it’s fucked. it’s genuinely fucked. could go on for hours, but i think this is a pretty relevant quote that applies to the situation. “The devil doesn’t come to you in a red cape and horns, he comes to you with everything you ever wished for and dreamed of.”
Hit the nail on the head! I actually feel bad for them. Paying the mortgage on a 14 million dollar house as a teenager? What happens when the money dries up?
The parents are so greedy to put their children through this. Wtf would they buy such expensive house and why would they hire such demanding managers? And the fact that they inserted themselves into these reality shows? Let your daughters live their lives a little. Its not healthy, the parents are not being parents
@@amandafaries5474 Blows my mind how so many people who run into money don't do what it takes to ensure that money grows in the future. Even in my dumb 25 year old head, the second I ran into money I immediately started thinking how to ensure the money can be multiplied and maybe one day take care of my future children. Nobody knows how long the money will last, so why not take the steps to make it generational if you can?
Wow, imagine being 17, and uttering the sentence "millions of people were sad because they wanted me to die, but I didn't" is just a normal thing for you
I literally had to pause like…..shit man. At 16 I was breaking down in the school bathroom bc I got a bad grade. I couldn’t have handled that comment then (or even now at 22 for that matter). But it’s like, the fact that she was so stoic about it is so heartbreaking ugh
Yeah I remember when that UA-cam channel predicted her death back in march and that channel had actually predicted some ppls deaths before and was right so ppl were certain Charli was gonna die on that date. And I checked the comments and ppl were so happy that she was gonna die? And when she didn't they were disappointed
This is what so many people in these comments don't seem to get. Like, yeah charli isn't a destitute starving child in some warzone, but daily death threats and hate and parental pressure are part of HER reality and it's hard for HER. It would be fucking hard for me too if any of that happened to me now as a full adult.
It's also the idea of if your kid has the chance to do something they "like at the start" that makes them enough money they won't ever have to worry and possible a career they enjoy. A lot of parents would think if I was my kid I'd want my parent to push me to do this cause it's the best "chance" in life for them to make it. Not saying it's okay for parents to do such things, but it's more understandable when you think about it.
I don't care if my child makes millions I will not put them in the position of breadwinner responsible for our financial situation. I don't care if they're 40, make three times my pay, and live in a mansion, when they see me I'm going to slip $10 into their pocket and packing them leftovers because in my heart they'll always be my baby.
Yeah seriously. I've never watched anything that any of them have ever been on or made but I get the sense from headlines and commentary like this that the parents are completely sucked in to the girls' fame and haven't stopped to think about the fact that their kids are kids. They're not full grown adults with autonomy and complete critical thinking skills. The girls deserve a say and to make choices on their own but at the same time, they can't possible see how bad this in full. I don't think the parents evil but definitely neglectful
It’s awful watching that clip of Dixie having an actual nervous breakdown. The parents seemed so disingenuous and bizarre, like they had no idea how to comfort their child as a parent.
honestly, i feel bad for them. like not BAD BAD, but i watched the show and it feels like they were forced to make this show. and if not forced, it seemed like they were forced to really force out their problems as “drama” on the shows, and on the show i can see their actual stress that they have, and in one of the last episodes charli really touches on the hate that she gets, like she’s 17 and gets so much hate for just doing dances. charli really seems like she’s smart and she’s genuine. she doesn’t go around wearing gucci and all this shit, she seems down to earth. i really do, (ik this is stereotypical), but i think it’s the parents fault. when Dixie was having a mental breakdown the parents was more concerned ab the show than her. i think 100% of the cringe stuff and the things that no one likes is the managers and the parents fault, and charli is only 17, she’s 100%. like the haters are so stupid, all of her hate comments are either saying “it’s okay you can take down ur BLM profile picture” which, if she didn’t care ab BLM SHE WOULDVE NEVER MADE IT THAT, she’s only 17, she can support movements, and that she can’t dance and she does tiktok dances, but she’s been doing completive dances since she was 4. like she gets more hate than fucking Zoe Laverne who dated a 13 year old and got preggo by a trump supporter, and the other self obsessed tiktok stars. like it’s really sad.
It's a clip that shouldn't even exist in the first place, they shouldn't have even recorded it. She was breaking down and they put it on film. That's gross
To them, they've become so detached from their children because of the fame that they basically have a thought process that boils down to "Oh no, the paycheck is having a breakdown."
yeah the more I think about it like...it's unethical. It never really goes well. Like you're literally still developing your identity and literal brain yet held to a standard where people look up to you and expect you to be perfect
Really appreciate how you didn't just go "show bad, sisters dumb," It's nice to see someone with some perspective and compassion instead of just taking an easy dunk
Also some fairly relevant perspective. Drew probably dealt with a lot of this (one a much smaller scale) being propelled to Vine fame at, what... 20? 21? Dude sounds like he is empathizing from very real experience.
The D'amelio parents are so odd to me. They seem to be okay with throwing the financial burden on their children, despite witnessing Dixie and Charlie have panic attacks over the very thing that supplies the family's money. Have they ever tried to steer their children away from fame? Or have they accepted, or even encouraged, all the fame and opportunity? Do they even truly register what they're doing to their children?
Exactly my feeling and I also think that maybe if they had left it alone and left Charli and Dixie to continue making tiktoks with dances and things without the pressure of a music career, books, brand deals and Hulu tv shows (????) then maybe the girls (because they are children) wouldn’t face such pressure. Obviously there would be some pressure with such a large audience and some may argue that they want to do these things but seeing how stressed and emotionally tired they are sort of suggests this isn’t the case and they’re being told they want to do these things by management bought for them by their parents. I don’t know if this tv show was the best idea given the bad light it’s put their parents under.
there are actually scenes in the last couple episodes where heidi calls the guy who plans charli's calendar to clear up a week so that she can have a break, so that charli can improve on her mental health. so yes, her parents do have an impact however her parents do still care about her and stuff
@@jazzhutch one week, after planning a whole year jam packed with stuff that is overwhelming her and honestly we don’t know she even wants. Sure a break is good, but going a week without anything then diving back to an overpacked schedule won’t help. She needs to remove some of that weight, not just take the entire weight off for a week only to pack it all back on after that. Granted I don’t know these people, none of us do but I wonder if they’ve ever really sat down with their daughters and asked if they want to do all of this, what exactly they want and to reassure there is not pressure for them to continue this just to pay the bills because that should NEVER be the child’s responsibility.
Money can turn any angel to the most disobedient demon. EXTREMELY few parents would be like: "We don't need that money, all we need is you". Especially not in a country like the US.
That happens as often than you think, heck when 80s pop star Tiffany’s career took off she talked about how her stepfather gleefully quit his job because she was the breadwinner in the family
I couldn’t ever call someone a good parent for allowing cameras to film while their child has a panic or anxiety attack. To not only film but sign off on it being put in a show watched by millions.
not enough attention is being brought to the parents. This entire thing is the fault of their greed for money and fame. They are some of the fakest parents I've ever seen.
@@justsomegirlwithamustache6840 like the point is not whether that's badass or not. She got so famous that people are even predicting her death, dont u realize how sick that is especially for a teenager ?
I think Jennette McCurdy has a really good point: children should not be famous. It’s so damaging. It’s been damaging all throughout history, not just in the present. Watching Dixie and Charli struggle with the anxiety and pressure was painful. My heart goes out to them. I wish they’d had a chance to grow a little more before blowing up…

My first red flag was the dad saying in the promo “we don’t want social media to take over our lives.” Agreeing to start a reality TV show is the exact wrong way to do that, sir. Also, Drew is definitely right to criticize how much her managers are having her do. All based on a kid who likes to dance sometimes.
For sure. If they wanted to do a reality TV series, they could wait until everyone is an adult and the star of the show has lost popularity. If she's making money now, then that's fine and she can have some of the stress without having it all dumped at once.
10:58 Actually, Dixie doesn't even write her own songs. That song that Drew played, was written by 4 professional songwriters. And then they came out with "i was really really really sad :("
that clip of Dixie talking about how she didn’t go to college bc it would be embarrassing if someone played one of her songs at a frat party makes sooo much sense now knowing she didn’t necessarily *want* to be a pop star…
fuck, this also makes me think of the “i don’t do my makeup everyday” vid and now i feel really bad for laughing at that and the memes that people made of that
That doesn’t make any sense. She can go to college and get her degree without ever having to step in a frat party. I mean I get she’s a kid, and that what a kid first thinks of college = parties. Smh
I don't know anything about them, but I do see these sisters pop up sometimes and holy shit I thought Dixie was the younger sister and they were both like 15 or 17. But your comment made me Google and one of them is 20???
The parents are responsible for a lot of this. Even though their parents had little control over the two of them getting so famous, they are the ones who bought the $14 million house, took them on that trip to the Bahamas, hired the managers, and pushed them to do so much. They're just putting more financial responsibility on their kids and then encouraging them to work more to make more money.
Welcome To Britney Spears life give it couple yrs and they will End up in court trying to get control of the money again and wanting to live there own lives it’s sad but it’s coming
I feel like the parents are a lot to blame, they are burdening them financially with that 14 million dollar house and other life style choices, which are not necessary
It's horrible that they bought that huge mansion when they financially depend on kids to pay it off. They definitely bit off more than they could chew.
Exactly. The fact that they could've just let their kids be kids and let them deal with the fame in their own way (Charli could've sought out brand deals/sponsors on her own, or she might not have wanted to do other things at all and is content with making tiktoks), but instead they started immediately capitalizing off of it, knowing their kids would probably heed their advice because they're the parents. At a certain point, what is the line between letting your kids have fun on tiktok and forcing them to do brand deals/make tiktoks in order to support your family financially? It's just such a stupid decision regardless.
@@meixuanler3535 the worst part is that the parents joined tiktok when they saw that their two kids had millions of followers. You can tell that the parents only care about money and retiring early.
Yeah, they’re the adults they should know better. Put the money in trust accounts and IRAs, maybe invest some of it. Also they should probably do a better job of establishing boundaries with, and protecting the girls from, the managers and other show biz parasites. @user-lt1nw2hr6m Possibly, but it's also possible that the deluge of people around her pushing her to do more more more prevents that from really being an option. Do you know how bad that is for an actual literal child's psychology?
I still blame the parents. They bought the 14 million dollar house, they signed the contracts for the managers, they sign the TV deals and hire the live-in chef. They're the ones who set the girls expectations so high, and since they hired the managers, they're the one driving the girls crazy with the work load. The high pressure environment was created by the parents, not the kids.
I thought exactly the same. Spot on. If my kid earned that much I'd put at least half of it away in a trust fund and I'd let them do their thing. Apparently 20+ millions are not enough, we always need *more*.
Can you really blame them tho? We commonly consider that kind of lifestyle as a dream and, with them being an ordinary family before fame, I'm sure they did as well so when they saw the possibility of getting that kind of lifestyle they did bad choices for their kids, but it's not like they did it purposefully, they were probably overwhelmed by the situation as well

Something that I can’t appreciate more is how the staff behind the Bluey tv show keep the children voice actors identities secret. They know how predatory the industry is and wants to keep those kids away from stardom.
i really question their parents morals. they see how much this is all affecting their children and they don’t seem to care that much. if my child was having this much anxiety over things that could be controlled i would take them out of the situation immediately. they are being filmed having panic attacks and mental breakdowns but it’s fine because it’ll give them sympathy and more money?? the entire family is basically financially dependent on charli and they’ve dug themselves too deep to just back out of everything. nobody is standing up for charli or dixie and that is so sad
the dad was (idk if he still is) bringing in a lot of money for their family. before Charli blew up they lived in a big house and Charli went to a good school plus dixie was on her way to college I think. if the parents had any sympathy for their children they would tell them to just stop posting.... they'll be fine without it. Charli has made enough money to support herself for a long time. fame is not worth their mental health
Taking them out of the situation would probably just create more drama leading to worse anxiety and poorer mental health. the parents deciding to cut them off from the world all of a sudden would probably upset the girls and the fans and their friends and the media and really wouldn’t be productive at all. There really isn’t a solution, especially not one that’s achievable by their parents since you can’t undo fame and they’re probably already under so many contracts. And I don’t think charli or Dixie wants to quit since they have so many benefits and opportunities so if their parents forced them to that would also take a toll on their mental health and probably wouldn’t help it at all. Also in the series they do seem pretty concerned with the amount of work their children are doing and I’m pretty sure charli and Dixie offered to help pay for the house since they say that the parents never really wanted to move to LA in the first place but charli and Dixie figured out the logistics and begged them to until they said yes
I agree with Drew's statement of being "mid-tier famous". If I were to be an actor, I'd like to be B-list. Someone like Bruce Campbell. Generally loved by the public, but not in the spotlight constantly.
there was a comedian who said that he wanted to be the drummer from coldplay. You get to do what you love, be rich and successful. But i dare anyone to name each member of coldplay off the top of your head right now.
The parents hired the agents. The agents are just the buffer vehicle for the authority the parents can’t execute themselves otherwise it would completely ruin their parent/ child relationship, Dixie and Charlie would see them as their bosses. 14 million dollar home and only one way to pay for it. The parents get to have their cake (money made from the success of their children) and eat it too (maintain stable relationships)
Exactly what I was thinking. In Dixies case, she is old enough to make her own decisions. But Charlie is still young. It's such a horrible thing to make your child feel pressured to slave work because their parents quit their jobs.
i think its their fault for even thinking of profiting off of their kids in the first place, they should've just put all the money into the kid's savings.
@@mothman4672 the parents basically are their bosses because in the end they have the authority over their child's career and life. they're terrible parents, and bosses.

It's so clear that they don't see her as a person that they need to foster and help grow, but as a money making machine that they need to pump for all its worth.
absolutely horrible "so how do you feel about your 2021" more like "so how do you feel about the 2021 I made to make money regardless of your well-being". Hate it so much... its the mentality of: as long as your alive your fine and if your fine you make money. If you have time to cry you have time to make money. absolutely disgusting.
It’s fucking horrifying, and this kind of sudden fame has been documented to lead to severe addiction issues in later life. Fucking Drew Barrymore was a coke addict at 8 years old.
It sucks that these parents saw their children blowing up and simply ran with it and exploited and continue to exploit them for money rather than protect them and make sure they’re ok with all of this.
They're not exploiting them, there's probably a pressure on both girls to rack that money in without having their parents tell them anything. Just the fact that they see their parents happy makes them go through this. Is it good? HELL NO, are they old enough to realize it? HELL NO, does it take away from the parents' responsability? HELL NO. But don't forget that money makes the world go round and in North America (the root of capitalism), it certainely doesn't help. It's more of a "most parents would do this", not just hers, many, many famous children's parents were exploited be it with intent or not.
The parents aren't the ones exploiting the children here. The flock of vultu- I mean, _managers_ circling around the family are. They're very good at convincing parents that this is all best for their children; meanwhile, the managers care only as much as said children are profitable.
@@TheLastEgg08 Exactly this! It's one of the most pernicious things about capitalism - it ends up being the reason for a lot of really, really bad things, but unless one knows to look for it, it's not there

How she was unloading all this very real mental health issues she was experiencing because she was famous, only to have her therapist say something along the lines of “well my kids love you!” Like… hell no. I hope she can get a different therapist who actually works with her like she’s a normal teenager instead of a golden idol who’s supposed to be robotically happy at all times.
she should go to a psychiatrist, therapists are variable and most of them suck ass. I bounced from 2 therapists until I finally went to a psychiatrist who was way more expensive but honestly, the best decision i ever made
To touch on the psychologist vs psychiatrist debate- if you have the means, see both regularly. Psychologists in a general sense are there to hear you out and help you work through your issues in practical ways, psychiatrists are there to prescribe medication if/when they deem fit. Both avenues are helpful when working through mental and emotional issues. Similar to how physical therapy and pain medication help people get heal a broken bone.

People are hardcore praising Drew, but to me he's just showing normal human empathy. Maybe people just aren't used to seeing that? Not trying to bring Drew down, that's just my thought.
Dont think it's just his "empathy" people are praising. Drew is very intelligent and has a great way of articulating how he relates to the sisters struggles but also relates to the audience as well, and ends up seeming very down to earth. Not easy to do.
Empathy is hard to find on the internet these days when it comes to content about internet celebrities. There’s always a huge divide where they’re either seen as godsend idols or spoiled brats and not much in between. In this landscape where Charli and Dixie are constantly demonised just because people find them annoying, Drew offering an empathetic, objective perspective is rare. It’s easy to make fun of the sisters at their expense, and other commentary channels would take that easy route. Drew is not doing anything revolutionary, but it feels like he is in the current state of internet culture.
honestly this is just a weird form of modern child labor that’s not taken seriously cause “they don’t do anything but still make money!” as if they’re doing all of the stuff they’re doing and not being exploited by adults edit: kay i dont think y’all get what i mean, it is ridiculous that they make money from moving their arms a bit but the adults in their lives are making them do literally anything and everything to make money, acting, singing, writing, etc. these are things that takes other people years to achieve and they’re doing it all at once while having all of the pressure they get.

when charli's managers planned out her whole year it reminded me so much of like One Direction and Little Mix on how they are put with these strict managers, being told what to do and having the rest of their lives planned out at such a young age
The commentary on Dixie reminds me of how far Rebecca Black has come; it’s only in recent years that she has found her voice and “proved the haters wrong” with her music career. Maybe Dixie can get there one day but she’s currently in her “Friday phase” in many ways
Solid gold take. It's baffling how people can cry 'Free Britney' and talk about what child actors like the Olsen twins and Jeanette McCurdy went though....while also mocking young people like the D'Amelios
I don't actually think it's baffling. If Drew didn't point this out, a lot of people wouldn't think so. Conceptual connection is a difficult thing, and I think we should appreciate how pensive he is being.
10:34 I think in general, the internet tends to hate literal children for no reason at all. I don't really know who this family is, but as you said, people will root for a child to fail because??? They are a teen who made a not so good song??? The internet will declare them public enemy number 1. They will send so much hate and vitriol towards them for no good reason. Setting our calendars back 11 years, it's exactly what happened with Rebecca Black's Friday. Bad song, but did this actual 13 year old deserve all the bullying she got for it? Adults who mock kids like this are pathetic, they are actual scum.
Not exclusively children, but other than that, yeah. I totally get being upset that they got popular while being talentless, that’s fine, that’s genuine, fair criticism, but anything past that is just harassment and sickening to see
I remember getting into an argument with a friend about Rebecca Black right after that song came out. I found the song really annoying but I thought the hate she was getting was too much, my friend was like, "nah, fuck that girl, she recorded the song she deserves what she gets." and I'm like, "...she's like, thirteen. Did you never do anything embarrassing and annoying when you were thirteen?" I am so goddamn glad social media didn't really exist until I was like thirteen or so and I wasn't allowed to get any sort of account until I was fifteen.
Been saying this for years, people keep complaining about teenage shows casting adults to play teens, but I think teens should go to school, get their first kiss in private, be a damn teen and not be in front of a camera working all day.
About the adults playing teens discourse. People also argue that a lot of these shows just misrepresent teens' lives while making the underage characters do some really questionable stuff. If Hollywood wants to see younger people get it on so bad they could just make the characters college age. They just choose not to for some reasons.
I agree, but most people say that their *portrayal* of teenage life is wrong So much party, drugs and bs which happens rarely in reality. (side note : I like k drama for this reason. The whole story revolve only about chemistry and bonding of characters. Subtle and beautiful storyline)
This is why I love Drew. He's an understanding, selfless person. He could be simply mocking nonstop the series, he could be just another logic-less hater on the sea of hate that fame brings. But no, he keeps reason. He analyses the situation and tries to explain to those who may not get how hard things can be come, even if you have all those resources and reach. He's not just a funny man that berates people, he's a funny man that tries to understand people. It's really wholesome.
The songwriting thing resonated with me. There's a saying that I've heard in my writing class that you have to write 100 bad songs before you write your first good song. I've written lyrics every night for over a year, and honestly they're all bad. But nobody's seen any of the crappy ~380 songs. Dixie is getting that experience, going through the process of writing those first songs... but in front of hundreds of millions of people. That must be terrifying.
honestly- i can’t think of anything *more* horrifying and their ages. if my failures during adolescence were broadcast to hundreds of millions of people, it would ruin me mentally for a very *very* long time.
Plus she probably has a bunch of people on her team kissing up to her and lying to her about how good the songs are cuz they know it'll make money either way, then she goes on the internet to see millions of people hating on what she was (probably) told was an amazing song by the people closest to her. The trust issues I would get...
She would be much better off lead singing for band that has completely ghost written songs tbh. She has a voice and an audience. Why waste time with terrible lyrics lol
Is it just me who got reminded of the scene in the movie "The Little Prince," where the girls mom shows her her entire year, down to the minutes she spent for lunch to her daughter? I got chills seeing the scene because... its something that happens in real life apparently and its so depressing and uncomfortable. I hope the girls get a break and are happy and stable with themselves soon.
And not even just her parents. She said her parents and her entire team. She's not their employer. If she quits everyone can get a new job. It's crazy that she has this mindset and it makes me think someone told her this.
So dramatic. The family has been millionaires way before their daughters discovered tiktok. I personally know a cousin of the family. They are LOADED. Don’t believe what these tiktok teens say in attempts to drum up sympathy for themselves.
They've tried to make Dixie a model, an actress, a youtube talk show host and now a singer. Like it's ok to just be regular?? its ok to admit u don't have to have a profitable social media friendly skill.

The "I don't feel sorry for them because they're rich" sentiment goes straight out the window when we're talking about children- human beings historically not in control of their life, still developing mentally and emotionally, known to be easily taken advantage of. I feel terrible for these kids because no amount of money undoes the impact of constant scrutiny and pressure to succeed in a career on a still developing brain.
I agree with you, I feel like I rarely sympathize with the rich, but anytime children are involved, my heart goes out to them. It's always the kids who wind up hurt because the adults in their lives messed up.
I think one of Drew's best commentary qualities is how human he is. Like he doesn't try to villainize what he's critiquing without evidence but instead let's the pros or cons show for themselves.
I'm gonna guess that's it's in comparison to other commentary channels, which seems pretty sad that something as common as that is a rarity in other channels
I get that university/college isn't for everyone so I can kinda understand why Dixie didn't want to go, but I feel like it would have given Dixie a good opportunity to find herself away from her sister and her family. Maybe she would have discovered something she was actually passionate about instead of having to publicly fail everytime I never got the vibe she was actually passionate about acting or singing even though she said so herself
at the very least, since she says she is passionate, she could go to some kind of performing art school to get away from the spotlight. shes not really the best at either so going to a school would not only help her do better at what she loves but also would give her time away :/

cr1tikal has a video where he talks about his feelings on college, and he makes the point that everyone should go to college, not for an educational or career reason, but because it's the first and last time in a lot of peoples lives where they can actually figure out who they are and make their own decisions without real consequences

The idea of people becoming famous before they have a talent to market, and then being forced to develop a skill that takes years to forge in maybe a month is something that I've never heard verbalised but have been made aware of so many times.
The show seems hypocritical within itself almost, like it’s displaying how much stress and anxiety and pressure they’re dealing with by constantly being seen by the entire world... but like the show is doing exactly that as well.
Well, at least the managers hit the nail on the head with their goals for the show. People are way more likely to sympathize with the D'Amelios after watching the show. So probably less hate and more money for them in the future. At least the managers are competent at what they do.
Don’t get me wrong I’d love to be rich as hell but I would never want to be famous. I value my privacy way too much. Also can’t imagine growing up in this time, in general, with social media and having every cringe moment on the internet forever. I had MySpace at like 15-16 but it was on a much smaller scale. If there are child labor laws for actors, and protections put in place that they keep the money they earn, there should be extensions to these kid influencers on tiktok and youtube. These kids need protection from greed.
whenever I hear something about ryan's toy review and how much money he earns, I feel sad; that poor kid has had his childhood stolen by his parents greed for money, and no matter how many times his parents say that he enjoys making videos (which is essentially work) it will never sit right with me
There should be a law that protects children from situations like this. Cos parents that push their children into this and leech off them, giving their children a parental role in providing for the family, gives me the creeps.
I heard somewhere this family was quite well off prior to the girls fame, obviously not as rich as they are now. In this particular case, I don’t think the parents pushed fame or celebrity on to their children, it just sort of happened through tiktok, so in most cases I’d agree with parents pushing children to fame to live off their children is very gross, but I don’t think that’s what happened here. I think the parents went along with this because they didn’t want their children to miss out on an opportunity to be set for life before they hit 20 years old, but I’m sure the girls are feeling the full weight of their fame. It was Charli herself that put her in the spotlight, not her parents, unlike with family vlog channels, where young children get thrust into fame without their consent.

Parts of the UK, France specifically is working on a program that allows children and teens to work as influencers but they have to get their hours approved BY THE COUNTY- not their parents- so there’s less of a chance of overworking or exploring their kids for views.
I'm wondering how they're going to set their hours because influencers do a broad range of things. Shoots for Instagram pictures, meetings with brands, filming, editing and then uploading videos etc.
The way their entire year is planned out for them sounds so overwhelming. It's like they know once they're done, there's another binder waiting for them :/
To be fair our lives are all planned out in binders, they’re just full of question marks and budgeting so you can eat the next day. It's really concerning how their parents aren't doing much to help them too. If I saw my kids practically breaking down everyday crying about how much stress and anxiety they're under I would definitely try my best to cut things down to the point where everything would be much easier to handle. It's also the idea of if your kid has the chance to do something they "like at the start" that makes them enough money they won't ever have to worry and possible a career they enjoy. The girls deserve a say and to make choices on their own but at the same time, they can't possible see how bad this in full. I don't think the parents evil but definitely neglectful
They aren’t reliant on their teenager……
It’s awful watching that clip of Dixie having an actual nervous breakdown. The parents seemed so disingenuous and bizarre, like they had no idea how to comfort their child as a parent.
Her parents were thinking: Yes kiddo. Keep crying. Give this show more popularity.
honestly, i feel bad for them. like not BAD BAD, but i watched the show and it feels like they were forced to make this show. and if not forced, it seemed like they were forced to really force out their problems as “drama” on the shows, and on the show i can see their actual stress that they have, and in one of the last episodes charli really touches on the hate that she gets, like she’s 17 and gets so much hate for just doing dances. charli really seems like she’s smart and she’s genuine. she doesn’t go around wearing gucci and all this shit, she seems down to earth. i really do, (ik this is stereotypical), but i think it’s the parents fault. when Dixie was having a mental breakdown the parents was more concerned ab the show than her. i think 100% of the cringe stuff and the things that no one likes is the managers and the parents fault, and charli is only 17, she’s 100%. like the haters are so stupid, all of her hate comments are either saying “it’s okay you can take down ur BLM profile picture” which, if she didn’t care ab BLM SHE WOULDVE NEVER MADE IT THAT, she’s only 17, she can support movements, and that she can’t dance and she does tiktok dances, but she’s been doing completive dances since she was 4. like she gets more hate than fucking Zoe Laverne who dated a 13 year old and got preggo by a trump supporter, and the other self obsessed tiktok stars. like it’s really sad.
well theyre conservatives so
It's a clip that shouldn't even exist in the first place, they shouldn't have even recorded it. She was breaking down and they put it on film. That's gross

At a certain point, what is the line between letting your kids have fun on tiktok and forcing them to do brand deals/make tiktoks in order to support your family financially? i really question their parents morals. they see how much this is all affecting their children and they don’t seem to care that much. if my child was having this much anxiety over things that could be controlled i would take them out of the situation immediately. they are being filmed having panic attacks and mental breakdowns but it’s fine because it’ll give them sympathy and more money?? the entire family is basically financially dependent on charli and they’ve dug themselves too deep to just back out of everything. nobody is standing up for charli or dixie and that is so sad
the dad was (idk if he still is) bringing in a lot of money for their family. before Charli blew up they lived in a big house and Charli went to a good school plus dixie was on her way to college I think. if the parents had any sympathy for their children they would tell them to just stop posting.... they'll be fine without it. Charli has made enough money to support herself for a long time. fame is not worth their mental health
I also feel like charli wants to delete all her accounts but her parents is stoping her.

The parents hired the agents. The fact that their parents didn’t get them off of the app when it started to affect them this much kinda shows that they just see them as an income at this point. Can’t imagine letting my 16 yr old have constant breakdowns because of the internet

I’ve watched my 3 kids navigate social media, and the second they start comparing themselves to others, or hating themselves because of what others say, or even hyping themselves because of how many likes and positive comments they get, I explain how FUCKING STUPID it is to let other people, mostly strangers, dictate how you feel. Then I’m like, hey y’all each find a recipe and go to the store and get the ingredients and let’s put on some music and cook a meal and dance together.
@@ejsafara456 bait
Empathy is hard to find on the internet these days when it comes to content about internet celebrities. There’s always a huge divide where they’re either seen as godsend idols or spoiled brats and not much in between. In this landscape where Charli and Dixie are constantly demonised just because people find them annoying, Drew offering an empathetic, objective perspective is rare. It’s easy to make fun of the sisters at their expense, and other commentary channels would take that easy route. Drew is not doing anything revolutionary, but it feels like he is in the current state of internet culture.

honestly this is just a weird form of modern child labor that’s not taken seriously cause “they don’t do anything but still make money!” as if they’re doing all of the stuff they’re doing and not being exploited by adults
edit: kay i dont think y’all get what i mean, it is ridiculous that they make money from moving their arms a bit but the adults in their lives are making them do literally anything and everything to make money, acting, singing, writing, etc. these are things that takes other people years to achieve and they’re doing it all at once while having all of the pressure they get.
"child labor"
they make tiktok dances and got their own show? they aren't being made to work in a salt mine or stitch shoes. her anxiety is clearly caused by being on an online space, not her parents or anyone pressuring her. i saw no evidence of anyone pressuring her to do anything while watching the show. she's 17 years old and people are acting like she doesn't have the mental capacity to choose things for herself lmfao. legally she's a child but i'm sure she has the brainpower to say yes and no to things. child labor is Ryans Toy Reviews because he is literally too young to realize what he's doing. Charli isn't so i don't get why people are acting like she's being forced to make content. everyone has detractors and online haters and that can and will affect someone's mental state. it's awful and shouldn't happen but i struggle to see how this in any way is child labor. child labor infers some sort of physical or mental labor that is taxing on the child. the only mentally taxing thing to Charli is online trolls and that isn't anyones fault. the only physically taxing thing is actually doing the dances. i just honestly don't get the pity party for famous people simply for being famous. fame comes with hate and pressure. it always has
i also don't see how Charli is being exploited. she has a manager, does he just force her to take show deals without asking her? probably not lol. she no doubt has a say in any projects she does and any videos she puts online. and i can't find any online evidence that her family or managers have taken advantage of her by stealing money or charging exorbitant fees. so i really don't see how she's being exploited. i'm sure Charli has more agency in her own career than you all are making it seem
absolutely i feel like if not for the pressure of their parents they wouldn't have continued doing social media or they would've at least took it easy... its clear that the parents want the fame too (maybe even more than dixie and charli) i mean making a whole reality show about the family? feels like they're trying to benefit off of their children's fame🤷♀️
@@inyrui I started out disagreeing and ending up somewhat agreeing 😂
But one thing I'd like to say is, you have to see that she didn't ask for this lifestyle at the beginning. But now she has made certain commitments (like to her audience, her future prospects, brand deals and all) which she can't just drop. She's in the situation where she can say no to stuff but that would lead to missing potentially good opportunities. Like what if as Dree said, she's earning for the family now? Isn't she feeling obligated to continue to do so? This is mentally taxing job. Child labour.
@@inyrui drew went over all this in the video. There are people that have literally planned out years of their lives for them. About the adults playing teens discourse. People also argue that a lot of these shows just misrepresent teens' lives while making the underage characters do some really questionable stuff.

I think one of Drew's best commentary qualities is how human he is. Like he doesn't try to villainize what he's critiquing without evidence but instead let's the pros or cons show for themselves.
Jesus Christ he’s not a saint it’s pretty common human behaviour, he ain’t gonna shag you
I'm gonna guess that's it's in comparison to other commentary channels, which seems pretty sad that something as common as that is a rarity in other channels

I get that university/college isn't for everyone so I can kinda understand why Dixie didn't want to go, but I feel like it would have given Dixie a good opportunity to find herself away from her sister and her family. Maybe she would have discovered something she was actually passionate about instead of having to publicly fail everytime
I never got the vibe she was actually passionate about acting or singing even though she said so herself
at the very least, since she says she is passionate, she could go to some kind of performing art school to get away from the spotlight. shes not really the best at either so going to a school would not only help her do better at what she loves but also would give her time away :/
yep, sch is a good excuse to hide away from the world and you can make up excuses that you were busy even if you weren’t. she’s got the money for it so why not try a course? and she can drop out anytime she wants if she doesn’t like it and not have to face financial repercussions, and just try something else again. only thing is that because she’s so famous everyone in sch in probably gonna know who she is.
cr1tikal has a video where he talks about his feelings on college, and he makes the point that everyone should go to college, not for an educational or career reason, but because it's the first and last time in a lot of peoples lives where they can actually figure out who they are and make their own decisions without real consequences
Unless you're studying law or going to be a doctor, there's no use for a university. You're only going to be indoctrinated into Marxism and come home hating your parents.
@@216trixie lmaooooo okay
Yet again you’ve created a balanced, respectful, and honest examination of something most people would just write off as terrible and move on. I think one of your strengths is having a range of style types: sharply funny, extremely angry (which is somehow even funnier), and truly thoughtful commentary. Love it all.
He is the best❤️
Agreed. That's why he's my favorite UA-cam commentary channel
Well said!
You nailed it👌
i like your big words, chloe
Such thoughtful commentary. Thank you for reminding us that these people are kids.
The idea of people becoming famous before they have a talent to market, and then being forced to develop a skill that takes years to forge in maybe a month is something that I've never heard verbalised but have been made aware of so many times.
Exactly
Exactly
The show seems hypocritical within itself almost, like it’s displaying how much stress and anxiety and pressure they’re dealing with by constantly being seen by the entire world... but like the show is doing exactly that as well.
RIGHT its ironic... the show had its own binder for the year.. OBVIOUSLY this is a huuuge stressor as well
Exactly!
Well, at least the managers hit the nail on the head with their goals for the show. People are way more likely to sympathize with the D'Amelios after watching the show. So probably less hate and more money for them in the future. At least the managers are competent at what they do.
Makes drews case even stronger
i don’t envy charlie and dixie. i think if i was in their position i would just have like never-ending panic attacks.
It’s gotta be lonely at the top
I actually felt really bad for them watching this
Don’t get me wrong I’d love to be rich as hell but I would never want to be famous. I value my privacy way too much.
Also can’t imagine growing up in this time, in general, with social media and having every cringe moment on the internet forever. I had MySpace at like 15-16 but it was on a much smaller scale. That was pretty much it
Charli admitted that she does have dozens of panic attacks a day
They didn't have to take anything
The parents are equally to blame for this just as much as the managers.
If there are child labor laws for actors, and protections put in place that they keep the money they earn, there should be extensions to these kid influencers on tiktok and youtube. These kids need protection from greed.
whenever I hear something about ryan's toy review and how much money he earns, I feel sad; that poor kid has had his childhood stolen by his parents greed for money, and no matter how many times his parents say that he enjoys making videos (which is essentially work) it will never sit right with me
I dont think the boomer law makers know what tik tok is or know how youtube works.
A lot of child labor laws don't apply to social media stars too. Their parents don't have to save anything for them and can take all of it.
@@ladidaohoh3168 That is what is happening here. The parents bought a godamn 15 million dollar house with the money that the sister made. That's called exploiting your children.
@@oxxy6678 literally Charli brought up in the series that she wanted to move, so I'm assuming she did not care. Perhaps money is not everything to her. Or maybe she gave her parents the money.
@@asandy4555 So you just assuming they consulted their 16 year old daughter in wasting 15 million dollars that she made on a house for them..? Seems like a reach but you and charlie probably besties
So Charli gets rich and famous overnight > why does that immediately mean the family has to move into a huge ass expensive home which they might not be able to afford anymore if say, Charli’s fame subsides or she decides not to do entertainment anymore because she’s literally still a child????? (She’s 17.) Her parents are responsible in my honest opinion. That’s a lot to put on your kid.
100%
They were already rich
Is not like they lived in the middle of nowhere aswell, the family lived only an hour outside of New York City, so they could’ve gotten the same or similar opportunities if the family stayed back home and just let them have a bit of a more normal life (until they graduated high school at the very least). Really no need to uproot yourself like that if you care about your kids well being.
@@demilevine2458 I’m so tired of hearing they were just a “normal every day family.” They were literally already filthy rich and set for life. These people have never had to struggle

As a teenager, like, around Charli's age teenager, I couldn't imagine the stress she faces every day. I can barely handle all of my school work. Hell, I can barely get through math class without a breakdown.
Hell… I’m 22 rn and sometimes get stressed just by the thought of going to work 😂 Idk how Charli manages everything
The older I get the less appealing fame sounds. I now have zero privacy and everything I do gets picked apart even after I die? Yea no thanks
i'm 15 and my biggest concern is biology homework... i can't imagine what she's going through. it's why i never got the unnecessary hate and anger older people feel towards her. it has always felt immature and honestly kind of toxic. i don't get why people concern themselves with so much negativity.
Hang in there avery, I’m slightly older and life gets better than maths class. One day, though, you’ll look back on HS fondly.
I’d rather have Charlis life than school :/ I would maybe do things a bit different to be less stressed but I would love that life
as a singer, i think it would be insanely stressful to learn how to sing good in front of millions of people. you're supposed to make mistakes and learn from them but if you do in front of 50,000,000 people you'll get hated on or made fun of.

Holy shit bots are taking UA-cam too now?
I've never seen Drew just sit down and talk about anything serious like a human being. And honestly, what a good talk. He had really insightful perspectives that I didn't even think about, and helped change my thoughts on these literal teens. It was a great contrast with his normal goofy videos, and I'm prouder now to say that he's a favorite youtuber of mine. Respect earned man.
His jaystation video was kinda like this
Parts of the UK, France specifically is working on a program that allows children and teens to work as influencers but they have to get their hours approved BY THE COUNTY- not their parents- so there’s less of a chance of overworking or exploring their kids for views.
Is there a link to an article or a petition or something because I support it 100%
This was such a jarring thing to read and comprehend, we live in such a bizarre time rn
I wonder how they will enforce it? Hmm
I'm wondering how they're going to set their hours because influencers do a broad range of things. Shoots for Instagram pictures, meetings with brands, filming, editing and then uploading videos etc.

Their parents are the biggest concern here it totally looks like they're exploiting their children for as much profit as they can make. Also, hope that the sisters can get through this stressful period of their lives. I look forward to seeing them showcase their talent on their own will in the future
I loved the way you wrote it.
their isn’t much they can do the called off meetings dixie is grown they don’t have control over her and charli is 17 and they can’t help her unless charli can communicate what she needs
Probably the parents aren't prepared for all of this either. I agree and would do the same that you said, but I have some sort of understanding on social media branding because I'm gen z, they don't and even if they hire people to educate them on that to help their daughters, they'll probably gaslight them into keep exploiting their kids.
