For years I didn't realise there was an original that didn't have the sped up intro and how epic it was. This is a Rock classic. It's insane how it's overlooked and even crazier that the lyrics are if anything, more poignant today given the rise of bigotry.
Music channels still pretended they are about music. There was music from almost all genres. I remember metal show at mtv streaming around 11pm. Even in the early 2000's you could hear bands like Slipknot, or Korn going on and on. Now it's corporate shit.
Poetic words. You're right! But I think the music industry is behind it. Did they write the songs themselves? Unfortunately I don't know the history of this band and I heard this song for the first time on TV in a hotel in Belgium in the evening. The song was brand new and I think it was on MTV. I was immediately blown away by the sound.
It was originally a classic rock n roll track, but it got a remix for the Levis advertisement (by legendary producer Arthur Baker). The next year it got a No.1 in the UK charts.

My DJ friend let me take over a kids party from him in about 1996..🤣 I mixed the start of this song into EVERYTHING and the kids went wild. This song + Fugees Killing me softly was a hit... As the kids loved my set so much, he let me DJ the nightclub later that evening... It didn't go as well, several people lost teeth and the bouncers had to be called to the dance floor 4 times. I had a good time though 😀
This IS the original one, from 1995...the "original" edigt you say, which appeared on the TV advert, was a remix by Arthur Baker but ended up as the album version.

Indie version? This is the original version before it was changed to the "final" version which was only done because some business execs from a marketing company for Levi jeans heard it remixed from a DJ at a club. If not for them this band would probably not been known today and this very intriguing and ahead of it's time song be buried forever.

On which album/EP was this exact version of the song present? I'm always finding the version with that chipmunk effect. BTW I noticed that all the streaming services have the shorter (radio edit) version of this song even though the original album had the longer version (with this great bridge from 3:08).
I liked this song back when it was out. It's now starting to grow on me as a ninties theme - it has a strong vibe of pre 2000 era, while feeding strongly on stuff like the club scene from Strange Days and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and at the same time it somehow accurately projects (at least the near) future... Hmm, tough call choosing between this and the more well-known edit. They're both brilliant. This one's a bit less avant-garde, more straight alt-rock. Think I might prefer it, actually.
This was the first time an album from a new artist had gone straight in at number on, in the UK at least.
