- The British Royal Family is a subject of attraction around the world. Millions of tourists flock to the UK and London all year round to visit the numerous historic locations associated with the monarchy. Their lives are consistently on display in the media, covered and speculated by national newspapers, and dramatised in TV adaptations like Netflix’s ‘The Crown’. Arguably, the most followed aspects of the Royal Family have been the love stories, the relationships, the tragedies, royal babies and marriages with the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, for example, peaking at a total of 36.7 million viewers. This infatuation with the Royals has been aided by the emergence of social media and the internet, however, it was present over half a century before, near the dawn of the late Queen’s reign. The story of Princess Margaret and Group Captain Peter Townsend is a heartbreaking tale of passion, longing and hardship. After meeting in 1947, the pair quickly grew fond of each other and soon found that their love was to be an almost impossible burden upon the princess’s life. Their relationship was confronted with many hurdles over the 8 years it spanned, facing backlash from the Houses of Parliament and the Church of England and required approval from the Queen - Margaret’s sister Elizabeth. Still, the couple’s love transcended royal agendas and what follows is the journey of how their romance grew and what ultimately concluded the royal love story, of Margaret and Peter…

if HRH Princess Margaret had been allowed to marry Group Captain Townsend, i better her life would have been better, but her mother and sister would not allow it.
She was allowed to marry but would have to give up royal perks. She chose the perks. She loved her royal allowance more than she loved Peter.
@@audreykennedy90 Yes ,also I find it strange that Camilla is a whore and a marrige wrecker ,yet Margaret wasnt . He was divorced ,ONLY when marriage was brought up ,not when their romance began.
Diana was hurt ,as she had every right to be ,but the fact that Camilla and Charles were forbidden ,in their youth played a huge part .I feel that was the bigger wrong .(I dont mean in the case of Diana ,"you cant marry that common cow ,you,ll marry this girl instead )
Margaret ,it seems wasnt a particularly nice person ,a party girl ,no harm in that ,as long as she was center of attention . She thought she was something she wasnt. She was common as dirt with a posh accent .Her sister on the other hand ,may have inherited her position by circumstance ,but by God ,she earned it.
There is certainly no evidence that her life would have been any different had she married Townsend, she was given a choice, step away from being princess or marry him, she wouldn't give up the luxurious life she so craved, she was pretty monstrous, entitled and demanding, much more like her mother then Elizabeth was

You dont know that for sure. You are specuIating. I dont think it would have worked. He was older than her, divorced and with children, and Margaret fell out of love easily
She should have married him she would have had a much happier life.
How do you know what their marriage would have looked like?
She wasnt that much in love with him to give up her Royal position. That's the truth.
@@usercarefree44 She paid the ultimate price for choosing her position that life didn't make her happy her privileged life was her downfall better to mary for love.
Princess Margaret was a beautiful woman.
She dumped him and a short time later, she was with another guy. P.M. liked her privileges.
Very interesting. Great work!!!
She could have married him but would have had to give up everything. She wasn’t willing to give up her royal life.
If they married she were be the happy woman ❤❤❤❤❤😢😢😢😢
Very good 👍 video, it’s really sad that Princess Margaret was treated so poorly, she was so in love with Peter and the establishment kept them apart and she was so hurt.. it’s sad that she was treated so badly by Tony, he only wanted to have a better life in the aristocratic era.
How ironic that they waited to register her birth to avoid bad luck and yet she had a very sad life. Elizabeth and her daughter Anne got to have the men they wanted. I think Margaret needed an older, steady person like Peter but ended up with Anthony, the social climbing playboy who never loved her and cheated on her even before their wedding. Later, he let her take the blame for the end of their marriage when he also had an extramarital relationship of his own. If I had been the queen, I would have made arrangements to give my only sister some of my own incredible wealth, secretly of course,so she could have the man she loved.
He was too old and married. He thinks he took advantage of a young teenager, Princess Margaret.
Peter was a married man remember.
@@Chuck0856 Not only that but his wife was so hurt when Peter spurned and rejected her that she turned to another man for comfort, which Peter then used as grounds for his divorce. The court also gave custody of her two sons to Peter, who then let her keep them. After the breakup with Margaret he took a position in Brussels and hardly ever saw them again. His older son felt bad for their mother, who took the brunt and didn’t complain to show loyalty to the Windsors.
If she truly loved him, nobody would have stood in her way of being with him.
Thank you. She couldn't live outside of the RF, the title, money, etc., so she picked the money/title over the man.
Yes she couldn't survive
@crystaldianestevens4553
Why was Peter unable to keep her as all husbands did in the 1950’s. No, she wanted money and titles and lived unhappily ever after.
Agreed, if she really had loved Townsend she would've given up all the privilege, rank, and money... Love makes one selfless but Margaret was selfish her "love" was definitely not true.
@SawChick249 she was a brat. Like Harry, she wanted it all on her terms.
Good thing Eluzabeth was the elder daughter. The monarchy would not have survived Margaret as Queen. Spoiled.
Yeah a female version of Harry.
Don't have the self discipline for the scarafice needed for the role.
"The pendulum has swung too far" re:H&M, lol! Love that, excellent bio

Most likely, she would have been happier if they married. But that would have been unfair to Peter. He had a full and happy life after her, despite her.
Lieutenant is pronounced Leftenant in the Uk.
Just ignore the fact that he was married and they were committing adultery.
PT -- the OG 'rolling stone'. That man still had the abulity to turn heads well into hus octegenarian yrs.
RIP to them both.
I suppose we can look at it as though in the end they finally had the chance to be together, without scrutiny or unkind comments from anyone.
How convenient that the pivot in allowing Margaret to marry came years after they had to wait? It's cute in movies and television for a couple to wait years upon years for one another, but how often does young love survive that, particularly when compounded by constant press attention and widespread disapproval? Of course she chose duty. She'd been worn down for over half a decade.
I also love how the propaganda of H&M had to be thrown in, no context whatsoever, right at the end. "Some people feel". Who, I wonder. Perhaps they're the original recipe racists who didn't want Harry to protect Megan from a similar fate to that which his mother suffered. Now whenever he returns home, he's paraded in the same lines as the pervert extraordinaire. But I guess they're equals in the eyes of "some people".
Why didn't the Queen
Tell Herty , no we don't
Think doughbag Mehgan is not right for you.
Why didn't someone from the Royal investigate the doughbag?????????

I think Peter was disgusting to try to get with Margaret. He just liked the young ones. I also think it was disrespectful of the King also
@@grammy965 I agree!
