I remember listening to these several times when I worked at Infinity as an engineering intern in the late 80s. Seeing them in person was incredible and to say they sounded amazing is an understatement. I've never heard anything like them since.
Myself and a buddy got to hear these at HiFi Haven in New Brunswick, NJ around 1985. They took us out onto the street and next door over and up into a dedicated room with these in them. It was quite a treat! You could stand in between them and it sounded like the orchestra was sprawled out in front of you in a huge soundstage.
Heard the Infinity RS at CES way back in the day. My non-audiophile friends wanted to leave, but I wouldn't. I was glued to the chair with my eyes closed. I still remember that experience.
I had a set of infinity speakers as a teenager with these emit tweeters in the cabinet they sound amazing. I modified the crossover and add Mylar capacitors. Built my own preamp and solid silver rca cables myself. Soldered like 15 resistors inside the preamp to have plenty of range in volume. I Also had a DAC and cd player.They sound amazing only had two 8" woofers. I had two mono block tube amps. My dad was a big audiophile. He designed and built his own speakers with a transmission line box designs. I helped him make them. It was so involved remember weighing the acoustastuff for the sub enclosure to get the exact amount needed to be tuned properly. The box was multiple layers of mdf on all sides. Top for mids and highs was solid mdf layers about 8 layers of 3/4 mdf. They where beautiful and had rounded edges like yours. My dad has passed away due to bone cancer. I really miss him. I enjoyed listening to the system when we where done. It was the best surround sound you could imagine with two speakers. The room had to be setup to get everything to sound perfect. I know what you mean about getting your room ready for the best listening experience.
I really appreciate the honesty and the sharing of knowledge. I’m still trying to find more on room acoustics and this has helped even if it wasn’t perfect. Those things look insane, btw... would love to hear them.
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to walk through the setup. Room design isn’t about perfection, it’s about compromise. Our ears were designed for the heavens, not for Earthly confines. Try to design a room for your ears and you’ll simply never get out of the design stage. Your compromise is a reasonable one and you’ve identified a setup that works, which is more than I can say for many listening rooms. Well done! I only recently got a subwoofer for my tannoy reveal monitor speakers and welcome to the machine has been a favourite of mine to listen to now, I can only attempt to imagine what something like that sounds like what an awesome piece of engineering, love your channel thanks for sharing!!
Testing a great stereo system with the crappy music of today is like testing an F-16 pulling a cargo load. You need classical music, great rockers, Bossa Nova, etc.
I remember seeing an Audio Video Interiors magazine back in the early 90's which showed Fabio's home theater. He had these for the front AND rear channels! It was easily a million dollar home theater. I'd love to see that article again. My current work has been with Arnie's friend, enthusiast, inventor and physicist, Bob Carver. Bob and i spent this past octomber and november voicing his new line source x-overs for the new ALS1000 speakers demonstrated at a few shows around the country . I can not wait for everyone to get to experience a fine rival as maybe one of the finest line source speakers ever made. I love your room sir, you have given me many ideas. dreegez Yeah. However my dream system is a pair of Martin Logan electrostatic speakers and a 15 inch subwoofer. I listen to a lot of EDM and dubstep so I need a system that will keep up. And I heard great stuff that ML is a great brand so I want to try them out.
If you listen to acoustic experts, unfortunately there are just a few of them left, or measure the room’s freq. response you’ll probably understand that your “interesting gentleman” is either delusional or he has no idea what’s he is talking about.

In the late 70s or early 80s I wandered into Lyric HiFi in NYC. Michael Kay had just finished a major renovation. The rooms to my memory and understanding were on huge springs, and I recall the doors being meat locker doors. I was a teenager and he was more than happy to take me into the main room where a version of those speakers were. My mouth was agape just seeing them. The demo stays with me to this day.
What a beautiful system. I`m going to America in 3 years, yeah its a long time. But I`m willing to drive the 6 hour trip from Rapid City just to sit in that chair and close my eyes for a bit.
I come there every year for the Bolder Boulder 10k wheelchair division. would love to stop by and check it out. anyone can do loud. but loud and amazingly clear. plus i love that u are using a mix of new and old school.
Listening to Welcome to the Machine on a good set of headphones gives me goosebumbs, I can not imagine how amazing it would sound on your setup! I might have to make the drive up from Pueblo one of these days to witness this masterpiece.
+KuroDensetsu Headphones only give you a very small idea of what a good set of speakers can do. Headphones are only good for apartment dwellers. Everybody else should listen to some decent speakers.
I know I'm a bit late here, but I do want to chime in, there are headphones, and there are over ear (and in ear) monitors. Those are a whole different beast, and deserve better than your reply gives them. A good set gives you about perfect reproduction and soundstage, lacking only in palpable bass (you can clearly hear it, but it's not resonating through your whole body, obviously). Especially in ear monitors - the bass is utterly astonishing, as is the clarity. To use something I read someone else say - "It's like the band in _inside_ _my_ _head_ ... **edited for spelling**
Colorado... I'm going to the US from Sweden to visit a friend in Chicago, but i HAVE to take a detour and listen to that, and get an experience of a lifetime. I had a friend many years ago when i was in the early 20s (now dead in cancer) that probably introduced me to the true beauty of music with a pair of B&O Penta and Mike Oldfield - Voyager... it was a jawdropping experience. So i cannot even begin to imagine what that will sound like . I am in awe, im jealous, and im happy for you. From a fellow music-lover.

I've dropped out of computer engineering and have jumped at the option i had to pursue audio engg and music production in a year ... i have an assignment coming up in room design and i think this video has given me a serious edge compared the content taught in class. It never ceases to amaze me to see audiophiles doing things that add zero fidelity to their systems. Look at those huge power cords. I'm sure they are pure stranded 6 gauge copper wires and they take that and plug it into a wall outlet using 12 AWG romex with an aluminum gnd, all single strand. I could go on and on but I have a record to play.
I was able to hear pair of these at a Car audio national show in 1990 or 1991. Dolby labs was giving a demo of frequency response and sound stage. I have never heard anything since then that duplicated that sound stage. Very impressive very nice system.
Great video series, Paul. It says a lot about a company and their leadership to undertake an endeavor like this. Good to know that PS Audio didn't settle for "Okay" and actually went for it, and learned something in the process.
I heard these speakers in the old building- I've also, heard the term, "the speakers just disappear" in the room. Yup, these fucking monsters totally disappeared. The sound was coming from behind the speakers, near the rear wall. Flippin weird but oh, so cool!
Great to see the final product! Sorry about the Helmholtz resonators, but it sounds like you had a ton of fun with the project. I'll be designing my dedicated room next year incorporating a couple Power Plants.
Beautiful speakers. For those not familiar with really high end audio good sound stage is only available with recordings that preserve stereo location. Stereo audio systems are capable of placing instruments and performers accurately around in front of the listener without resorting to a surround sound (multi speaker) setup. Close your eyes and band members seem to be standing at various locations in your listening room with each instrument clearly voiced. The recording engineer needs to know what they are doing when the music is recorded and the record company has to want to preserve the sound through the manufacturing process. So if you have a good recording and set your speakers up properly it is possible to get good sound stage with just 2 much lesser speakers then the ones shown in this video.
Did it with a pair of Klipsch K-Horns and a single LaScala as a center. three monoblocks a McIntosh c2300 preamp. Not a huge Beatles fan but LOVE is an amazing example going as far as to place an instrument behind me. Best 3D soundstage I found to date.
What a beautiful room. I would lose my mind being able to listen to pink Floyd's Wish you were here in its entirety. The separation...the clarity...omidirectional appearance. Wow.

They could hear all day long the recording of a train passing by for the reason it's well recorded ! Or a granny crawling on a harp for the same reason... They love disgusting reverbs and easylistening crap . They of course almost never go to concerts, don't play any instrument and naturally fall into audiofoolness. Just by looking at the ratio size of the room/speakers you can tell the guy is out of his mind !
Very special speakers, I don't have to travel that far to listen to them. When I try to describe how it sounds, I use my own term "Niagara Waterfall" sound. The amazing amount of sound you've never experienced before.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with the room acoustics experiment. It made me wiser. Especially that the Helmholz traps didn't perform as anticipated. Sad but educating. It really shows how complex this task is. Generous of you to share! I'm in the process of building traps myself into an adjacent confined space. I have done some research the last couple of years. I am the guy that always wanted a system like this. Best speaker I heard in person was a large set of Mirages, couldn't believe the sound, just sound real. The detail was out of this world.....but these babies sound like something entirely better I dare say.
I would be very interested in applying for an apprenticeship. Seriously though, thank you for taking the time to produce these videos. I am currently building my first "Mid-Fi" system and your series has been a great resource. The process is somewhat addictive, however I suppose in a relatively healthy way. For anyone who cares or has helpful advice, my current system is made up of: Pro-Ject 1 Xpression III Classic turntable w/ Sumiko Pearl cart, Arcam A19 integrated amp w/ a pretty decent built in MM phono pre-amp and finally a pair of B&W 685 S2s... Feel like the next upgrades will be the cartridge (really like Ortofon 2M Bronze or Black), then a 8" B&W sub (Don't wanna overpower my bookshelfs)... Anyways, thanks again for the series and how lucky are we to be able to enjoy all this incredible music! Thanks

The 685 S2's are a VERY nice speaker-better than a lot of the higher end B&W's and blows away a lot of Martin Logan, Energy, Paradigm, etc bookshelf speakers. I'd say his system is comprised of very capable gear. Nothing like some dude on the internet crapping on other people for no reason.
I recenty upgraded my cart to the Ortofon black and wow.... sounds incredible. Also, got some black mamba interconnects. Honestly, I'm very pleased with the B&W's, I purchased a sub to give me a lil mmmfff. Loving my set-up, I'm in a place currently I don't want to upgrade. Eventually I'll probably purchase a nice phono pre-amp, but for the time being I'm just listenin to some jams. Peace and love gentlemen

Back in the late 70’s, I briefly sold high end audio equipment. It’s always fascinated me how some can be such audio perfectionists when our own ears are so imperfect. ‘Free country, do what you want, but I know my old ears aren’t good enough to justify such extravagance. A pair of restored Bose 901s with a nice old Pioneer SX-1050 receiver, (and an added Bluetooth adapter to allow digital music) are all I want.
If i where in the area I would definitely stop by. I really enjoy a good setup. I Don't see it much though. Causes a strain on the marriage for sure. Wife doesn't understand until you are done and it's amazing.

It's funny that this video has bad hissing and a heavy noise gate making the sound kinda bad. Yet it comes from a nutty audiophile who is apparently obsessed with sound. Lol.

You simply CANNOT do ANY, REAL justice to a system like the one shown in this video, here on a severely compressed online video played back on the viewer's laptop speakers or cheesy headphones!... One must experience a truly high-end audio system as this *in person* to know what it really can sound like!... And depending on the source audio quality, it can be just like an original, live, studio performance!

One simply cannot compare or "evaluate" any audio setup properly over the internet, while listening to the sound through a crappy laptop speaker system or on a cellphone, etc!... There is *no* comparison to actually being there yourself, in the same room as this system, (or any good setup), and hearing the *ACTUAL* *equipment* with your own ears, instead of just a *VIDEO* of the equipment playing!... *THAT* *major* difference is what so many people don't seem to comprehend anymore!... The internet is a great tool for many things, but when it comes to evaluating audio and video equipment performance *properly*, you absolutely *MUST* do that *in-person*, rather than trying to evaluate it by watching a video of it, regardless of the video's production quality!... Just the fact that it is a *recording* of the original performance, (of the equipment), means that the audio quality has already been considerably compromised!... Add to that the fact that most people that are watching these videos will be playing the sound back through their computer or cellphone speakers, and you just know that the resulting final audio quality that actually reaches your ears will be severely degraded even further, (over being there yourself), and so then hopefully you can see my point here... This isn't worth any further discussion time either, because of the simple fact that there is no comparison between a video of a performance and the actual performance itself right in front of you! (Again, I'm referring to equipment performance in this case.)
I'm from Asia and the infinity has been my favorite speaker.idnt have the luxury to listen to the irs v but have heard the betas .i think the separation of these design g4towers) is simply a classof its own no modern speakers does that kind of tonality and high so wonderfully.thou idnt know how modern speakers like the magics or yg sounds like.i guess the these are simply fantastic.thanks Paul for sharing.

Glad that you told about sund waves propagation throughout the room! Wary few know or think about that. All talk about angle, distance to the wall and so on, but few know how far from the wall and where to sit, and why. unfortunately it is all about compromise. :-)

But You got the Setup Man !! Outstanding. Too bad Stereo Stores don't have listening Rooms like they used to, I used to spend hours back in the Day, But Hardly Nobody have a good stereo anymore. I watched Techmoan channels video about it, and he sayed it was almost like people being in the room etc. Hair in the back of the neck going up and that sort of stuff. I think it's like a 100dB of dynamic range, but nowdays you can get that in other medias out the box I think? (if the stuff is even recorded at that range) And pretty much no... last record made around -81. But that could be around Pink Floyd and stuff...

It’s so wonderful to be able to have the experience that soothe the soul and know your alive a a good tie in life. In your opinion, what would be the more commonly preferred size woofer for a speaker tower, but in consideration we are not music exerts but high enthusiast. Having 12x 12” subs is fine if you have two tweeter towers like you have. But having only two towers and one sub box, just for starters, what size woofers will give you a good balance of lows while delivering clarity? I know brands and manufacturers go a very long way in discussions but give us you tubers the short version of it lol ..
Gotta say this series got me stoked for my future room. Almost makes me want to put my bed and computer in a stupid place and optimise my studio flat for my hifi.

iagogonzalezalvarez now that’s the gospel I’ve been looking for. This whole premise is a load of crap. This rig would be quite nice, maybe, in a larger and acoustically dead room. Just the “source rack” alcove is an audio room no-no that cannot be overcome with off-axis cancellation or ANY other way. Not to mention that point source is the way for true hi-if. Arrays are only for steering audio. Very useful where needed. In a moderately sized ROOM, that many drivers will cause summing and cancelling(lobing and comb filtering) that would take another room full of individual driver processing beyond the scope of any reasonable resource to bring back the acoustic precision of point source. This is flash and trash. The preconceived notion can be very, very influential. I’ve seen and heard of outrageous installations in my region that make me sick at the witnessing of money almost literally thrown in the bin. All because of personal shortcomings? Phallic issues? Mommy didn’t pay attention? I truly feel sorry for this bullshit. Give me two EAW KF850Ts aside with SB850s below and I’ll make you poop when you didn’t want to poop. Luckily my listening room holds 1,000 drunk people and has reflections galore, and 101db c weighted is about as QUIET as I can get it. Ugh. Seriously though, I was asked to dial in a rig at a rich guys house with like 10 pro audio amps, stupid PA speakers hung semi-discriminately around, excess in action, and I could make it sound great in a couple of spots, but the cancellations and summations were ridiculous. I honestly wanted to ask the guy what vagina smelled like. Sad stuff.
YES! "Welcome to the Machine!" But don't forget the smooth vocals of "A Pillow of Winds" from the Meddle album, or the hypnotic "Atom Heart Mother Suite," or the entirety of Obscured By Clouds. You have the perfect Pink Floyd system!

I only recently got a subwoofer for my tannoy reveal monitor speakers and welcome to the machine has been a favourite of mine to listen to now, I can only attempt to imagine what something like that sounds like what an awesome piece of engineering, love your channel thanks for sharing!!

I remember seeing an Audio Video Interiors magazine back in the early 90's which showed Fabio's home theater. He had these for the front AND rear channels! It was easily a million dollar home theater. I'd love to see that article again. Thanks for sharing these videos, these speakers are truly impressive looking, maybe one day I'll have the opportunity to hear them.
Fabio's system was Martin Logan fronts and these speakers are rear's.

In the late 70s or early 80s I wandered into Lyric HiFi in NYC. Michael Kay had just finished a major renovation. The rooms to my memory and understanding were on huge springs, and I recall the doors being meat locker doors. I was a teenager and he was more than happy to take me into the main room where a version of those speakers were. My mouth was agape just seeing them. The demo stays with me to this day.

Listening to Welcome to the Machine on a good set of headphones gives me goosebumbs, I can not imagine how amazing it would sound on your setup! I might have to make the drive up from Pueblo one of these days to witness this masterpiece.

Headphones only give you a very small idea of what a good set of speakers can do. Headphones are only good for apartment dwellers. Everybody else should listen to some decent speakers.
I know I'm a bit late here, but I do want to chime in, there are headphones, and there are over ear (and in ear) monitors. Those are a whole different beast, and deserve better than your reply gives them. A good set gives you about perfect reproduction and soundstage, lacking only in palpable bass (you can clearly hear it, but it's not resonating through your whole body, obviously). Especially in ear monitors - the bass is utterly astonishing, as is the clarity.

Colorado... I'm going to the US from Sweden to visit a friend in Chicago, but i HAVE to take a detour and listen to that, and get an experience of a lifetime. I had a friend many years ago when i was in the early 20s (now dead in cancer) that probably introduced me to the true beauty of music with a pair of B&O Penta and Mike Oldfield - Voyager... it was a jawdropping experience. So i cannot even begin to imagine what that will sound like . I am in awe, im jealous, and im happy for you.

Look at those huge power cords. I'm sure they are pure stranded 6 gauge copper wires and they take that and plug it into a wall outlet using 12 AWG romex with an aluminum gnd, all single strand. I could go on and on but I have a record to play.

I was able to hear pair of these at a Car audio national show in 1990 or 1991. Dolby labs was giving a demo of frequency response and sound stage. I have never heard anything since then that duplicated that sound stage. Very impressive very nice system.

I heard these speakers in the old building- I've also, heard the term, "the speakers just disappear" in the room. Yup, these fucking monsters totally disappeared. The sound was coming from behind the speakers, near the rear wall. Flippin weird but oh, so cool!

Beautiful speakers. For those not familiar with really high end audio good sound stage is only available with recordings that preserve stereo location. Stereo audio systems are capable of placing instruments and performers accurately around in front of the listener without resorting to a surround sound (multi speaker) setup. Close your eyes and band members seem to be standing at various locations in your listening room with each instrument clearly voiced. The recording engineer needs to know what they are doing when the music is recorded and the record company has to want to preserve the sound through the manufacturing process. So if you have a good recording and set your speakers up properly it is possible to get good sound stage with just 2 much lesser speakers then the ones shown in this video.

Did it with a pair of Klipsch K-Horns and a single LaScala as a center. three monoblocks a McIntosh c2300 preamp. Not a huge Beatles fan but LOVE is an amazing example going as far as to place an instrument behind me. Best 3D soundstage I found to date.

I am the guy that always wanted a system like this. Best speaker I heard in person was a large set of Mirages, couldn't believe the sound, just sound real. The detail was out of this world.....but these babies sound like something entirely better I dare say.
I would be very interested in applying for an apprenticeship. Seriously though, thank you for taking the time to produce these videos. I am currently building my first "Mid-Fi" system and your series has been a great resource. The process is somewhat addictive, however I suppose in a relatively healthy way. For anyone who cares or has helpful advice, my current system is made up of: Pro-Ject 1 Xpression III Classic turntable w/ Sumiko Pearl cart, Arcam A19 integrated amp w/ a pretty decent built in MM phono pre-amp and finally a pair of B&W 685 S2s... Feel like the next upgrades will be the cartridge (really like Ortofon 2M Bronze or Black), then a 8" B&W sub (Don't wanna overpower my bookshelfs)... Anyways, thanks again for the series and how lucky are we to be able to enjoy all this incredible music! Thanks

The 685 S2's are a VERY nice speaker-better than a lot of the higher end B&W's and blows away a lot of Martin Logan, Energy, Paradigm, etc bookshelf speakers. I'd say his system is comprised of very capable gear. Nothing like some dude on the internet crapping on other people for no reason.
I recenty upgraded my cart to the Ortofon black and wow.... sounds incredible. Also, got some black mamba interconnects. Honestly, I'm very pleased with the B&W's, I purchased a sub to give me a lil mmmfff. Loving my set-up, I'm in a place currently I don't want to upgrade. Eventually I'll probably purchase a nice phono pre-amp, but for the time being I'm just listenin to some jams. Peace and love gentlemen

Back in the late 70’s, I briefly sold high end audio equipment. It’s always fascinated me how some can be such audio perfectionists when our own ears are so imperfect. ‘Free country, do what you want, but I know my old ears aren’t good enough to justify such extravagance. A pair of restored Bose 901s with a nice old Pioneer SX-1050 receiver, (and an added Bluetooth adapter to allow digital music) are all I want.

One must experience a truly high-end audio system as this *in person* to know what it really can sound like!... And depending on the source audio quality, it can be just like an original, live, studio performance!

One simply cannot compare or "evaluate" any audio setup properly over the internet, while listening to the sound through a crappy laptop speaker system or on a cellphone, etc!... There is *no* comparison to actually being there yourself, in the same room as this system, (or any good setup), and hearing the *ACTUAL* *equipment* with your own ears, instead of just a *VIDEO* of the equipment playing!... *THAT* *major* difference is what so many people don't seem to comprehend anymore!... The internet is a great tool for many things, but when it comes to evaluating audio and video equipment performance *properly*, you absolutely *MUST* do that *in-person*, rather than trying to evaluate it by watching a video of it, regardless of the video's production quality!... Just the fact that it is a *recording* of the original performance, (of the equipment), means that the audio quality has already been considerably compromised!... Add to that the fact that most people that are watching these videos will be playing the sound back through their computer or cellphone speakers, and you just know that the resulting final audio quality that actually reaches your ears will be severely degraded even further, (over being there yourself), and so then hopefully you can see my point here... This isn't worth any further discussion time either, because of the simple fact that there is no comparison between a video of a performance and the actual performance itself right in front of you! (Again, I'm referring to equipment performance in this case.)

I watched Techmoan channels video about it, and he sayed it was almost like people being in the room etc. Hair in the back of the neck going up and that sort of stuff. I think it's like a 100dB of dynamic range, but nowdays you can get that in other medias out the box I think? (if the stuff is even recorded at that range) And pretty much no... last record made around -81. But that could be around Pink Floyd and stuff...

It’s so wonderful to be able to have the experience that soothe the soul and know your alive a a good tie in life. In your opinion, what would be the more commonly preferred size woofer for a speaker tower, but in consideration we are not music exerts but high enthusiast. Having 12x 12” subs is fine if you have two tweeter towers like you have. But having only two towers and one sub box, just for starters, what size woofers will give you a good balance of lows while delivering clarity? I know brands and manufacturers go a very long way in discussions but give us you tubers the short version of it lol ..

iagogonzalezalvarez now that’s the gospel I’ve been looking for. This whole premise is a load of crap. This rig would be quite nice, maybe, in a larger and acoustically dead room. Just the “source rack” alcove is an audio room no-no that cannot be overcome with off-axis cancellation or ANY other way. Not to mention that point source is the way for true hi-if. Arrays are only for steering audio. Very useful where needed. In a moderately sized ROOM, that many drivers will cause summing and cancelling(lobing and comb filtering) that would take another room full of individual driver processing beyond the scope of any reasonable resource to bring back the acoustic precision of point source. This is flash and trash. The preconceived notion can be very, very influential. I’ve seen and heard of outrageous installations in my region that make me sick at the witnessing of money almost literally thrown in the bin. All because of personal shortcomings? Phallic issues? I honestly wanted to ask the guy what vagina smelled like. Sad stuff.
