Hyunjin's journey with dance is truly amazing. When he was a trainee he was actually bad at dancing (his words) and even got scolded by staff for it to where he would cry. Other trainees told him it didnt matter since he could debut with his visuals alone so he worked 10x harder to improve his dance since he couldn't stand the idea of only being known for his looks. He says bragging about something you didnt work for is so lame. And now look where he is 🥺To this day he doesnt like being called the visual of skz

"wait, hold up, there's back ground dancers?" 💀 i choked on my food laughing 😂
for the floor work in the artist of the month his shoes kept slipping on the floor there so he had to change how he got up from how he practiced. it's in the behind the scenes for it. he also lost his balance and accidentally stayed on beat stumbling back lol
i think play with fire was a release of some feelings over being forced into hiatus over false rumors. this wasn't long after his return

He's really still young and this much talented

I've watched so many reactions, and my favorite are the ones where the reactor actually *adds* something to the original video. I love how you talk about and explain both dance and rap. It's so interesting, especially as someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about either of those. It makes me appreciate skz so much more once I have a deeper understanding of the dance and rap aspects!
And I don't mind the pauses at all--honestly, I prefer them to you just watching the video in silence. I watch reaction videos to see someone's reactions, not to see them have a blank face.

when the party’s over over was basically him officially presenting his first contemporary choreographed piece, if i’m not wrong he was fairly new to contemporary in general but he has such an artistic soul that it’s impossible for you to not enjoy him perform, even some professional dancers reacted to it and were impressed, hyunjin is born to be on stage and create art
i’m sure other people have already mentioned that criminal is taemin’s original solo work but you need to check him out in case you don’t know him already cause he’s the idol of idols, truly an artist

He doesn't just dance yk he feels the music he tells the story his emotions and facial expressions he doesn't use only one style his skill r so perfect! Hyunjin is really best dancer I've ever seen in 4th gen and near legends r kai and taemin,, professional dancers always recognize him near those legends,,hyunjin has his own style that u saw and I think that's literally an art itself

You should watch the behind the scenes of the making of his Artist of the Month video. He really pushed himself for this choreo and it paid off! He's amazing. P.S. as a fellow dancer did you catch those tiny tics he did to the beat at 11:59 (your video). Very few people catch those tiny little musicality moments. But as a former dancer, those are everything, which is probably why I love watching him so much. Thanks for sharing your reactions ! 😀 🙂 😊 🥰

Love your commentary, I would recommend watching the behind making of his studio choom to see him work on it. As you said, the interpretation is up to us but let me tell you some backstories from these videos.
    When the party's over:
Our hyunjin's first choreography video, he made this after the pandemic happened and he said this is what he felt not being able to perform on stage without the audience which he missed. At this time, he just only started contemporary! A beginner you must say and you're a real dancer bc you didn't focus on the technicalities which he still hasn't perfected at this time but the emotions and story he was telling through his dancing.
    Criminal:
This is a dance cover, a gift for stays because he promised one. Their channel created a playlist for this but unfortunately there hasn't been a second entry yet.
    Play with fire:
This was his comeback after his hiatus. He had to take a break which is why he wasn't in the show kingdom. From our interpretation based on what happened, it is a right vs wrong type of person in society story. The right is the princely, clean, well mannered persona at the start while the wrong is the different, rough, messy, crazy persona. The right person is how the public sees hyunjin but then he has an inner maniac who loves dancing and is different from what they want him to be. This story also portrayed what happened to him during hiatus, the haters wanted him silenced hence choking and due to hiatus, he still continued to dance outside the mirror (public eye/camera) and continue dancing crazily in the dark showing his untouched state (hair, makeup, clothes as a celeb). Then music came back and you see him dancing alone in the dark with a spotlight which is how I see as him dancing alone during his break. Then comes back in the original room and ends it with him grabbing his throat like silencing someone. One thing hyunjin confirmed is that how it was on purpose that he started with a clean, styled clothes but then it was continuesly becoming messy and messier as the video progresses. This video is really meaningful for us. It shows hyunjin's bravery and passion for dancing.
    Aotm:
The director chose hyunjin for this and hyunjin thanked them for trusting him because it was said that he rejected it because he just got back from the hiatus and his confidence turned a bit low at that time :( so he rejected a lot of solo offers but studio choom waited for him and convinced him that he will do well. So hyunjin decided to accept it and they only had little time to prepare for this also while he was promoting with the group in music shows at the same time. I highly recommend watching the behind video, you will see how hyunjin works off cam/stage. And the explanation to this performance will be explained by hyunjin as well.
Thank you for taking your time to see hyunjin's dance works. He is a kind, sweet person who loves dancing and art. He used to do a lot of vlives, him talking, eating, singing, dancing. He had car lives on the way home back when he was a music show mc. He also had counseling vlives where he would read stays concerns that he asked for on the vlive community. Now, vlive is gone, he hasn't done a youtube live yet. All skz members are alike, kind and loving.

Yes I came here to add this. It was his comeback dance.
I saw another reactor suggest he might be trying to shed his prince title slightly and show he is not a perfect prince, he has other sides/ characteristics and that's ok.
There may not have been as much backlash to the rumours if people hadn't put him in the perfect prince persona box. He totally came back with straight fire and showed the haters he just comes back stronger.

@@growley333 exactly, he is not just a preety face, to only call someone a visual, i think is a terrible thing to say, people are much more complicated then a preety face, he is beautiful from inside and he is an artist, he likes drawing and he is good at that plus other things, if i had met him on person i would probably ask him thay we draw or paint something together, i also draw and paint.

Edit: I love when people pause and talk about what’s going through their mind. Gives some insight into their interpretation of the video and what is happening
Edit2: for when the parties over, during COVID he wanted to work on his contemporary dancing (because he actually was first learning to dance as a trainee) and so he worked on his contemporary dance and then choreographed this

  • @RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks

For "Play with Fire," context elevates things. This was his first solo project to release after he returned from unjustified hiatus. "OH" was the "SKZ is reunited" surprise announcement, but "PWF" was "I'm back. You tried to get rid of me, and you failed. Here's my story." One of his most well-known nicknames is Prince -- even random music shows and announcers call him that -- and that ties in here.
We have a perfect prince enter this quiet scene, examine his idealized image in a mirror, tie up the hair he's famous for, and then grab his throat and be silenced. So instead of using the words he's not allowed to speak (all eight of them were and still are not able to so much as mention the hiatus), he dances, slowly coming apart, ever more unhinged, until he ends completely disheveled, his princely image all but gone, just the raw self left, the vestiges of his facade clinging by a single button...and then he grabs his throat again as a reminder that he's still not allowed to speak.
A coordinated attack of lies tried to take him (and several other people) out, to destroy his career and life, and in typical kpop fashion, he couldn't say a word to defend himself. Even when it was proven false, he couldn't speak about it. He could only keep dancing, keep writing, showing himself to be a person, not a perfect image, silenced but not gone. The prince showed himself as the person underneath, silenced but still here.
Basically, it's a cool story to see and interpret even without context. But with the context, especially if you were there at the time (it was _hell,_ full of silence from the company, a gag order on the members, and extreme worry about his well-being, all surrounded by the worst of kpop fandoms' and knetizens' toxicity, which is still in full force today, complete with d3ath threats and gruesomeness on a coordinated daily basis), it's a whole other level of meaningful. He was not the same person when he came back, and he's never quite returned to how he was before; in the vaguest terms (all he's allowed), even he has mentioned this. This was a declaration of survival, a protest against injustice, a finger pointed at hypocrisy, all wrapped in instantly viral art.

Cracked up so hard @ "wait, there's back up dancers ..." you're getting wrecked for sure. Pause all you need to because you have good things to add, I hate the reactions that just sit and watch without any input. I really appreciate your dancer's perspective. Hyunjin's dance to Billie Eilish was the first thing I ever saw him perform, and what eventually led me to Stray Kids - and it was so moving and hit my emotions so hard, I spent the rest of the day looking for his dances, then who he was and of course that brought me fully down the rabbit hole. I love seeing you appreciate him so well. I love ALL of the Stray Kids, but his dance is what drew me in first.

The play with fire was also like a comeback for him after his break due to false bullying rumors. To me it really showed how he was finally ready to try to break from the 4th Gen Prince title that he has always hated and show him as the dancer he wants to be. He never wanted to just be the pretty boy and you can see that even in the survival show and stories of his training he worked so hard to be able to sing, rap, and dance even though he could easily get in by visuals alone. He is the story of success that comes with hard work and I am glad that so many people now appreciate his skills on top of his visuals

Hyunjin is definetly born for dancing. He delivers the emotions with his body perfectly. I remember the first time his AOTM was released, i freaked out. I was waiting for that video to come out for the entire day and when it came i was literally shaking. It was his best out of everything he had done before. And I can 100% say that he improved so much compared to his debut. He didn't have any dancing experience but then he made sure that he filled those inexperienced years with his hardwork and natural talent. He proved that he is more than just a pretty face. I love him so much! He has been through a lot, and im so proud of him. Idk if you are planning to go deeper for each skz members but I definitely recommend you to see Felix and Lee Know. Unfortunately they don't have many dance videos but they are definitely one of the best dancers of 4th gen. I really wanna see them dance more. Especially Lee Know. Since he is one of the main dancers in SKZ(even in the entire 4th gen) I wanted his AOTM to come so bad but they didn't give it to him. But thankfully we have some of his covers(with other groups) and solo dance breaks within SKZ. I recommend Dawn(he chorographed it), his tiger inside and finesse fancam. He has a lot of predebut stuff which I'm obsessed about. There is also a video of him dancing to Michael Jackson.(not everyone knows that lol) AND THAT ONE VİDEO WHEN HE DANCES WITH HYUNJIN IN THE DANCE PRACTICE ROOM ON VLIVE... With Felix we don't even have any solo work. I really wanna see him do something on his own. In Kingdom he did a lot with his dancing. Other than that, I recommend the dance break he does with the other danceracha. Wow and Taste are a MUST! YOU SHOULD DEFINITLY SEE THE DANCERACHA VLIVE IT IS SOOOO GOOD!(2020)(you can check that on your own, you don't have to film yourself) Omg i literaly wrote a whole damn essay lol.

Speaking of idol dancers.....have you seen Ten and WinWin from NCT and their beautifully self-choreographed dance to "Lovely," by Billie Eilish and Khalid?

loved all of your commentary and interpretations! my theory for play with fire was that he was sort of fighting against the super beautiful princely image the industry throws at him. He becomes increasingly more disheveled as the dance goes on. sort of letting go of that neat and beautiful façade :)
(editing to add that being in the fandom during this time was actually bananas. this was the first piece of content he dropped after being forced to go on hiatus which is also why i kind of feel like it was meant to be a big f you to everyone. Crazy times to be a stay for sure!)
loving all the content and hope youre well!

Edit: I seriously loved how you explained the Play With Fire dance and I can admit it gave me the same vibe as Red Lights sort of with that like…obsessive trait and trying to hold it back/keep it inside. Also a thing I noticed when the music was faded and all you could hear was the flames it looked like he was holding a metaphorical match and he threw it to like…light the flames? I could’ve misinterpreted it wrong or something idk I’m not a dancer but that’s just something I noticed lol.

Criminal was choreographed originally for Taemin, who is with SM entertainment. I see a lot more Michael Jackson influences in SM's choreographers than in JYPE's. If you look up the dance practice for Taemin's original version of Criminal, you can see how much of his own style Hyunjin added, while still remaining true to the original. BTW< I believe that you watched these in reverse chronological order, so the Criminal cover was done before Hyunjin had really started choreographing much.

THANK YOU!! I’ve always said this! I LOVE when people dance or choreograph to the silence in between songs. It’s like they make you hear the intention or the “unsaid words” that the artist is trying to convey.
It HIT ME WHEN YOU POINTED THAT OUT!
Cause I choreograph and sometimes i choreograph with a close friend of mine that is kinda like my dance partner. And when I try to choreograph to the silent moments or the little adlibs or sounds that people don’t usually hear or pay attention to in a song, she doesn’t get it!! And it stresses me out so much cause I feel that that part needed something but no one gets me!! I started to think I was crazy.
I love dance so much and I’ve always considered it my art (even though I’m not a professional dancer). So when you got it!! I almost screamed!! Seriously thank you!!
I love when choreographers make you hear sounds or beats in a song that you’ll normally not notice. Like just because they hit that note or sound or that beat with a move, you HEAR IT! That’s freaking crazy! I’ve heard “when the party’s over” a few times, but watching hyunjin’s choreo made me feel like I was hearing it for the first time. So many details I didn’t notice in the song!
Like dance is meant to add to a song, not just accompany it!! Do you get me?!?

Hyunjin does such amazing body rolls- super sexy and controlled. He has the spine of a snake, it’s so supple. 🥵
Edit: Have you seen the ballet dancer Polunin dance to Hozier? It’s incredible and Hyunjin seems to have adopted some moves (possibly) from Polunin in the Billie Eilish choreography. ua-cam.com/video/LNkOhArBcc8/v-deo.html

I really enjoy your reactions, pauses and all, because you really pick up on details and provide interesting commentary!
As others have already commented, 'Play with Fire' was his big comeback after his 4-month hiatus due to false bullying allegations, and you can really see the choreo reflect his emotions about the enforced silence. While the hiatus was really detrimental to his mental health and confidence, the silver lining was that he could focus on his craft: writing music, dancing and doing choreo, painting, doing charity work, even learning to play the piano.
Imho, Hyunjin is the best 4th Gen dancer, because of his musicality, his expressiveness, his raw emotion, and his melding of "male" and "female". He shares all these attributes with Taemin, which may be one reason he wanted to cover 'Criminal'.
On a side note, my list of the previous gens' best male dancers and their connections to Skz:
-1st Gen: Rain (soloist): Skz's cover of his track 'It's Raining' is a treat, especially Minho's dance break. Skz were also guests on his variety show, and that's a great fun video to watch e.g. on Twitch.
-2nd Gen: Taemin (member of SHINee and SuperM, soloist): well, the connection is the 'Criminal' dance cover here. There is a side-by-side comparison of the og dance practice and Hyunjin's cover, which may be of interest, as it shows how Hyunjin combines some of Taemin's and some of the backup dancers' choreo into his version.
-3rd Gen: Kai (member of EXO and SuperM, soloist): Skz's live cover of EXO's 'Call Me Baby' is a must-see, as is the Kingdom Mayfly dance team performance to EXO's 'Wolf'.

As a BLINK; circa 2020 (Blackpink is what got me into Kpop) and then later a "Neverland" ((G)-IDLE) fan)".... it was Hyunjin and his dancing that made me explore more into SKZ. They were the first 'boy group' I've stanned, and have been stanning them hardcore for like 6 months.. long enough that like 3 months ago, I bought their concert tickets (it'll be my first kpop concert). like ALL.OF.THEM. just hit so different!!! I would like, someday, to backtrack and go through BTS (where you come from). i've watched all of the 'rise of bangtan' vids, sadly, no longer available, but don't really have -a list- to start me out on... so if you, or anyone, can help me out that'd be great!!

    • @Boraheartsss
      @Boraheartsss  Рік тому +1

I always recommend new fans to start with the BU (Bangtan Universe). It starts with there HYYH trilogy, which was the first time they changed their look and theme from the "bad boy school trilogy" from their debut days. It goes more deeper into meaningful lyrics and messages; so it would be:
      I Need U (original ver.)
      Butterfly Onstage : Prologue
      Run
Wings short films (1-7) (after watching these listen to the singles that go with the videos, they are all written by the members who sing them and relate both to the story and their real life)
      Blood Sweat & Tears
      Euphoria
      Fake Love
IMO HYYH and Wings were their best works. Then you have the Louve Yourself trilogy (record breaking series) and Map of the Soul albums (when they gained global success). I start before then because I think the story before their fame is more important than their hit and trendy songs :)
EDIT: the things that happen in the BU are fictional and not related to their real lives, but the lyrics of the songs are written by the members or RM (the main songwriter) and do relate to their real lives and feelings!
