And the Beat Goes On - The Whispers (1979) - bass

  • Played on a vintage MM Sabre '79, direct into mixing console, minimal EQ, than into pc. No compression, exciters, limiters or any other pre- or post- signal processing.
    Note: this is not a standard Sabre sound. This particular bass's phase switch has been customized by a previous owner and presumably does something with single-coil as well, resulting in this excentric nasal sound. Not exactly like the Rickenbacker on the original but darn close.

    In the 70s and 80s we had so many fantastic bass lines in our pop music. We just don’t have bass lines this good any more! Modern pop bass lines are often soulless synths. It’s a pleasure to hear you play this fantastic bass line with so much soul. Awesome job! 👍

      That is exactly why I stopped actively listening to new pop music since ... the early 90's ? Now and then an inspirational bass line pops up, in some totally unexspected song or style. Everything nowadays is technique and gear. Even the early '90s genuine sounding basslines in early Jamiroquai and the acid jazz scene (BNH, Incognito...) are... like coffee filtered through an already used filter...
      In the 70's and 80's who thought about technique ? My guess: not B.E., not V.W., not L.J, not L.G., maybe S.C. and a bit later M.M.

    Dude. I just found your channel today after being reminded of Chic by my dad (I'm 28, if that makes a difference) and looking for "Everybody Dance" covers. Looked at your vid with the working out the chucking technique and I stumbled on all the rest of your vids. Your whole channel is like my playlist of songs that I want to learn. It's almost eerily coincidental. lol
    I don't know if you're still making vids, but I just wanted to tell you that every single cover is dead on. You're gonna help me bridge a lot of gaps where my ears can't hear and save me a lot of time, and I thank you for that.

    • @BelgaBass
      @BelgaBass  4 роки тому

      You are exactly the kind of audience I wanted to reach :) - educationwise. I'm 30yrs older, so probably your dad - being probably around my age - can confer that I have my roots in that era. It is interesting to see younger people (who did not live that era) are picking up this style and those songs, and properly appreciating it. The songs I did in the videos are all 100+ songs that apparently have influenced me most during my "formation" years when I was 20->your age. So ... If you master about 80-90 of my list (except for the salsa songs, which was a totally different side trajectoy in my live career), you will - I guess - have picked up the correct idiom of this style.

    • @BelgaBass
      @BelgaBass  Рік тому +1

      Well, it's not my tone actually. It's the basses... this Sabre has had some modification in the circuitry by a previous owner (phase switch), and I think it puts the pickup in single coil mode (3 different combinations, never could figure out what it does exactly) and I took thatof those modified tones which sounded the most alike as the original. And of course, finger control, a touch of plucking with the right hand, which makes it sound ever more accentuated. That part is me :).

      @@IndigoBass Way to go ! Unfortunately I am only on YT and then even only sporadically, just for reading comments when I have nothing else at hand... music nowadays is not a big part of my activities or intrests anymore...
      Actually the only thing that I am curious about is if this undercurrent of younger musicians like yourself that tap into the older music will not relent and keep on existing and exploring that older music that I saw shaping all modern styles back in the '70s. So hearing about someone like you somehow appeases any doubts I have about that. :)

      Thx... that was exactly the intention :).
      You wonder, when playing it so sharp, how can this be bass ? Bass was not meant to be interpreted that way, it has to be a carrying, supporting foundation... long notes, fluently. Nope... even when played sharp as needles, it works, esp. in this style of that era.

    Fantastic tone; what's your set up?

    • @BelgaBass
      @BelgaBass  10 років тому +3

      Hi, glad you like the sound, so do I. Some previous owner apparently had the phase switch modified on this Sabre. I'm not sure what is does, presumably in each of the 2 settings it changes the polarity of just one humbucker instead of both, so there are 2 different phase settings and sounds that are fuller now instead of the one thin sound on Sabres with a standard phase switch. I'm playing using the one that gave the closest match to the original bass sound on the record. And of course, flatwound strings, and some bass/treble EQ. No compression etc.

      No sure, can't remember... but I think yes. Edit (2022): sure as hell were flatwounds !! How could I forget this myself. Since +/- 10 yrs I have been hooked on flats again. They bring out such a totally more grounded sound out of a bass.
