There's a new interview with Dirty Loops and Rick Beatto on UA-cam. They list their influences! 😀

Ahhh, so you're a _jazz_ guy...
In _that_ case, and given the name of your channel, my next recommendation would be Dirty Loops ft. Cory Wong and the brass section formerly accompanying Prince, doing an ultra, ultra-smooth jazz instrumental called Ring of Saturn.
Cory Wong is a jazz and funk guitar player known for his impeccable support play and almost never taking the spotlight, but in that song he has one of the tastiest, most singing-like guitar solos I've ever heard.

Why don't you begin from the beginning? DL got known for their ability to rearrange (more chew it up and spit it out) hits like "Baby" J.Bieber, "Cirkus" B.Spears, "Rolling in the deep" Adele. Just to mention a couple. "Loopified" is their own album from back then, with originals and covers. Then you have; Rock you, World on fire, Breakdown, Next to you and in collaboration with Cory Wong, Thriller, Follow the light, Turbo, Rings of Saturn a.o. For a lesson in timing, check out Coffee Break is over. There's a ton of material to discover. Good luck!😁

In a recent interview with Rick Beato Jonah mentioned Brad Mehldau as one of his major influences. Also, he is actually rooted in classical music, classical piano as well as choirs. You can hear that in some parts of his soloing here.

You nailed it with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett as major Jonah Nielsen influences.

Forgot Lile Mays and Pat Metheny... actually the chord sequence on this song it's Lyle.

We now have the definitive answer from Jonah, he says that it's Lyle Mays as his greatest influence in the new interview with Rick Beatto.

As a Swede I also want to mention the harmonies of Swedish folktune and the Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson. If interested, check out "Jazz på svenska." I KNOW he has been influenced by him, because you can´t find any Swedish musician who isn´t. Also Jan Lundgren, another jazz pianist may have influenced him. Well, threre are more of them, Jan Johansson created a complete genre of folklore-influenced piano jazz. You can also hear it in the intro to ABBA´s Wembley-concert, google "ABBA" and "Gammal fäbodpsalm" or "Wembly", "intro" and "Voulez-Vous".

Yes, they always get you in the end. They are so good, their compositions, their mood, all so good! Really good to see you now liking what you hear! Good job staying with it!
I think they are still a niche band, unknown to the grand public, even in Sweden, their home country. Still, they play for full houses, at least in some places, with enthusiastic crowds, on their current tour de USA.
Maybe a bit of their Cory Wong collaboration next, like Ring of Saturn (much of Cory, super smooth, instrumental), Turbo (also instrumental, great horns!), or the most liked song from the collab, Follow the light (more of DL here, Henrik showing of a bit, don't miss the Grace Kelly stank face in the corner at the end of Henrik's solo).

Lyle Mays from Pat Metheny group is his main influence for playing piano that way

“WSO” was the first DL track I ever heard… and I was impressed immediately. I have since listened to many tracks. I have a couple I’d recommend:
“Thriller” and “Turbo” DL did with the Cory Wong band.
By the way, have you heard of a guitarist named Matteo Mancuso? Or a multi-instrumentalist named Jacob Collier? Or a group named Snarky Puppy?

Hey Brian, thanks for sticking with Dirty Loops and giving this one a listen. I feel that in ‘Run Away’, its more about a rock, pop and shred parody, whereas these songs from their 2021 or so-album Phoenix are what completely turned me on to DL. Yeah, they know how to draw you in to their music, absolutely.
The Latin feel might have to do with some of the background percussion instruments being of Latin music origin, one of them the berimbau which is on a loop throughout.
And yeah, the musical influences of the three of them range from rock to pop to RnB to old school jazzers like Oscar Peterson, to classical/romantic composers like Rachmaninov etc.., basically everything these guys listened to growing up.
How they’ve absorbed it tho, and what they’ve done with it, is so unique. Add to this a crazy level of musicianship and instrumental/vocal skills, and you have Dirty Loops.
Henrik is rewriting the rules for bassplaying, partially inspired by Aron (drums), who not only plays like a beast, but also co-writes many of their tunes, including writing many of Henrik’s bass lines (some fiendishly difficult, -and then insists on Henrik somehow making them work!)
Other DLoops tracks feature designated Henrik bass solos, such as “World On Fire”, “Follow The Light”, “Turbo” and many of their earlier covers and songs from 2014. All completely mindblowing.🔥🔥🔥
    Enjoy!
Looking forward to your next Dirty Loops instalments! 🙏☺️👍

They are impressive, different and versatile in their musicality - i just appreciate them so much and wish they were as well known, to a wider audience, as any of the autotune copy of another copy artist the companies churn out..
Perhaps your next foray should be "Follow the Light" or "Thriller" with Corey Wong - another orgy of music and sheer joy

...and for a show of more diversity there´s also sideproject with Aron and Henrik (Songs for lovers) and "Bitten by The Kitten"- a very different song/video - since their singer was off doing "Coffee Break" on his own , also great song, and great band/bassplayer Richard Bona
Another offshoot for Henrik was the song "U.T.F.F" - with Jack and Owane - also very worth checking out !

All their music is spectacular. Maybe check out their song Breakdown. You'll hear a band on top of their game doing a song full of subtleties, interesting harmonies and a vocal that will go straight to your heart. Highly recommended.

I’m glad you didn’t give up on them after Run Away. This is more of what made them great.
The way they layer songs is spectacular.
I just saw them live for the first time last Saturday (I’d seen Henrik at NAMM back in 2022 but this was the first time seeing them together (their first US Tour in 10 years).
I think you’ll enjoy Hit Me, Rolling in the Deep and even their version of Justin Bieber’s Rollercoaster.
Here’s a link to one of the videos I posted from that show

These boys are in it for the music and definitely not for the drugs, as Sex Pistols claimed to be... I´ll pass on an anecdote I picked up in another commentary field: They were filmed during touring in the States, and on one occation someone where putting 12 bear cans into the fridge. One of the boys from the band allegedly commented: "Why so many bears, there are just 8 of us in the bus!" The dream of a mother-in-law I guess. 😄Well-behaved kids. Focused musicians.

Glad you gave them another shot - they have a lot of at the same time very different songs but also always very "Dirty Loops". If you want to hear Henrik doing a nice bass solo try "World on fire" and some really funky instrumental jazz would be "Turbo" from their collaboration with Cory Wong. Jonah is also influenced by classical music like Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and John Rutter which you also hear in his solo. And that's exactly what they do! They blend all their influences in their songs and the result is amazing! :-) Henrik has mentioned Flea and Gary Willis as big influences, Aron has mentioned Toto among others...

Others can provide more detail than me. They've all studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Henrik (bass) and Aaron (drums) focused on jazz, whereas Jonah (keys & singing) is classically trained - which shows. They're currently on tour in the US. Also have a look at who their manager is at the end of the credits.
Simon Petrén typically does all their mastering. He's a good musician himself and sometimes play with them on their live performances. The crispness and sound quality of the productions he's involved in are not short of fantastic. Here's his own YT channel: ua-cam.com/users/simonpetren
For some time he's been working on K-pop in Korea and here's an example of his abilities: ua-cam.com/video/JNDR64IzvEs/v-deo.htmlsi=-Q966N2uNJn_sJdb

Glad you didn´t give up on them! Saw them live almost 2 years ago, so much fun, found out about them almost four years ago with a suggestion on FB and it was the side project Songs For Lovers, and the song Bitten By The Kitten. 🤯mindblown! Then I learned they were from my country of Sweden! Surprise!
If you are interested in more type of fusion you maybe want to check out Valeriy Stepanov. A multimusician, mainly keys but can play almost everything. There is a live footage of him playing drums and keys at the same time!! But the song I suggest is On The Stork´s Wings featuring Alex Hutchings on guitar and Marcus Thomas on drums.
Please consider it! You might like it. 😎

You should definitely go back and have a look at something like their cover of cheesy songs like 'Baby'! Then listen to something from their first album. The bassline alone on 'The Way She Walks' is a modern pop miracle in its own right.

8:10 From a fusion point of view, this is heavily influenced by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays (The Pat Metheny Group). The keyboard solo uses a lot of Lyle's piano phrasing. The percussion and climax phrases are an appreciative reference to Pat Metheny's Secret Story album (track "Finding and Believing").

It is always amazing watching "whatever" reacting to "whatever" and they have their opinion off course. But it is like pure comedy to me. Are they aware of anything at all regarding music? And they have some sort of livelihood being an "reactor" to true musicianship? This earth is going down fast...
