Referring to 6:40 I saw a video explaining that NSMB for the DS had a similar situation because it's possible that you could use the Mega Mushroom to clear out part of the staircase by the flag except for the end, so the devs put invisible blocks to make it so you could still go over after breaking half the stairs. Incredible attention to detail.
Something to mention for the common softlock 2:56. Not just semisolids, but this also applies with cloud blocks, mushroom platforms, and one way walls (unless it's facing up). Also, it won't be a softlock if the level is underwater or castle(night)). Edit: I forgot to add One Way Walls Edit: Remove Donut blocks which doesn't cause the softlock
5:38 You can actually do a very precise jump and twirl to get through the narrow section. If you crouch jump and twirl at the right time you will make it through, it is very tight but possible.
I noticed when he was talking about the pit softlocks, he switched to Kid Icarus music. And whenever he said pit, he pit a picture of Pit in the bottom corner. And when mario died in that section, he put Pit saying, "I never learned how to read!" Nice.
this video's reminder of what the definition of a softlock is makes me feel so much better now i remember there was a segment in one of my castle levels that included a claw and an on/off block; the claw was above lava, keep in mind i saw a comment in the same level saying that if they missed the claw, they get softlocked. naturally, slightly younger me had constantly panicked about this and always kept it in mind ever since i saw the comment, as i believed that the mechanic i used in the level did, potentially, "softlock" someome until i came across this video and they defined what a softlock truely was, and, remembering my level had lava underneath that could easily be reached, was deemed not a softlock thank you for clearing a thought that has been on my mind for probably more than a year
14:00 You could make the room slightly larger and place a Pipe that spawns Dry Bones Shells so that no matter how many Shells they throw away they will have another one.
That Mega Mushroom staircase softlock reminded me how much better the Mega Mushroom is in SMM1. Mustached enemies aside, breaking through walls in addition to ground below you was so much better.
I agree so much, then again though I have noticed less smm2 levels that require you to ram through thousands of blocks as big mario to the side so maybe some good game from that
11:45 I had a situation similar to that in my level. You had to do different challenges to collect different red coins, and there was a warp box, then a red coin, then a locked warp box when you enter my boss fight. If you had collected all the other red coins first (which most people did, but I didn’t during playtesting) you would immediately get the last red coin, get the key, teleport through the locked warp box and be outside the boss fight with 0 red coins. What you were supposed to do was come in through the warp box, collect a red coin, go to the other side of the room to get a key, come back and leave through the locked warp box. The problem was so severe that I had to delete the level and reupload it with the soft lock fixed, by having you activate a P Switch at the other side of the room and going through some P Blocks at the part of the room you first entered at to get to a warp box. I did take the opportunity to fix some parts of the level that I didn’t like, though, so all in all it was a net positive experience, it didn’t have that many likes or plays before I deleted it anyways. Edit: Typos Edit 2: More Typos, but I lost a heart from Odyssey Central :(

Multiplayer exclusive softlocks (usually caused by stuff respawning when it shouldn't, reset doors not functioning properly, rising lava/poison challenges not giving the player enough time to respawn and get moving before they die, and so on) are just the worst, because they're incredibly difficult to test for and sometimes there's just nothing you can do about them without removing or heavily altering the challenge or gimmick of the level.
Great video! I thought of some other way to remove softlocks that weren’t mentioned. Getting trapped on a semi solid on top of the screen. If you can’t wall it off or make a walk off for the design or theme you’re going for put a bunch of invisible question blocks up top. Unless the player finds a way up you’ll never see it. Getting stuck in a small passage as big Mario. Just add a spike block above the door. If they happen to be big they are able to take damage. P Balloons are able to enter pipes mid air. This is similar to the frog suit problem. You could add a reset door to give you another shot. You could have a pipe dispensing P Balloons. Or you could have a two state block in front of the pipe if it’s a timer challenge that activates once the challenge is complete. Another generic softlock preventing tip is to just place spike blocks that are always reachable wherever you are. Granted doing a forced SD isn’t good and you should look for a way to prevent it but if you happen to miss something it’s better than the alternative.
There's another softlock with the master sword. If Link puts a bomb over the on/off switch hits it with his arrow and goes in the on/off blocks. The bomb explodes and the on/off blocks become solid and you get softlocked. This can also lead to cheese

Softlocks are very annoying, one of my levels in a video on my channel previously had a softlock from a clear condition. It was my pacman level that required to collect every coin in the maze and had a point of no return back to the maze after leaving it and going to the goal. So if a player went to the goal without grabbing every coin before, they would be softlocked at the goal from a incomplete clear condition and there was no death area or a way back. I don't think it bothered many players as my level got lots of plays and likes, I didn't realise this softlock until after a while and it bothered me as a level designer that likes everything to be perfect and not have any forms of traps. I deleted the level from course world to edit out the softlock by adding a reset door by the goal back to the beginning of the maze which worked and I usually do a lot of play testing for perfection. Then reuploaded but was so gutted to lose a ton of maker points and likes over a softlock I couldn't get over being in my level. But now I am 100% happy with my level now being free from any softlocks.

And I'm really glad you pointed out the misuse of the word softlock, I see so many comments on UA-cam saying "softlock, boo" on player's levels that contain no softlock. Either there was an option to die (like on person's level had something you had to do in a certain time, and if it wasn't done you couldn't progress, but there was an option to die) or they get caught on something that ends up having a way out, but it might be a puzzle or something they have to do to make something mover or happen
My most recent multiplayer versus level uses a winged Muncher on a track to crush a lit Bob-omb. The Bob-omb's explosion triggers a ON/OFF switch which turns on the Blue blocks while making the red blocks turn off to allow the players to begin the course. This allows a Thwomp at the end of the level to slam the ON/OFF switch as the player runs below it which turns off the blue block covering the flagpole. The blue blocks spawn block the bob-omb while the red blocks crush the Thwomp once it hits the ON/OFF switch. This prevents both ON/OFF switches from accidentally being triggered more than once to avoid potential softlocks.
I have one that I used in my level so here you go: If a puzzle is based on On/Off blocks, if you want to prevent the level from being easier if the Switch was previously On/Off here is what you can do. For the example lets say the puzzle is easier if the On/Off Switch is set to On. What you can do is to place a thuomp that is inside a 2x2 gap and the wall is a On/Off Switch depending on the side the player is in and make sure the thuomp is in range to detect you. inside the thwomp gap you can place block that an off/blue block (basically the block that is going to stop the thuomp from being spawned should be the color of the block you want the puzzle to start with) so that if the Switch is set to Off then the thuomp wont be there to change i t(basically the block that is going to stop the thuomp from being spawned should be the color of the block you want the puzzle to start with), but if the Switch is set to On the thuomp does spawn and switches the Block. also make sure that the block is inside the space with the thuomp since if you switch it the thuomp would be able to change the Switch.

Fun fact: in 4:07 , you can see pit from super smash brothers at the right corner of the screen whenever oddysey says "pit"
It’s kid icarus
Meh, im not really that good at nintendo characters
In my levels when I'm playtesting and I encounter a softlock I take the secret approach
I have one that I used in my level so here you go:
If a puzzle is based on On/Off blocks, if you want to prevent the level from being easier if the Switch was previously On/Off here is what you can do.
“Even if the player would have to be so incredibly stupid to get softlocked”
Me, who is possibly the worst Mario Maker player in the history of video games:
Now this looks like a job for me
this was actually really helpful! Thank you for the tips, and i will make sure to test these things the next time i test my levels.
11:04 JAJAJAJAJ XD
If youre in a pit lock, instead of activating all the hidden blocks and ruining your only chance of escaping, wait for an enemy to come in the pit and die.
Or you could put a pit power up 😂
