@Starscream91 Because it actually doesn't. It was only a decision of the director because he did not like Dante's personality in the first game. The same thing happened with the anime when Kobayashi stated that he didn't wanted a DMC3 Dante and preferred a cool and collected one that resmbled his DMC1 persona. There is no indication, evidence or glimpse that Dante may have depression, it is simply a stupid fan theory due to the multiple interpretations that the character has, that's all.

I did not change my argument, I'm just saying that I thing it's pretty absurd to try to give explanation to something that is not stated anywhere. DMC always shows Dante as character with a strong willpower, a fighter who is able to face adversity and who acepts destiny as it is. He didn't lost his humanity and broke bad like his brother did when they were childs, in DMC3 he was prepared to kill his own brother if it was necessary, in DMC1 he was ready to face Mundus even when he was outmatched, in the anime it's showed how he doesn't give a shit about the fact that humans or demons repudiate him because he's a half breed, he made and oath and he is faithful to it, etc. Those are traits from someone with a very strong personality who doesn't break easily, and Dante is shown as a character who can deal with anything due his way of being and his beliefs, it's one of his most recognisable features. The only time he had some kind of crisis was when he wanted to break apart from his past and origins and went under the allias Tony Redgrave, and that was retconed to some point after the release of DMC3.

Dante, the "main protagonist", says exactly 147 words in this entire game. For comparison with DMC3, Dante says more in just Mission 20 alone (155 words). Absolutely _dripping_ with charisma here, too, I have to say. (/s)

DMC2 : Best Atmosphere out of all of the games. Dark, gloomy, despair, full of anguish and agony and encaptures the sadness of the game. Also had amazingly great bloody palace mode which kept me playing again and again for a long time. DMC3 : Funnest Dante. Most changes to gameplay, added extremely variable replay value. Epic bosses, provided a good story and introduced alot more about Virgil, not to mention after beating the game on the higher difficulties you got to PLAY as him. Sick.
I agree with a lot of what you're saying but for atmosphere I'd honestly say DMC1 did it best the game felt so intense & dark there was a horror-esque element to it which the later games don't have (& i miss that) but imo DMC2 has the best enemies like the Savage Golem still to this day is one of my favorites also the DT & SDT designs are the best in this game like it looks so sick even Dante's design is really good it's not my number one but it's up there my favorite Dante design would definitely be DMC1 but DMC4's is really good too

So when I saw the notification for a comment I made five years ago on a vid with "Leon Kennedy" in the thumbnail, I was confused. I dont think you can hate on dantes character in this game. I believe that the reason he isnt his goofball lovable self is because by this point in his life hes been through a whole damn lot of loss. His Mother died, he barely got to know his father, he lost his brother to Mundus (someone who he hates more than anyone else in the entire series) and then had to KILL HIS OWN BROTHER who he loved very much, because there was no saving vergil from the corruption that made him nelo angelo. Combine that with the fact that he never got to see his own nephew (nero) grow up and you realize that damn by this point dante had a lot of hardships in his life. By 2 He could no longer keep up his happy persona and became darker and more serious.There may even be a tragedy that happens inbetween 4 and 2 we dont know about. Who knows, only time will tell.
jm42fun If you are into the lore, this was not always the case. They did respect or showed brother love towards each other here and there. Obscure as it is, the DMC reboot filled that gap a bit though. Even if brothers hate each other and try to kill each other, they will feel loss inside. Guessing you dont have a family?. :P

I was doing a DMC marathon (except the reboot) and IMO the progress was just like the typical life of a person growing up... DMC 3 - the hype of youth / sibling moments / adolescence or something like that / meeting your 1st crush (lady) DMC 1 - the pre-adulthood where you have to do your job like a responsible adult you should be / also the time you realize your own potential by achieveing things your parents wasn't able to do before (defeating mundus) / meeting your ideal woman (trish) / this is also the pre-depression time where in you just put your full attention at your job to earn for living DMC 2 - the post-depression period where you just do your job unmotivated but still dedicated / the time that you just do things asked for you without any complains because you're tired of their BS / meeting the very 1st woman who is interested in you (lucia), but left her because you are too depressed and don't want her to get attached to you at this point of your life DMC 4 - the point where you just enjoy your life and job to the fullest / the time where you regain your connection to your family and being a responsible uncle to your nephew (nero) / meeting your 1st crush and ideal girl again having closure to both of them as good friends and DMC 5 which concludes your own story and let the younger generations shine and guide them, Happy End etc... It's really amazing how Capcom develop Dante's character throughout the franchise like his ups and downs and more!

Dude I’m sorry but I cannot see Dante and Trish in a relationship even if and when DMC tries to paint the idea. Wouldn’t it be kinda weird to date a woman who looks identical to your dead mother? I kinda like the idea of Trish being a sort of voice of reason among everybody, giving off some maternal, parental or authority vibes on occasion among gun toters and Human-Demons descendants willing to tell someone off for screwing around without sacrificing the prospect of ultimately being her own character.
DMC2 isnt nearly as bad as people paint it to be. Its flawed, its too easy, but if you're looking for an entertaining hack n slash DMC2 is full of cool stuff. Twosome time which evolved into gunslinger style, wall running which turned into trickster style, best devil trigger in the series, Majin Devil trigger, Bloody palace, amulet system, dantes best outfit, awesome soundtrack, the list goes on
I’m gonna have to agree. The game wasn’t the best but it could have been worse. I also think some people overthink with their theories or ideas they have when it comes to explaining things like why Dante is more serious than witty or why we don’t see other characters like Trish after she becomes an ally in the first game and Vergil when his ultimate fate is left unresolved after fighting him three times in the first game. At worst, there is no explanation: DMC2 is just… incomplete, I suppose.

To be honest I understand that many people hate this game but come on, this is Dante too. A mature, serious Dante with a rich past on his back. In this game I kinda liked the total demonic atmosphere, Dante's strength, the Ultimate Devil Trigger and that he still had a bit of his cocky nature like how he finishes off Arius, talks with Matier and tricks everyone with his coin of making a decision based on "blind luck". He has seen everything therefore there's no one who would match him. The last boss fight with The Despair Embodied was great and cool. In this episode maybe he's overlevelled even Sparda too. I gave a chance for this game and didn't regret it. It's still and will be a part of a legendary series!
keep in mind; you are speaking in hindsight. When this game came out his "back story" was DMC1 and that was it, the game was a cheap and rushed cash in and the only reason it has such a rich backstory now is because the developers have been pretending it doesn't exist for a decade plus.

Dante was depressed in dmc1 already because of what occurred in DMC3 and the manga goes deeper into the past events of Dante and vergil and it shows how they suffered as children, also because of what occurred in dmc1 and in the anime, you can see how those events shaped him, eventually it got worse in dmc2, making him almost emotionless and meeting Nero in dmc4 helped him cope as in the beginning of dmc4, he was still in his depressed mood, hence how he seems almost emotionless. Dmc5, Dante got depressed but seeing Vergil after everything finally brought him back to his happy self once again. Also the manga occurs before DMC3. Hence the part where they say in the game "it's been a year since I've seen you" the manga occurs a year before DMC3. It gives you insight into how badly Dante and Vergil were mentally hurt. And how that spanned over the time. In the manga of DMC3. It goes deep into how Dante thought Vergil had died. He also saw his mom get killed from the place in which his mom hid him. And Dante knew of his father's fate. Vergil was actually being tormented and stabbed repeatedly by demons as he could do nothing but listen to the screams of his dying mother. Dante learned of this and this broke him mentally. In the manga, which takes place a year before DMC3. Dante suffers from a form of PTSD flashbacks. And he's less than honorable until DMC3. He's always been depressed. He also didn't expect Vergil's plan and he felt betrayed by Vergil. A line from the manga is "Vergil.... you're in cuhoots with the things that killed our mother and father?" This leads into DMC3. Dante always loved Vergil. But Vergil believed he was abandoned to be tortured and Dante thought he was dead, so he didn't know what to do about that. And you can see how this affected their relationship.
Thanks for posting! I remember this game as it was yesterday. I played the demo , but sadly i kind of missed it back i the day. I bought the HD Collection for PS3 and just started up with the first DMC. I am glad that they have made these HD collection, so that younger generations can see that they could made wonderful games in those days. The games nowadays ain´t nothing compared to the classics of the early 2000s. I was just in my mid teenage when this came out, but I sound like an old man :D On the other hand some say that there was no "Good Old Days". You just did not know of better back then.

I honestly love how much Dante's character changes through the series. In 3, he's a playful goofball, joking about anything and everything. Except the third fight with Vergil, where Dante knew he was the only thing between Vergil and Sparda's power. In 1, he feels guilty about losing Vergil to the demon world, but still manages to pull off a few insults ("Flock off, featherface!" will always stick in my head as the best DMC1 insult) In 4, something (maybe Trish) has revitalized his spirit, and he's become pretty damn smug. He doesn't bother making a quip before blasting Sanctus in the face, because he knows it'll go unnoticed. In 2, he's clearly matured a lot to the point where he doesn't feel he needs to say anything-his actions (and Rebellion) speak for him. Plus, he's become more good in general-he doesn't stop to think before putting Lucia in front of Arius. Then there's DmC: Devil May Cry, which we don't talk about too much. For a good reason, too.

This is actually the first game of Devil May Cry series I'd play on PS2 (after that I play all the series except the DMC 2013) I love Dante's costume design and his personality in DMC2.

Despite how flawed Devil May Cry 2 Is, I personally enjoyed playing it. The dark urban setting, Dantes seriousness, design, and the soundtrack is what I liked about DMC 2. A remake could fix the gameplay issues.
Ya know people bitch about Dante being more solemn and less comedic in this game but considering that Devil May Cry 2 is the latest in the timeline (chronologically) I'd always liked to think that the Dante here was a more matured after all he has experienced over the course of the series and that now he's taken a more graceful stoic personality rather than youthful joker from DMC 3.

IMO, the Timeline is: 3 1 4 5 2 Coz in this game, you don’t see all the old characters anymore. And Dante’s demeanour being that of an old man weary of the world, his job and purpose tells us that he’s went through a lot already. That being said, I love DMC 2. This is the one that really got me into the other DMCs and the lore of it, probably because I really liked this version of Dante; Mature, surgical yet stylish, still.
Yeah I agree I think in some ways your timeline makes more sense. The current timeline doesn't make sense mainly due to DMCV but the main issue with your timeline would be how old Dante is in DMCV while here he looks really young like maybe late 20s-ish or older while in DMCV he's like 40s or maybe a bit more? But aside from looks i think your timeline works better than the current timeline
25:23-25:32 That is one of my favorite moments in the franchise 🥹 People say 'deadpan Dante' is the worst version of Dante but I kinda like him. Despite his rough exterior he is still a nice person, showing kindness to Lucia who was depressed 🥲😊 And if it is true that he was depressed during the events of this game, that makes this scene even better. I think DMC2 Dante works better as an older and wiser version of the Demon Hunter than DMCV Dante.
its implied multiple times in DMC4 that Nero has some relation to Dante and Vergil, mostly Vergil. What really gave it away when Dante told Nero that the Yamato needs to stay in the family and lets Nero keep it. Also if you look at Nero's devil trigger, You'll see Vergil's DMC1 appearance right behind him. Too many things in the game that pretty much say that Nero and Vergil are connected in some way
Kakashi Hatake They kinda imply he came back as granny said dante would come back just like sparda did. Dante said his father did the same thing. Lucia is remembering how dante said that sparda did the same thing, but then quickly makes a comment about how sparda came back. All of a sudden you hear a motorcycle outside his shop.

You guys seem to noticed that he's silent? Dante doesn't talk a lot. According to the cutscenes, he shows to be mature and serious. He's badass but he isn't what he used to be. He isn't the cocky guy anymore, he's grown up. The chronological order is DMC 3, 1, 4, & 2. Dante seems to be around his 40's in DMC 2 (I'm not exactly sure but he looks about it). Whenever he talks, he makes it brief & simple. He used to be a funny guy but he's just silent, his personality changed greatly compared to the other games (to fun-loving cocky guy to silent).
I like this dante out all of them he just got mysterious but serious aura on him and he isn't talking qs much as he usually do I can imagine this dante vs Vergil it would be crazy but i really wish those 2 would have teamed up rather thn tht 1 battle on dmc3

I love how people are debating about Dante's attitude being sober and melancholic. It's not because he was depressed, its not because he had been through a lot. It's because the team behind DMC 1 (Little Devils I think it was?) wasnt even aware that a second DMC was being made, and Itsuno was brought in towards the tail end of the development, the director who directed most of the game was kicked out and not credited. This has nothing to do with Dante's depression and everything to do with the fact that the people behind the development had no clue on what the hell they were doing.
This is the 3rd DMC game in chronological order(DMC3>DMC1>DMC2>DMC4>DMC5) For those who wonder why this one is the *darkest version of Wacky Woohoo Pizza Man* compared to other games which he usually a goofy comedic because the *lost of his family members* (parents were deceased and guilt of losing Vergil aka "The storm that is approaching" twice) making him look depressed. Dante didn't knew Vergil was still alive and have a son. If you think about it, his *DMC5 ost "Subhuman" would fit* in this Dante Version as he just too serious than unusual, depressed, getting to bored killing demons even killing Argosax, he is unkillable. He only became *happy once again in DMC4* after he learned that he have a *DEADWEIGHT* nephew then in DMC5 when he learned *The storm that is approaching* was still alive, a sign that Wacky Woohoo Pizza Man was very very happy that he became goofy, carefree mocking his enemies in comedic way moments once again.
It's a real pity that no one seems to like Devil May Cry 2, cause I kinda like playing the game. Hell, I dare even say I prefer Devil May Cry 2 over the original Devil May Cry. Yes, I will admit it's far from perfect. In fact if you look at through a technical standpoint, it's pretty goddamn terrible. The story, the characters and a good portion of the enemies are not that memorable, but there are a few things I enjoyed. I love the atmosphere, the combat is much more superior than the original Devil May Cry as it's much quicker and less stiff, I like most of the level designs on how grim everything looked, I love the boss battles against that building demon (,sorry I can't spell his name), Bolverk, and Argosax the Chaos, Dante is still awesome, I may hate Lucia, but I like playing as her, I love that you could play as Trish, and I especially love the Majin Devil Trigger mode where you could customize the character's abilities when they are in their Devil Trigger Mode.
Finally someone other me loves this game. This is my favorite DMC game out of all of them. This game is freakin AWSOME SERIOULY. Iv never bear any dmc game as much as this one. With Dante twice ,Lucia twice, and trish twic. I also really love the design of this Dante.
The game had potential but the screenwriter/script writer needs to be out of a job. The director could have constructed scenes better. The gameplay was lax, but the concept of the story was good, the combat with the devil trigger was fun. Dante wasn't as quiet as I remembered which is a good thing, but flipping coins on serious decisions like two face was just retarded and lame.
I really don't know why people are hating so much on Devil May Cry 2, DMC2 was actually a really good game, it was really fun, it may not be as good as DMC and DMC3, but I still think it's fun.

It's my least favorite Devil May Cry game(yes, I prefer DmC over this), but it was also what got me into the series so I can't actually hate on it, rather neutral.

He's like that because he's aging. It's natural to grow more quiet and less jokey. He's about 50 years old, he has no time to mess around. DMC2 Dante's personality is certainly more natural than in DMC4.
I loved this game because the style of artwork and the enemies all looked cool as fuck. super demonic. i dont care too much for the art style of the other DMC games, even though it has better game mechanics. I really wish they would redo this game.... with these types of enemies.
In my opinion Dante’s personality change in this game is warranted while the awful gameplay isn’t. This game may not live up to the Devil May Cry name but it still has a good amount of good parts in it.
yeah i the old Dante was perfect in his design composure appearance. 20/10 imo. This new one doesnt look ugly or anything. But when I see him I see rebellious and rash. As opposed to the always composed and witty Dante from the original series. Does it mean I hate the change? No. I welcome any new addition that seems to be worked on with attention to detail, in one of my favorite gaming universes ever.

I loved the first game as a kid, still do too. I got 45 minutes into DMC2 and had to stop. It's one of the very few I literally couldn't play, so I never saw how bad her character was, but i'll take your word for it haha

@Starscream91 Because it actually doesn't. It was only a decision of the director because he did not like Dante's personality in the first game. The same thing happened with the anime when Kobayashi stated that he didn't wanted a DMC3 Dante and preferred a cool and collected one that resmbled his DMC1 persona. There is no indication, evidence or glimpse that Dante may have depression, it is simply a stupid fan theory due to the multiple interpretations that the character has, that's all.

I did not change my argument, I'm just saying that I thing it's pretty absurd to try to give explanation to something that is not stated anywhere.
DMC always shows Dante as character with a strong willpower, a fighter who is able to face adversity and who acepts destiny as it is.
He didn't lost his humanity and broke bad like his brother did when they were childs, in DMC3 he was prepared to kill his own brother if it was necessary, in DMC1 he was ready to face Mundus even when he was outmatched, in the anime it's showed how he doesn't give a shit about the fact that humans or demons repudiate him because he's a half breed, he made and oath and he is faithful to it, etc. Those are traits from someone with a very strong personality who doesn't break easily, and Dante is shown as a character who can deal with anything due his way of being and his beliefs, it's one of his most recognisable features.
The only time he had some kind of crisis was when he wanted to break apart from his past and origins and went under the allias Tony Redgrave, and that was retconed to some point after the release of DMC3.

DMC2 : Best Atmosphere out of all of the games. Dark, gloomy, despair, full of anguish and agony and encaptures the sadness of the game. Also had amazingly great bloody palace mode which kept me playing again and again for a long time.
DMC3 : Funnest Dante. Most changes to gameplay, added extremely variable replay value. Epic bosses, provided a good story and introduced alot more about Virgil, not to mention after beating the game on the higher difficulties you got to PLAY as him. Sick.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying but for atmosphere I'd honestly say DMC1 did it best the game felt so intense & dark there was a horror-esque element to it which the later games don't have (& i miss that) but imo DMC2 has the best enemies like the Savage Golem still to this day is one of my favorites also the DT & SDT designs are the best in this game like it looks so sick even Dante's design is really good it's not my number one but it's up there my favorite Dante design would definitely be DMC1 but DMC4's is really good too

I dont think you can hate on dantes character in this game. I believe that the reason he isnt his goofball lovable self is because by this point in his life hes been through a whole damn lot of loss. His Mother died, he barely got to know his father, he lost his brother to Mundus (someone who he hates more than anyone else in the entire series) and then had to KILL HIS OWN BROTHER who he loved very much, because there was no saving vergil from the corruption that made him nelo angelo. Combine that with the fact that he never got to see his own nephew (nero) grow up and you realize that damn by this point dante had a lot of hardships in his life. By 2 He could no longer keep up his happy persona and became darker and more serious.There may even be a tragedy that happens inbetween 4 and 2 we dont know about. Who knows, only time will tell.

I was doing a DMC marathon (except the reboot) and IMO the progress was just like the typical life of a person growing up...
DMC 3 - the hype of youth / sibling moments / adolescence or something like that / meeting your 1st crush (lady)
DMC 1 - the pre-adulthood where you have to do your job like a responsible adult you should be / also the time you realize your own potential by achieveing things your parents wasn't able to do before (defeating mundus) / meeting your ideal woman (trish) / this is also the pre-depression time where in you just put your full attention at your job to earn for living
DMC 2 - the post-depression period where you just do your job unmotivated but still dedicated / the time that you just do things asked for you without any complains because you're tired of their BS / meeting the very 1st woman who is interested in you (lucia), but left her because you are too depressed and don't want her to get attached to you at this point of your life
DMC 4 - the point where you just enjoy your life and job to the fullest / the time where you regain your connection to your family and being a responsible uncle to your nephew (nero) / meeting your 1st crush and ideal girl again having closure to both of them as good friends
and DMC 5 which concludes your own story and let the younger generations shine and guide them, Happy End etc...

Dude I’m sorry but I cannot see Dante and Trish in a relationship even if and when DMC tries to paint the idea. Wouldn’t it be kinda weird to date a woman who looks identical to your dead mother? I kinda like the idea of Trish being a sort of voice of reason among everybody, giving off some maternal, parental or authority vibes on occasion among gun toters and Human-Demons descendants willing to tell someone off for screwing around without sacrificing the prospect of ultimately being her own character.
Except DmC is where Dante and Vergil learn their powers and core abilities. And maybe them finding each other again until they fight.

Twosome time which evolved into gunslinger style, wall running which turned into trickster style, best devil trigger in the series, Majin Devil trigger, Bloody palace, amulet system, dantes best outfit, awesome soundtrack, the list goes on

I also think some people overthink with their theories or ideas they have when it comes to explaining things like why Dante is more serious than witty or why we don’t see other characters like Trish after she becomes an ally in the first game and Vergil when his ultimate fate is left unresolved after fighting him three times in the first game. At worst, there is no explanation: DMC2 is just… incomplete, I suppose.
From that point forward, he ended up in the Vortex World, and crossed paths with the Demi-fiend.

To be honest I understand that many people hate this game but come on, this is Dante too. A mature, serious Dante with a rich past on his back. In this game I kinda liked the total demonic atmosphere, Dante's strength, the Ultimate Devil Trigger and that he still had a bit of his cocky nature like how he finishes off Arius, talks with Matier and tricks everyone with his coin of making a decision based on "blind luck". He has seen everything therefore there's no one who would match him. The last boss fight with The Despair Embodied was great and cool. In this episode maybe he's overlevelled even Sparda too. I gave a chance for this game and didn't regret it. It's still and will be a part of a legendary series!
you're very right, like you said he has already done and seen everything and got his power level maxed at the same time getting old.
keep in mind; you are speaking in hindsight. When this game came out his "back story" was DMC1 and that was it, the game was a cheap and rushed cash in and the only reason it has such a rich backstory now is because the developers have been pretending it doesn't exist for a decade plus.

Dante was depressed in dmc1 already because of what occurred in DMC3 and the manga goes deeper into the past events of Dante and vergil and it shows how they suffered as children, also because of what occurred in dmc1 and in the anime, you can see how those events shaped him, eventually it got worse in dmc2, making him almost emotionless and meeting Nero in dmc4 helped him cope as in the beginning of dmc4, he was still in his depressed mood, hence how he seems almost emotionless. Dmc5, Dante got depressed but seeing Vergil after everything finally brought him back to his happy self once again. Also the manga occurs before DMC3. Hence the part where they say in the game "it's been a year since I've seen you" the manga occurs a year before DMC3. It gives you insight into how badly Dante and Vergil were mentally hurt. And how that spanned over the time. In the manga of DMC3. It goes deep into how Dante thought Vergil had died. He also saw his mom get killed from the place in which his mom hid him. And Dante knew of his father's fate. Vergil was actually being tormented and stabbed repeatedly by demons as he could do nothing but listen to the screams of his dying mother. Dante learned of this and this broke him mentally. In the manga, which takes place a year before DMC3. Dante suffers from a form of PTSD flashbacks. And he's less than honorable until DMC3. He's always been depressed. He also didn't expect Vergil's plan and he felt betrayed by Vergil. A line from the manga is "Vergil.... you're in cuhoots with the things that killed our mother and father?" This leads into DMC3. Dante always loved Vergil. But Vergil believed he was abandoned to be tortured and Dante thought he was dead, so he didn't know what to do about that. And you can see how this affected their relationship.

Thanks for posting! I remember this game as it was yesterday. I played the demo , but sadly i kind of missed it back i the day. I bought the HD Collection for PS3 and just started up with the first DMC. I am glad that they have made these HD collection, so that younger generations can see that they could made wonderful games in those days. The games nowadays ain´t nothing compared to the classics of the early 2000s. I was just in my mid teenage when this came out, but I sound like an old man :D On the other hand some say that there was no "Good Old Days". You just did not know of better back then.

I honestly love how much Dante's character changes through the series.
In 3, he's a playful goofball, joking about anything and everything. Except the third fight with Vergil, where Dante knew he was the only thing between Vergil and Sparda's power.
In 1, he feels guilty about losing Vergil to the demon world, but still manages to pull off a few insults ("Flock off, featherface!" will always stick in my head as the best DMC1 insult)
In 4, something (maybe Trish) has revitalized his spirit, and he's become pretty damn smug. He doesn't bother making a quip before blasting Sanctus in the face, because he knows it'll go unnoticed.
In 2, he's clearly matured a lot to the point where he doesn't feel he needs to say anything-his actions (and Rebellion) speak for him. Plus, he's become more good in general-he doesn't stop to think before putting Lucia in front of Arius.
Then there's DmC: Devil May Cry, which we don't talk about too much. For a good reason, too.

This cutscene was beautiful to me, it really showed his depression somehow as he sat there in silence just watching.
Despite how flawed Devil May Cry 2 Is, I personally enjoyed playing it. The dark urban setting, Dantes seriousness, design, and the soundtrack is what I liked about DMC 2. A remake could fix the gameplay issues.
Ya know people bitch about Dante being more solemn and less comedic in this game but considering that Devil May Cry 2 is the latest in the timeline (chronologically) I'd always liked to think that the Dante here was a more matured after all he has experienced over the course of the series and that now he's taken a more graceful stoic personality rather than youthful joker from DMC 3.

Coz in this game, you don’t see all the old characters anymore. And Dante’s demeanour being that of an old man weary of the world, his job and purpose tells us that he’s went through a lot already.
That being said, I love DMC 2. This is the one that really got me into the other DMCs and the lore of it, probably because I really liked this version of Dante; Mature, surgical yet stylish, still.

Yeah I agree I think in some ways your timeline makes more sense. The current timeline doesn't make sense mainly due to DMCV but the main issue with your timeline would be how old Dante is in DMCV while here he looks really young like maybe late 20s-ish or older while in DMCV he's like 40s or maybe a bit more? But aside from looks i think your timeline works better than the current timeline

And if it is true that he was depressed during the events of this game, that makes this scene even better.
I think DMC2 Dante works better as an older and wiser version of the Demon Hunter than DMCV Dante.

its implied multiple times in DMC4 that Nero has some relation to Dante and Vergil, mostly Vergil. What really gave it away when Dante told Nero that the Yamato needs to stay in the family and lets Nero keep it. Also if you look at Nero's devil trigger, You'll see Vergil's DMC1 appearance right behind him. Too many things in the game that pretty much say that Nero and Vergil are connected in some way

Lucia is remembering how dante said that sparda did the same thing, but then quickly makes a comment about how sparda came back. All of a sudden you hear a motorcycle outside his shop.
I hope if they do really make a Devil May Cry 5, that the story continues from here, DMC 2 is by far my favourite of the franchise i love this Dante

If you want to count other games, this version of Dante ends up in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. So technically, you could say that game continues from where DMC2 left off

You guys seem to noticed that he's silent? Dante doesn't talk a lot. According to the cutscenes, he shows to be mature and serious. He's badass but he isn't what he used to be. He isn't the cocky guy anymore, he's grown up. The chronological order is DMC 3, 1, 4, & 2. Dante seems to be around his 40's in DMC 2 (I'm not exactly sure but he looks about it). Whenever he talks, he makes it brief & simple. He used to be a funny guy but he's just silent, his personality changed greatly compared to the other games (to fun-loving cocky guy to silent).

I love how people are debating about Dante's attitude being sober and melancholic. It's not because he was depressed, its not because he had been through a lot. It's because the team behind DMC 1 (Little Devils I think it was?) wasnt even aware that a second DMC was being made, and Itsuno was brought in towards the tail end of the development, the director who directed most of the game was kicked out and not credited. This has nothing to do with Dante's depression and everything to do with the fact that the people behind the development had no clue on what the hell they were doing.
Nice! I actually like DMC2 a lot, even its game play is not on par with the others. Dante surely looks cool in this game.

This DMC2 was my first game of the series and I enjoyed it very much.
This is the 3rd DMC game in chronological order(DMC3>DMC1>DMC2>DMC4>DMC5)
For those who wonder why this one is the *darkest version of Wacky Woohoo Pizza Man* compared to other games which he usually a goofy comedic because the *lost of his family members* (parents were deceased and guilt of losing Vergil aka "The storm that is approaching" twice) making him look depressed. Dante didn't knew Vergil was still alive and have a son.
If you think about it, his *DMC5 ost "Subhuman" would fit* in this Dante Version as he just too serious than unusual, depressed, getting to bored killing demons even killing Argosax, he is unkillable.
He only became *happy once again in DMC4* after he learned that he have a *DEADWEIGHT* nephew then in DMC5 when he learned *The storm that is approaching* was still alive, a sign that Wacky Woohoo Pizza Man was very very happy that he became goofy, carefree mocking his enemies in comedic way moments once again.
That's just a fan theory but it's interesting to think about even if it's not completely consistent
It's a real pity that no one seems to like Devil May Cry 2, cause I kinda like playing the game. Hell, I dare even say I prefer Devil May Cry 2 over the original Devil May Cry.
Yes, I will admit it's far from perfect. In fact if you look at through a technical standpoint, it's pretty goddamn terrible. The story, the characters and a good portion of the enemies are not that memorable, but there are a few things I enjoyed.
I love the atmosphere, the combat is much more superior than the original Devil May Cry as it's much quicker and less stiff, I like most of the level designs on how grim everything looked, I love the boss battles against that building demon (,sorry I can't spell his name), Bolverk, and Argosax the Chaos, Dante is still awesome, I may hate Lucia, but I like playing as her, I love that you could play as Trish, and I especially love the Majin Devil Trigger mode where you could customize the character's abilities when they are in their Devil Trigger Mode.
Finally someone other me loves this game. This is my favorite DMC game out of all of them. This game is freakin AWSOME SERIOULY. Iv never bear any dmc game as much as this one. With Dante twice ,Lucia twice, and trish twic. I also really love the design of this Dante.
DarriusXworld DMC 2 was my favorite DMC all the time.
The game had potential but the screenwriter/script writer needs to be out of a job. The director could have constructed scenes better. The gameplay was lax, but the concept of the story was good, the combat with the devil trigger was fun. Dante wasn't as quiet as I remembered which is a good thing, but flipping coins on serious decisions like two face was just retarded and lame.
I did enjoy the ending with Lucia and the unknown gate of Dante
Don't forget about Dantes Badass Design My jawed dropped at how amazing it is.
Let's just imagine that during Devil may cry 2 Dante was just in a bad mood, so he wasn't joking :)

It's my least favorite Devil May Cry game(yes, I prefer DmC over this), but it was also what got me into the series so I can't actually hate on it, rather neutral.

In my opinion Dante’s personality change in this game is warranted while the awful gameplay isn’t. This game may not live up to the Devil May Cry name but it still has a good amount of good parts in it.

yeah i the old Dante was perfect in his design composure appearance. 20/10 imo. This new one doesnt look ugly or anything. But when I see him I see rebellious and rash. As opposed to the always composed and witty Dante from the original series. Does it mean I hate the change? No. I welcome any new addition that seems to be worked on with attention to detail, in one of my favorite gaming universes ever.
I love this game its the first dmc game i played also has the best devil trigger from the series best outfit the acrobatics he does the way he shoots up in the air the soundtrack is amazing this is also the first dmc game feuturing the trickster and gunslinger style
I loved the first game as a kid, still do too. I got 45 minutes into DMC2 and had to stop. It's one of the very few I literally couldn't play, so I never saw how bad her character was, but i'll take your word for it haha
