    I’ve watched so many of Shawn’s videos, but have just seen this particular video now.
    Tried this at the range, and oh wow, a game changer for me.
    No early hip extension, no more coming over the top.
    Very simple swing thought to have, too.
    Perhaps the most helpful of all his videos, and that’s saying something.
    Thanks a lot Shawn.

      It is a very cool move; engages the kinetic chain very nicely. Thank you for your feedback! Complementary shots to practice to get this move more natural is the uphill shot and the ball below the feet shot. Of course I have videos gor those! 😝😝

    Awesome observation!! Yes it is and this helps counter balance the centrifugal pull of the arms swinging in front of the body; the mirror drill is to expand of the chair drill you have seen with other teachers; this drill is great for golfers who need to make some room in front of them through impact; see "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" and "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 as an expansion to this video; Great comment and very astute observation once again; thanks! This is a fantastic video on leg action during the swing. I currently play of 3 and have been changing my swing this winter based on the way hogan swung the club. The one part of his swing that ive found the most difficult was his leg action, im just back from the range and have already found tremendous improvement in my ball striking and I really feel like ive finally got all the pieces. Thank you so much for creating such a simple way of demonstrating the correct leg action in the swing!

    Shawn, this is the best golf video/teaching method I've ever seen. This should be widely taught after grip, alignment, and posture as the first dynamic portion of the swing. Great job.

    This video has helped me more than any other video. ( And the 2 Pro instructors I paid) I was leading my downswing with the right hip moving out toward the ball,causing me to stand up losing spine angle. Resulting in high right shots,club getting stuck behind me causing the right hand to take over and the left wrist to cup at impact. Within two days I was playing my best golf in a long time. Thanks Shawn! I'm enjoying golf again.

    Hey skwon; mats are ok since you can always feel whether or not you hit the mat before the ball; it also prevents you from getting too steep on the ball; I used to take very deep divots and after hitting on mats for a couple winters, it allowed me to shallow out the swing and has never hampered my on course performances; rock on! I can't believe I discovered this video only now. I used to lose my position with the right hip and spin out. This removed a lot of confusion I had with how the lower body is supposed to start the downswing and how the head is supposed to stat back. Great analogy of the right hanky wiping the glass, then the left hanky connecting and wiping through. I tell you I hit my drives better, farther and, more importantly, more consistent today than I ever did. Thanks and more power! Ian, Philippines.

    Great lesson. I have read the Hogan book cover to cover at least 100 times. I have read countless golf articles and taken numerous lessons on initiating the downswing with the turning of the hips. I was told what to do but not how to do it. Your advice to keep the right hip in place and then connect and turn the left hip, finally unlocked the mystery. You're the best!!!!

    Wow this tip is fantastic! Before using this tip I was suffering from cronic push shots with my irons. Well I tried this tip out for about 15mins before I tee'd off on my home practice fairway and it totally eliminated my probelm. I went through the entire round without hitting a single push shot and starting hitting alot straighter and more consistantly! Thanks a heap for the great tip, keep up the good work Shawn!

    This is the single best golf tip and or explanation I have ever seen. For years I have struggled with my swing thinking it was everything else but my pivot.What I was doing was starting down with my hips but just turning my right hip back to the target which in turn pulled my right back pocket away from the glass/mirror causing my weight to go on to my toes and change my body angles. Thanks to you Shawn explaining it so clearly I pretty much flush every shot now.

    Yes! Very good! Downswing weightshift is the evolution of the hogan power move and drill and the final video of this year, "2008 Golf swing review", has the rest of the info;
    Shawn

  • @golflessons
    @golflessons  17 років тому

    Yes!! If you look very carefully, most of the lateral move is in the backswing; then when the right side holds it's position through leverage, it squeezes you into the left side for a solid brace that will allow you to compress the snot out of the ball! Hogan's move was 40% in the backswing and 60% in the downswing; Jones was more like mine at 65% to 35% and Moe Norman moved the same way as well!

    The best drill for backswing is feet together; the best drill for downswing through ball is one leg drill; the best drill for putting it together is the perpetual motion drill together with the "downswing weightshift" video; then after a few weeks of repetition with some perseverance and patience you will have a move that will be fluid, powerful and centered. My DVD is the best way to go as it gives you all the important components in priority with training drills...

    Hello Cuthbielad and thanks for your comment!
    Bobby Jones had it when he talked about his students NOT TURNING THEIR HIPS ENOUGH IN THE BACKSWING. Hogan used to have a fast swing and fast tempo so his hands and arms were a bit ahead of the body going back...500 characters is not nearly enough though; you will need to watch a few more of my vids from the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website and also check the last post on my testimonials page on Hogan; Shawn

    Hi Shawn,
    Great Video, only just in the last month figured out about keeping my head behind the ball. Years of frustration and lack of progress, plus hurting my lower back are finally coming to an end. Just to let you know, your vid's have been a tremendous help. Not shooting the scores I want at mo' but feel now it's just a matter of time now. Finally hitting the ball like I am capable of, with even more power, less effort, less strain on my lower back, and with MORE CONSISTENCY.
    Thanks.

    For years i`ve been told to " rotate " my hips, which has only caused me to struggle with standing up during the swing with the right hip moving towards the ball. This instruction has changed my golf swing forever for the better in many ways -- even my balance. I might just add though that just by moving my left "butt" straight BACK ( away from the ball ) at the transition, seemed enough.
    Thanks so much Shawn. Rod, from Sydney Australia.

    Yes you do spin the hips (to be exact, the left hip)....BUT, you have to keep the right hip in place (back) at the top of the backswing while you turn the left hip to the left (keeping your head behind the ball). OMG....absolutely brilliant Shawn!Something that was not quite clear in Hogan's book that Shawn has so expertly expained.

    Hi and thanks for your comment! I agree with your statement; this was more in response to swing analysis from other teachers stating the turn of the hips as the start...You did notice the leverage aspect causing the bump to the left right? This is what is critical to NOT spinning out. My "Swing Sequence" and "Sequence Power Drills" videos are right along the lines you are talking about.

    Great question!
    This video is meant for you to get the feel awareness of a centered turn and of holding your ground in the downswing to force the left side back and out of the way; it does not do a 100% complete job and this is why I have "Downswing Weightshift" and "2008 Golf swing review part 1 and 2", "Perpetual Motion drill" and finally "Tempo and Timing update" for putting a rhythm into the swing so you forget to try to hit the positions...Trying fails! Awareness Cures! Shawn

    This is incredible. This shows me all the "secrets" about me using my arms so much in my swing. I'm 15 years old and I'm a 2 handicap. I've always played off feel and swinging with my arms was natural. I could never make a hip turn because I never had the correct concept, and with this, I am making perfect tempo and not using my arms. Im hitting the fairways and greens so much more and now I don't always have to rely on short game to save me!

    Good question;
    It is the right side holding the leverage that allows the left side to find it's way back under you to support the downswing and follow through; so I would have to say through the ball; have a look at the "Analyze your own swing" part 1 and 2 where I show the down the line angle with a line on the backside for best analysis...you will find it on the " you tube shawn" page of my website;

    Shawn, Excellent video! Your analysis implies an interesting result: a lot of the perceived lateral motion towards the target occurs after a fixed reference point (the right back pocket) has already been established at the transition. The lateral motion is a side effect of keeping the right pocket in contact with the mirror. In this way, it forces the move through to combine both rotation with a lateral move in one motion.

    Hi Ed and thanks for the comment!
    Indeed, I advocate boiling it down to even more simplicity than that; the term I use when teaching is "Effortless, powerful momentum through the "ball-turf" and towards the target" and for more advanced players simply through to target with effortless and powerful momentum. This video is to understand and feel some of the essential parts of the swing as a stepping stone...

    Hey Shawn, I saw this video a long time ago, but kind of glossed over it, and as I watch it today, it addressed my biggest problem in golf. For years I’ve had that image in my head of Hogan with the band around his left hip. Not realizing my right hip going with it. This just might solve my over the top.

    Wow Shawn, you have done the best job ever of explaining the correct movement of the hips at the start of the downswing! I am amazed at how much better my swing works just by focusing on keeping that right butt cheek from moving back to the right at the start of the downswing. There are some very subtle points in this video that could easily be missed. I have done the butt to the wall drill before, but always incorrectly, by rotating back and forth around the base of my spine, but now I know the correct action the results are seemingly magic. Thanks for an awesome video!

    Shawn, I think this is the key the I have been looking for for years. Looking back at my swing, I see that I was/am too right side dominant. I was rotating my right hip in instead of left hip back to initiate the downswing. Needless to say, lots of hosel shots resulted from this. Its like the left hip going back is my trigger. Everything else just happens on its own if I return that left hip "back to the wall". I was even toeing some shots which I NEVER do! Thanks so much for this.

    1tontomato is right on; especially after Hogan's accident that had his pelvis and legs badly broken, he used the right side as leverage to pull himself into the left side which is a visual illusion of firing off the right; all you need to do is look at the separation of the knees in the downswing...if he were pushing with the right the knees would be close together instead of getting wider like Sam Snead and Moe Norman...
    Shawn

  • @golflessons
    @golflessons  17 років тому

    40 to 45 degrees is a very good number; the key is to get that separation on the downswing when the hips start to clear so you get that Catapult effect through the ball and not early at the ball;
    Great question; but you might want to consider what Snead, Jones and Nicklaus did and that was to turn the whole body back and get the coil when they squated into the left heel to plant in as the first move in the downswing...

  • @cuthbielad
    @cuthbielad 17 років тому

    Thanks Shawn. That gives me some food for thought. My hands and arms tend to get a bit stuck behind me but you could consider my tempo to be quick too. I just watched a video of Woody Austen, his back swing is like treacle but his hip turn isnt that pronounced either. I guess there is more than one way of achieving the same objective which is to get the ball flying down the middle. I cant wait to get to the range later to see what happens..

    @kb8228 It is one or the other; which ever feel better to you as they come to the same end result; you also want to see "create serious speed; shawn clement", "feet together and one leg update; shawn clement" and "horse shoes and lassos; shawn clement" to feel the rhythm and timing of these moves; you will understand what I mean when you see the videos! All the best; Shawn
    PS; feel free to ask these kinds of questions in my forum; we have a great bunch of people there to help!

    Have a look at my "downswing Weightshift" video as well as the "timing and tempo update" and the "bilateral golf swing" videos...Get yourself braced solidly before you swing the arms through the ball and to the target (and not at the ball right?)

    Have a look at "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" video and perfect the feel of this drill; then have a look at "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 as well as "golf pro lesson hooks and slices" and you will get it all back; Shawn

    There is a bit of long iron in the Hybrid Video...you could take a look at that for now...:)
    Thanks for the feedback and keep it up!

    @eddiebutt1 Here we go, great question eddiebutt! You want to feel that you are using the glutes and the quads to squat in the downswing as a preparation to releasing the arm-club unit to the target; see my "Throwing the club; Shawn Clement" video for starters and then see "Create serious speed", "Feet together and one leg update" and "Hogan Power Drill Update" Shawn

    This has made a lot of difference to my concept of the hip motion. I have been trying to stop sliding and making more rotation in my swing for months but never found a swing thought or movement that didn't make me loose posture.
    The part I found most helpful was leaving the right hip back and turning the left instead of rotating both like it looks in swing videos.
    When I tried it I found more room to swing through, like you said and shallower shaft for better dynamic lie and shallower divots.
    I will continue to practice this feeling. Thanks Shawn.

      Very good! Combine this with the "uphill shot shawn clement" and "stop swaying shawn clement", "lower body in the backswing shawn clement" and then see these oldies but goodies, "arms and body timing shawn clement" and "feet together drill shawn clement"

    Don't worry about this; the main thing is to get the momentum going towards the target and to not be in the way!! See the response I have below "Crimn";
    Thanks for the question! Shawn

    Make sure you keep focused on the target! If you default to the ball, you will deliver the juice to the ground instead of the target! See "golf pro lesson eye ball" and "golf pro lesson how to repeat your practice swing" ; Thanks for the question! Shawn

    grixxly, first look at Bubba Watsons Swing. his hip turn is enourmous.
    I am on the other side of the learning hump with this new swing. What was astonishing and down right startling was that when I started to get this totally in sync, I would swing effortlessly and simply crush the ball. It was so startling that I almost jumped out of my shoes the first few times that happened since my brain could not compute such an effortless swing and the loud crack of impact.

    best description yet of Hogan wt shift...a lot of people describe as reverse wt shift, etc. (incorrectly)....I guess I would just define this a "proper" wt. shift and not just a power move.....for me the best way to feel this is to EXAGGERATE the feel of this and you really feel the torque of this - especially with driver - I'm 5'9" 155 and I'm hitting it past guys 6'2"...TRY IT!

    Hogan, Woods, Els and others make their bread and butter shot the fade...they practice fades and draws on a regular basis...The arms AND club hang from the shoulders AND rest on the arm pits up against the upper chest. Watch "Golf Pro Lesson Takeaway", "Golf Pro Lesson On The Slopes" (For the ball below the feet segment) and "Golf Pro Lesson Hooks and Slices" (For the fade segment) and it will fall into place; Shawn

    Hi Shawn great stuff again. A pro recently corrected my posture. My spine angle was too upright but its now a lot better. This however has resulted in me hitting shanks...

    I was one of the orginal cast members of the Big Break,,,this is the best lower body action ever....now I use to do this without understand its purpose...but after taking a golf lesson for a respected instructor, i was taught to turn my right hip towards the ball my game got worse..now I know that person didn't know the hinge action of the #4 PA and the relationship with the flying wedges....with your piviot action which is a natural move for me, my ballstriking has soared. (putting thats easy)
