This is the kind of song that when i'm driving home from work, i hear it on the radio, and put it super loud en sing along and air bass to. It gets me so excited!
In the early '90s, I left my first one standing outside my house door when leaving for a travel... never found it back of course. That's when eBay came on and I found myself buying a complete Sabre harem to compensate for the loss :). They still appear on eBay sometimes, but am not sure what the current value of a good '79 would be.... $2-2500 ? I wanted a Sabre because I thought Bernard Edwards played one on TV when I was a youngster, but probably he only had Stingrays. The two pickup Sabre has lots more tonal possibilities, so I stayed with them, for over 20 years, until I picked up Baby Bass and salsa music about 10 years ago.
My music teacher always told us to bring session players an idea as to what you want in terms of tone and overall musical feel. This is a perfect example of how I want the bass to sound on my records. Nice and smooth, with an emphasis on the groove!
This is terrific. Im a Bass player myself and Leon's basslines were the GREATE4ST. People used to talk about Louis Johnson who was a great bass player in his own right but Leons bass lines were unmatched.....
Wow, a twin-pickup Sabre with active electronics. Never played one, never even thought about it, but now I'm going to get one to try it out. Who knows, it could be "A Love Thing"-LOL
Masterful! Not only that your playing is definitely top-drawer, but your choice of pieces with which you treat us is also impeccable. Nowadays there is so much overplaying and groove-lacking bass "noise" that digging up truly musical pieces, especially when they come with a bass-line such as this comes as a true remedy for my aching ears (and heart).
