SKZ and Div1 (the division of JYPE that they're under) actively, gleefully both promote and follow their own ships. They watch their own ship content, refer to ship names and dynamics directly, etc. Hell, the Japanese channel even sideways referred to Minsung within the last couple of days. So as long as it's done respectfully, no reasonable STAY will object. (Anyone who comes yelling at you about it should just be blocked, as that's a red flag -- they're often homophobic solo stans who get _really_ toxic and aggressive.) Plus, shipping doesn't _have_ to have a default romantic/s3xual connotation; sometimes we're in it for the particular dynamics for any set of members, since they all vary so much. It's totally ok.
Also, STAY are one of the queerest fandoms in the industry. That's the conclusion of basically every poll or other data-collecting venture ever run. The majority of the fandom are some flavor of queer, not white, and over age 20 (the converse of which are all common assumptions by new fans or reactors or article writers or whatever). "Stray Kids, not Straight Kids" is a running joke because of how rainbow the members sometimes act and because that is literally a quote, said by multiple members multiple times over the years (granted, in a different context).
The Korean title of this song equates to "Obsession" or "Compulsion." They knew exactly what they were doing with the impressions this video and song give. When Hyunjin heard the instrumental track from Chan for the first time, we literally heard him comment that it reminded him of 50 Shades of Grey (btw, yes, Hyunjin was fully involved in writing this song; whenever there are unit tracks, all members of each unit participate in writing their own unit's song). And the director is an openly gay man in very conservative Korea; he's fully aware of the deliberate homoerotic overtones.
I'm glad you're seeing past the overt concept and thinking about the actual message of the lyrics, though. Because yes, the s3xualized imagery is a metaphor. Just as "Drive" uses driving as a metaphor for s3x, "Red Lights" uses s3x as a metaphor for obsession/compulsion. While they left the lyrics open to interpretation, we watched them during the creation of this song. The actual meaning, first and foremost, is rooted in their well-known tendency to overwork, to drain themselves in overinvestment in their jobs and go without sleep in favor of working all night. There are a couple hints in the lyrics, like the reference to "set the mic up" and "I'm staying up all night." Red lights are presumably the lights on studio equipment.
And the two members are portraying two sides of the same person or two entities within one being (as Hyunjin referred to it, it's kind of a Venom [the character, not the SKZ song] idea). One (Chan, who starts out looking fairly orderly, with mostly yellow lighting) is the "normal" one, the one fighting against being controlled by his obsession. The other (Hyunjin, who pretty much always has red lighting and is given a more wild and disorderly presentation) is the obsession or obsessed side, fighting to be free of restraint, taunting the controlled side with reminders along the lines of "tell me you hate me, but I know you can't live without me." Notice how much of their movement is mirroring.
You won't get canceled for recognizing the shibari-esque ropework. It's intentional, and we know it. Some also recognize that Chan clearly knows how to properly choke someone. Fewer know that Hyunjin said he liked getting choked. And a few of us know that there's a Ring of O (and know what a Ring of O is) in SKZ's shared jewelry collection that's been passed among them and worn by more than one member. 😆

Hyunjin wrote the original lyrics and gave them to Chan who translated and, I think, "toned" the lyrics down quite a bit. Hyunjin said it was a lot more intense originally. The Korean name of the song is compulsion and Hyunjin said his inspiration for it was Venom. The two of them in the video are supposed to represent the two clashing sides of one person.

@@AmariLeone LOL! Some people will insist it's about their working habits since everyone knows that Chan is compulsive about working and he said that is what it was about, but he also said Drive was about driving. Ha! Also, on Howl in Harmony, not being able to stop working even if they want to and are exhausted was used as an example of the feeling they wanted to express. However, on Howl in Harmony they also said the word sexy fifty times, something they had not done before, lyrics that would make STAYS' hearts flutter. And Taste, which Hyunjin also wrote, is the sequel to Red Lights so, for me, although it could be about any type of compulsion, I believe Hyunjin's intention was about obsessive love.

@@tapioooca5182 I didn't say Hyunjin wrote all the lyrics. According to Hyujin, they both did:
"Red Lights... I wrote the lyrics, but Chan translated them into English, so basically, we both wrote them. I went to him with ideas and asked for feedback, then we mixed it with the top line he had. I didn't write it myself. We wrote it together."
I believe the "toning" down was probably Chan, or mostly him.
The only person I've heard say that Hyunjin wrote ALL the lyrics was Chan himself in one of his lives and I didn't believe him. Would you believe him?

The deep gaze in the mirrors are like they are looking for the other half of themselves. Every STAY went crazy when this MV was released. So glad you reacted to it.

This song is about obsession/addiction. Bang Chan’s addiction to writing music and producing that doesn’t even allow him to sleep, and Hyunjin s obsession with dancing that can sometimes even be a compulsion. When this video first came out Stays were scandalized until Bang Chan came out and explained it’s symbolism and the real meaning. Also, in Asian cultures red string represents fate or destiny. I am just assuming that when they are tied up with the red string in this video it has something to do with that.

Like most people know Red symbolized danger, passion, anger, love and so on, it can be understood they're in a toxic (relationship or situation) they want to leave it but they're in it too deep they don't want to at this point, they're angry at themselves for it.
in an interview about the song Chan said he wrote the song thinking of about oneself struggle (like for him with his perfectionism or his workaholic tendencies so red lights as the recording lights)
Chan: “Sometimes when I’m finished with my schedule, and I don’t need to work on anything, I just go to my workroom without even realizing it. My body just takes me there. I arrive there and sit on the chair and I’m like, ‘Why am I here?’ I feel like I have to do something. My body keeps on moving and the project file is open. This happens a lot.”
Hyunjin: “I’m fond of music, dancing, working on projects and everything. However when I’m not able to handle difficulties that come with it physically and mentally, the stress I get from that situation? You know, the obsession with having to work hard all the time? That kind of stuff…”
Chan: "And I guess the genre of the music is kind of, a little dark and, like, it’s a bit-” [Hyunjin interjects: “SEXY!”]
In the end they said it doesn't have a fixed meaning it's up for the listeners to interpret it how they like.
That's why 99% of SKZ lyrics doesn't gender the subject of their lyrics, there is intention absolutely but they allow listeners to get whatever they want out of the music. Looking forward to more reactions!

Watching "Red Lights" for the first time is like watching a sex scene with your parents in the room! As the song, in Korean, is named "Compulsion," I feel the song is about ANY compulsion ... work related, relationship related, any toxic interaction. I can admit that my desire to watch this video has likely reached the level of compulsion. Watching SKZ videos is always an experience! They evoke such a strong emotional response -- happy, sad, melancholy, angry -- that I have to pause to take a breath and calm down. As for "Red Lights," many people use the term "sexy" to describe it, but I would say it's more "sensual."
By the way, Chan does NOT need full shirts ... EVER!
I even made a notification out of Bang Chan's response to Hyunjin's "Hard Sexy!"

I must see you listen to "drive" by Bang Chan and Lee Know! It is a bit softer in terms of sounds but it is the third piece to what us Stays call the golden trio which is taste, red lights, and drive. All of them are sexy but drive is not about toxic love like the other ones.
Also I know people have already said it but the ship stuff is fine as long as it is not toxic. The boys know about it and are fine with it as they know it is part of fandoms. They simply want Stray Kids and Stay happy and they have not changed how they act to solidify or reject ships, even joke about it and use their ship name when doing activities together. The two main ships are from way at the beginning which is Minsung (Han and Lee Know) and Changlix (Changbin and Felix) but honestly all duos from the boys have moments that are great. They just all love each other and are probably one of the closest groups ever.
I know I speak for all Stays when I say Thank You for enjoying our boys and helping share them!

So, this is going to be long 😅 I started with your first reaction and watched a few, and I already liked your vibe, specially you asking questions, on top of the analysis of the stuff you know about producing (which is why I clicked on the first to start with). But then I jumped a bit to watch you react to Taste and Red Lights, because that's where two other reactors lost me. You gained a subscriber! Taste is a fire song that for once puts Lee Know front and center (no pun intended to the performances but, yeah, we've all seen it by now) and you appreciated that and I was like, please, let he's reaction to Red Lights be like this because I want to suscribe and watch the rest. And it was. Of course the visual is intense here, like super intense, but I had a good feeling, because in Taste you said you liked when things turned eerie or something like that and this is very intense in a sensual way but also in a, huh, I can't scape way, in a more general sense that I personally really like. So yeah, loved the reaction, loved you reacted accordingly to what is shown and then you took a minute to say hey, I realise this probably means something else (a lot of people, and I mean a looooot, don't bother to dig into the meaning and I'm like... please, people, be curious, and you are and I appreciate that). Also, I know nothing about producing music, so it's really cool to learn more about that (and I personally don't mind you pausing, because then I know which section you're talking about). So, yeah, I'll be sure to check out more of your videos. As far as recommendations, I've listened to Stray Kids since I think November and I'm still going through their discography, but so far I've liked all that their MENU has to give. Anyway, take care!

If you want to peel enough layers off the Skz onion so you cry, try Felix' solo Deep End, or Bang Chan's I Hate to Admit.
You can see parts of the process of Chan and Hyunjin writing Redlights, and talking with the video director and shooting the video, on the Stray Kids mini-series "Camp Howl in Harmony" where the full group broke into three sub-groups to write, record, and video one song per group, which were all released on the NoEasy album in 2021. The other two were the ballad Gone Away by Han, Seungmin and IN, and the fun summer bop Surfin' by Lee Know, Changbin and Felix.
The group has a pretty good relationship with LGBTQ+ fans, they purposely tend to avoid using gendered pronouns in their lyrics so that anyone listening can imagine themselves as part of the song, and they have made a point of not using female models/dancers/actresses as love objects in their videos, they also are supportive of fans who mention coming out to family, or talk about their same sex relationships during fan meets or online chats. They know they are shipped--pretty much every member of the group has been shipped with every other member at some time or another, and they tend to play off the most popular ships and stick little nods to them in their videos and non-music content for fun. Before this video/song, Hyunjin and Chan were not much shipped, and they haven't done much to encourage it in their other content, so the little flurry of shipment that came up after the video has mostly died down.
As far as the imagery in this particular video--the lyrics were initially meant to express obsession of all kinds, especially the obsession of overwork (the "red lights" can be seen as the red recording lights in a studio--Chan is a notorious workaholic). During the little mini series you can see how the concept began changing and moving toward obsessive love in particular as they talked with the video director, although they always had the idea of using the two of them as the only characters in the video. And part the purpose of the intense sexy vibe is almost certainly a marketing strategy, part of it is to keep a cleaner "love free/scandal free" image in Korea, where the big "scandals" almost all have to do with male/female relationships, and part of it is that kpop companies have discovered that teasing the rainbow community with hints of non-standard and/or homosexual attractions is a great marketing strategy. And part of it is that the two of them were ready to expand their images out of the "young asexual boy" stage into the "sexy adult" stage, while sticking to the "we don't use women as sex objects" path they've had since debut.
I mostly listen to the song rather than watch the video, and I don't really think of the video imagery when it comes up I just enjoy it.

This video as a lot already said, is both about relationships and also about their own relationship to music, sometimes both can be very intense, harsh, and hard/toxic, but they can't leave it...they are addicted.
Most songs are like "innocent" looking videos with a very sexy meaning, but this song looks very sexy, and the lyrics are meaningful. Even if they were meant to be more passionate/intense.
You can watch on your own the behind-the-scenes to this song, It's funny, and there's an interview about it too where they talk about it. on their live videos too.
    ALSO!!!! IF YOU READ THIS...

psst, Hyunjin is a huge fan of Taemin (from Shinee) and has gotten lot of influence from him not only to his dancing but also the sensuality into the music he writes. I'm in no way saying Hyunjin is a copy of Taemin but you can see the influence. (I LOVE TAEMIN)

I apologize in advance for the book, but It should really help give you the insight on the particular areas you seemed to require answers for. I get it, no worries. You want to have correct info.
Yes, Hyunjin was definitely responsible for the original lyrics of this song, And then BangChan was responsible for being the responsible one and making sure that the song wouldn't get banned in Korea. 😂 (I personally think that's one of the reasons he didn't just write "Taste" himself, and THEN go to the others for their thoughts. He's a smart young man who's incredibly understanding of his own... Let's call them quirks. Lol Then of course BangChan did the production, however I truly believe that this song was when the fire really got lit in Hyunjin when it comes to production. He's always been interested, but just like when he went from basically hating dance to who he is today, he really needed to have that moment that gave him a reason to throw himself into a massive learning experience. Which with how busy all members of Stray Kids already are, is a truly a big burden to take on.
So BangChan took him through the process step by step as he worked, because he needed to know as they went what he was going for in terms of sound when he was writing. That's their big secret to their music lol everyone having unique natural talents is countless subjects and the fact they THEY are being it. With Stray kids, the lyrics and instrumentals truly do become one. I think that comes from the natural process of being the ones who are doing both the lyrics AND producing. Because at this point 3RACHA are a single entity when it comes to that process. In other words, Han may write the lyrics and Changbin may come up with the melody, meanwhile Chan may have to produce it by himself. However they are able to truly get inside each other's heads and know what it is they should do to bring the song to life.
Well, Hyunjin isn't 3RACHA lol so... Here we are!! With a whole new, and somehow COMPLETELY different from ALL their other music. Which already consists of the 40+ genres, counting both SKZ and 3RACHA discography. Lol what can I say, this group is pretty amazing. They are 8 remarkably different individuals when it comes to personality, taste (no pun intended), talents and voices. Yes they work so dang well together that even when they don't have to be together they are, and even when they aren't they wish they were. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Lol I guess when you have that, you can truly do amazing things.
Oh yeah, and you seemed a little unsure of where to place them when it comes to their level at which they are involved. It's all them, every single step. From mixing to recording, the production is all them. And they have 4 idol level producer friends (one of them is actually a DJ under JYPE) who they have called in countless times to bounce ideas off of and get opinions from. After all, it's a constant learning process and the only way to get past producers block, is to talk to a producer who's not you. Lol
Of course when this happens, Chan includes them in the credits. So if 3RACHA and another producer are in the same song credits for production, that's why. If a jon 3RACHA member decided to produce, then they will have one of them (or another a together, like I said they are like the guys, not massive names in the producing world yet, but working their way there. To the guys they are literally just their friends.) Outside of that, Chan has chosen to have one of them co-arrange the tracks with him. That is an aspect he is still working on n mastering, so he has yet to go on lone wolf on that.
Besides, you need different minds when making arrangements to keep them consistently fresh. And if they are doing a full length album and he's spread incredibly thin with schedules, there will be a couple songs that he will decide to entrust the arrangements of to one of the 4-5 they have come to solely work with. Then he'll look it over, make changes if necessary, and then give it his good ole seal of leader approval when he gets a spare moment to do so.... At the end of the day, if you were to break each creation process of a song down into four base steps. Lyrics, composition, production, and arrangement. They will always have their name on 3-4 of them on every song that goes on an album. However that 4th arrangement step will just be Chan, along with another producer.
They only have one song they don't have these statistics on. Their first Japanese track, "All In" was a gift from JYP himself. They couldn't turn it down even if they wanted to. Both because it would have broken his heart (he put a lot of work into it lol) but also because they were still learning Japanese and they did need a good debut song for that market. So, they accepted, and made it clear that it was a one time thing. Haha. So the lyrics on that song are not theirs and you can tell. The production however, 3RACHA does actually have the credits for! They couldn't very well have the sound not be them. So for that track, it would be 2/4. Still, not a bad average when you have 160+ songs. 🖤🖤
As for Shipping, go for it. Some of the guys say it makes them feel even closer to each other. The ones who don't say that, they just blush and wink. STAY is known as the queerest fandom and SKZ by far one of the queerest behaved groups. of course I say behaved because we don't know. Welcome to the homophobic world of kpop, where the don't ask don't tell rule still exists. However every stay has their own personal queries when it comes to some of the members themselves, and those members definitely don't do anything to stop it. If anything they promote it too. Even their company. They do as they please and interact with one another without restraint, and the company simply cuts and edits any footage they release of them free of whatever they don't want fans to see.
Whether that be to keep us from getting the wrong idea from and nothing more. Or that the guys just happen to be extremely close and affectionate with one another because they possess zero toxic masculinity.... Or perhaps even because they are entitled to a private life despite what much of the kpop industry seems to believe. Because let's face it, in a music industry whose lifestyle attracts a certain breed of man who is either alright with spending years around only other guys with a dating ban when it comes to woman, there is indeed going to be a portion of the population that is indeed queer. Yet another very normal thing that the industry refuses to believe, but indeed must exist. Which one it is through, none of our business. And as long as they are happy that's all I care about.
Point is, they found a way to be themselves and still protect themselves. That said, we see what we see lol like you in that song... And that's nothing compared to what I have witnessed. So yeah it's a very "love is love" fandom for the most part. Even the company has fun with it. We just try to never label any of the guys with any specific term since we don't actually know, and we appreciate that we get to see their real bonds and affection for one another. That we don't have a group who is miserable, or one that doesn't love each other. As well as appreciating that we know theirs is real, because some groups are forced to actually pretend to care for one another. They spend every moment on camera acting in a skit show they hate. Or they simply aren't close to one another, and therefore end up spending their days basically doing fanservice. Naw, I wouldn't trade what we have for anything. Besides, at the end of the day all of us gals known they are way too gorgeous, talented and famous to ever go for any of us. So we aren't bothered by the "possibilities"... All the fans still love attempting to flirt with them to no avail. Lmao They don't seem to care whether the person is male or female. They treat all fans the same, and they all giggle and blush at our lame pick-up lines no matter the gender of the person giving them. So you can probably imagine, they have a lot of fanboys too. Lmao

A little unrelated but there is a group called onlyoneof and they are particularly known for showing queer themes throughout their songs and videos. If you would react to them I wound recommend starting with the member solo projects called underground idol starting with Yoojung's begin. Another note is that they are actually going to star in a Korean Boys Love series or K-BL for short.
