skintone actually have green tone in it, when coloring skin, on digital also, if you want a more realistic approach to the skin you'd use some green in the mix too :)
That green underpainting is called a verdaille. it s a traditional method used to get skin tones right and was invented for oil painting originally. You can also use either a gray (grisaille) or brown (brunaille) depending on the result you want to create. I find it fascinating that color pencils can be worked in layers and using the transparency of the medium to imitate the results of oil painting.😀
Green and yellow are very common undertones in skin colour! It gives more of a realistic tone to skin, and makes it easier to paint/draw things realistically. A lot of artists have trouble with making undertones too cool or warm, but green is like the perfect median of that- warmth from yellow, but cool from blue.
i'm so curious how the change from 3:48 to 3:51 happened... the skin looked so real all of a sudden. would have loved to see this happen in detail. the outcome is gorgeous
The best I can guess from the video and past experience is slowly applying flesh tones of various shades extremely gradually. It's super painstaking and time consuming is why Im assuming he edited in a quick transition. I could also be talking out of my ass.
C - 1. downvoted? This isn’t reddit 2. that’s a shallow reason dislike somebody’s video. the whole thing probably would’ve taken a long time to film. Maybe the camera cut out / lost power? Who knows?
You should read about verdaccio, but my explanation "for dummies" is that our skin accents (lips, checks, nose) are always reddish. The opposite to red is green, so coloring a skin on a greenish tone will pop the red zones :)
I'm some what confused here. When doing theater make up apply green to cancel red. Like blemishes and stuff before applying foundation etc you put green cream over pimples to cancel the red. Did you mean that it'll pop zones that have no green? It's 3am i may not have read any of this properly. Sorry.
His pencil rendering is beautiful when seen alone, but in comparison, Bouguereau's painting is less perfect, less smooth, more human. But his pencil rendering is still a master-class in the use of the medium.
M M Yes that is true this artist is very good at what he does but in comparison to the original the final product does not breathe it does not live it doesn’t have soul it’s just a very very good drawing! I wonder if he were to use the same medium as the original artist if the sole would come through?
What people confuse about those green color in the skin, my analyze is : - Maybe the color from pencil mix together and change into other colors. - Maybe that green color in the skin was the base color. This coloring technique is really true master skills. And what make me more surprising is that he can adjust the value of the colors directly into canvas.
Search about verdaccio, do some study for yourself. For me, it's a shame how you can demand more to a stranger, who is giving you free content, but is still not generous enough for you.
Bouguereau was INCREDIBLE! I have seen his paintings live at the Denver art museum. The children he painted had a glow to them, and a joy, and wonder about them that was almost miraculous. Also the backgrounds were intimate, and would fit the subjects perfectly. The man lost children, and even though he was a master at the French school, he was no stranger to sadness and much of what we all go through. He once stated that when he got up in the morning, he could not wait to get to the studio to paint. And that was usually all day!
Ah it was so nice after the music stopped but then BAM again over that wonderful pencil sound. I wish this didn't have music. It's so pleasant to watch and learn like you're there. Beautiful!
My favourite is the look at 3:56. It's even more vivid than towards the end when the tone is softened. The beginning penciled drawing in brown is just as enchanting. A spectacular study!
@@FFede-ji9lv yeah I know. Which is why I lean more towards Carravaggio. I favor more dramatic lighting (Baroque). Not a huge fan of traditional Renaissance painting/drawing.
@@33akachi10 Well, Bouguereau was an academicist painter, and he does have some works with more dramatic shadows (not much like Caravaggio of course). However, I don't think Mr. Cuong dulled the colors down that much; it was the contrast with the very dark hair that allowed the face to look brighter. I'm fond of the contrast that was before too, but the piece is remarkable anyway, amazing technique.
@@kavalkahn true. It's just a personal preference is all. "Academicist painter", yes and Neo Classical. Bouguereau was definitely born in the wrong era. It's really a shame he's not more well known. I actually seen a few of his paintings in person. They are quite amazing. I've always disliked the lighting on classical works though. I like work with character.
Absolutely stunning! You are a master of your craft. With so much Photoshop painting these days, it's refreshing and reassuring to see that true skill and real, tactile medium still exists. This is timeless art.
The piece is beautiful really. The face is inviting and the scene is soft. The technique used is simple yet done masterfully making it pop. It shows high intelligence. Surely a valuable piece.
Perfection. Lot of folks complaining about the transition from green to flesh wasn’t complete. Get your pastel pencils out , preferably carbothello and just experiment gently layering various colours over green. Familiarise yourself with the mixes, how various layers produce different outcomes. If you go a little too pink, ‘quieten it down’ with green and vice versa. Do the work, that’s how you learn.

the green confused me for a bit when you started coloring with it so it shocked me how you were able to turn that into realistic-looking skin! i'm an aspiring artist and i'm currently trying to study anatomy, lighting, and color theory. this video made me realise how every detail i might think is futile, is actually essential to complete an art piece. i didn't expect to see this to be in my recommended today, but i'm glad it was because your techniques are masterful and your skills are remarkable, which had resulted to a beautiful image, i greatly admire that talent
going completely green for the base color is such a cool technique that I haven't seen before, it makes sense though! So interesting, maybe I should try it ^_^
My art teacher always said: draw with your whole arm, not the wrist! Notice how their wrist is firm, that way you can shade and blend more softly and have pressure control🥰✨
Your work is phenomenal, I wish we can get more behind the scenes in the future! One thing you can't beat though is the slightly annoyed expression of the original, it's priceless!
I shouldn’t watch these. It’s just a constant reminder of how I could never do something like this but would love to be as talented. This must give the artist immense pleasure, I can only dream....

looks like it's the masterpiece by some artist from Renaissance
Варвара Ильина because it is
For me looks like a Italian baroque portrait
Ahem..... "Bouguereau".....
Exactly!!!!
Super👍👍👍

As an olive skinned person I can say that hell yeah green and yellow are definitely normal skin tones

Beautiful ! Interesting technique, starting skin color with a green basis.
Yeah so you bild the different undertones and the result is a ralistic skin
old portrait painting technique Verdaccio uses Green undertone/ Verdaille is a painting done in green scale.

the green base makes the blush stand out more
it makes the redder portions stand out and it makes the skin appear to have more depth
It’s the same as how we have blueish and greenish undertones. He blends the tan color on top of it to add extra life
i think it's supposed to make the skin have more depth. if you look close enough, it's still present at 3:28
People have undertones in their skin colors, olive is a common one in ethnically French people.
I was actually really interested in how you were going to turn the green into a skin tone. It’s a shame you skipped that part
Yattah123 it is the same principle that is used in makeup, green conceals red blemishes because green is opposite to red
@@clonblurmin8194 this is on a canvas, not a face full of acne. what does that have to do with this?
@@donotreply8979 it looks more realistic. Green is the undertone of her skin that's why
@@donotreply8979 it's called color theory. Canvas or face with acne it applies in both.
