I think the facial expression shown at 27:22 is subtly some of the best acting of the entire film. Joker always maintains this attitude that he doesn't care about anything and he's just having fun. But when he tries to prove that everyone else is just like him and they prove him wrong, he is deeply affected. You can see pain and regret in his eyes and there's a little smile as he tries to shrug it off, but it's not a convincing smile. Everything this man believes just blew up in his face and he's very alone in these few seconds.

    • @Jack_80

i don't get why so many people think he gave them the detonators to blow up their own boat. that makes no sense for the character, he's not going to punish the one who proves him right by pushing the detonator. also he would probably want the boat that survived living the rest of their lives killing all of those people, which wouldn't happen if they just blew themselves up. i don't doubt for a second there were no tricks to this and he would have let the boat survive that blew up the other boat.

So in the comics there were 3 phases of the Joker, early on he was a gangster, later he became the goofball villain then he became an agent of chaos. It is said the different actors have portrayed different aspects. Cesar Romero portrayed the goofball in the 1960s tv series, Jack Nicholson went with the gangster & finally Heath Ledger did the agent of chaos, which Jared Leto attempted to reprise. Mark Hamil's version spanned all the different visions of the Joker.

First I did not get the ending too. I understood it much later. The point of Batman sacrificing himself planting himself as the killer instead of Harvey is so Harvey remains uncorruptible in the eyes of Gotham. For Gotham Harvey Dent was a true hero and a beacon of hope, while Batman was still seen just as some crazy vigilante thus Gordon saying ,,he is the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now" The whole thing was to cover up, that in fact Joker was right after all. Everybody can fall into darkness with the right circumstances. Even the best of the best... Pure good souls. So Batman took the fall so Harvey can remain a hero after his death instead of dying as a murderer, as that could break a lot of peoples spirits and crime would rise even more, chaos and anarchy would ensue and Joker would won.

23:45 considering the track record of the joker, it’s safe to assume that those were indeed the detonators for THEIR OWN bombs.
Think about it - if the criminals blow themselves up, then society would think that the civilians blew them up and society would shun them causing divides.
If the civilians blew themselves up, who would believe the criminals boat they they DIDNT actually kill the civilians.
It fits perfectly with the jokers methods of creating discord and chaos.
Combined with his established habitual lying etc…

I'm with Blue on the ending, I didnt like that Batman chose to take the blame for Harvey's wake of carnage. But I get it. In the public's eye, Harvey is the District Attorney. He is the public figure for law and justice in Gotham. For him to flip and cast the law aside might do some serious damage to the morale of Gotham. Criminals would become even bolder amongst the chaos, good citizens would become more fearful. People can do desperate things when they're afraid. If Batman takes the blame for the crimes, hes already a divisive vigilante in the public eye. He'd become an outcast, but Harvey's reputation would remain, and hes the symbol of the Justice System in Gotham.

This was the first thing I ever saw related to Batman (in terms of movies, cartoons, comics, etc.) I knew almost nothing about Batman and absolutely nothing about the Joker before seeing this movie. The only reason I originally watched this was because I really liked Heath Ledger and he was in it as a villain, which I hadn't seen him do before. With zero prior knowledge of the Joker, Heath Ledger's portrayal fascinated me so much that I HAD to see more of the character. It led me to the Animated Series, the old Batman movies from the 80s, and eventually "Batman Begins" (I hadn't realized "The Dark Knight" was the second part of a trilogy until I was halfway through the Animated Series). Heath's performance was incredible. This will always be THE Joker in my eyes, although I have a lot of fondness for Joker from The Animated Series too. One of my favorite villains of all time. An incredible performance. So glad you enjoyed it, Blue! ✌🤓

Did you ever have like whiplash going from the Nolan films to the more gothic, fantasy, timeless showcase of Batman? My friend was introduced to Batman with these films as well but when he went to play the Arkham Games (I let him play Arkham Knight) he was so freaked out with all the Meta Humans, Depiction of Gotham City, How dark and gothic the setting was along with the timeless setting where Gotham had blimps, retro 1980s police cars, Retro poster, typewriters, and a very Analog meets Digital look and feel. To him this was a massive whiplash from the more Chicago modern day setting of The Dark Knight and the overall lack of fantasy or Sci Fi powers. He just had no idea that this is how Batman is depicted in alot of renditions.

      @BubblyRainbows 9 місяців тому +1

@@thegrayghost2148 Not really? I've never played the Arkham games, so I'm not sure what the difference in the settings are exactly. But of course, when I want from "The Dark Knight" to the animated version I expected it to be less serious and more cartoony, and then when I went to the old 80s movies, I expected a more 80s feel since I've seen tons of 80s movies from my dad's DVD collection since I was a kid. Plus, I saw tons of Marvel movies before I saw this, so I was used to the "normal" characters like Hawkeye and Black Widow being mixed in with Thor and The Hulk. I guess I had enough all-around superhero exposure to adjust okay.
The downside for me was that I was introduced to the Joker as a dark, serious, intelligent force of chaos, so in the first 80s "Batman," I had a harder time adjusting to that version of the Joker. I just couldn't take him seriously as a villain. It felt like they wanted the chaos, but not the intelligence, menace, or darkness, so everything he did was just dumb and silly, without any kind of cohesive strategy behind it. Just... "This seems nonsensical and lawless. Let's do it. For what purpose? Uh... Well... Because chaos!"

Heath Ledger performance was outstanding. To prepare he locked himself in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices - it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. He landed more in the realm of a psychopath - someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts. He watched movies like a clockwork orange to prepare. He never broke character even when not filming. Batman won’t kill or use guns but won’t hesitate to maim someone

Since I just watched your Batman Begins reaction last night - you probably didn't see my glowing post about your reaction. Just starting your Dark Knight adventure but figured I'd repost my Batman Begins post to let people know how amazing you are: I was absolutely blown away by (your Batman Begins) reaction. Loved your opening and excitement about your new set. Not only are you mesmerizing, but your enthusiasm was so infectious and your analysis was spot on. I was particularly impressed by watching your emotional changes that came through more so due to the edits. One second - your beautiful smile. The next second- the most intense look on your face. Your attraction to Scarecrow was also adorable. Cillian Murphy made another movie that same year called Red Eye you would enjoy with Rachel McAdams in which he plays another bad guy. He seems to get an award nomination for everything he's in beginning with his 28 Days Later which was a sequel. He tends to start out in sequels as he was also a Hollywood Critics Award winner for A Quiet Place 2. Of course, in Batman Begins he's in the original, but, unfortunately for you, not the sequel. 😁 He also worked with Christopher Nolan again in Inception. Batman Begins was a game-changer in Super Hero movies. I believe it was a tone-setter for Iron Man and the beginning of the MCU. Not sure if you saw Joker which, to me, is the best performance of all time by Joaquin Phoenix. But Heath Ledger's historic turn as Joker in Dark Knight set the tone for that. BOTH won Oscars. You're so genuine and authentic for such a beautiful girl. Can't wait for your Dark Knight reaction.

I enjoyed this reaction a lot, your expressions just tell so much about how this movie is meant to come across. However no The Joker never had a wife, he is just insane by DC and more. There is a lot of stuff out there to Joker's character. If some people do the work they will understand a bit more about him and what he goes through. However for now it would be shrouded in darkness due to speculation because of the many adaptations. I am happy you enjoyed the movie and cannot wait to see your next reaction for the Batman movies. I watched a documentary about Batman. One of the creators said that The Joker is Batman equal. Which is why Batman hasn't killed him, though he's had many opportunities .
The Joker is just as good at what he does as The Batman. Its kinda Shakespearian, Batman won't kill Joker not because of his code but because he knows, killing Joker will send him psychologically to a place he may not want to be.
But who is Bruce/Batman? He never really got help for the trauma as a kid. If Joker is insane, Batman is knocking on that door. They say geniuses aren't far from being insane, that describes Bruce/ Batman perfectly imo. Joker's already insane, which is why he's also a genius. But Joker won't kill Batman either, he's always expressed some crazy need for Batman.
"I think you and I are destined to do this forever." Batman is a punchline to a joke that The Joker never gets tired of hearing. Batman Lore is the best in all of comics, I love it. ❤️

I'm glad that Joker's origin is a mystery but there are some great fan theories. One theory is that Joker is an Afghan/Iraq war veteran who went AWOL. He was a Green Beret, Navy Seal, or Spec Ops, who became a POW and was tortured. When he was finally released or escape, he became like Rambo. That is how Joker is able to operate with military precision, set up bombs and booby traps, put an IED inside a dude, and use a variety of different guns. Knives are a standard tool given to soldiers. Essentially a default weapon.
Another theory is that Joker is actually Kevin from the Home Alone franchise. His family was on Flight 93 when it was hijacked on 9-11. Kevin broke down mentally and became the opposite of Batman, using his intelligence to create chaos. He tells all these different stories about the scars because he suffers from DID which is caused by traumatic events.

That wasn't just some vehicle set on fire, it was a fire trucl. I do hope you watch the Pitch Meetings by Ryan George for these movies, they are hilarious.
This isn't just a trilogy, it has a animated series under the name Gotham Knight that's set between the first and second movie, just like the Matrix trilogy had the Animatrix. It's skippable, but also enjoyable to watch if you have it available, sure, but there are things that are easier to do in comics and anime than in live action.

26:31 - *_THAT is exactly what the story SHOULD have been: This movie is amazingly good and has so few flaws, but if there is one flaw in it I oh so wish I could go back in time and change, it is that whole "This city has shown you how good it is/you are alone" message which really doesn't fit with neither Batman nor the Joker. The Joker (Especially THIS iteration of the joker) absolutely WOULD have given each boat their own detonator and would have laughed with glee as one of them blew itself up, thinking they were going to survive, while the other watched in horror knowing that they came within a hair of blowing themselves up (And it should have been the boat full of "Innocent civilians" that should have blown itself up while the boat of "Hardened Criminals" watched on and gawked at the brilliance and sadistic nature of the Joker._*
*_The rest of the story could have been easily adapted from there on with the Joker showing Batman that all people are indeed corruptible when the chips are down. Batman attacks and throws Joker down the building but then catches him, not wanting to break his rule, and then admonishes the Joker for having proven nothing as "loading the dice" against people does not prove them to be bad players and does not eliminate the good they do (Just as he chose to be good by sparing the Joker) and that people like himself and the people of Gotham would always be their to thwart the Joker an his sadistic plans; and that is when Joker brings up his ace in Harvey and the rest of the movie plays out the same._*
*_THAT would have been an even better ending and a much more proper one that keeps in line with both of their characters. Much Darker, yes. But this movie is called "The DARK Knight" after all!... Missed opportunity!_*

Batman had to take the fall otherwise all the people Dent had arrested would be released. Granted they probably could have just said it was one of Joker's goons who killed Harvey lol. As for the boats bit....just because one boat had criminals, doesn't mean they were all murderers, they could have been thieves, drug dealers, con men so on, they didn't want to kill anyone.

The fact that you did not agree with the final choice made by Batman and Gordon to lie to the public and let Harvey's legacy live on is exactly what Christopher Nolan intended... because the final film of the trilogy, 'The Dark Knight Rises', is about this very lie resurfacing and coming back to haunt them.
It's such a genius structure to a trilogy where the second film becomes a point so low in the story that the third film has to literally UNDO it. No other comic-book film or trilogy will ever come close to touching the philosophical discourse of The Dark Knight Trilogy. A true-blue Cinema Classic.

I remember the NONSENSE Heath got when it was announced that he was casted as the joker. Some only saw him as the pretty boy from Knight's tale. But mostly, it was because he was in Brokeback mountain. The latter reason is really hilarious because that movie was literally the reason why Nolan chose him in the first place. And Heath already broke out of the 'heartthrob' role in brokeback. Was geninuely intimidating when he was fighting and brawling with other ppl (the part where he threatened to punch his ex-wife is still one of the most terrifying scenes i've witnessed) . I was curious to see what Heath would be like as a villain after seeing Brokeback. You can imagine how hyped i was when he was casted as the joker.
And still, nothing could prepare me for how fantastic he was as the joker. Hard to believe he was only in the movie for like 30 mins total. He overshadowed everyone.
R.I.P Heath. Not only was he a great actor, but he aspired to be a film director. And he's a DOPE person in real life. Really down to earth, humble, yet wasn't afraid to take a stand for what was right. Like when he refused to let his own friends make gay jokes. or when he turned down performing at the oscars because of the immature gay joke. He's the one celebrity i'll always mourn

I understand why Gordon and Batman make the choice that they agree to make at the conclusion of The Dark Knight to lie (essentially) in order to preserve an image.
And why Alfred makes the choice that HE does to "withold" the truth, in order to preserve an image as well.
I also absolutely get why it upsets you.
...And those points (Gordon & Batmans lie. Alfreds concealment. AND your/ the audiences deep dissaproval) are all kind of central motivating factors in the finale of the trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises.
"...Rises" is easily the least of the trilogy. Frankly, it's not nearly as concise nor engaging as the first two; with a sadly, less satisfying end to the whole arc than we may have hoped.......
ALL of that being said... It is STILL a GOOD movie!
With a lot of GREAT moments, very cool new (& old) characters, and a "solid" conclusion to the trilogy.
I can't wait for your reaction to it.

Batman Begins may be a better Batman film from it's tone, depiction of Gotham, deep origin story, and my personal favourite depiction of Bales Batman but Dark Knight is a great Christopher Nolan film and sequal. It does lack alot when it comes to the art direction and tone, Gotham basically looks like Chicago and Batman himself in terms of outfit is much more tame, Skinny Ninja look. So it did loss alot of the personality of the first film but Dark Knight is still great.
Is it the best Batman film? Personally no it's a great film, has a great story and writing but it falls flat on many elements that for me make a film a great Batman movie. The Batman, Batman 89, Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Begins, Under the Red Hood, Batman Year One these are better Batman movies nailing the tone, setting of Gotham, and depiction of The Batman while Dark Knight is a great Christopher Nolan with Batman in it. He tried to ground the world of Batman far too much in these sequels to the point that it lost so much of the personality from the comics. Man of Steel suffers from this as well for me but not as much. So this always felt more like a Crime Action Movie with Batman in it going after the Joker in Chicago.
I personally just never got why someone would want to treat the DC universe like our own world when it's not. DC has it's own history, cities, nations, and famous people. Gotham shouldn't be a stand in for any American city but Gotham City. Same with Metropolis as well. So it is a pain to see people treat Gotham as Chicago or New York.
But overall I'm glad you enjoy this film, hopefully you check out the Animated Batman stuff they're amazing and peak Batman.

Wow I thought I was the only person who felt this way. I LOVED Batman Begins, so I had very high expectations for The Dark Knight. But I initially hated TDK upon my first viewing. Everyone was like: "You're crazy. It's an amazing movie." It took me a second viewing to love it. I had to learn to like it for what it was, and not what I wanted it to be. Everything that it was lacking (art direction, Gotham looking like Chicago, lack of focus on Batman's journey, etc) had bothered me so much, but I had to learn to appreciate it for being more of a film noir rather than another superhero story.
