- Super Mario Maker 2 provides a lot of tools to build fun and creative levels, however with all these new additions comes to possibility of cheese. Cheese in super mario maker 2 is when a player beats a level in an unintended and easier way. It goes without saying that if you worked hard on a level you obviuosly don't want anyone to just cheese it without playing the level correctly so today I'm going to be going over some tips on how to avoid it. These included simple power up removers and preventions for some kaizo tricks like shell jumps and spring jumps in smm2.

No I really mean it.
For the shaft example, I would put a one way (facing up) and then place the spring under it, then jump up. And then, in case you mess up, make another shaft where the player would be able to retry the jump.

7:45 This I actually think is ok. Wall jumping with the item is tricky, and the segment isn't too terribly hard, so giving good players a way to skip it is cool. Skipping parts of a level can be good if it isn't too massive or too easy.

It's important to note that clouds can also be destroyed from above by picking them up using the SMB2 mushroom in the SMB1 style.

In the case of forest water cheese, change the theme to the night time forest theme, that way the water is still present but can’t be used to cheese the level since at night the water changes to poison which is an instant kill.
Now it becomes lava cheese if you add a dry bones shell
Sometimes it wouldn’t work because it doesn’t have the right ascetic.
You do kind of have a point there. But I actually quite like the apathetic of the night forest in the New Super Mario Bros U style. And the music issue can be loved by putting a soundtrack that overrides the theme’s background music. I actually did something like this in one of my levels. In the one where the main idea is the rising and falling tide of poison. I put the “Super Mario Sunshine” sound effect on Mario in order to block out the music box remix of the forest night theme. I will add that this type of cheese prevention likely wouldn’t work if you put dry bones shells that Mario can equip in your level, and the forest night themes does look ugly in the other styles. So there is that.
You did help me odyssey, I was play super Mario maker 1 at that moment, and I realized they could go back through the pipe, come back, and grab another shell to throw at enemy’s, defeating the purpose.

I feel like leaving in some cheese in a more traditional level leaves room for a player to explore or feel like they accomplished something, yes you should make it so they can’t skip the whole level but leaving in some small skips or work arounds leave room for different play throughs or speed runs. Just check your levels so there is still gameplay. At least that’s my view on more traditional levels.
Lex Bright Raven it’s kinda like nsmb wii in 6-5 where if you have a mini mushroom you can straight up skip the whole level by running on the water
That isn’t even cheese at that point since you WANT them to supposedly “cheese”.

The trick you used to get the spring to where it wasn't supposed to be was honestly more impressive than the challenge you bypassed by doing so, so honestly I'd just leave it in, the player deserves it.

Really great video, removing Cheese can be a really important part of your level since you give your players the experience you want them to have, but removing cheese is opitional and you shouldn't remove all of the cheese, something that makes players skip the whole level would, indeed, break your level and not give the players the right experience, but cheese allows players to play in their own way, that the creator didn't make, if it doesn't break a important part of the experience you could and probably should remove it, but, Cheese can allow players to take easier routes that you didn't expect, being something new and a path that they are taking by themselves, and not only that, but it also helps speedrunners and people who want to finish the level fast or have to, to do so faster. Not removing all cheese from your level can allow you to make a more unique experience to each player, because they make their own path by finding something that helps they pass the level easier, with that said, not all cheese should be kept, only the minor part that doesn't really affect the experience that you want to give to your players, however, a cheese that allows them to skip the whole level should indeed be removed.

Another bit of cheese i deal with is with a boss battle level i worked hard on. Basically i used chain chomps on top of bob-ombs to create a jumping bridge. I intended people to jump around on it to avoid dying from the poison on the night forest, but people are just staying on the Starting land and fighting the boss.
Immediately deleted it.
10:00 You can also make a P switch non-portable by hanging it from a ceiling (one of the demo stages actually does this), or by making a semi solid floor and placing the P switch one block below it, so that Mario can step on it, but not carry it.
The only purposes for low walls that I know of are intentionally hidden shortcuts, Trolls, and decorative purposes. Other wall types are again used for all of the previously mentioned. Although simple, this video overall teaches some pretty good basics for anti cheese! Nice Job!

A really good fix for if you don’t want somebody with a shell met / shell is after u could possibly have it on your head or in your hand make a door and put fish on tracks on both sides and the shell will get busted

Another common form of cheese are two-way warp pipes. Two-way warp pipes can be abused get an item not intended to be there to cheese a level. The answer is simple: put a one-way wall so that you can’t go back. Also maybe put walls around to be 100% two-way proof.
Or with the propeller suit one when you can fly over and skip bowser, you could also make it so you have a clear condition to defeat bowser

This video helped me remove cheese from my level because my level was an airship one and I had balloon mario in it and mario would go through a pipe and get the balloon power up but they could just go back into the pipe and fly across to the flag pole so I put a wall to stop them from flying across

11:05 You could also put a winged bonefish on tracks directly beside the player moving downward, they'll collide with the ground before damaging the player but if they're holding an item they'll collide with it and knock it out of your hands
I have a idea
1. Make a course
2. Make a “cheeseable”
3. Do on off blocks at the end of the blocked of course
4. Cover the flagpole in the on off blocks that spawn
5. This makes the player actually being required to do the level
I tried to make a mystery house style level in the 3D world style and I had to do an overly complex timer system where as small Mario you have to set off a koopa shell which breaks a brick in your path so you can’t skip setting the timer off and you can’t break the brick as small mario
