My friends………. I’m a 43yo French guy, I had the DandyDash, this car represents so much for me, so much… I upgraded it with some Nikko’s option parts, aluminum shocks, spikes tires… For the first time in my life I had this feeling to have almost a real proper RC car, but in fact it was REALLY a real one and a very good one. I have NEVER broken something on it, I’m just realizing it now… I was dreaming so much on the SuperSprint model and all the option parts who were listed into the manual… In France it was SO MUCH DIFFICULT to find these option parts… We only found one shop with my father in the city of Marseille who had few option parts, it was even not a RC shop, just an Electronics Repair shop who had these very precious expensive parts in a glass display case, I was CRAAAAZY watching this……………. I will remember this day all my life I swear, my first option upgrade parts, what an absolute treasure it was for the little boy I was (10-11yo, 1990-91, don’t remember the year exactly)……… Watching this video is shocking me so deeply I didn’t know about that BRAT upgrade !!!!!!!!!! I’m in love…………… Thank you so much for the video !! Big salut 🫡 from France ViNZ.
They sure did and the Brat was the best they did. 7 cells chassis, ball diffs, quality dampers, universal shafts, bearings… they weren’t mucking around.
They did a few! I’d say the nikko dictator was 90% of the way there. An outstanding chassis with good handling. Hobby swapped ones are competitive (at least in a neighborhood show down kind of way) against modern rc cars
Such a cool piece of RC history that most don’t know about. My friend who had everything as a kid got the 2 box kit and built his brat Christmas of 1989. It was a ripper
Wow never realised Nikko had ever made something so cool, proper sweet looking thing. Miles better looking than most other branded buggies of that era 👌👍👍
Entered into the 1989’ IFMAR here at St Ives, Sydney I only knew of the Brat from the pics that came to light in the Dirt & Track magazine. I thought it was a joke at the time of print but Nikko actually did a good job of creating a chassis worthy of competition. I raced this car at 2 of our very first vintage meetings. Sadly sold it long ago to a friend in a time of desperate need.
@@Bormac073 yeah it does look good quality 👍. I sold a few of my cars over the years and regret selling every one ☹️. Hope to see some future videos on this buggy👍
@@Bormac073 Oh of course because of the belt drive and that carbon pan chassis. I was just trying to say that I thought Nikko basically made an intermediate hobby grade 4wd with the Dandy Dash. This Brat in this video with belt drive and graphite chassis looked race quality.
@@henrywashington4212 it certainly was and that was the point of the video 😁. It was raced in the 1989 world IFMAR titles here in Australia against the worlds best drivers
I love seeing different 80' buggys that were around when Tamiya & Kyosho were in their hay day! It's a real shame they aren't about anymore as I'd definitely buy one 🙂 nice content Jason 👍
Thank you Wade. It definitely seems much of the audience out there on UA-cam aren’t fully aware of just how deep into vintage r/c I go. Im glad to get to all these models as they are near and dear to me.
Another great video Jason. I totally understand. I absolutely love my Brat and extremely lucky to have it. Actually just landed a super sprint and dandy dash as well so now my Nikko collection is complete.
Thank you Keith. There was a great story behind how I came across the S’sprint kit, brat kit & and all the nip parts. Raced and even found my good friend Ant his Brat, we had a blast racing these.
Cheers Glenn. Im one of the few fortunate enough and brave enough to race a Nikko Brat long before they became super expensive and mega fragile as the years ago the plastics. The car drove beautifully.
Those were the factory items my friend. With so many vintage buggies out there from many manufacturers Im sure there might be a couple that you like, it's all a part of the history and the fun. Glad to have you aboard
Thanks Andy. Yes the Nikko BRAT was such a hi-lite of my collection but a family move interstate and needing the money forced a few of my cars on to ebay back then. Now with a friend he’s not keen to allow it to return my way but at least I have these images and now some cool content to look back on.
Brad do you ever get to an off road electric buggy track? At our vintage meetings here in Australia we run silver can 540 Johnson motors and coupled with 2 cell Lipo these cars get around very quickly. Faster than the stock class back in the 80's and 90's would have been. If you have a look back through some of my event videos which I have up you will see examples of cars running. The Brat however has grown fragile over the years and although I raced mine nearly 15 years ago, today the plastics are too brittle.
Im unsure of where it placed. I was at the event but wasn't even aware Nikko made a competitive car at all. I saw photos in magazines afterwards and I thought it must have been a mistake 😂
@@Bormac073 I think it wS the first time nikko made an effort to become a big compative like tamiya and kyosho, it is sad that they don't re release some models, I have the sand eagle 2...
Yes definately wow MB. The Brat was a very capable buggy for the time and although I moved this on to a friend he simply wont allow it back to my collection now, so I has to create this memory.
So if you watched the video you’d understand the ‘BRAT’ upworks kit was used to upgrade the other Nikko kits. There were in fact 2 different upworks BRAT kits so depending on which Nikko buggy you started with would depend on which kit you needed. One thing is certain, for the time it was ground breaking for the company. There was even said to be a 2nd prototype which evolved from the car we know of.
When I first spied images in Dirt & Track of the Nikko at the 89 Ifmar world champs here in Aus, I thought ut was a prank. That seemed like forever ago.

ViNZ.
Nikko needs to bring back these cars. And bring those old semi hobby grade toy grade ones that are so memorable.
you'll find some of the most beautiful Nikkos in my videos. Enjoy.
I never knew that Nikko made hobby grade! Cool!
They sure did and the Brat was the best they did. 7 cells chassis, ball diffs, quality dampers, universal shafts, bearings… they weren’t mucking around.

That’s a serious looking Nikko..😍👍
The Brat was to be Nikko's premium racing machine
Great stuff again mate, very interesting buggy.
Who could have guessed Nikko could make such a creation

I thought the 1987 Wild Bull buggy was the most ambitious Nikko car. Until today😄 Very nice video. Thank you for sharing 👍🏼
Thank you Mario. It sure came as a surprise when the BRAT was at the 89' IFMAR world titles held at St Ives, Sydney Australia. I thought it was a gag.
sweet buggy! love the old stuff. even the toyish grade dictator was bad ass. almost hobby grade.
Hi Jerry. There's just so much stuff out there and the more we look the more we find. It's a fun hobby on many levels
I heard of the Dandy Dash, but thought it was something similar to a Tamiya Boomerang. This Brat is like a Super Shot. It's sweet!
For me it was a cross between a Tamiya 'SHOT' and a Yokomo YZ10 in some respects

I wish nikko would make hobby cars again. Like to see it run on a lipo.

You are right. The car has quite a cult following now days and almost any example is commanding ridiculous money now.
Hey Jason great work. Just wondering what the regret comment was about at the end of the video?
Hi Piers. A friend convinced me to sell it to him back when I was in a time of need. Sadly he wont allow it to come back to me.
I would love to see this car run.
I would love to still own one. I raced one at a few vintage meetings years ago. Was a cool experience

I'm surprised they didn't get in trouble with Tamiya for the name.
Yep. Weird idea

any footage of the race?
It was such a long time ago. Long before I owned a video camera
