    Hair tonics were most popular in the 50's and 60's...Yes, they smell great and it's healthy for the scalp. Also popular hair products back in the day was Brylcreem "A little can will do ya"....and Vaseline hair tonic.

    • @Magnulus76
      @Magnulus76 3 роки тому +3

      I'd use older hair tonics like Osage Rub or Eau de Quinine over Brylcreem or Vitalis, which have alot of heavy oils or waxes, none of which are all that great for scalp health in my experience (Vitalis is the least offensive of the two, but it still does have some alcohol wax to increase the hold. It also doesn't really tonify the scalp, it's just for hold only).

    Thank you Awesome video, I've said it before, but I searched out Hair Tonic videos after watching an episode last year of The Andy Griffith Show, I'm 63 & I swear I've never known about Hair tonic, I saw Floyd the barber on that show always using it or at least asking his customers if they wanted some, & when I was very young & dad use to take me to the barber shop they always used a hair tonic on me after, but they never explained what it was & I never cared to ask, I just thought it was cheap stuff with a decent smell they threw in, until I saw your video, after seeing it that show I decided to see what anyone had to say about it & right away I order 5 Hair Tonics, Jeris, Lucky Tiger, Vaseline, Vitalis & Reuzel, I love all 5 of them & always have them all on hand & use 1 of them daily.

    Of the hair tonics I've tried, Vitalis is my favorite so far and my favorite hair grooming product. Lucky Tiger ended up being too greasy and weighed my fine textured hair down and Clubman Pinaud wasn't as good (plus I hated the scent of the Clubman tonic as it made me smell like a margarita). Pomades, creams (the only ones I've tried are Brylcreem and Wildroot) and even clays just make my hair look too greasy, stringy and gross looking. Vitalis gives me a nice natural look with better volume, decent hold for my side part business style cut and nice soft hair. It's not perfect but I'm enjoying it. I want to try Jeris without the mineral oil and Osage Rub again as well as Reuzel Grooming tonic.

    I found this quite informative, I’m looking over probably in 1930 to 40‘s maybe earlier sign for the associated Master barbers of America, Bergen county chapter, number 597, “ IT PAYS TO LOOK WELL” As a guy with no hair at my age now, I was curious about what the hair tonic was, $.25 if you wanted it back then, a haircut was three dollars a shave was 2.50, children’s haircut $2.50 during the week, and an extra $.50 bonus on Saturday for annoying the barber, so I found this quite interesting, I have my grandfathers 1900 KOCH chair and all the photos and even original paper in headpiece of chair looking to sell in north New Jersey USA as I have to downsize… thanks for the video good job, it was Paul’s barber shop Hackensack New Jersey I believe Mercer street

    You can also comb your hair with a wide tooth comb in the shower as you rinse your hair. Doing so will get rid of splits and it will make your hair feel sorry and smooth -- especially if you do it after applying shampoo or conditioner.

    Just seen that u are back, glad to see u again on youtube. I have a question: would tonic help with flakes or dandruff caused by dry scalp. I normally use oily/wax pomades and they feel good. But recently when I'm not at work I started wearing my hair clean or use gel pomade the odd day so I can wash it out easily and I started having flakes that don't seem to go away even with special shampoo. I had flakes before when I stopped using oily pomades but it did go away when I started reusing particularly oily pomades but I want something that make is go away without greasing up.

      The grooming tonic contains polymers which provide a little fixation when it dries. It gives a natural dry look. Great for creating volume with a blow dryer.

      Water based products are better because they won't build up as much, which never made my hair or scalp feed good. Brylcreem has beeswax, which I find to be really heavy after a while and doesn't wash out easily at all, though the newer formulation is better than ones in the past at washing out (VO-5 is the worst, it doesn't wash out easily at all).
      You might like Groom and Clean. It doesn't have any VA/PVA like hair gels or sprays, it's just a water-based emulsion of lanolin and a little mineral oil and is fairly light if you use a small amount.

    • @danbasta3677
      @danbasta3677 Рік тому

      @@Magnulus76 If used with a small application of the products you've mentioned, they will wash out, however they will leave a residue, meaning some of is still in your hair. Not to worry, as the next time you wash your hair, you will wash out that left over residue. This is why you wash your hair every other day, and only once a week, you use these hair creams or in the case of VO 5, which is actually petroleum jelly with fragrance added it will eventually break down and wash out, JUST as long as you don't put a whole hand full of the stuff in your hair when only a small application is necessary. Way back when, many moon ago, men had no hair preparations to use for their hair, and yet, Vasiline petroleum jelly was actually used to control and to comb their hair with, that's a known fact. It wasn't until Brylcream came into the market that the big switch happened, after that, Vitalis Hair Loation came on the market, and yes, at one time, Vitalis did indeed have a hair cream, however switched over to a hair loation to in which that's whare they stayed to this very day. Other manufactures came on the market such as Wildroot hair cream which started out as a hair loation, Top Brass by Revlon, Vasiline Hair Tonic which was mineral oil and a fragrance, a hair cream called Trim a blue/white hair cream, Venture Hair Tonic, Heads Up hair loation and Hair cream, there were many hair loations and hair creams and hair dressings available such as Score by Brystal Meyers Incorporated who also marketed Vitalis, and Score was once a liquid before becoming a hair dressing which was made much earlier than Groom and Clean, Code 10 Hair cream I can go on. Sad part of all of this, it has dwindled way down to only two hair products now open and available for men, and that is, Vitalis and Brylcream. Those two are the only ones left on the market for men these days while the others are no longer manufactured. Wildroot is still out there, however very few places carry it, and that's sad because Wildroot is a excellent hair training cream for your hair, IF you only use a small application for your hair and only once a week applications.

      In this video my hair is a bit grown out from a high bald fade on the sides (about a 1 1/2 blade) and the top is about 2 1/12 inches with a lot of texture throughout. Depending on your hair layout you might need to compensate. I also like to keep the shape of my haircut square which is important to mention to your barber. If you have cowlicks on the front of your head this messy texture look will be a lot easier and better to maintain than an undercut. Hope this helps and good luck!

      It depends. Alcohol based tonics are ment to be used sparingly. It’s alcohol of course. Use alcohol based tonics maybe 2 to 3 times a week. Oil Based Tonics are mainly for dry scalp,and dry hair. If you have oily hair,maybe not. However,you will probably have to shampoo to wash out the oils. Water based tonics you can practically use almost every day. Just use ALL of them sparingly.

    • @danbasta3677

      @@evilish7 Not really. One is designed for the hair and scalp while the other is designed with fragrance and alcohol to smootin up and tone up a freshly clean shaven face, and if there is any nicks or cuts, it helps it to not bleed as much and antiseptic to cleanse along with irrigate the nick or cut from a shaving razor.

    I used reuzel tonic. Not a fan. All the chemical ingredients had me worrying about hair thinning and fallout. I use to use it everyday especially applying after a fresh shower. Don't use it anymore. I opt for more all natural tonic.

    For those of us of a certain age and who have thinning hair, would you recommend using tonics over gels, pomades, waxes and sprays for styling?

      I just tried the Reuzel Grooming Tonic (yellow one) and it definitely adds volume to thin hair. My hair is not thinning but it's always been fine. Nice 👍 product!

    • @TheEchelon
      @TheEchelon 5 років тому +1

      I shower each day, but I don't wash my hair each day. Washing your hair each day isn't good for your hair or scalp. You probably get super greasy and have to wash it so often, but that's because your oil production is ramped up since it gets stripped off each day.

    By the very definition of tonic, these are not tonics. It's a rub, or ointment, tonic is something you drink

    • @infumoscus6067
      @infumoscus6067 6 років тому

      @Jesus not what he means though. Tonic is drank like how you would drink water or soda.

    • @infumoscus6067
      @infumoscus6067 6 років тому

      @Jesus I did. It's short for tonic water, witch is a hint why its drank through the mouth. Don't call people wrong if you are wrong

    • @infumoscus6067
      @infumoscus6067 6 років тому +1

      @Jesus chill out, man. Medicinal substance is another definition. So that medicinal substance can also be taken through consumption. I'm still not wrong.
