I feel like hes referring to the fact that normally the host asks questions and the guest answers. But in this case it was just the guest talking and not really letting the host ask questions. At least im just assuming thats what he meant.
An evening with Kevin Smith, watch it. His appearances at the Comic Con, watch it. I barely remember his movies, but I LOVE watching him talk. He's fucking likable as fuck.
this is a testiment to the awesomness that is stephen colbert. kevin is a talker, like a REAL talker and stephen just let's him go without ever losing the situation. 10/10
Search 'Kevin Smith Superman' (watch the long version) on here. Probably my favorite story by him. Also, look up his Prince story. It's hilarious. He's a master verbal storyteller.
I gained a huge amount of respect for Stephen Colbert for this interview. He recognized the beautiful amazing and funny energy of Kevin Smith and just let him talk. This never could have happened with hosts like Jay Leno, David Letterman, or Jimmy Fallon. I highly doubt even Conan O'Brien could have had the respect and the humble recognition necessary to keep from intervening and ruining it. Maybe Craig Ferguson could, but he was a rare man as well. I really hope Stephen Colbert makes it for decades to come. He's too talented to not be successful.
Yeah Craig Ferguson was a legend. I honestly wouldn't have guessed Colbert could have pulled this interview off either. He is really finally starting to hit his stride.
That is the mark of a great interviewer, when they can gauge the personality of their guest and modify the questions to what they are saying instead of what you already planned. Stephen is one of the best thinkers on his feet he can come up with stuff quickly.
i miss Craig. he was by far the best at getting his guests to open up and act like humans instead of advertising whatever project they were working on.
one of the most endearing and sincere and damn well was tearing up at the beginning he was so damn happy and gracious ass humans walking this earth man. bless you Mr. Smith.
Kevin Smith is one of the most fun people to follow on Facebook, and he's so very genuine and raw. But most importantly, he's exactly the kind of father I want to aspire to be when I have a kid. He's such a dorky dad and is unapologetic about how much he loves and boasts his daughter.
Kevin is the king of podcasting. I've been listening to smodcast, edumacation, Jay and Silent Bob Get Old, Talk Salad and Scrambled Eggs, and Hollywood Babble-On for years. He's literally my favorite living storyteller.
TESD has gotten pretty unbearable to listen to unfortunately. Brian alternates between bitching about absolutely nothing, complaining about the cushy life he fell ass-backwards into, and talking at length about topics he clearly doesn't understand. Seriously Brian, in what other universe can a lazy, uneducated nobody like you get handed a spot on an AMC show, by the same successful director friend you were crappy to and jealous of? He should be so humbled, but somehow he's still a bully. Q is hardly there anymore with the success of Impractical Jokers and is becoming harder to relate to as his fame and ego grow. Can't really blame him for enjoying it, but all he has to talk about is the last Jokers related event he was involved in. Walt is always Walt, and he's a pleasure to listen to, but he's gotten less able to rein Brian in and is perhaps less willing to bust balls. He's the only adult at the table. The ads he does at the beginning with his daughter are adorable though! He seems like a really great dad. TESD was best when it was three friends telling funny stories about how they grew up.
Wow, it's been a long time since I've smiled that hard. Dude definitely seemed a little nervous, and perhaps a little inexperienced, but the unrestrained enthusiasm he showed was incredibly refreshing.
Let me rephrase what I said a little, I meant inexperienced with regard to other directors and actors. He even admitted that himself at the beginning of this interview.
that's actually a partial joke to jay and silent bob. In real life kevin smith talks like crazy, has thousands of stories while jason mewes (Jay) is actually very quiet IRL
***** Bill Maher is available on his UA-cam channel, full hour or so. As for John Oliver, I'm not so sure they post whole show on his UA-cam channel. How long is it ?
Kevin Smith...,one of my kind of people. Great guy, great film-maker but most of all a great storyteller. When you are a "80s/90s kid" like me, then you know what i'm talking about.
It's so endearing how he's been in the business sooo long yet he still has this childlike vulnerability when he met Stephen. He's really kept himself super humble and it's refreshing. It's so rare...
I had the pleasure of actually watching Kevin in his element on stage at Supercon last year. And he's just amazing at how he eases you into his stories and you just sit back and enjoy it like Stephen in this video. That's another thing, good on Stephen for actually just letting Kevin speak. Not many talk show hosts I know of show restraint like here.
he did perfectly. you don't want to interrupt your guest. Kevin was jammin man and Stephen ain't gonna cut the track when the magic is flowin like that. ya feel?
+TheNightShadow I have to agree with previous comments, knowing when not to speak and just letting the magic happen was the way to go, but seriously nice Stranger Things reference! ::UA-cam HighFive::
Better than asking boring questions. He let Kevin go and only cut in to make sure Kevin got through everything he was there for before his time was up. Makes me miss Craig Ferguson's talk show, he got so many interesting stories out of his guests because he refused to follow format.
Kevin Smith is more than a director, actor or writer. You can see from this video before all of that, he's a fan. The excitement about being on this show is amazing. Think about it.. he's made plenty of movies and has met plenty of stars but the dude is literally about to cry because he's so excited. I love this guy. I wish there were more people like him on earth. Thanks for the video!
Stephen is the guy who doesn't want to push to far and Kevin is the guy who grabs Stephen and says "fuck that, we are doing this!" And drags him along. It's fantastic
Same here. Only thing I've ever really seen from him was The Flash episode he directed, and that was a great one. But from what I've heard his projects aren't fantastic. But fuck it, the guy is likable as shit and I want to meet him one day.
Exactly my feeling. I don't care for his movies, but I can tell they are awesome for those that do. But damn, I can listen to that man tell stories for hours and hours.
+Hovercraft recent projects aren't, but I'm a huge fan so I love it all even the schlock If you haven't seen any of his stuff I'd highly recommend clerks
2:19 is when Colbert realized that Kevin Smith basically interviewing himself was comic gold and let Smith take the wheel. Only a talented guy like Colbert would have that confidence in his guest. Mad respect.
I fucking love Kevin Smith! met him this past May and he's fucking awesome! he's so genuine and smart and kind and funny! I love him and not many people can say they had Kevin Smith give them a ten minute speech about following your dreams but I'm one of the lucky few
The really funny part is Colbert can be very manic and overtalky sometimes himself, but here he just played it super cool and gave in to the Smith monologue. Probably the safest bet ultimately.
One reason I love this Interview is, because Smith expresses, with his words and with his actions, and reactions, his love for Stephen, something I really want to do as well, so watching this I kinda like letting my inner Fangirl out, and just hugging him... twice ;)
It's so adorable how nervouse Kevin is because he idolizes Stephen Colbert. And the most amazing part is that Colbert is so nice to him and it just gives me all the feels 😄😄
I've watched this clip 4 times already in the past couple days (yeah I know, I'm late) -- definitely a favorite!! And I love how Stephen lets Kevin talk and talk without interruption, even his non-verbal attitude is just awesome. Gratz on a great interview! :)
It amazes me just how good Smith is at turning his profanity filter on without skipping a beat. I've been listening to SModcast since day one, and have been a fan of his films forever, and one thing that can definitely be said about the man is he knows how to fucking curse in ways that would make sailors blush, and to such an extent that it just seems like there's no shutting it off for him. Yet, in interviews like these, or when he's on terrestrial radio, he never even seems to have even a minor slip-up. That takes some serious skill, because as someone who swears a ton, too, it ain't always easy remembering when and where to turn it off.
Just had to have surgery over at the VA hospital, can't sleep (pain). THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! Totally took my mind off of it, great job guys. -UnbrokenVet
Sometimes I sit for 10 minutes and ponder Kevin Smith's location in the constellation of pop culture, and smile.
That would make a good video. ;)
holy its you awesome love your vids keep it up
Yeah im with chicken Big fan bro. And apparantly your a big fan of smith. Me to. lol
Big fan of your channel. Already got my best friend to subscribe. You set the standard for the video essay format.
Will you make a video about him? big fan btw
Holy fuck this was hilarious. Normally I'd be annoyed at someone talking the whole time, but Kevin Smith is just plain entertaining to listen to.
Why would you be annoyed at someone talking?
I feel like hes referring to the fact that normally the host asks questions and the guest answers. But in this case it was just the guest talking and not really letting the host ask questions. At least im just assuming thats what he meant.
An evening with Kevin Smith, watch it. His appearances at the Comic Con, watch it. I barely remember his movies, but I LOVE watching him talk. He's fucking likable as fuck.
He's an awesome story teller and if you like this listen to his podcasts!
His podcasts are consistently fucking hysterical. Give em a listen!
this is a testiment to the awesomness that is stephen colbert. kevin is a talker, like a REAL talker and stephen just let's him go without ever losing the situation. 10/10
Yep! 👍
Let´s say a testiment to the awesomeness of both. Then I´ll agree!
Reminded me of Letterman with Stern.
Not only that, Stephen looks very entertained just listening to Kevin. This video is a fun watch.
This interview is what I call the reverse Fallon.
lol ...Fallon is so fake.
Fallon: HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HA. HA. HA. That is so funny!
Brilliant lmao
Hahahaha ya, I would spend my whole life with Smith in a box than Fallon at all.
A+ comment
stephen was just like "ok take it i'm gonna watch and remember to plug your movie"
+Jesus Christ ey what you doing here I need me my prayers answered you lazy....
With a guy like Kev, who has little to no filter, that's all you can do.
so true haha
We just need a show with Kevin Smith telling stories and Colbert just sitting there reacting...
I'd buy that, everyone would buy that.
+
I would no joke watch that!!!!!
Yes please this!!
***** I am an avid Babbler! Love the show!!
I had no idea Kevin Smith was so adorable. He has this puppy-like energy to him.
Search 'Kevin Smith Superman' (watch the long version) on here. Probably my favorite story by him. Also, look up his Prince story. It's hilarious. He's a master verbal storyteller.
go watch him watching the flash
Listen to some of his podcasts. He is basically a kid with ADHD thats stoned a lot. Really entertaining to just listen to.
lmao
Shannon Wiggins He tells amazing stories.
I gained a huge amount of respect for Stephen Colbert for this interview. He recognized the beautiful amazing and funny energy of Kevin Smith and just let him talk. I love that man
And now we take a moment to remember Ferguson. Really miss him.
i miss Craig. he was by far the best at getting his guests to open up and act like humans instead of advertising whatever project they were working on.
one of the most endearing and sincere and damn well was tearing up at the beginning he was so damn happy and gracious ass humans walking this earth man. bless you Mr. Smith.
Fantastic, two of my favorite men on the planet talking!
Only one of them was talking
And it was glorious
Only one of them were talking lol
I kept thinking that the whole interview was like Jay talking to Silent Bob
I love how he giggles like a little boy at all the cool stuff he loves. This man is an amazing human.
Kevin Smith is one of the most fun people to follow on Facebook, and he's so very genuine and raw. But most importantly, he's exactly the kind of father I want to aspire to be when I have a kid. He's such a dorky dad and is unapologetic about how much he loves and boasts his daughter.

No fatman on batman?
TESD
I hope they have a new talk salad episode soon after kevin is done doing press for yoga hosers
TESD has gotten pretty unbearable to listen to unfortunately.

Pusshole of the Week.
Kev is such an effortlessly funny and charismatic guy
Agreed 100% Kevin Smith is a Awesome Storyteller!
This is why we love Stephen. Even when he says nothing, he speaks volumes.
Wow, it's been a long time since I've smiled that hard. Dude definitely seemed a little nervous, and perhaps a little inexperienced, but the unrestrained enthusiasm he showed was incredibly refreshing.
No, he is experienced he is just very excitable... and he loves to talk, a lot. Ironic considering his own character in his films is basically a mute.
Let me rephrase what I said a little, I meant inexperienced with regard to other directors and actors. He even admitted that himself at the beginning of this interview.
Contagious happiness.
Best. Interview. Ever.
The contrast between this and Silent Bob is the largest contrast of anything ever.
I can see where Silent Bob comes from...
Also, if he takes off that jersey he can go totally anonymous.
that's actually a partial joke to jay and silent bob. In real life kevin smith talks like crazy, has thousands of stories while jason mewes (Jay) is actually very quiet IRL
Genius
He only started smoking pot recently though
hahahaha
Listening to Kevin Smith talk makes me happy.
Imagine this interview on Jimmy Fallon. He'd interrupt Kevin every 2 seconds and start talking about one of his own stories that no one cares about.
Oh forgot the phony laughter
precisely
I'm starting to think there are more comments about Jimmy Fallon on other late night videos than there are on his own.
That´s why Kevin Smith would never to to Jimmy Fallon´s "Show"
That´s right. He´s the most annoying late show host on air. Many people hate him. And they are right! Botox faced phony!
Ha-Ha, I'm from UK and I also watch this show during my breakfast, just after 9am :)
Me too :)
Egypt, same here.
***** What I really want on demand and full show is John Oliver, he is my favorite. Bill Mayer often funny and sharp.
You can only watch John Oliver on Sky Atlantic here in the UK unfortunately, so I use NowTV to keep up
***** Bill Maher is available on his UA-cam channel, full hour or so.
OMG! Single - greatest - "interview" - EVER!! I love Kevin Smith!
It's so endearing how he's been in the business sooo long yet he still has this childlike vulnerability when he met Stephen. He's really kept himself super humble and it's refreshing. It's so rare...

Not many talk show hosts I know of show restraint like here.
Stephen really earned his keep with this interview, didn't he? I mean, seriously. He spoke less than Eleven in Stranger Things.
Knowing when to talk and when not to is part of what makes a great host. And I think Stephen did great here.
he did perfectly. you don't want to interrupt your guest. Kevin was jammin man and Stephen ain't gonna cut the track when the magic is flowin like that. ya feel?
+TheNightShadow I have to agree with previous comments, knowing when not to speak and just letting the magic happen was the way to go, but seriously nice Stranger Things reference!

+John Klein a big plus one on the Craig Ferguson thing. I loved that show in the "old days." he was on the nerdist podcast and killed it a while back.
He's so busy fan-girling, he forgets to plug his own movie, and Stephen Colbert has to do it for him!
Kevin Smith is fanboying out!
And i'm loving every second of it.You can see he's genuine excited
He is one of the funniest story tellers ever. Good Job Stephen for letting the man do his thing.
MAJOR kudos to Colbert for just sitting back and letting Kevin Smith do his thing. That's a mark of a great host.
Kevin Smith should remain relevant forever. We need that dude. We need him.
I love the positivity and the way Colbert lets Smith run away without interruption.
Stephen is the guy who doesn't want to push to far and Kevin is the guy who grabs Stephen and says "fuck that, we are doing this!" And drags him along. It's fantastic
Mr Colbert is a great host. Smith is great guess they both need to have an hour talk show n discuss geek trivia. That would be a great show to see
Best interview I've seen in a while.
Colbert is like 'I'm just gonna drink my coffee and watch this go down ...' His reactions are what makes this video.
This is one of the best interviews Colbert's had on this show. Kevin Smith is a fucking hero.
While I'm not a fan of his films, Kevin Smith is still a very entertaining guy to listen to.
You need to be a certain type of person to like his movies lol (that's not meant to be an insult btw)
I saw that when he was in Edmonton. His story about breaking a toilet was absolutely hilarious.
Same here. Only thing I've ever really seen from him was The Flash episode he directed, and that was a great one. But from what I've heard his projects aren't fantastic. But fuck it, the guy is likable as shit and I want to meet him one day.

+Hovercraft recent projects aren't, but I'm a huge fan so I love it all even the schlock
If you haven't seen any of his stuff I'd highly recommend clerks
Good one on Colbert for letting Kevin do what he does best, talk.
Colbert clearly lost all control of the interview... and obviously loved every minute of it.
That. was. amazing.
2:19 is when Colbert realized that Kevin Smith basically interviewing himself was comic gold and let Smith take the wheel. Only a talented guy like Colbert would have that confidence in his guest. Mad respect.
That was awesome. When was the last time Stephen Colbert laughed that much at a guest?
Well you can see how real he is about beeing a fan of Stephen Colbert, he looks so happy it made me happy too. hahaha
Fuck me, Kevin Smith's geniality is contagious.
man I could listen to him talk all day, he is hilarious.
I fucking love Kevin Smith! met him this past May and he's fucking awesome! he's so genuine and smart and kind and funny! I love him and not many people can say they had Kevin Smith give them a ten minute speech about following your dreams but I'm one of the lucky few
Only ten minutes?! He must've been really exhausted
+cohletrain lol the venue told him he had to get offstage because he was already 2 hours over the time he was supposed to stop
Lady Nova
t...th...those monsters!
Kevin Smith is the best person to interview all the way!
No Jorts? Come on Kev. Rock them Jorts.
he lost a lot of weight, doesn't need the ankle length jorts anymore really he could just wear regular jorts
OH MY GOD I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE HE'S WEARING ACTUAL PANTS I'M NOT SURE I'VE EVER SEEN HIM WITH REGULAR PANTS ON
He's 46yo now! The man has graduated to big boy pants, son!
Jorts are the worst idea since Greedo shooting first.
The Reactions Stephen Has Are The Best And He Let Kevin Go On and On Before He Finally Gets To Talk 2:45 LOL!
The really funny part is Colbert can be very manic and overtalky sometimes himself, but here he just played it super cool and gave in to the Smith monologue. Probably the safest bet ultimately.
Jesus Kevin.... Age.... Just age a little. Its like Silent Bob has never had a stressful day in his life.
Hmmm... "wake and bake"? ... maybe???
It's that weed, man.
I can't tell if this is a compliment or an insult lol
fat don't crack!
that happens when you look like youre 40 at 24.
This is the best interview on any talk show, including Conan, that I've seen in a long time. Kevin Smith needs to come back on seriously
Kevin Smith Does Not Need Any Interviewer LOL! Still The Best and Funniest Interview Yet!
Best interview ever! I love Kevin Smith and Stephen Colbert. Stephen Colbert didn't have to do any work.
One reason I love this Interview is, because Smith expresses, with his words and with his actions, and reactions, his love for Stephen, something I really want to do as well, so watching this I kinda like letting my inner Fangirl out, and just hugging him... twice ;)
Kevin Smith is a Very Funny Guy I Have Respect For Him Even Though He's a NJ Devils Fan LOL!
For some reason, watching people exchange Shakesperean-esque lines warms my heart.
I expected this to be quite entertaining. It exceeded my expectations. Colbert's reactions were gold.
This is my favorite thing I've seen all week. It just makes me happy
If this doesn't trend, it deserves to.
I knew this would trend.
damn bro.. you replied to your own comment..
It's so adorable how nervouse Kevin is because he idolizes Stephen Colbert. And the most amazing part is that Colbert is so nice to him and it just gives me all the feels 😄😄
Even on the the late show he can't shut the fuck up!!😂😂😂that said I love both these men! Excellent segment!!
I've Heard That Kevin Smith's Podcast Things are So Cool!
I had no idea Kevin Smith and I had the same morning habits! I also wake and bake with Stephen!! Harder during this strike...
SO GOOD! Best interview ever
Awesome interview! Love these guys.
Thank you Kevin Smith for always making me laugh
This guy Kevin Smith is great , love him ..never have seen him be for , boy am I out of the loop . Great energy !
What an adorable man.
I lost it at the "wand chases the wizard" part.
You can't help but laugh. Thanks for appearing, sober or not.
I love Kevin Smith and Colbert... Great video!!!
Fallon could never.
This was such a wonderful interview. I love Kevin.
Wow the legend is true, kevin literally doesn't stop talking 😂
Loved Kevin, Loved Stephen's reactions, especially to the "Dumbledick" story.
I love this so much... Kevin is the same guy no matter where he is.
I like that Kevin is a big Colbert fan. I have watched Colbert religiously since he started the Report.
I love Kevin smith and I love Stephen Colbert. This is hilarious!!!
Love that KS is a fan for real
I love Kevin Smith!
This ended up being exactly what I thought it would be...and it's fantastic. Could listen to (and do on his podcasts) Kevin ramble on all day.
These two are such pinnacles of hero-worship for me. Both are absolute titans of humor, wit, love, and humanity.
Same. I love both of these guys.
pure epic gold°! thank you for inviting Kevin Smith to your show stephen
Love how Steven embraces nerd culture on his show. We need him on Critical Role
I was actually at his Atlanta show and he told us this exchange between him and his kid. It was funny then and funny now. Kevin Smith is awesome!
This is why Kevin doesn't do talk shows. No one let's him just go like that.
Stephen Colbert and Kevin Smith, two of my heroes together. Today is a good day. ^_^
Kevin Smith is a ray of sunshine
Just had to have surgery over at the VA hospital, can't sleep (pain).
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! Totally took my mind off of it, great job guys.
-UnbrokenVet
Have Kevin and Steven make a geek podcast just so they can Nerd out about stuff and even talk about thier families I'd watch it
Kevin Smith is the best guest Stephen has ever had. I come back to this interview occasionally for the laughs
This is like having a normal fan on the show
I could listen to Kevin Smith tell anecdotal stories all day. Great interview.
oh god that was hilarious
and Stephen's reactions just had me in stitches
Same Thing I Love When He Stars Drinking While Kevin Telling Stories LOL!
Favorite interview by far!!
Those eyes . . . is he sure he didn't light up before coming out?
Oh, he totally did. He's always stoned.
Kevin Smith openly admits that he's pretty much stoned 24/7 these days. I'd be shocked if he's not high in this interview.
Great father and a Great host, 10outta10!!
Kevin Smith is so adorable.
