I feel Black Caviar was a little hard done at 6th. 25 for 25 with 15 G1s is pretty hard to top. Also in the Diamond Jubilee race that was shown she tore 2 muscles in her back and still won, which is pretty insane to comprehend. Luke Nolen had to coast for the last 100, probably would've won 5+ lengths otherwise. Not to take anything away from the other horses, but you just can't top that.
Her record is amazing and she is the best sprinter I’ve ever seen. But i think that’s the problem. Most racing people outside Australia generally consider the important racing takes place between 1600 and 2400. Sprinting is not really considered that important outside Australia. In every other major racing nation (and in Australia before around the year 2000) the horses who win between 1600-2400 are considered the great horses. Maybe if her trainer had won 2 or 3 races at a mile like Vain and Manikato did she might have got a higher spot in the list.
By the way, I disagree with your assessment of her DJ win. I think she was fine until Nolen made her relax and then urgently pick up again 30m from the finish line. That’s the sort of event that would most likely cause that type of injury. There’s no other obvious point in the race where she is bumped by another horse or stumbles or breaks stride. I think the trainer got her preparation wrong and the jockey got the ride wrong and when she started to relax she was suddenly and unexpectedly asked to make another effort. Classic scenario for a muscle injury. I agree she should have won by 3+ lengths but not for the same reasons you do.
@@elgransenor1472 Your assessment of when the injury occurred has merit as a sudden bustle would make a case for a tear but Nolen said she didn’t feel right in running. Also she could have left it on the training track as she reportedly worked very well in the days before and horses can be over trained especially on unfamiliar courses . I’ll leave it up to the vets , injuries definitely not my expertise. However much as I would like to agree with you that she would have won by 3 plus I’ve watched the race several times and my assessment is that had Nolen not made that almost fatal blunder , (he admitted he didn’t see the challenges on the inside ) , the margin would only have been a length or so ,2 at the most . How far she was off her game is evidenced by the moderate former Aussie , Soul only a length behind in 4 th place . In Australia Soul would not get within 10 lengths of Black Caviar .
@@jakeg3296 I think Moody made two mistakes He shouldn’t have given her those two runs in Sth Australia, I think they flattened her followed by the travel I think that’s why she didn’t feel right to Nolen, she had gone over the top. @@elgransenor1472 From memory that year the King Stand a few days earlier was a bog track ? It improved a bit on the Saturday. She handled soft tracks in Australia but as you said soft Australia isn’t like soft UK . By the way what did you think of the So You Think / USA coincidence that I posted ?

And no mention of one of the all time greats, the filly Zarkava. !!!!!!! She retired the year they entered Sea the Stars in the Prix de L'arc De Triomphe in 2009 . Zarkava won the Prix De L'Arc in 2008 and everyone was hoping she'd take on Sea the Stars who went on to win the race in 2009 , but connections retired her and put her into stud. What a clash that would have been . Zarkava took on all Stallions in group ones and beat them all.

Canford Cliffs was one of my favourite horses but he was absolutely broken by Frankel at Goodwood, a stunning performance. He was a complete freak and we may well never see another like him.
@justthetruth1 people forget about Excellebration who for my money was a real specialist 7f horse. Frankel done him twice over that distance. If there was no Frankel we would've talked about Excellebration far more than he's mentioned now.
CC was such a good miler himself. When Frankel went through the gears in last furlong at Goodwood and CC hung all the way over the track it was sad cos at that moment we were watching a horse who was switched on enough to know it had to put more in to get at Frankel. But in doing so ran ragged and hung very tired. He was a 120+ rated horse made to look like a handicapper
I think you'll find that position is flattering for Winx. Not the horse's fault but from memory she raced 7 horses rated above 124 in her entire career. Also I love the call but she is not the greatest of all time in Australia. Tulloch rated 138 and Kingston Town rated 137 are the greatest of all time in Australia although I would have them the other way around. Tommy Smith could not split them.
The thing people don't realise with Winx, is that she could win on any surface, win in all different states eg Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney. And do all this while breaking track record times. 100% should be top 5...
@@masteryoda4073 You are so right. I think regardless of what the topic is, songs, horses, movies etc. ratings of best ever are a total load of garbage as they are based on personal opinion and are never ever correct. These types of lists really depend on what you value. The video maker definitely loves long turf races. If I made a list I doubt even 4 turf horses would be on it. And I think i'd have Gun Runner, American Pharaoh California Chrome on there somewhere
That's because you Americans are ignorant and self absorbed. There is great racing all around the world on TURF; and not on dirt. Horses from Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan. If anything, the Japanese and European champions are under represented in this Top 10.
American Pharaoh is Mr Prospector bloodline just like the majority of these horses in this video. I'm a pedigree buff. You have to understand what you're seeing. Go look up Mr. Prospector's wiki page and scroll down to stakes and triple crown influence.
@@abbenburnner4844 To be fair, most lists and videos in general focus almost entirely on American horses that are better on dirt than they are on turf, so this was just a different type of list.

I agree... I think she was most likely the greatest miler that's ever raced in Australia... had it not been for a. her unbeaten status and b. the fact that she had already experienced 2 potentially career ending injuries by her 5 race start...
The fastest & best performing horse to ever race in Australia & New Zealand was GLOAMING. His record is 67 starts for 57 wins & 9 seconds. The sole unplaced was when he fell a second after the start. And he still holds the 4 furlong(800m) record of 45 seconds.

Smarty Jones did more to increase interest in horse racing in the United States than any other horse this century. Smarty has left an indelible mark on the hearts of so many people, and he will never be forgotten.
He flopped at Stud though. You can breed him for only $3,500 today and he’s rather undesirable even at that low fee. The horse of the Century so far was absolutely Curlin. He won horse of the year two separate times, he pretty much exclusively ran in high stakes races with international horses with an 11-2-2 record from 16 starts, he amassed over $10,000,000 in race earnings, and at Stud he’s been an absolute rockstar currently taking in a rumored $225,000 per live foal

Black Caviar is the best. This video only shows her worst race, where she had a tear in a hindquarter and still won. The only other time she didn't win easily was when she stumbled out of the barriers at Flemington and injured herself, but still won. It's harder to win sprint races easily, as you have less time to do so. She won 23 of her 25 races without ever looking troubled. She broke records, she carried record weights and broke records, she was literally as bomb proof as a horse comes. Her 10th start was her best win for mine, The Newmarket at Flemington over 1200m where she carried a record weight for a mare, broke the race record of 135 years, and had the race won with 400m still to go. A little known fact, she won her 18th start over 1400m in the Orr Stakes (never tested by nearly 4 lengths), and backed up a week later over 1000m in the Lightning Stakes, winning easily again. This is almost an impossible feat for a horse to achieve. Statistically for two years prior in Australia, only one horse had won over 1400m and then 1000m in consecutive weeks. It was in Kangaroo Island where racing is pretty much at an amateur level. Black Caviar did it easily in two group 1 races. That is insane. If you had to take to take one horse to win a race over any distance to save your life, you would take Black Caviar over 1200m. Simply unbeatable.

I agree mate 100%...what a world class horse Sea The Stars was. Also, I think So You Think fits into the top 10 as well somewhere. He won five Group 1s in both hemispheres, that has never been done before or since by any horse in the history of racing. He raced in six countries: Australia, England, Ireland, France, USA and Dubai. He raced on turf, dirt and tapeta and was stretched out to 2400m (4th in an Arc when ridden horribly) and 3rd in the Melbourne Cup at 3200m. A world class horse but also so very very tough.
A curious Top 10. All of them actual horse races and all featuring sprinters. Not one detail regarding their record, over what distance, against who - and the time etc! Black Caviar was never beaten in all of her starts, Winx had a great unbeaten run so both of these are great horses. The best of the lot was never mentioned - Makybe Diva - and her resume included three Melbourne Cups in a row and that was against internationals as well.
They seem to be going for the heart thumping, blood pounding, breakneck performances. Makybe Diva earned almost 50% more than Black Caviar with only 30% more races. Winx has earned 45% more than Makybe Diva with only 16% more races. In seems horse racing in not in the maths but in the heart. ^_^
I'd forgotten to some extent how good Dubai Millenium's race in the Dubai Cup was. An absolute monster episode. A well earned number two placing on this list. Sadly, no footage of Sea the Stars.
2 points Black Caviar’s best race was probably when she won the Newmarket Handicap @ Flemington. A mare Carrying 58kg, won easy & broke the track record. It was the only day they fully wound her up & let her go. Also feel that Atlantic Jewel was just as good as her & Winx but we only saw a fragment of what she was capable of, injury ruined her career.
Agree that these top 10s purely based on opinion. We can all agree they are top horses and we'll all have our favourites. One horse no one has mentioned is Lys Gracieux. Won the Takarazuka Kinen in July 2019, then was absolutely dominant in Cox Plate and finally won Arima Kinen by 5 lengths. Wowee!
5 Lengths! I love it when horses run like that. I wish all the people who say horse racing is cruel could see some of these winners. Yes, maybe it is cruel sometimes, wherever humans go there is sure to be corruption and greed. But when you see an awesome racer, you know horses run because they love it too. 💗
Horse opinions aside, surely this video proves Australian race tracks reign supreme. Do Australian tracks get more attention than others? I suspect the detrimental climate requires it.
Agree. She whipped the girls and boys. She should have won the classic again in 2010 but Mike smith got her going too late Rachel Alexandra should be in this list too
Zenyatta was the best horse ever Secretariat on Michael Jordan for sure but Zenyatta she was the queen of the Nile the king of the jungle Godzilla Frankenstein and Cinderella all rolled into one to me she’s the greatest was male or female ever sorry Secretaria no offense meant
Really decent list. People will still complain because there's several other great horses that could've and probably should've been on this list. Without trying to sound like I'm complaining, if I had to name just one that was overlooked it would probably be Goldikova. In 27 career starts she only finished out of the money one time, finishing her career with a record of 27-17-6-3. Though based in France, she also raced in England and the United States. She won 14 Group 1 races, with 9 victories over colts & geldings, putting her above Miesque as the only European-trained horse to have ever won more than 10 Group 1 races. Which included 3 straight Breeders Cup Mile wins in 2008, 2009, & 2010.
I’ll go along with the 1,2 and 3 but I’m not having the others. Galileo, Hawkwing, Battash are just 3 without having to think about it. Zenyatta is fair enough as well. I’ve just thought of another one. Kingman.
It's very hard to compare across continents. I was also not sure about Arrogate. At his best he was one of the best, but he became nothing after running in the Middle East, not the only horse whose form badly regressed upon returning to North America (not sure how European horses who travelled there did when they came back).
Indeed, top two horses so far have definitely been Frankel and American Pharoah. Both would be canon fodder for the all time GOAT Secretariat (Beyers 139, unofficial Timeform 153), but at least he might notice they were there for a moment or two.
American horses full of Drugs .. BB proved that … unfortunately US horses can only win on dirt they don’t seem to do so well on turf that’s why you don’t see them in Europe ,Australia or Japan
@@deanwatson1430 US horses barely run on turf. The issue they have historically is dealing not so much with turf but with undulating turf, i.e. the jockeys don't have experience in letting their horses run down slopes which part explains previous poor USA performance at The Arc. Having said that the GOAT Secretariat had no problem adapting to turf, setting track record and winning margin records that still stand today in North America's then top two turf races against older horses. Dirt accentuates endurance and hence leaner horse like Kelso tend to have an edge there. Muscular horses like Secretariat are actually better adapted to turf which accentuates speed more.
@@connorduke4619 that’s exactly the point , when US have to clutch at a horse from 50 years ago 😬 as only horse to adapt to turf that kinda tells the exact point I’m making. Breeders cup is mainly dirt and attracts world horses merely for money. Quite often European / Aus or Japanese horses win the turf races. What’s also interesting is US horses when they go to the World Cup in Dubai (on dirt) rarely do well only a couple of exceptions but with all the doping and drugs in US horse racing it’s hardly surprising. Rules around drugs in horses much stricter than in the US which is reason why they don’t run anywhere else. Won’t be long before US horses banned from running anywhere else because of the huge drug problem … you only have to ask trainers (who left the US) how bad it actually is !!

Winx won 33 in a row, 25 group ones, 7th is a disgrace!

You could jumble the positions around from 2 to 10, but only one horse can be number 1......FRANKEL!. He would destroy all of these from 8 to 10 furlongs. He had an amazing cruising speed. Some of these have earned the "great racehorse" tag, but have not nearly enough in their armour to have troubled Frankel.
Nah, he ran his whole career in the minor leagues. Group I isn't anywhere close to Grade I.
@@larking13 I really find it hard to take American racing seriously. Your horses, racetracks, and trainers are inferior to Europe. Your jockeys are no better or worse than ours.
Winx was the best horse I have seen in my life.
Winning 25 Group 1's from 1400 to 2200 meters and the discrepancy between Frankel's ratings to Winx is an absolute joke.
How would you compare Secretariat to Frankel?
@@Durga-ma Secretariat was a dirt horse, Frankel was a turf horse.
Love Zenyatta! 🥰
Winx and Black Caviar What superstars.
All time Winx
Lots of races I haven't seen before on here. I was really shocked at the way Tom Queally beat, no other word for it, Twice Over in the final stages of the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic.....
That comment shows how ignorant you are, no horses are beaten when they use a air cushioned piece of foam. The term ' whip ' is a misnomer...
Dubai millennium was a monster no doubt? agree with the first 3 placings in this list only
Which ever horse I'm sitting on is number one in my book.
So many great horses we all

How Enable was only rated 125 is beyond me. The same as Winx. She won two arcs! These vids should be done on ratings imo.
Enable was racing against poorer horses than Winx as the IFHA determined correctly. Winx was rated at 130 by same organization. When Enable won her second Arc and Breeders' Cup in the same year her rating did not move from 125!

The audacity not to have Kauto Star in this list
American Pharoah, California Chrome, Chautauqua, Stradivarius, Ghaiyyath, Battaash, Curlin, Invasor, many more…
Pharoah maybe, Arrogate was far better than CC and deservedly got mention. Chataqua was an enigma, spectacular yes, but top 10? Strad a legend, no harm done in anyone's top 10. Ghaiyyath trailblazer but not better than No.10 in the list, Enable. Battasash lost to Blue Point at his peak, every time at Ascot.
Not totally surprised by the list as it weighs in on a lot of international racehorses. But a little miffed for a lack of love for American Pharoah. Maybe because he was just a 3 yr old as he ended his career. Well, hopefully they think of him at #11 if not in the top ten.
Arrogate is the best

Simply breathtaking.
Zenyatta is the best closer to ever grace a track, *** ever.
Obviously never seen chautauqua
@@TeQzElementzz A sprinter is a bit different than a closer at a classic distance who is 30 lengths behind past the half. Mine that Bird showed us how to close a race. When he won the Derby, he wasn't even picked up by the camera. That's how far off the pace he was. I think Z misjudged the finish line in her last race. It was dark and the lights can change a horse's perception. She was far behind too long to close in the 2010 BC. Hats off to Chautauqua for his rare feats sprinting. It's no less special, but apples and oranges in racing.
Wow. . .really great race 😅😅😅super amazing😅😅😅😁😁😁
Zenyatta it's incredible.
Enabled should be ahead of Arrogate and Black Caviar on the list, every day of the week, Zenyatta reminded me of Arazi winning the juvenile, coming from way behind and blasting the field by 11 lengths. The jockey on Black Caviar was so lucky not to throw the race, cause he would have gotten a 6 month ban, the jockey on the horse Arrogate beat, he lost that race, terrible jockey ride. Amazing that owner Khalid Abdulla have 3 horses on the list. Frankel simply the best EVER!
Where is Zarkava in this list?
"Sea the Stars" Won everything incl £2,000 guineas, Epsom Derby & the Arc in the same year (2009). !!😮Easily no. 1.
This is heavily tilted toward European grass horses but if you are going to include American dirt horses then Ghostzapper has to be the top since he is the best American dirt horse of the 21st century imo.
I mean ghostzapper 5 grade 1s in America...
Enable (10 on the list) 14 grade 1s in 3 different counties including beating all the American horses in their back yard.. the going to France and winning the larc de triomphe twice... come off it
Black caviar above enable you know nothing about horse racing...

“Realistically the only way Frankel and Black Caviar would ever meet would be in a bar, and then go home and make love.”
I wonder how many of these horses won 25 group one races like Winx?? I firmly believe Winx would have given Frankel the race of his life. Being number 7 is a bit of a joke!
Don't be ridiculous, she wouldn't have beaten some of the horses Frankel left in his wake, Canford Cliffs, Cirus De Anglis, St Nichols Abbey, Nathaniel, Excellebration - its a bit of a joke she made the list TBH.
@@mylesohagan2779 obviously stuck in a English fairyland. Other countries also have talented horses. Won 25 group one races and not once did a horse even come close to beating her. But I suppose you will say she was just lucky.
@@dommcrobert6673 half the horses I mentioned are not English, some of them also won G1s all over the world, there is no doubt Winx was a class filly but the fact remains she never competed against the very top horses of her generation so she shouldn't be classed as a global great, never mind being mentioned in the same breath as Frankel.
Look at Love, beat everything she raced against out of sight last year, opened this year winng a G1 by beating a breeders cup winner, but when she took on the real top class horses she was found out, I suspect Winx would also have been found out against the very best European horses of her generation.
@@mylesohagan2779 It obvious you don't understand Australian racing. We have had group one winners from England and France come over here to compete in our big races. None of them even came close to beating Winx. Local people urge owners to take the horse to England but because she was a poor traveller she never went. Just because she had no opportunity to compete against the best, does not mean she was just a local donkey. She is the best I have seen and I have followed racing for 40 plus years.
@@dommcrobert6673 come on, the best we sent over to face Winx was Highland Reel, a decent G1 horse in Europe, but who was a long way short of the best horses in Europe at the time, Hartnell was highly tried in the UK but couldn't land a G3, Benbatl has never won a G1 in Europe, more recently, we've sent over bang average horses who were getting hammered in G1/G2 races to take Australias big prizes, Sir Dragonet and Anthony Van Dycke, Addyeb is top horse on heavy ground, but again, has been out of sight on many occasions by Europes top horses - the standard in Aus is simply not anywhere near Irish/UK/French standard so Winx's record needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, and given the form lines it is ridiculous to suggest she'd have got anywhere near Frankel.
God frankel was insane. Winx will always be the best in my opinion.
And Makybe Diva...
The problem with Winx is that time and time again Aussie form is proven as useless, just look at Dubai Honour sent to Aus recently and mops up a couple of Group 1s with ease, comes back to the UK and gets absolutely trounced dead last and never competitive, he's a Group 3 horse at best, but he's winning AUS G1's for fun, anything past 5f in Aus is a mickey mouse race
Secretariat has to be with these great horse. Maybe the best ever.
The title said 21st century.. also I guess Sea Biscuit is the best ever simply because.. he is not supposed to be a racehorse. But instead beat a Triple Crown Champ in War Admiral. How about that? 🇵🇭
