I want to add my praise to the many other well deserved compliments. I have always loved this Chic song the most of all their many songs. Why? Because of that magnificent bass line. I can't explain it, but to my ear there is just something so supreme and special about Bernard's work on this song. And to hear you play it so beautifully, with such obvious respect and appreciation for Bernard, it is a real joy - just wonderful to see and hear. Thank you very much.
Daaaaarrrrllling,....you are on the CHIC FREQUENCY..... BRAVO .....play this at ANY AUDITION.... and walk out with gig...IN YOUR BACK POCKET....YOU KILLED IT !!!!!
Thx, it took about 20-30 yrs of immersion in his style. By the way, if you listen to B.E.'s isolated bass tracks, they are surprisingly staccato, yes, much more than I could deduce form the original songs.
@@BelgaBass Definitly. Listened to them many times. Sometimes I wonder if he might have used the mutes of the stingray on some songs. I think on Good Times it really sounds like that.
Having missed Nile in Liverpool last week and just watching him on radio 2, i was looking up this song on you tube and came across this. Im in awe. I dont play but love listening to the bass on all stuff but this is a major fave of mine. You are wow! Marry me ha ha!!!
It's Bernards and Louis's fault that around '79 I fell eternally for the basses with one tuning key on the bottom... have played them since I could afford them (around 30yrs now)
Well your a play dam fine bass sir,in my humble opinion; I've just pulled my fender jazz bass out of the case this last few weeks (first time in 15 years). My 14yo daughter wants to learn bass. I also got the itch to play again lately and improve so I have just landed upon a fine teacher for us both. Met two lady singers who are into doing Chic/Diana Ross/ Stevie Wonder, by the way, So voila.. Finding you while researching- thanks
Well it's really nice that I've unknowingly inspired someone to pick up his instrument again after so many years, which is by itself a shame, but I myself also have periods that I hardly play, occupied by other tasks and responsabilities. Never give it up completely ! And kudos to your daughter.
Hi ! I'm very impressed by your playing of this great song :) I love Chic, and you play really like B Edwards which is great. I love your sound and I was wondering what bass were you using ? And how did you recorded this video ? From an amp ? or directly into an interface ? I'd be very pleased if I could have feedback from you because i'm very happy i found your video since I loved it :) Keep it up :) Bye
Hello and thank you for the compliments ! I do it out of love for Chic music and for B Edwards mastership. This is a Music Man Sabre '79 with old flat wound strings, with only the bridge pickup switched on. Bernard presumably played a Music Man Stingray, which has only the bridge pickup. Sabre and Stingray do not sound 100% identical, but the basic similarity is there. I plug my bass into an old Boss mixer to adjust the volume and sometimes bass and/or treble, and then this mixer goes to the MIC IN of my laptop... as simple and pure as that :). On the bass I may have modifed the active EQ (bass and treble) but this is one of my first Chic playalongs, and in the beginning I usually left the EQ just in the middle. In more recent playalongs I have sometimes modified bass and treble more extensively, to approach the original recorded sound as good as possible.
BelgaBass Hello ! First of all, thanks for your anwser, that's a very nice bass, I did not not know the sound of the Sabre so far, not as much compared to the classic characteristic Stingray sound which is more common and more recognizable. Since your bass has 2 pick-ups (like on the Stingray HH) and you play with only one pick up, do you think it is possible to get the sound of your Sabre (or close to) on a Stringray (H model with only one pick-up) ? When you say B.Edwars played with a bass with one pickup do you mean one pick-up or 2 pick ups with only one activated like on your sabre. I also find your sound to have less treble than the usual Stingray one. I heard that B.Edwards used to play on one (or many) stingrays but I'm suprised how close to the original sound you came with the Sabre ! the roundess and punch is there without the metallic sound of some of the stingray that i can hear on many videos (in my personal taste). I think the fact you used old strings has its importance there too :) And definitely, the bass sound is really punchy and creamy on his own and it's amazing it is not recorded through an amp. I'd be pleased to see you play another cover of Chic on youtube !
An Koop Well, I've posted lots of Chic covers, so you'll probably find some more you like among my videos. Thanks honestly for appreciating how close my sound gets to the original ! I find this a very important feature. Tonotice this, you must have been listening and studying bass sounds very closely yourself. I've been looking for information on exactly what basses Bernard played, but it's all quite confusing. He used to do playbacks on BC Rich Eagle and even on a Precision, whereas the original song clearly is a Music Man. I've never seen a picture of him playing a 2-pickup Sabre, so I just assume that all the recordings on the albums Chic, C'est Chic and Risqué with a clearly identifiable MM sound were Stingrays (I wish Nile Rodgers could shed some light on this for us, poor bass players that are being kept in the dark...). And most certainly B played flatwound strings. That's why my dark brown Sabre with the flatwounds comes so close to the original sound. Your question about getting the sound of a Sabre (one pickup) out of a Stingray (H) : of course. The neck pickup is positioned roughly on the same spot. But you could measure this and compare it to a Sabre. A few millimeters already can make a difference. I actually never had a Stingray because the tonal possibilities are quite limited compared to a Sabre, although you get the trademark Stingray sound.
BelgaBass I do need to point out that I am totally unfamiliar with the revival line of Sabre basses that EB has just come out with, and also of all the EB Stingrays flavors. For me Music Man ended when Leo sold it to EB, and the only real Music Man basses are from '76 until roughly '80, as far as I am concerned. I don't like modern basses at all, they have no character, although I do have a quite recent 5-string because it was required for a style I used to play a few years back.
BelgaBass Thanks for your complete answer. Very interesting, and I must say it's always a pleasure to share info with a fan of Chic and B.Edwards. I also think the way you play is where the sound comes from initially and I'm really admirative of how you make the song groove so much on such a long song (+ 6min), since I know how hard it is to make it groove and keep the rythm on a long distance. Really great skills ! the best chic cover i've seen around by far :) Have a nice day.
Hey mate --as usual you’re grooving again, that Sabre has my place trembling I can’t wait till I get better until than I’ll keep practicing and just to let you know I put an order in for a Sabre.
:) they will only come on sale the day I pass. But just go on Ebay and buy any '79 Sabre that has no technical issues, and you'll have exactly the same...
+Sebastián Tori (Flor de Trío) Seems to be Daddario flat strings 40-95... Same I have on my MusicMan to have this particular tone (Change, and Narada TM's basslines too).
Thanks ! Yes, old flat strings, brand unknown. Unfortunately some of them broke since this recording and had to be replaced, and now the bass does not sound the same anymore :(
Fantastic tone and skill, sir! Do you have the foam mutes on in this recording? I can't really tell by looking at the bridge since there are no close-up shots of it.
Hello, no, the mutes are still there but they've almost entirely disintegrated after 34yrs (bass is a '79), so they would be of no use anyway. This is just the plain unmodified grainy sound of the flatwound strings and bridge pickup. Should have EQ'd in a bit more bass on retrospect, sounds quite nasal now. (I doubt Bernard would have used the mutes)
To be honest: I have no idea :). They are gold colored, wrapped with blue cloth on the neck end, and more than 10 years old. Although I changed the D because it snapped last year, replaced it with a "D'addario XL Chromes .065 warm/mellow flat wound". This string sounde a bit brighter for a while, but now it's come down to the same mellowness as the older ones. I am not really into gear to be honest. I'll buy what the music shop a few blocks away has in store at that moment...
Thanks for enjoying. But tabs, tabs...??? Who needs tabs ? I play all this by ear :). You can't possibly capture the nuances of B.E.'s playing style on paper...
Well he did it justice yeah bernard would be proud but he did miss the crucial riff that Bernard put his stamp on but this cats real good kudos to him for being cool
