What a boss. He monologues for 10 minutes straight and everyone hangs on his every word. Respect to Colbert for not interrupting.
It’s why he’s such a good interviewer - he doesn’t feel the need to make everything about him. He has his own segments, like the monologue, but the guest portion is about getting a good and entertaining interview. With Kevin Smith, the easiest way to do that is let him talk.
I know he is such a great storyteller.
@Honorable Catsmeat: According to whom? Because according to Kevin himself, he used to eat very sparingly during the day, but he would binge in the evening after he'd finished work. He's been pretty honest about his shitty diet before his heart attack, there's no need to try and pretend like you've caught him out just because you don't like him. (Plus he's gone vegan since he was in hospital, so no, he isn't gorging any processed meat.)

Respect for the unpaid author delivering this fancy monologue, I'd say.
You know what the crazy thing is? He managed the whole thing without cursing once. If you've seen anything else from this guy, you know this is like going camping in the woods and unexpectedly spotting the last living unicorn.
There's also one Q&A show he did, I think the one celebrating his 40th birthday, where at the beginning he says he wants to keep answers short so that as many people as possible get the chance to ask him something. The first guy comes up and asks his question and Kevin proceeds to answer for 2 hours straight and then the show's over.
I love how interviews with Kevin Smith are all like,

That is literally what happened in one of his Q&A's. It was more like an hour but still.
Literally all of his "Evenings with" shows are like this, they are supposed to be full on Q&A sessions with loads of people getting the opportunity to ask questions (and stand there listening to the answer) but invariably ends up with 3 people getting to ask questions and sitting on the carpet for 45 minutes listening to the answer lol

I had a heart transplant in 2016 in L.A. and it was hands down the worst thing I had ever gone through. My arteries and my groin are so overused as access ports they can’t access them at all anymore. I’m genuinely afraid of what will happen if I have have a big emergency. His story hit close to home. It’s hard being on the table with that flat panel so close to your face and people working down by your groin. It’s a scary situation. Now I just ask them to put me out if they have to check out the heart. It’s much easier to deal with
My dad had a heart attack and went through the same symptoms as Kevin down to smoking the weed and it's lovely seeing this get more recognition cause I was like him, wondering about the pain in the left side and my dad didn't have it either. This is good and should definitely be mandatory viewing.

Kevin Smith is a national treasure. He has such an infectious way about him that you just can't resist loving. Colbert knew to just let him go.
As a non-American, I submit that he's an INTERnational treasure, because I feel the need to declare my affection for him too. We can share him.
I love Stephen's face and reactions as Kevin tells the story. I also love how Stephen doesn't interrupt Kevin, but points to the clock showing they are running out of time.

I love how Stephen, near the end, pointed Kevin to the stage manager off-screen signaling to wrap up instead of flat out telling him on camera. Sort of like giving a comic the light so that the story can organically end.

I have a lot of affection for Kevin Smith. Not always for his films, which are a mixed bag, but as a raconteur man alive he deliver an off the cuff monologue like nobody else. Glad nothing bad happened to you big fella.
His Prince story is hilarious.
And he is very loyal to his friends.
I wouldn't really say his monologues are off the cuff. If you listen to as many of his other videos, podcasts and whatever, you'll have heard basically this exact monologue at least 50 times. He has this story memorized better than Broadway actors.

Man, he’s lost weight, gained energy, his vocal delivery no longer seems quite so anachronistic to his appearance, and he looks tons younger, who would’ve thought a heart attack could do someone so much good!?
Not all of it is because of the heart attack. He had lost a LOT of weight before he had the heart attack (he stopped having sugar according to the stand-up special he's promoting), but the heart attack helped him see how he was still being unhealthy.
He also went vegan to turn his health around. :) Great for him and the animals! 👍🏼
Fascinating, entertaining and even funny(though there isn't anything funny about a heart attack) interview from Kevin Smith. As a big fan of comics, I always liked Kevin Smith(who is a well-known fan of comics, Super Heroes and Super Hero movies and he has even written comic books). I'm glad he survived and I get that Kevin Smith had body shame issues and felt insecure about his body but the paramedics and the doctors have seen a lot and they are there to help and they saved his life. It's not like he's got something the paramedics and doctors haven't seen before.
They don't care about how fat he is(or was, fortunately) or how small his junk is, so I agree with the doctor's mind-set being that we don't have time for Smith's hang-ups about his body and that time is of the essence if we're going to keep this guy alive.
Its not surprising. Near death experiences usually have this effect.
2nd chance at redemption

Kevin is like Robin Williams: his mind goes faster than his mouth, and once it kicks in there is no way to stop it. I think he gets invited relatively little to mainstream talk-shows exactly because the host is basically guaranteed to be upstaged, and not every host is as humble as Colbert.
Three years I got to see Kevin Smith at the Comic Book Men panel at the New York Comic Con. It was the most surreal experience I ever had. He, point for point, described the entire hallway fight scene in Daredevil season 1. The fight scene where Matt saves the small child from the gang. It was incredible. I think I would have had a heart attack if we lost Kevin Smith.
Kevin is so brilliant- so glad he is still here with us making us laugh our asses off like he has the past 25 years. Best to you Kev!!

True! And now, more and more women are falling under the banner of being prone to heart attack. And stroke. Women don't think to ask their doctors about their heart health, or the risk of stroke. I am at risk for both, as I am very over weight, and there is heart decease and stroke in my family. Plus I don't handle stress well. I tend to worry about my lungs more, as I get very wheezy and prone to coughing fits when stressed. Or even just sitting. Almost like asthma, only it's not. I have terrified doctors with the sound of my lungs and blood pressure readings. Hey, a girl has to have SOME kind of talent!
Just saw Clerks III tonight in Tampa on his convenient tour...he was inspiring as well as Brian O'Halloran/Dante...this is exactly what happened in the movie. Very happy he lived to share this and save others.
I love how Colbert subtly indicated the time left on the interview at 8:47 without interrupting him so he wrapped up just at the right time! He just let him go through his entire story so that was able to say everything he wanted to. Riveting story told well. Great job!

Same! I had a massive heart attack in January. I didn't have arm pain. I was vomiting, sweating, but my elbows hurt like HELL! Like I was being beaten with a metal baseball bat. I died 12 times. They used 360 jewels to get me back. I felt the last one! Felt like being hit by lightning and all your insides caught on fire and exploded. So glad you're still here with us! Stay healthy!

It is, most of his shirts are (they have his own face on or logos for his podcasts/shows/movies). That one was a gift, though, from the cast and crew of Supergirl IIRC - he's directed a few episodes of the show, so he knows them. There's a pic on his insta of him just after he opened it along with the note they sent (they said something about how they'd have made him a Kryptonite heart, but it turned out that his heart wasn't his Kryptonite after all).

He went on the "potato diet", the same one that Penn Jillette did when he lost a bunch of weight.
where did you hear that? He went mostly vegetarian (he's vegan now), cut out sugar (if you know how much this man loves cereal you know that's a serious sacrifice) and lost about 90Lbs BEFORE the heart attack. His dad died from the exact same blockage and his mom has 6 stents. It's genetic and obviously poor diet didn't help but he has made huge strides with his health lately, so cut him some slack.

Kevin said that it almost happened but Jeff Anderson(Randall) is the roadblock because he doesn’t want to do the movie. So he had to pull the plug because Clerks doesn’t work without Randall.

That was kinda the joke. He's such a talkative guy so in the movies he played a silent character.
He originally wrote the lead character of 'Clerks' with the intent of playing it himself. But then it dawned on him that he'd have to memorize all the lines while also trying to direct and shoot the movie. So he decided to play Silent Bob instead. And here we are.
And it's even funnier when you think about how Jason Mewes plays the talkative Jay, but in real life, he's far more shy and quiet.

I’m 32 and had 1 last year... was mild and at the time nobody not even the medics at the time didn’t even consider that’s what it was at the time, they all just assumed I was dehydrated, which I told them I wasn’t I know what dehydration feels like I was sweating my ass off inside an A/C building

I was getting an E.K.G. for a routine checkup a few years ago, and had a pretty "funny" experience. The tech asked me if I felt alright after he started the test. I said yes, then asked why he asked. He said "No reason, I just need to speak to the doctor for a moment." That, as you can guess, raised some concerns. I demanded a copy of the readout, and sure enough, the message on the sheet said "Acute Myocardial Infarction." Heart attack in english.
I called the tech out on it, demanding to know why he didn't mention it and why nothing was being done. He told me "it's nothing. Old scar tissue can mess with the test and come up as a heart attack."
I'd, to my knowledge, NEVER had a heart attack before. I hadn't had surgery yet either. I wish I had remembered to mention that and demand to know WHAT scar tissue he was speaking of. It's fun to make doctors squirm when you know enough to call them on their bs, but it still bothers me that I didn't get anything more than a pat on the head and sent home.
It took going to ANOTHER hospital and getting a second opinion before the serious heart condition I had was corrected with surgery.
If you are ever unsure about a diagnosis, especially if you can see from test that something is wrong but are only getting the run around/pats on the head, go see another doctor. It can save your life.

Tech asked if you were ok to see if the readout and your physical experience matched. If you said "no", then time to ramp things up. You said "yes" which validated the thought that the test itself may have failed...which it does time to time.
They will *not* randomly in an EKG say "So, I think you're having a heart attack right now"...guess why that is?
Tech wanted to confer with the doctor to be thorough...if you're unsure, ask...*ESPECIALLY* when someone's life is on the line.
Doing a simple procedure such as an EKG doesn't require a full backlog of your medical history and scar tissue can form from a number of different past afflictions.
To clarify...you made a *tech* "squirm"...which, by the sounds of it, you didn't at all. They were following procedure.
You then went to another hospital...ok, second opinions are fine, but it sounds like you didn't even take the chance to speak with an *actual* heart specialist at the first hospital.
Summed up - adding fodder to the whole notion that patients know more about medical diagnoses and care than the experts who put years of their lives into studying for this specific reason.
"No telling how many lives you just saved"....if you *were* having a serious heart attack and booked like that (in that instance), you'd probably be dead...and so would anyone else who follows your "advice".

I had even been sent down to the Mayo clinic to have open heart surgery to correct it.
Unfortunately, because I wasn't able to stay down there until the day I was supposed to have surgery, the frog in charge of the cardiology department at the time decided he was going to stick his nose in.
Even though I had been informed of and shown the problem in my heart by no less than 3 eco cardiogram techs and 2 cardiologist, as well as the cardio surgen that was originally supposed to work on me, the frog claimed there was nothing wrong. He told me "there is nothing wrong with my heart, but the way my heart beats messes with my heart.". Or something like that.
I was bounced back up north to a cardiology department at a more local hospital where I ended up having several more e.k.g, echo cardiograms, and trans-esophogial ecos. Each time, they would pay me on the head and send me home. They did try Bata blockers though, but they not only started to lower my heart rate below 50bpm while resting (funny when you're sitting up on a hospital bed and can set off the heat monitor alarm enough that they come in and mute it...) but it also started to degrade my teeth.
Two years after being diagnosed with a heart problem that had already sent me to the hospital a few times and made it impossible for me to do litterally anything strenuousl without chest pains, and that e.k.g. was enough for me to stop putting up with their bullshit.
Long story short, if you know you're getting the run around, go somewhere else.
P.s. the tech never did another test to confirm if the test had fails. I was already hooked up and sitting there. What would have been the problem with hitting the button again to confirm? Also, he had to have some kind of medical training to do the test and he went to confer with the doc who DID have my medical history, so both your arguments are kind of moot.
P.p.s. also, I did make him squirm. He had the "oh shit" deer in the headlights look and everything.
P.p.p.s. I didn't book it. The tech sent me on my way as if everything were normal.
From your story, and your response to someone defending the poor technician. It seems you're more than a little rude, and self absorbed. Talking negatively about the tech and doctors as if you're the only patient they have. Its as if you dont even realize what it takes to work in the medical field and how the job of saving lives every single day can do to a person. On top of making mistakes and the MANY MANY patients they must cater to (not just you) they also sometimes have to deal with people like you. Its a damn shame how little respect you show them. Which appears to be none.

I mean, it was a running gag with online movie critics for a while that he's an outdated relic of the 90s... but no matter how true or not that is? He's a stellar personality and just a sweetheart. I really doubt that there exists a better interview among the world of directors.
He's done some awesome stuff in my book.
Kevin is a master of story telling.
I love it when one person can just make a room focus for about 10 minutes. Nothing exists outside of that story and that moment. They become a window and we are this lens of consciousness, looking inward toward their natural state of being.
The way they interact, the choices they make, and the words they speak (whether it's verbal or non verbal) all tell a story. One that often times becomes incredibly interesting to us.
The choices you make today, right now, could be a story to tell later.
