Spending easily a full hour on just getting the proportions on paper felt like I was being extremely slow, and thought artists like you would put that down on paper in a couple of minutes. Its very relieving to know that it's just a very precise and time consuming process... Thank you for another great demonstration!
old masters took months and years. It makes sense that the more time you take the more likely your art would look better, i think patience is one of the virtues that sets apart a good artist from a bad one.
I have found the BEST Teacher!!! Thank you for the detailed sketch and fantastic explanations!!!! And the model is a pro!! It is remarkable that she can maintain her pose for that long.
This technique makes sense to me. You draw like a sculptor. I majored in Art in college many moons ago, and was taught in my figure drawing class only a fraction of what I've learned here. No wonder I felt confused and overwhelmed back then. This is much more comprehensive. Wish I'd learned your method 50 years ago.
I agree. I am a self taught artist. I learned to draw by studying Michelangelo...which of course he drew/painted as a sculptor. I try to draw the same way. It works sometimes 😊
Technique-wise I think what yields best results is a painterly approach, and conceptually approach it like a sculptor. So treat your pencil and graphite like a brush and paint, build up the shapes and value layers as if you're sculpting.
Really appreciate these lengthy and detailed videos. Your English is understandable and fine. The music is wonderful. I draw like you...so this is an enjoyable experience. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Keep making more!😊
I subscribed. Very enjoyable and valuable/ helpful presentation. Very solid block in. This exactly where I want my lay ins to be. Solid and confident with single value shadow shapes and well defined planes.
What a soulful, raw expression she has. Props to the model. And I love the artist's technique. I so appreciate that the drawing is done in real time. I have a question: why isn't it good to do curved lines?
Curved vs straight lines can be employed in different ways. Their are pros and cons to using one ore the other however it's mostly up to artistic choice. In a study of da Vinci's horse study sketch. He employs two curved lines and two straight lines emplying the imperfdet yet perfect nature of nature
Hello Anh Coung, wonderful video, looooooove the step by step, I also always thought that the master artists can just start and bam here's the face but you still need to break everything down and it was definitely a pleasure to see even if this video is years old. Megan is a trooper model and she is very beautiful. No problems with accent, English is very good. My thing is you sounded low even with my volume all the way high. With your voice, me straining to listen to every word, the music didn't help. I put my earbuds in to cancel out any of my minute background noise and had to put the volume on high to catch all your words. I haven't watched part2 yet so not sure if sound quality is better or not but definitely an amazing demonstration, Cam On Nhieu Lam! Looking forward to watching everything you put out!
I completely agree. I did think the music was lovely, but is louder than your voice. It was frustrating because it took me away from your teaching with causing some anxiety... watching drawing, hearing music, and faintly talking for a long period of time. On my TV, the speaker volume is up to 80 and I typically watch TV with the volume at 10-12 decibels. Your technique makes the most sense to me. Hopefully your other videos have better volume with less music or none at all. Thank you.
The sitter did a great job holding the pose, I thought it was a still reference until she blinked.
Megan :)
Muy bueno
Yeah, I thought it’s a picture! 🤭😁
It's when she blinked that I lost all respect for her as a reference! J/K :)
it was a loop
When she blinked I almost fell of of my chair! I thought it was a picture! lol
her face is so beautiful.

Outstanding video. The most important part of a portrait. It’s difficult to find such good information on the lay in. Thanks!
