I would certainly recommend popping into your local club and checking out the classes available. Even in vintage racing there are various classes - and you want to make sure you get something that fits into a popular class.
For vintage 2wd at our club the popular chassis are Kyosho Ultima, RC10, Losi jr, Schumacher Top Cat to name a few. In the Kyosho vintage class its filled with sciorpion, tomahawk, and beetles. What area are you based?
