Same problem with our 2018 Equinox, the sun shade delaminated and this was long after we had installed ceramic window tint, which is supposed to be the best tint on the market to protect from the sun thermal rays. Thank you for doing this video, I had scoured the internet looking for a tutorial on "how to" fix panoramic shade issue. There are several entries on various GM forums but nothing this comprehensive. Getting the "Clips" back into the track was tricky and I need to "stretch" the ends in order to get the new piece to properly lock into place. Not to mention its helpful if you DON"T remove that clip prior to install, also, leave yourself an escape in order to pull that clip after you align the tracks, get the screws snug. Then pull the pin. I just stopped my timer right at 4:32. It should have been a 2hr install at most. Helps if you have someone to hold things. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video, it helped a lot with removal! A cheaper fix, rather than replacing the whole mechanism, I found that you can put a small screw through the metal bar and the assemble that holds the spring, then wind the spring a little, and it’s good as new. Good video my man I had the same problem with my Cadillac CTS I haven’t replace mine yet but I am looking into it mine is a 2014 3.6 L luxury collection 39,000 on it
How did you know you had overtightened the bolts? I just replaced mine, and naturally put everything back together. And now mine doesn’t move a inch before retracting back fully open… I don’t want to force it closed/ do the initialization and ruin it. Just not sure what’s wrong. My pin is pulled too
Hi David, I'm just seeing this so sorry for the delay. The plastic around the bolts will get crushed or crack if you over tighten them so just tighten the bolts until they are snug. You shouldn't have any issues as long as the sunshade is seated correctly where it goes. Make sure the front clips snap into that little channel and ensure the back fits up flush. Obviously, the prongs on the cables that pull the shade open and close have to be seated on the teeth of the shade. If installed correctly, you should not have to reinitialize the motors. Usually if it's retracting on its own, it means something is preventing it from coming open all the way. Make sure there is no debris or anything blocking its path. Hope this helps! I was able to download a service manual for a 2014 Cadillac CTS and the procedure should be the same for V's.
Thanks Jamal for this video. I just received the same quote for my 2017 Cadillac XT5, after its second time within 2 years. Luckily it was under warranty the first time. If it wasn’t already summer here in Florida I would be tempted to give this a try. However, I think I’ll shop around for a cheaper price and support a small business for this repair. On that note, you did an excellent job explaining and showing the process. I will now subscribe to your channel. Good luck and keep up the great work!
If the liner sags, should it be an automatic replacement or has something came loose? Had liner replaced before by dealership then didn't use it much. Went to use it the other day and noticed the sag. Wouldnt want to replace it again for no reason.
I would think a sag would be the result of it being stretched which would call for a replacement. However, if it opens and closes just find without and weird noises then I, personally, wouldn't replace it just yet
HELP!!! I mistakenly removed the pin before installation because I could not see a way to remove it after it was installed and now it won't snap in. After bolting it in it would only begin to close and move 2 inches before retracting and it's my guess that I did a boo-boo. (1.) How did you remove the pin after installation? (2.) Do you know of a way to salvage the new shade? (3.) How did you get that last electrical connector to release from the overhead console, the one on the right side rear?
Hi, There is no problem with removing it before installing. You should still be able to get it to sit in there properly. My guess is, its just not seated and aligned properly and that's why it only comes out two inches and goes back. You need to double check it to make sure it's seated and snapped in properly. As for that electrical connector (the small black one), if I remember correctly, I used a pick to pry the female edge away from the male one and pulled carefully
Jamal, I closed my shade liner and I heard a Pop and then I tried to open it again and it came loose from the back. So now the Shade liner is just hanging from the Front. The entire back part is loose hanging. What do you think happened? It seems like I can just pop the back part back in?
Do you have to remove the windshield in a 2016 CTS 4 to replace the sun shade, dealer ship says the wind shield has to be removed to replace the shade????
No you do not have to for the sun shade. If you were replacing the entire frame of the sunroof, then maybe I could see it, but for just the shade, removing the windshield is not required
Question, where you able to gain access to the sunroof bolts without pulling the entire liner down? I currently have an issue with my sunroof squeaking and creaking whenever the body of the car flexes. I had this fixed while under bumper-to-bumper warranty however, four years later it’s starting to do it again and I have been thinking of adding some Loctite to those torque screws.
Jamal, I have similar issue on my 2018 GMC Terrain. So, when you pulled the original busted roller out, were you able to figure out what actually broke on it? I want to see if I can just reset it?
So the adhesive that holds the cloth to the metal coil on the end came unglued from age, temperature or whatever, but it wasn't something that could just be reset. The metal coil is very thin and flat, once it gets mangled, it would be extremely difficult to straighten it back out and glue the cloth back to it
So my shade stops half way back just enough to where the sunroof still doesn't open and close. The piece that holds the shade up front snapped in the track. Iv already cut the shade out. I watched your video but I'm having a hard time get the rest out due to the piece being stuck in the track
Do you know if this same process will work on a 2014 Cadillac XTS? An upholster shop quoted me $1,500 to $2,000. And what did I do...? Came straight to TheUA-cam! 🦋
Hey man! When I close the sunshade (covering the glass) the metal coil looking thing comes out with the cloth part. It’s the thing making the crinkle sound. Is that the sunshade or the motor?
Great video man, the sunshade on my 2016 crapped out and 1500 bones just seems ridiculous at Sewell Houston. Just under 300 for the part is fair and the procedure seems simple.
So I recently replaced mine on my CTS and the first time I put it I totally forgot to remove the pin and so I had to take it off again and remove it. So then I tried again but I noticed it was more harder trying to align the actual shade on its tracks since I have removed the pin and so it was a lot of trial and error I probably had to put it on and off 4-5 times because it kept going off track. And so at the last try a managed to make it work but I was left with a saggy shade and does not look good. I’m assuming I was suppose to take the pin off after installing the 4 screws and aligning everything but I never thought It would be like that. Any insight on this?
I actually pulled the pin before installing it as well. I was able to get mine to line up perfectly. It's a little annoying once the pin was removed but I was able to make it work. Unfortunately, I don't have any great advice to offer you other then taking it back out and trying to roll it tight and realign it
I used to auto upholstery for a good dozen years. I have a neighbor with this car and normally with some of the Saab and Volvo cars with sunroofs...(when we do headliners) we would remove the sunroof (after marking the location of the screws where they hold the frame of the glass to the moving mechanism of the sunroof)...but when I assumed that this assembly would be similar and there were no visible screws up top.... I was thinking...great. Gotta drop the headliner to get to this thing.... so...with this neighbor's car...there is some kind of clock spring steel portion that I assume came unglued from the side of the shade material. ... my attempt will be to repair what he has IF I'm able to without seeing all that is involved. Good job on showing what needs to happen! I PERSONALLY would have removed the headliner to just give me complete access to what is going on. At the least remove the B pillars to allow the headliner to give a little more wiggle room for forearms and tools. Be glad they didn't liquid nail the headliner board to the roof! Those jobs suck cuz the wires for dome lights and visors are also attached to the board and not just taped or clipped to the metal roof structure of the car. They definitely make these things a bit more challenging then they need to. I'm thinking there is probably a clip close to the visors that once you get the center console up top out of the way....you could unclip from above the headliner board....but hopefully you won't ever have to do this again. I was hoping to just pull the whole mechanism out from the sunroof glass opening in the roof of the car. Oh well. Again. Thanks for giving some insight to those that don't know what is involved with said repair. Is that clock spring steel ribbon deal a different item than what you replaced?
@@JamalsGarage I'm gonna see if I can just reglue the stuff back on with the stuff we use for gluing new headliner material onto the headliner boards after the old foam had been scraped clean and any repairs made...... In your experience...did the steel ribbon part brake or get kinked at all? I'm asking cuz I'm not wanting to take this guys daily driver apart and not be able to put it back together same day cuz there are more things that I need to address... I also have had my share of ordering online issues. Thanks for any insight!
@@mrupholsteryman Mine got all kinked up and mangled. It was definitely not reusable. I mean there may have been a small chance that I could have stretched it back flat to save it, but that would have been extremely difficult imo
@@JamalsGarage going forward...I'm gonna order it...and see if I am able to salvage the original and IF not....I'll have the part there...if I am able ....then I will return it and still have it fixed same day and have a part that I will more than likely need for someone else's. Since it seems to be a problem. Thanks again!
So are you saying the outside edge of the sun shade contains metal spring cables??? And these are what fails and become mangled??? I can see where the edge of the sunshade has come unglued. Mine just goes back a couple inches and starts bunching up like something is in the way. Thats what my local garage thinks too. But sounds like it needs a whole new shade if what im asking about is true…
Great video! I’m going to attempt on my 2014 SRX, I’m assuming it’s gotta be very close to same procedure. 1 question, can you get a better picture of the pin that wrecked your first shade? Maybe if you still have the old one?
Unfortunately, I don't have it anymore. It looks like a coiled spring. I pulled it all the way out before bolting the new sunshade in. You can't miss it. It sits right between the roll and the frame of the part.
Hi, I Have a 2014 CTS Performance, Its having the same issues, When I looked on the site (You Left int he description) for the sunshade, It doesn't look like the you bought. Do you have any install material for the install on the 2014 CTS
Hello Jamal. Thx for the video. Im currently having the exact same issue. I live in Jordan so getting replacement parts might not be as easy. How likely you think the old one can be saved? re glueing ? Have you inspected your old shade and figured out what was causing the issue? Was the metal bended?
Hello Rawad! So the roll has long flat metal ribbon on both sides that it is glued to that coils it into a roll. The cloth came unglued from the metal and then the metal kind of destroyed itself when I opened the sunshade. There's a small chance that you might be able to save your's but in my case, it was impossible. Hope this helps!
Wow, awesome DIY. Not a lot of hard labor, just tedious with all those screws. Bummer you had to get another shade! I have a 2016 SRX and it just happened yesterday. Don't know if I'll tackle this though. But sure don't want to go to the dealer. Might just get the shade, and get some estimates to install. Thanks.
Glad u did this video man! My extended warranty just expired 2k miles ago and the sunshade cover is doing the same thing loose and grinding noise when retracting.. Just outside my warranty so I will be doing this job myself. Thanks for the guide!
Hey - does anyone know what to do if the leading bar from the screen won't retract all the way? Like if it's stuck at about the point where the two sections of sunroof meet, roughly ten inches out from the spool? Mine will only roll all the way forward and then back to that point. Even after cutting and removing the roll cartridge. Advice urgently needed, as this repair is stuck halfway through!
Now that you've cut the roll out. Grab the cloth cover and pull it from the back putting tension on it, and hit the retract button. See if that will work
Thank you so much Jamal! Same problem on my Cadillac SRX. Did you happen to record the pulling of the pin? You are brave to attempt this and smart to have succeeded and a really great guy to help all of us out with this video :) Question : I see you ordered the new shade from GMC. I have seen it for sale for $80 from other companies….I’m guessing you would recommend investing in GM parts?
As far as I know, I don't think there were any aftermarket companies that made a sunshade for my car. I unfortunately did not film the pin. If you click on this link, you can see exactly what the pin looks like: s3.amazonaws.com/rp-part-images/assets/81cf56e6dfb50e34180fff70f781e533.jpg
Man, I’ve been waiting for someone to make a video on this! My ‘16 CTS sunroof shade has done the same thing and I was wondering how do do this without royally screwing things up. You made a fantastic video and I am going to follow along and fix mine now. Here in the Bay Area the dealer quoted $1900 and I said no thanks. Here’s my question- looking at my sagging sunshade I noticed edge is NOT torn but instead there is a glue that appears to have failed. It also looks like the manufacturer was skimpy on the glue as it’s barely there. It’s likely from the seasons of heat/cold and eventually gave way. 1. Do you think the new part is going to have the same issue in a couple years? Or does it look like they fixed the issue? 2. From what you saw by looking at the part, do you think there is a chance I can fix mine by re-gluing it? Maybe I could slop on enough glue that it won’t ever come off again lol
Hi Jeff, You are spot on about the glue failure and honestly, it doesn't seem like they did much to solve the issue. I don't think you will be able to salvage your old one if the metal edges have been mangled like mine was. Once the metal bends, it is extremely difficult to get it to straighten back out IMO.
It did, but my manufacturers bumper to bumper warranty expired which would have covered it. Since my car was certified pre owned, it came with an extended warranty but the dealer said that the extended warranty wouldn't cover it on some bullshit excuse because the sunshade is considered a "trim" piece
Blessing in disguise that you posted this, I just purchased a CTS without even checking the sunroof. Little did I know it had this problem. How did you go about finding the right sunshade color though?
I had to scour GM parts websites to find the right part number! There are three colors listed for 2016 (black, neutral, and platinum). If you go to the link below, item #10 is the three different part numbers according to the color. hope this helps! www.gmpartsdirect.com/v-2016-cadillac-cts--v--6-2l-v8-gas/body--sunroof
Thank you for taking the time to reply. With your help I was able to find the correct one, and I’m going to try installing mine today. I hate that you had to do this twice, but I’m glad you were able to put this resource out here for all of us.
If I attempted to do this, I'm sure I'd probably cause bigger problems and break things. So, I'm one of those that would have to have it done for me I guess. Maybe I can just drive around without the cover? Good video though and sorry you hade to learn the hard way :(
I am having the same issue and the Cadillac dealer in Memphis will NOT replace mines because the age of my car. It is a 2014 XTS. So the service department referred me to Don's Upholstery in Memphis and Don (the proprietor) quoted me $1,500 to $2,000. Don then went into a long story about all the things they have to remove to get to the shade. Don lied because Jamal did not do half of what Don said needed to be done. I HATE how some people are dishonest and just want to cheat honest working people out of their hard-earned money!
So did it take you the entire three weeks to stop swearing at yourself and smacking your head? Also did you clean out the sunroof drains while you had access to the hoses? Because that's the next thing to go wrong with the CTS sunroof they're known for drain clogs causing leaks in the roof and soaking the floor.
@@JamalsGarage Figured as much, been there, done that..To my disappointment I found this video to find out how to take off the C Pillar in mine so that I can replace the seatbelt but you cheated so you were no help whatsoever, thanks for nothing! However you were some partial help with the sunvisors I had to remove to clean them today, FYI for others too you just have to give the wire a pretty persistent and gentle tug to find it is quite long and there is a small plug to disconnect to take them off completely, it seems it must be glued to the headliner but I have taken so many off over the years I just knew they couldn't have made this one so much more complicated. Also I have a pair of stainless forceps (but a small pair of needle nosed would work just as well) and they are like one of my most utilitarian tools and I used them to pinch the clips inside the plastic retainer together to have an easy removal but would have not been so well prepared had you not struggled and cursed so much to get it off, don't deny it, that's why you turned the sound off and used music during that time,I saw your lips moving though. Anyway it is still always butt puckering when you have to pull and then it suddenly 'snaps' lose and you can breathe again. BTW those visor mounts have got to be the most over-engineered part ever!

Will these same installation steps work for shade replacement on a 2019 Cadillac XT5 ?
Hi,
There is no problem with removing it before installing.
Jamal, we are going to try to do this. We don’t have many tools. Can you tell me which tools I should buy for this project? Thank you so much!
I would get some trim removal tools, some picks, and a basic socket set
I have 2014 xts with same exact situation you went through. Going to order the part and give it a shot... thanks for video
I have a 2014 XTS with the same issue and an upholster shop quoted me $1,500 to $2,000.
Where you able to replace/install your own sunshade?
🦋
Question, where you able to gain access to the sunroof bolts without pulling the entire liner down? I currently have an issue with my sunroof squeaking and creaking whenever the body of the car flexes. I had this fixed while under bumper-to-bumper warranty however, four years later it’s starting to do it again and I have been thinking of adding some Loctite to those torque screws.
Absolutely! If you just lower the headliner to where I did in the video, you can easily access all of the sunroof bolts
The metal coil is very thin and flat, once it gets mangled, it would be extremely difficult to straighten it back out and glue the cloth back to it
So really there's no way to prevent it lol other than don't use it?
So my shade stops half way back just enough to where the sunroof still doesn't open and close. The piece that holds the shade up front snapped in the track. Iv already cut the shade out. I watched your video but I'm having a hard time get the rest out due to the piece being stuck in the track
Like the front bar of the shade that runs across the glass is stuck?
Ok I'm getting ready to do this myself. Do you pull the pin AFTER it''s bolted in? Thanks!
I actually pulled mine BEFORE, because it is very hard to access once it's installed
@@JamalsGarage Perfect, thanks!
Mine started to make the crinkle sound towards the ends of its life. In most cases, it's the sunshade
No it's part of the assembly that I changed. You nailed it, the cloth comes unglued from the metal spring wire
Stealerships, always getting away with warranty work. Always something, appreciate the content. My 18 championship edition, hasn't had that issue.
Did you order from gm parts direct? Just wondering if the part is the same as the OE one from the dealership.
Yes, the same one from the link in the description. It is the OE part
@@JamalsGarage thanks! Gonna give it a go today.
I’m currently having this problem with my 2012 Cadillac SRX I’m in Ga do you have any recommendations of who could fix it?
Did you test it before you put the headliner back up the second time?
Yes I did. It worked fine and then I put the headliner back on
Hi, I Have a 2014 CTS Performance, Its having the same issues, When I looked on the site (You Left int he description) for the sunshade, It doesn't look like the you bought. Do you have any install material for the install on the 2014 CTS
I double checked the site and it looks like the 2014 cts is listed on the fitment guide. And the link is for the same one I purchased.
Perfect instruction. Not too bad. Just did it my 2014. Thank you for info.
How's it holding up so far?
@@JamalsGarage thx Jamal Ill give it a try after removal. Thx again and Ramadan Mubarak!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks.
The dealership has had my CTS for 4 days and they removed the whole interior and windshield to do what you did. Sad part is it still isn't done.
Oh damn!
@@JamalsGarage it is now going on a week. Tried showing them your video but he said we are certified Cadillac techs. We know what we are doing.
LMAO
@@JamalsGarage I just got it back 8 days later and they didn't fix it. They told me I need to reschedule another appointment
@@JamalsGarage took them 2 weeks and they forgot to connect my interior lights
Just happened to my 17 cts-v only 25k miles frustrating, how long did it take you roughly to replace.
I'd say anywhere from 3 to 4 hours
@@JamalsGarage much appreciated
Great video! Very informative. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Can i do the 2012 the same way you did the 2014?
You are brave to attempt this and smart to have succeeded and a really great guy to help all of us out with this video :) Question
: I see you ordered the new shade from GMC.
How do you remove the lock screen
Hi Jeff,
You are spot on about the glue failure and honestly, it doesn't seem like they did much to solve the issue. I don't think you will be able to salvage your old one if the metal edges have been mangled like mine was. Once the metal bends, it is extremely difficult to get it to straighten back out IMO.
I thought it came with a warranty.. and why you had to pay 15000 they tucking crazy the dears ship out line
It did, but my manufacturers bumper to bumper warranty expired which would have covered it. Since my car was certified pre owned, it came with an extended warranty but the dealer said that the extended warranty wouldn't cover it on some bullshit excuse because the sunshade is considered a "trim" piece
I’m so glad you made this video!!!
Great vid Jamal. Somebody get this man an electric impact driver.
Haha thanks Anthony! I did eventually end up whipping out my electric ratchet
Is there a shale color for this part?
I believe the part number is 22926559
Not sure about cadillac anymore. My 2019 cts has this problem and also my 2018 XT5 😞 I think maybe need to give Mercedes or Maserati a try 🤔 😅
dealer replaced mine samething happened a yr later!
How's it holding up so far?
Going to have to do this to my Vsport, thanks for posting.👍
Do you think its safe to remove the shade completely?
Yea, I don’t see how that would be an issue if you wanted to do that
Where did you get the shade from
GM Parts direct. The link is in the description
@@JamalsGarage my shade is tan do you know if it’s in the same website you got yours from ? I only saw the black one in the link

2016 with 60K miles
Wb 2020?
Thank you so much! Cheers from Dallas!!
Thank you for a great video!
Where are you located?
DFW, TX
@JamalsGarage daum if you were in NY I would pay you to do mine!
What causes this to happen?
Crappy adhesive that adheres the cloth to the rollers that wears down over time and with heat
great job I just purchase one and its been removed I see thanks for the video.
Awesome job bro!!
If I attempted to do this, I'm sure I'd probably cause bigger problems and break things. So, I'm one of those that would have to have it done for me I guess. Maybe I can just drive around without the cover? Good video though and sorry you hade to learn the hard way :(
I cannot see how a dealership can charge one $1500 for this. Pure robbery.
Yea that's what I thought too. I was surprised at how simple it was to remove. I was expecting it to be way worse
Good video, I really appreciate it
Great video 👍🏻 same exact thing happened to my v3. about a week ago

My 2015 impala. Anybody fixed it yet?
Big hug from me! Foreal. 🤗
Hey brother I started mods 👀 we spoke before we should meet up soon in Dallas
So did it take you the entire three weeks to stop swearing at yourself and smacking your head? Also did you clean out the sunroof drains while you had access to the hoses? Because that's the next thing to go wrong with the CTS sunroof they're known for drain clogs causing leaks in the roof and soaking the floor.
Haha yes, all of the above
My expensive bitch won’t close clip popped out
Can I fix this problem without replacing the whole thing… thanks superstar😊
