@LilA-zl6tf I race, and the whip is needed to keep the horse focused and keep it going. The padded whip does not hurt the horse as much as the old type of race whip
Thats was amazing, pacing in rear for almost entire run and then making the move at the right time. You almost think he waited too late like the movie Boys in the Boat did for their Olympic run. Well done ! I tip my hat and bow to your epic run!
The title is a misrepresentation, it was the jockey's strategy to stay behind.. The race was 2 miles, 3 furlongs, with hurdles. Pays to save energy and stay away from trouble. And you must have the jockey and horse that can do it. A fun race to watch.
The winning jockey rode on the outside during the middle of the race on the firmer and faster part of the track.....excellent ride. I bet that jockey knows that track well.
Agree. He let the horse be comfortable. Also, he might have trailed, but he was never that far from the pack when he made his run. As the caller said, he just needed to sustain in the final furlongs (and the early tactics paid off).

@@patriciakimber4312" Horses die racing every day " Yes they do, but mostly of old age. Horse fatalities during racing are rare. Race horses, just like greyhounds, hunting dogs etc , are bred and trained to run fast and hard, it's in their blood, they love it.....or do you think that a horse or dog left alone in a paddock or back yard for 6 days per week on crap feed and then given 2 hours of "play" on Saturday is happier or more content than a race horse who is fed the best, trained daily to be the best taken care of by the best and competes for a few years then retires to bred until old age? I bet that thoroughbred horse would choose racing over boredom.
"That looks like a brutal race. Those horses looked absolutely exhausted at the end." That's the point, it's a race. and human athletes who run races are absolutely exhausted at the end of a middle distance running race too.
You can see on the first lap that he was watching how the ground was cutting up and clearly choosing the best ground to save energy. Jumps not my thing but a very clever ride.
Wow! I kept watching to see what was so special about this race, then I saw the red and yellow starting to move... wow what a ride. Just sat back there till time to make the move.
Wow, well done Gavin, best I've seen in years. Most would have pulled up Hedera Park halfway around the track...congratulations to you and Hedera Park.
I'm not sure it was so much the jockey. The horse was sort of asleep at first, but soon as the horse made contact with the field again, he got excited and decided he wanted to get involved. The more he advanced, the more enthusiastically he ran.
"Jockey refused to give up!" What kind of nonsense is this? He settled him out the back and the horse was always travelling well. I swear the people who write these captions don't have the first clue about racing.
I agree, he hacked around until 4 furlongs out before jockey got serious with him, experienced jockey knew about the long run in at Chepstow on soft ground, a very good ride though, cool and confident
He knew his horse perfectly holding her back so everyone just ignored him! The about 3 fulongs to go he gives her her head and she is OFF! absolutely SUPERB WIN. I should have put 1000 to win on Hedera Park!
I don't claim to be a horseracing expert but I have noticed that, for about three-quarters of a typical race, the horses are hacking along. It is only at the 75% mark that the jockey has to assess whether his or her mount can accelerate into full pace just a bit earlier than the rest. However, this was a pretty startling example of this rule of thumb, as the winner started scything through the field as they were still going around the final bend.
Terrific strategic ride. I always find it amazing how race announcers can remember the horses and riders' names race to race. I have trouble keeping my children and pets' names straight!😊
For any Cheltenham punters look very closely at Chepstow form. I did Norton’s Coin but didn’t take the the 500/1 in the morning on my lucky 15. He came in at 250/1 but a lovely pay day. The bookies asked if I’d take a cheque! My answer? Did I give you a cheque? Out came the bag man. Norton’s Coin had fantastic form at Chepstow.
He was never giving up. That was the strategy. Gavin knew the horse could run from the back. Some horses are born leaders and it's quite obvious that Hedera Park wanted to run up front. Great race for the pair.
I wouldn't have bet this horse in running, but four fence's out he really looked good, you can never count your money in racing until they past the line, it's part of the excitement
This is a brilliant ride. For another brilliant ride watch Kiwi in the 1983 Melbourne Cup where Jimmy Cassidy took him from last to first in the length of the home straight and he won going away!
Jockey who knows how his horse works , simply economical running, staying out of trouble , looked like he kept in on the firmer grass and just let it loose at the right time , perfect strategy !
the best part of that ride was Sheehan keeping his head and letting the horse alone to get over the last two, rather than trying to pinch a stride - a loose horse never falls. Great effort by horse and rider.
Good ride patient. Plenty of the other jockeys would have pulled up. Has the course changed at Cheptow? The hurdles seem different I'm not sure I like it 😕
That's one of the most amazing runs I have ever seen. I don't want to take anything away from the rider, but this looked very much like a race where the horse mentally took control after, initially, looking rather disinterested! I just hope it will recover from it!
Unbelievable! That was absolutely stunning.
I can't stop laughing! Amazing stuff
No, it was absolutely fixed.
Watch the Australian horse Winx. She would do this every single race.
Absolutely incredible ride, a joy to watch, well done Gavin.
Unbelievable 😮jockey and horse just never give up. Exactly what you want to see. Hats off to you both.
Horse travelled really well even when adrift of field in early stages of race
THIS IS racing at its finest. NEVER GIVE UP!!!
Gee I can get my breath back now. 🫣🫣 what an amazing horse and its rider.Certainly a breathtaking finish.🤗🥰🦘🦘
How to kill horses. Too much for them!
He'll never forget that win!! What a ride from a rider
What a run from the horse!
@@stephanieyee9784 I just wish they could trust the horse without the whip.
And yet we see this strategy all the time, so it amazes me that people are amazed.
Genial el jockey!!!! Guardó la energía de su caballo para el último tramo!!!! Sabiduría de un buen conocedor de la resistencia de su caballo!!!
@LilA-zl6tf I race, and the whip is needed to keep the horse focused and keep it going. The padded whip does not hurt the horse as much as the old type of race whip
Sheehan and the horse take a BOW. Just brilliant.
Beautiful/wonderful ride. I love Horses and jockeys coming from the clouds to win.
Love a horse that runs from the back - just like Chautauqua! So exciting and you feel the horse just loves it.
Not at all!
It makes for better spectacle, that's for sure.

The best ride so far for the jumping season and what a price too I wish all of us had horses like that winning. Well done
Brilliant strategy. Had a pleasant gallopmost of the way and THEN put the throttle down.
i am from the Philippines.. what a heart that the horse and the jockey have.. amazing..
Wow, what a beautiful and considerate ride by Gavin Sheehan.

Gavin Was Smooth As Silk!! Never Give Up On Winning!!
It was planned that way
Gavin is a fine horseman. His ride on Hewick in the King George was something else as well
Wdym his horse was flat to the board but found more from nowhere Wssnt a great ride at all his horse travelled awfully and got him out the shit

A fantastic show of faith in your steed, and patience in the ride.

yes because the animals don't have a choice to race or not. It's all about money, greed and cruelty.

Sounds like flat top from snatch!
Very clever. Noticed how he went for the fresh ground.

Great ride. Didn’t panic, didn’t give up . He gave the horse a chance and reaped the reward.

that horse power and stamina is incredible ! that jockey really have full confidence in that horse.
Good tactics, they went to fast in testing conditions, and he stayed the best after saving all the energy in the early part of the race !
