How to Write a Good Paragraph in English! Academic Writing: Basic Paragraphs + Expanded Paragraphs!

- Do you want to improve your academic writing skills? Did you know that a paragraph is the same as a sandwich? Are you ready to learn how to write good paragraphs in English? Would you like to learn about Canadian food? In today’s English lesson you'll learn how to write basic paragraphs and how to write expanded paragraphs.
You'll learn several important steps for writing a paragraph, as well as receive extra writing tips to make your paragraphs even better. You’ll also discover how writing a good paragraph is the same as making a delicious sandwich. As you learn the process for creating a paragraph, you can enjoy an example paragraph about Canadian food.
The easiest way to remember how to write a paragraph is to think about a sandwich. A sandwich has three basic parts to it. It has a top piece of bread, ingredients in the middle, and a piece of bread at the bottom. This is the way a paragraph works as well.
The top piece of bread in the sandwich is like your topic sentence. Your topic sentence is the most important part of your paragraph because it tells readers exactly what they can expect to read about in the following sentences. The middle part of the sandwich is the supporting sentences. Supporting sentences help to provide information about your topic sentence. The two most common types of paragraphs usually written academically for university are reason paragraphs or example paragraphs, so in your sandwich each of the ingredients, each supporting sentence, must be a reason why what you've written in your topic sentence or an example of what you've written in your topic sentence. The last piece of bread in the sandwich is your conclusion. A conclusion is also a vital part of the sandwich because if you don't have that bottom piece of bread, the sandwich will just fall apart. If you don’t have a good conclusion, readers will feel unsatisfied by your paragraph. This English lesson will go into more detail about all of these points!

Steps for writing a Paragraph in English:
1. Think about the topic carefully + consider the question you need to answer
2. Write clear topic sentence
3. Brainstorm list of ideas
4. Choose best 3 or more ideas from list
5. Write a supporting sentence starting with a transition for each item chosen
*6. For expanded paragraphs: write one or more detail sentence for each supporting sentence to give more information about that item
7. Write a strong conclusion starting with a transition
The example expanded paragraph from this English writing lesson is as follows:
Canada has a lot of delicious foods! First, Poutine is a classic savoury dish consisting of French fries, cheese curds, and gravy. It was originally created in the 1950s in Quebec, but can be found everywhere in Canada today. Furthermore, Nanaimo bars are a classic three-layered sweet dessert in Canada with chocolate and coconut on the bottom, custard-flavoured butter icing in the centre, and a chocolate top layer. Nanaimo bars were first created in the city of Nanaimo, which is on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. In addition, gooey, sticky, butter tarts are another great Canadian sweet. The earliest butter tart recipe is in an Ontario cookbook from 1900, although the actually history of the butter tart is older. Therefore, hopefully you can try all these tasty Canadian treats!

When you were a little girl in grade five I taught you to write hamburger paragraphs. (Same principle) You were probably the best student writer I ever taught. It is so wonderful to watch you today. The Netherlands has a lot of delicious treats.
First of all the stroopwafel, translated is says: sirup waffle. It is a cookie that is served by the coffee and it is build up between two circles formed waffles with thick sirup in between. It tasted best when it’s warmed up a little bit in the oven. Secondly, what also can be given with coffee is the tompoes. On top it is covered with a shiny layer of pink sugar or orange sugar when it is Kingsday in Holland what is on the 27th of april each year. The Dutch celebrate the Kings birthday. In between you find a big layer of yellowish bakery cream and a small layer of cake on the bottom. Last, but not least, we have vla as desert. It is served after supper. Vla is a thin sort of pudding that comes in many different flavors like vanilla, chocolate, strattiatella, framboise, strawberry, white vla and many other variations. It can be eaten plain, but also with some whipped cream on top.
Therefore I hope you can enjoy one of all of these treats, but maybe you can look them up on the internet and google pictures from them.

I taught junior high (in US) for 17 years. I taught paragraphs using a "hamburger" analogy, which lines up with your "sandwich" analogy. Also, I live very close to Canada, and was fortunate enough to have a mom who could make Nanaimo bars.
The yam slices are thick. The slices are boiled soft without salt and pounded in a mortar with pestle. It is pounded till smooth and comes together in a whole. Soup is mixed vegetable with fish, cow skin, crayfish, stock fish and liver cut into cubes.The dish name is IYAN AND EFO RIRO. Such a sumptuous meal eaten by Yoruba people in Nigeria.We have ofada rice and stew, amala and ewedu and so many other mouth watering delicacies.

Iran, land of healthy foods
First Ash Reshte, traditional dish which is generally served in the winter is the soup dish Ash Reshte. Hearty and delicious, this soup is made from chickpeas, beans, noodles and plenty of herbs.

In conclusion, the cancer rate in Iran is low compared to the US where we lose over a half million people a year and it is the second leading cause of death. Iran is starting to see cancer deaths rise but maybe some of the reasons cancer is not as prevalent could be the foods, activity, altitude. sense of culture, and their philosophy of life.

The structure for writing paragraphs that I taught in this lesson is for academic purposes and is useful for college / university and for tests like IELTS. If you're not writing for academic purposes, it isn't necessary to write paragraphs following the format taught in the lesson. 🌸
Parallel structure isn't the same as supporting sentences. I think you may have become a little confused due to someone else's comment asking about the topic. That being said, your three examples of sentences using parallel structure are great! 👍🏻
If I were to write a basic paragraph based on what you've written, this is what it may look like:
"There are many foods that you shouldn't miss when you travel to Spain. First, it is recommended that you try gazpacho. Also, you must taste paella. In addition, you need to try tortilla. In conclusion, do not leave Spain without trying these mediterranean dishes. "

To make this paragraph even better, you should choose one of the snacks to make a supporting sentence about, and then add a detail sentence about it. Your confusion was good though. Sudan has many delicious foods. First, Kisra is the main dish in central Sudan. Kisra is basically a type of bread, that is made from corn. besides , Gourrassa is popular dish in North Sudan. It is made up of wheat and baked in a circular shape. Then, Kajaik is a popular stew dish of South Sudan.Kaijaik is made of dried fish. In addition, Asseeda, Elmaraara and Umfitit are great Sudanese foods as well. therefore, hopefully you can try all these tasty Sudanese foods.

I also recommend you to make "Kheer". As in India it is generally cooked during happy moments as well as in festivals.
I'm not sure about making Kheer myself, but I think it's a delicious dessert so I should order some from an Indian restaurant. It's very similar to a dessert we have in Canada, "Rice-Pudding". 👍🏻

So nice of you for sharing such a nice video. Can you please tell me what you meant when you compared the conclusion part of a paragraph while writing an essay and a single paragraph. What I got Is that while writing an essay, all body paragraphs will be concluded by summarizing the topic sentence and supporting sentences therein. On the other hand, if I write a single paragraph on a specific topic, I shouldn't conclude it with a summary of topic and supporting sentences but with my opinion about the topic. Am I right? Please help me getting out of confusion.
Hello Khadija 🤗. Thanks for your nice comment. Yes, it seems you understood what I meant perfectly. The concluding sentence of a single paragraph should not be a summary of the topic sentence. When you write an entire essay, it is like taking this basic structure and turning each part of the sandwich into a full paragraph rather than just one sentence. Then your concluding paragraph in your essay can included a summary of your thesis (topic sentence paragraph) and overview the main point of each of your paragraphs 👍🏻.
