The Who, Woodstock 1969 - Pete's closing solo

  • The Who's closing performance at Woodstock 1969, which includes Townshend's classic stage performance at the end. This embodies all that is rock, and is the best example of how Townshend in his prime was a no-bull guitar player raging with energy and absolute dominance on stage. This is one of the earliest flourishes of punk in my opinion.

Entwistle adds punch with his distorted bass at :36. Then jumps in at each interval as Pete smashes his guitar from :55 on. Man, he was so vital to this band. Between all the studio arrangements and little things like this, The Who didn't work without him.

Agreed.... probably best ending to a rock show ever. The white boiler suit get-up that Townshend has on is brilliant. A bit of a middle finger to the hippies and sort of the beginning of punk. Thanks for posting this bit.

Yeah man it was a hell of an experience.I was there for the whole 3 day event just below the main stage. At the tender age of 16 my father was a carpenter/stage-hand for the festival and I was allowed to hang out close to the stage so my father could keep a close eye on me.Most my time was spent in the photo-pit and at the end of every set I was allowed to come up on the stage as my father worked to prepare for the next act.Amazing, I'll never forget it. Hoffman incident, haha funny as hell.

I'm going to ignore all the BS comments and say that this one moment in Woodstock history is monumental! I've watched so many videos of this epic music festival and this is the ONE moment I always come back to. When Townshend puts his foot up on Moons drum kit and strums those clean F,C,&G chords after all that distortion and HIWATT mayhem, that just says it all! Every year around AUG. 17th in the early morning hours, I listen to hear those chords echoing across these upstate NY hills, hopefully

It's on the second DVD disc.
You can tell that maybe a couple of frames may have been damaged so they did a segment of him using a stop and go technique that films him from behind before he throws the SG up in the air and gets down on one knee. Very well worth the watch because this clip has him shot from many multiple angles not used in the final print of the film.

@lestmbly Son, the guitar is owned by Hard Rock International. I have a friend who works for them. The guitar is kept in one of their vaults. They occasionally loan it out to museums or show it at various Hard Rock locations. So go one with your fantasy life! You might want to seek mental health before it's too late.
