It's still in the top 50 of games per Revenue on Steam (it was in the top 10 for the first week or two). So I'd imagine that the sales have more that recouped the development costs with that kind of day 1 sales alone. I might be wrong tho, but it's a grim world if being top 10 in sales on the biggest gaming platform isn't enough to make you profitable.

For me it was well below their previous game, wrath of the righteous. In Rogue Trader I did not even like the classes and how they worked, Only by the end of the game I at least started to get what's what. Companions where below that from wrath, combat was TB and I prefer rtwp, the music was league above in wrath. Never had gamebraking bugs in wrath (perhaps other had, don't know), in rogue trader had to cheat my way trough some bugs with a mod.
Hope they get back to something similar to wrath for their next game. Just make sure I can go myth again, loved that shit.
My dream is a game like wrath but with the quality of everything from Baldur's Gate 3. Even if its TB.

@@sethrougen8968I mean, WoTR has had 6 DLCs over 2 years, so that really isn't that far off from Paradox's publishing approach of a new DLC every quarter. And I think they'd be more than happy to do it just to breath some new life into the IP they brought, and introduce the setting to Pathfinder and 40k fans that got into the hobby after Vampire's time in the sun had passed into being more of a cult classic setting than a mainstream 'nerdy' brand.
Really the only reason Paradox DLC feels so abusive is because they support their successful games with such a long tail end, that they eventually wrack up dozens of expansions stacking on top of each other before the project is abandoned (which does obviously lead to a lot of balance issues for their strategy games though when new updates need to account for such a huge swarth of optional content and playstyles that owner of the base game might not have access to).

  • @Pers0n97

Rogue Trader has a HUGE potential for more content and feature.
    - The act 2 hint as a real "sandbox" game in there. I think they could manage to rework a bit the game to have a RNG map (solar system) generator, with just the main story point fix. They would then just have to drop new planets (basically self contained dungeons and story lines) to expend that sandbox bit by bit, thus making the game way more replayable than it is right now.
    - Space combat could be expended A LOT too, mainly by letting you unlock a bigger ship (the one we have is abnormally small for a rogue trader) and letting you build, customize and control a proper fleet (two frigates and four smaller escorts). I'd also love to get more options for my ship, like having access to fighter and bomber bays for your ship.
    - More enemy factions. The game has a pretty decent bestiary, but they could spice things up by bringing the Necrons a bit sooner in the sandbox part of the game, expending them a bit (right now they are literally 5 units, which isn't much) and they could add more xenos races like the Orks our the more exotic Rak'Gols.
Also one thing I've noticed is that the 2 announced DLC are basically 2 Dogmatic Followers, which is cool and all, but Heretic and Iconoclast could use some help (I feel like they dropped the ball by not making "the Commisar" and the Sslyth from act 3 be possible (and mutually exclusive) followers.

They don’t even have to shift the focus from the Imperium, just show some love to the Adeptus Mechanicus or the Assasinorum. I personally would love for a book centring around the Eldar in particular, but honestly any perspective other than that of humanity is welcome at this point.

Feel like it would be hard to do given how inflexible many parts of the Warhammer 40k universe is. Rogue Traders is the only immediate thing I can think off with enough freedom and power to do CRPG things, and that's because they were specifically designed for that kinda thing. I'm honestly quite sad at how little they made use of the freedom to have Xenos in their party which Rogue Traders have, even a Sslyth such as Malice would have made more sense than the Drukhari. And now it seems they are going with another Imperial faction for the next companion

Unless they go in a completely different direction, I would expect to see combat based cRPG with some realm-managemnet involved. There is less realm management in Rogue Trader, but the fact that some exists makes me feel like that's the niche they are carving out for themselves. It would feel weird for Owlcat to make something like a band of adventurers travelling around together a la DOS2 or BG3 from Larian.
If they go back to Pathfinder but in 2E, Extinction Curse or Outlaws of Alkenstar I could see fitting in to that theme, either you taking over the Circus or the Crime Syndicate. And the next Games Workshop game doesn't have to be a Rogue Trader, tho I would be cool with that. It could be set in their Age of Sigmar (Fantasy) universe, or use Necromunda as a setting. So many options. Maybe they can do the next Shadowrun game. They seem to excel at taking tabletop games and turning them into fun CRPG experiences. I just looked at my bookshelf and saw tons of games that they coud turn into cool CRPGs. So whatever they do, I am going to play it!

Cheliax and Varisia are the most popular parts of the setting (or were), so APs involving them are much more likely. Kingmaker was previously the most popular AP, which is undoubtedly why they decided to go there. Numeria would be cool, but the appeal for most PF/D&D fans is significantly lower, which probably rules it out from just the marketing consideration. But who knows? After all, Wrath and all its zany epic gameplay was a bit of a surprise too.

I like the idea of them making their own IP. Maybe more risky but I think they have a big enough fan base to support them, I've kick-started Wotr and Rouge Trader. Obsidian with PoE is a good example I think. But, only time will tell.

Is Obsidian a good example tho? We're talking about a developer who was on the brink for a decade, mainly surviving by making games for other studios. Pillars 1 did fine margins-wise but was a decidedly low budget game. Deadfire was larger in scope and budget but flopped pretty hard. Since then the only noteworthy release is Outer Worlds.

Starfinder cRPG would be awesome. I remember this art piece that circulated the web few months ago, that was announced as Starfinder cRPG (which turned out to be fake, but still). There aren't enough turn based cRPGs with such a mixture of sci-fi and magic.
I still have hope they will change their mind about PF2e and actually create a game for that system. It would sell really well, since people loved Kingmaker/WOTR and PF2e is the direct competitor for D&D 5e (and BG3 is extremely popular now). Paizo's announcements about their game partnerships disappointed a lot of fans (a diablo-esque clone and some weird mobile-like game, using "Pathfinder" only in name), so there is still a large group of people wanting to actually play a decent PF2e cRPG.

  • @nikidelvalle
    @nikidelvalle 7 місяців тому

On the one hand, I'm glad they are finally going to be conclusively done adding content to the main campaign of Wrath of the Righteous. I still haven't finished the game yet because it's important to me that I can experience all of the content in one playthrough, especially for a game as long as Wrath where there's a good chance another playthrough won't be for quite a while. This is especially considering that I honestly think the DLC has made said campaign far too long, not to mention has greatly disrupted the XP curve. But still I'm glad I can finally play the game and know I'm seeing it all, it's amazing and so I want to see all of it.
On the other hand, I am incredibly disappointed that Owlcat has done nothing to address the obvious problems with certain Mythic Paths, and ended up prioritizing these DLCs over making sure the core game was finished. As a backer who added more money in specifically to unlock the Gold Dragon stretch goal, I feel outright deceived by how obviously rushed and poorly written that Mythic Path is. Not to mention that at least so far they haven't put in the work to add certain content that dataminers uncovered plans for that doesn't even look that hard to implement, like the extra Devil content with Galfrey. I can only hope the last DLC will release *something*, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Especially after the """Enhanced Edition""".
I still love Owlcat and I'm looking forward to what they do in the future that isn't Warhammer (just not my setting lol), but I can't help but admit I've lost a bit of respect for them and certainly trust over the post-release cycle of Wrath of the Righteous. For as much as I like the DLC they've released, I would've preferred if they had prioritized getting the core game finished and doing right by backers first... not to mention on releasing an Enhanced Edition that actually lives up to the standard they themselves established with Kingmaker. And if they needed the funding of DLC to justify that, one of the DLCs should've been for expanding the mythic paths. Other devs like Obsidian and Larian would've never let their games languish with such significant problems and never would've ignored the community's concerns about them.

Call of Chtulu and World of darkness would be cool, but they're not really geared towards munchkinism and epic combat so Owlcat would have to take a different approach, which I hope is not asking too much after 3 games focused on combat. I think they have the writers to pull it off.

5:58 I have yet to read any of the comments. But say Owlcat sees the success of BG3 and Paizo also sees the success of BG3. now the market is prime, and ready for a more crunchy CRPG. My hope is that Owlcat gets the backing to produce if not AAA close to AAA Pathfinder 2E title in the unreal engine that enjoys the same success as BG3. BG3 is a unicorn in the industry right now b/c it’s presentation and ease of access to learn “crunchy” mechanics. This has created some opportunities for other developers to mimic or even improve upon our beloved genre. I feel like the market would now be ready since CRPG’s are more in the mainstream now, and with a developer like Owlcat producing arguably one of the best CRPGs(Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous) of all time next to BG3… I just don’t see how it could not be or how someone else, on the executive side of these companies isn’t thinking of this.

The change from Unity might also be fallout from the previous CEO trying to retroactively change the licensing costs to developers that has scared away a few other studios that I’d say were similar size to Owlcat. Even though the CEO has been fired, there’s a few people on the board of that company that are causing some developers to treat Unity’s about face in light of that scandal with extreme skepticism.

I’m still praying for the day we finally get a Warhammer Fantasy CRPG. As others have said, with a now established relationship with GW and Old World being launched next year, plus the wild success of the Total War: Warhammer franchise, surely a WFRP CRPG has to be coming soon?
My only concerns would be how the career system is handled. WFRP has a pretty fluid career system, with the ability to branch into different related careers as a character progresses. I’d hate to see a WFRP CRPG get locked into a ‘class’ or archetype system.
Other than that, the lore and setting is so well established with such great depth, it’s high time someone took advantage and brought us the great game we deserve!

Actually love the story telling they've been capable of. Doesnt have the same BG3 polish but IMO the characters and story are just as much if not more compelling. My only criticism is once you've committed to a mythic path the story is very much foretold, a bit more veriation in the outcome would have been better in my view. Overall though, happy with the developer they make decent stuff. Also congrats on your channel really taking off, well deserved!

If they are hiring for Unreal, maybe the recent thing with Unity scared them enough to want to permanently jump ship (even though Unity rolled back on that daft idea of theirs). Starfinder would make sense, and even if Pathfinder isn't that popular, it would be an excellent opportunity to *try* and make it popular. I mean, how popular is Pathfinder in the first place? I'm hardly a person in the know but until I played Wrath of the Righteous, I had no idea Pathfinder as a game system even existed. Now that Hasbro has basically fired everyone who makes D&D, one might even say that Paizo is in the perfect place to take advantage of the opportunity to really push their systems, and it seems a great way to do that would be owlcat as well.

As for what IP, I cannot imagine it being Starfinder, as that has zero pull and wouldn't justify a new engine. Nor anything White Wolf, since Paradox is committed to keeping its properties in-house. So I'd have to think it's something Warhammer related. But 40K or fantasy I don't know.
