit and the clever analyses. Ding was not well a couple of years ago. Maybe the stress is getting to him .we wish him well.
Who knows what’s really going on but Ding is depressed and obviously has a confidence problem. Let’s hope he gets the help he needs and recovers.

I agree. Sometimes everybody has something going in their life or they just need a break from it all. Hasn't everybody gone through that at work and you tell your boss I need to take time off vacation days etc... It's got to be hard having the same reediness and concentration to be a top player every tournament. It really seems impossible to do.

Yup, I've seen that exact move in puzzles dozens of times.
I wish magnus or hikaru would reach out personally to ding. They knew more than anyone that something is off and they are all brothers fighting the same war. They are also maybe the only two on a list of people that know him and have the financial means to do something like fly him somewhere for help etc.
It's incredibly strange if you keep your eyes on Ding's face throughout those final moves. There's is absolutely NO trace of a "whoops! What have I done!" moment whatsoever. He pushes the rook, watches that Magnus is going to take with the Queen, then instantly offers his hand. I don't know exactly why but it doesn't even look like it was a blunder. It just looks like he threw the game... Who knows what's going on with him but I hope he's okay on a personal level.

There is absolutely no moment where you can even see a flick that he realises that he's made a mistake. It's almost robotic from start, i.e. pre rook move, to finish.

I think his lack of reaction just means whatever he’s going through is worse than we thought. He reached for the pen before handshaking so it clearly was a mistake. Any GM would have gasped or reacted strongly but his will to fight is so little he just doesn’t even react, doesn’t even care. Honestly it’s heartbreaking, and anyone who thinks this is funny and laughs at his expense, you’re a monster.

Petrosian loss against Bronstein might be similar level blunder. 1956
In the last game of the 1892 world championship, Chigorin (a great tactician) made a similar blunder, where he hung a mate-in-2 in a winning position. (Or actually: that mate was even simpler than the one Ding Liren missed here. Unexplainable, how an attacking player like Chigorin could miss that!)
Another big blunder in a world championship match was when Marshall hung a piece against Lasker in the 1907 championship. (Similarly unexplainable, because Marshall as well was known as a great tactical player...)

@@epicchess2021 Mental health issues is becoming less of a taboo in other sports, like tennis or football for instance. It would be good to discuss it in chess. The world champion is mentally imploding and nothing seems to be done for him. It's painful to watch. Imagine if he committed suicide?!

You are overblowing the situation with unreasonable scenarios. If that what you say is true, then all Grandmasters from the former Soviet Union should have needed extensive psychological help, but they were beating in chess everyone, worldwide. Any sportsman can suffer a prolonged period of stress due to personal (health) issues. After a long period of not playing, maybe Ding is going around tournaments because he decided he must, considering his world champion title, and also because he must restore confidence. He is not extrovert like Hikaru, who handless his stress behind "I don't care anyway" comments, which are utter nonsense and open lying to oneself. But Ding is a quiet man, true to himself, and for him this should be a slow process.

Ding needs to step out of the firing line, get his life together, and allow a Gukesh-Nakamura world championship match. Such a match would be torture for Ding; he surely doesn't need that. It's really sad.
If Ding steps out it would be good for chess (Naka fans) but if Ding wins vs Gukesh it would be outrageous.

Plot twist: Ding computed every possible move from there on and all the posibilities ended up in checkmate, therefore ending the game as soon as possible
No joke comment today. It's nearly 5 AM in my time zone and I cannot fall asleep due to some sketchy research chemicals that I bought from my DiDi driver. I'll just say this. Ding is playing like an idiot. It's true. You know what though? Everything fell into place for him to beat Nepo last year (and he truly played OUT OF HIS MIND to win that set), and no one can take his world championship away from him. Even if he falls to an 1800 rating over the next 10 years, you know what? He still held the title. I would personally lean into that outcome if I were Ding, trolling everyone I beat on my way to the crown and forcing Kramnick to launch the investigation to dwarf all other investigations.

@@epicchess2021 He's been down since at least January really, but I'm glad more people are starting to realise the seriousness of his situation. Depression has been cited, but I think it's worse than that - I think it's PASC (which can also cause symptoms of depression).

Magnus puts so much pressure on his opponents that they do, sometimes, crack under the strain. He is the lethal combination of Fischer and Karpov that GM Kasparov credits him to be. And he is a sportsman as well.

Something is not right with Ding. Went missing for months after winning the World Title and has been playing sub 2500 chess since. FIDA needs to have a chat with this 100% out of form World Champion to rebuild the Brand.

He played the move out of order. Rb2 was the move intended after h6. The engine has it slightly white but black is under a lot of pressure even if Ding makes the moves in the correct order. I also thought it was a transmission error at the moment. It's a terrible situation for sure.
I am below a beginner, have no clue about strategy at all..... you did a great job describing the moves, what could have been moved, why they moved it, and what the possible outcomes could have been.... Great work! The Right side of that board was so heavy for Ding, and he.... didn't defend it seemed. good job describing, that was intense and enjoyable!

This exact same thing has happened to Fischer as well. He played a rookie move that lost him the bishop and the game. It can happen to anyone.
Hopefully Ding is alright after this and in general. I wish him the best of things and I hope he keeps his head up :)
Not this way, and it wasn't really the rookie move. Yes, Spassky won the bishop but the real point was the pawn activity for white which Fischer miscalculated (counting error, probably).
Not even close! Fischer blundered a bishop for several pawns in a very complicated endgame. Try plugging in the game to Stockfish and find the easy win. Let me help you in advance - you won't find a win. The move was 29... Bxh2 in the Spassky match game 2 after which stockfish 16.1 evaluates the position as a mere +0.7 advantage for white at 28 depth. After white's response 30. g3 trapping the bishop the evaluation changes to +0.2. Unclear at best but more likely drawn with best play. Ding on the other hand blundered mate in two.
This is why you shouldn't be repeating whatever nonsense you hear.

If you know snooker, this is like the Masters final where Ding Junhui just started hitting balls without lining up the shot or thinking. His brain was fried and he wanted out of there, being outplayed by O'Sullivan was too much.
Sticking with the snooker analogy, Ding Liren's plight reminds me of James Wattana after the King of Thailand gave him that golden cue to win the world title. His form tanked after, he lost his attacking game and couldn't handle the pressure.

I just started playing chess but I intuitively do some of the things you mentioned! You said “take care of the knight before you push the pawns” and I thought of some recent games where that was def happening naturally. Very reassuring actually because I’m teaching myself 👍
