  • Welcome to my UA-cam Channel!
    Today I’m talking about all the things I hate about Sex and the City! I cover Carrie's relationship troubles, Charlotte's unrealistic ideas of marriage, Miranda's bad attitude and Samantha...well just being Samantha. If you like watching me talk about tv shows and all things pop culture, do me a solid and drop a like on this video. Tell me in the comments what SATC character you are?!?!

    What is really incredible is how Carrie, as the main character, does not grow or evolve AT ALL throughout the series. If you took her from the second SATC (don't even get me started on what a dumpster fire that was) and compared her to Carrie from Season 1 - same person...in fact she might even be worse. I am not including her in AJLT, because I did not feel like I needed to watch it, but it seems like she didn't really change much, or again, got worse. She is perpetually selfish and doesn't learn anything from any of the things she has been through or from anyone around her. The older I got the more I noticed all the problems you mentioned. Great video. I still watch for nostalgia, but with more realistic glasses.

    I feel you on miranda. It's actually kinda scary, the thought that as our society becomes more and more about approval or "the like" that being called a Miranda (mirrors, truth tellers) could carry even more of a negative conatation in the future when the exact opposite should happen. Cynthia Nixon nailed this role, would love to see her on broadway.

    Sleigh ride into gay town? What the fuck does that even mean? It doesn’t matter really, because what she actually said was “layover on the way to gay town” - which as a phrase makes sense & is definitely an idea I’ve heard expressed a lot. The ‘bisexuals are attracted to literally every person on earth,’ idea, as evidenced by Carrie seeming to be jealous of everyone, is also something I’ve heard way too many times. 😕

    so good to hear someone say "I liked the show, it did so much right/it was a product of its time but there are things that are problematic" instead of just being upset about how awful these things are.
    Also, it's so funny, the same thing happened to me with the second movie. Completely forgot everything (even the Dubai part, I thought it was Morocco). Then I stumbled upon Roger Ebert's review of it :D (and yes, that review, too, is maybe a bit sexist and of its time...)

    • @rosiebarros8513
      @rosiebarros8513 2 роки тому

      It’s only problematic cuz…fast forward to ‘now’ and we’re living in this altered reality of more than two genders. It was the norm in1998 for the characters to have their point of view that they did. Why do we all have to be held hostage by the woke nonsense? Should all of mankind now reject the past and our logical beliefs? That would mean that my childhood needs to be erased and rewritten.

    I was always kind of conflicted about the apartment buying/engagement ring thing because I totally agree Charlotte shouldn’t have to give Carrie money (duh), but I did think it was sad that Charlotte was just kind of like “oh well sucks to be you” about it. I don’t recall her offering solutions or to help in any capacity. They’re both in the right; Charlotte can refuse to financially help a friend, and Carrie can be upset that her friend just dismissed her problems. (At least I read it as Carrie not being upset Charlotte didn’t offer money per say (even though it manifested like so), but that Charlotte didn’t offer any kind of help)

    2. Samantha

    4. Carrie
    I can’t stand Carrie upon my rewatch as an adult. I find Carrie after mid season 2 to be almost unbearably frustrating. Her relationship with Big was doomed from the start but she kept beating that dead horse. And then the shenanigans with Aiden oh dear god- she breaks up with Big because she wants to get married, then she’s with Aiden and eventually when he asks her to marry him she doesn’t because “she doesn’t want to get married” and then she marries Big 😂 like she just kept creating her own problems. She is to Aiden what Big was to her- a POS that continued to string someone else along and give repeated mixed signals to while using them as a placeholder until someone they deemed better came along.

    With Charlotte and her ring, Carrie wasn't asking for Charlotte to give up her ring. She wasn't pointing out how Charlotte wasn't willing to help her, IN ANY WAY THAT SHE COULD!!! Samantha didn't offer money, but she did offer to help budget. Miranda offered money help. Charlotte stayed quiet, and I'd be upset about that, too.

    • @PorshaLauri
      @PorshaLauri  2 роки тому +3

      As far as the storylines written into the show? Yes and no, I think it’s clear that they were writing into preconceived notions of what a gay character should be on screen and not diving deeper into the nuances of living that life and maybe they couldn’t or weren’t given the opportunity based on what the network wanted (in reference to Stanford). I also think that bleeds into how they shaped the female characters, as they too at times, play into unrealistic stereotypes of women. I feel like I always need to add on that I think the show did push boundaries and assert more dominance for the female perspective, I just think when looking back critically, there are some aspects that could have been better/more real. I hope that answers your question accurately.

    7:29 Chris Rock said similar when they asked his opinion of S & C... he said he liked it, but #NYC is tooo *Diverse* a city to not have any cool Blk cast-members. paraphrased.
    12:53 Carrie and SJP, both #GenX Pluto in #Virgo
    Millennials = #Pluto in #Libra
    15:41 the writers are likely Generation Xers too... Duality, like the younger generations h8 the older generations' ideologies, most of them; how do u think the older gens feel about the younger gens' ideologies?
    To Fuse the Two isn't proving to be a Sanely good ride.
    19:41 Carrie said it in one of those episodes, Aiden offered her 'effortless' love! No push-pull, no withholding dance; the things, Big did, DID!
    22:00 Miranda is her true #Aries self on S & C, in fact, they all feel like their sun signs; Kim/Samantha = #Leo, Charlotte = #Pisces... but Carrie always felt like a #Libra, more than SJP's an Aries.

    Listen all the political correctness everyone wants from a show that probably didn’t even grasp the concept of political correctness at the time needs to just relax, yes its a bit cringe looking back at it today but they really didn’t cross any lines too drastically. This show wouldn’t be made the same way if remade today and I actually think it would be a complete bore. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Any show that tries to be all inclusive and PC as to not step on any toes feels forced and has no real substance or context.

      Great comment. And you’ve pretty much highlighted everything that is wrong with AJLT. It’s gone so much the “other way” (via forced wokeism) that I almost 🤮 while watching it. So stale & depressing!
