Gotta kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight. If I had to listen to only one artist for the rest of my life I'd take this guy. Amazing poet and musician!
@@dippin1523:I first listened to -- and fell in love with -- Bruce's music decades back; right when this first came out I Was Hooked. Haven't heard this in years! Plus, yes, IT IS one of the All Time greatest lines in the history of music. Mr. Cockburn CONSCIOUSLY turned down greater popularity to speak his mind.
One of the great things about BC is that there is that separation between what he’s doing on the guitar and what he’s singing. His records adapted to cultural change in the 80s especially.
And he indeed sees it before remarking. So many bands write songs from headlines. Not Bruce. He goes to the scene puts feet in the ground and listens to the locals. His vinyl albums used to be marked where and when they were recorded. From East Germany, Poland, Mozambique, the Caribbean, Nicaragua, Iraq, etc and told the story all through the album leaving the last song with hope and joy. No matter how depressing or distressing the social situation was the last song on the album always held out hope. Love that idea.
This song still makes me cry...invincible youth...holding hands with your best friend staring down the naysayers...feeling like you can go all night with them by your side...
I adore this man....his belief in God is just another miracle for the musical joy he has provided for us all. If God had an acoustic guitar ON EARTH he would call himself BRUCE COCKBURN. Thanks for making me float back to my campsites ..year after year.
I left Canada in 1993 because this job in Europe was so good. Two years became four and, eventually 30....and this song reminds me so much about the time 30 years ago. Almost 70 but I must come back, just to listen to the music of this sort.
I have revisited this song throughout the years ever since it first hit the airwaves in Toronto. Every time, every blessed time, my eyes tear up. And now it's 2021. If nothing else this song is even more relevant and timely now than it was back in the eighties.
This tune is pure gold. Been searching for it for probably ten years. Thanks, Don. You're a top notch human being, and a couple notches above that as a songwriter.
Such a talented singer/songwriter and guitar player! I remember hearing some of his songs in the 80's on radio and always thought they were good but now that I'm in my 50's I appreciate him a lot more now!
I first heard this song many years ago, and inquired about it at a local record store. I ordered the CD, and enjoyed it, but wasn't old enough to truly appreciate what I was listening to. Fast forward to the end of 2022 and the beginning of a new year, and what has changed for the alternative community? Anything positive AND lasting since he wrote this song? Look at how ignorance and intolerance has infiltrated and corrupted who we are as a society. This song has as much meaning today as it did so many years ago. Listen to the lyrics, REALLY listen to the lyrics and stand up for the right of people to love who they want to and not be afraid. He wrote this for a reason.
still has a good voice. you know a true singer when they can sing good live, unlike many others that made millions but could not sing without a ton of electronics manipulating there voice
Just heard the '84 version on Spotify for the first time today and I couldn't help but play this track over and over. This acoustic version is beyond amazing. Thank you for your gift of music, Mr. Cockburn ☺
Even without the melody, this is fine poetry. Some of the best lines in music. I remember years ago when I first met my now wife who at that time only spoke Spanish. I would often translate songs for her that we both enjoyed and this one brought tears to my eyes as I explained the beauty of the poetry. We often still listen to this song and to the Bare Naked Ladies cover which is also incredible.
I had the honor of meeting and getting his autograph in 1994 in Toronto,Pearson international airport ..Nicest gentlest person I've had the pleasure of meeting.. Stopped and spoke with me asking where I was from and seemed very interested in my travels.. Still have his autograph (on my check book, the only paper item I had :)
I was alarmed by BC back in the 80's and fell for his poetic sounds that sang to my concern for a world of wonder. I hark back to the days of bliss when I held his soulful sounds dear. Still wonderful to reminisce of times past, with hope for renewal. I have said this elsewhere but it ring s true to all of BC's work. Saw him at UCSD back in mid 80's for the 1st time.
This song (and performance) is monumental...I don't know much of his other works, but the Stealing Fire album (that this tune is on) is one of my all time favorites, just put the album on and play, every song is perfect...
Awesome rhythm.. great song and great vocals... it's the first time my ears have heard this guys amazing talent and I'm gonna be back for a whole lot more. Best to you Bruce. 🎸😊
+John Metcalf been a really big fan of BC talent since the early eighties, Saw him in a solo show 15 years ago.. would really enjoy seeing him in a full band to get the pure sound as in his great great recording
I saw Bruce do this last Thursday. Just him, no band or other bull shit to get in his way. Superb! He's an underrated master at what he does. But then again Bruce is over most peoples head.
He's one of the greatest Canadian Folk/Indie Rock artists of ALL time. Definitely one of my faves. His whole album "Humans" (1980) is just a masterpiece.
gives the BEST performance - priceless, memorable, loving, funny, truth teller extraordinaire (xoxoxoxox) - the sing-alongs are especially awesome. hands down favorite, gem of a human being.
listened to stealing fire after i found it in a bargain bin at my local record store. one of my favorite albums. when my studio teacher told me he worked with Bruce as a recording engineer, I was so surprised!
Saw Bruce a few years live play this at a concert of his. Awesome performance.
"These fragile bodies of touch and taste/This vibrant skin, this hair like lace...."
What an exceptional song writer is Bruce Cockburn.
Pure poetry! :)
Bro he didn't write this song, barenaked ladies did
Finish the verse
One of my favorite verses ever
@@bowengoertzen1854are you serious? He wrote this song in the 80’s.
@@bowengoertzen1854 WRONG...Mr Know It All.

best line in all music

Absolutely agree!! Bruce is my #1!
Even bono stole those lyrics
Me2. Not even a close second in sight.
I'm proud he is Canadian.
Canada's Mark KNopfler!!!
I recently discovered him and I have to say Rush, Neil Young, Till Tuesday, and him are some of my favs from the great north
My family reigned from Canada and merged south to New York.
Very under appreciated Canadian talent. Need to tell more of my american friends about Bruce.
polytelismedia ....do it
polytelismedia don't have to tell Jimmy Buffett
Or Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Barenaked Ladies, The Grateful Dead, Leo Sayer, Chet Atkins, etc...
Barenaked Ladies are Canadian to begin with.
It's always been that way too. Everybody that has an ability to hear, let them hear that they might see.
Bruce Cockburn has always been an inspiring poet for me. And his guitar is the other poet.
One of the great things about BC is that there is that separation between what he’s doing on the guitar and what he’s singing. His records adapted to cultural change in the 80s especially.
Sweet😅
Back 2025...This song has drum, bass and rhythm all in one package.
If ever there was a lyric to describe working midnights for 13 years it's
" Ya gotta kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight "
☮❤🇺🇸🇨🇦
Brilliant, thanks. This was the first thing that popped into my mind: "There is a crack, a crack in everything
, that's how the light gets in".
Been there,done that..over 13 yrs.!!
We are so overdue for a new wave of serious singer songwriters. Come on people. Get your music out there!
It's out there; you have to search for it. Broadcast no longer serves it.
Great song especially Bruce singing it ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
This song works more today than when it was coined. Love it Bruce!
The combination of the religious and sexual imagery is just compelling. And he's a master craftsman of the guitar. A Canadian gem.
I always loved the Barenaked Ladies version because I heard that growing up then searched this, blew my mind. both are amazing
I agree the BNL version is also good but the song belongs to this man. He’s the musical poet genius who wrote it and first sang it.
He’s amazing
Appreciate both versions for sure..
@@bikerhighmiler8998 Love the harmonies of Steve and Ed in the BNL version.
My 5 and 6 year old sons know every word by heart to this song!!! So happy my kids ars growing up listening to and loving real music❤❤❤❤
Totally 💗 i grew up to his music and saw him live twice
If I was a musician this is what I would aspire to: one instrument, one microphone and one voice.
THIS MAN DOES NOT PULL ANY PUNCHES,,,TELLS IT AS HE SEE IT,,,,GREAT ARTIST,,,

J'ai découvert Bruce en 1972 au Canada. ..je ne l'ai jamais oublié. ..quel bonheur de le retrouver. .merci Internet!!!!!
Just about a perfect performance -- the song is even more vulnerable and heartbreaking this way.
This might be my fav of the recordings of Bruce singing it
A Canadian Icon!!!! This took me back to growing up in the 80's in Ontario!!!
Me too man.
Every single couplet in this song is a couplet of such depth and quality that most poets would be thrilled to have but one of them in a poem...
love this guy !
still makes me cry.
A Very talented but unfortunately underrated artist
This song still makes me cry...invincible youth...holding hands with your best friend staring down the naysayers...feeling like you can go all night with them by your side...
Well said, cheers
Never thought of it that way. Thx for the image.
I adore this man....his belief in God is just another miracle for the musical joy he has provided for us all. If God had an acoustic guitar ON EARTH he would call himself BRUCE COCKBURN. Thanks for making me float back to my campsites ..year after year.

I just can't decide whether he's a better guitar player or songwriter! Amazing!
Saw him in Edgartown MA at the Old Whaling Church in 1996. One of the best, no, the best small venue show I’ve ever seen. Incredible honest talent!
Fuck. Bruce has never sounded better. Incredible performance.
I remain in awe of Bruce Cockburn...
Marvelous!
Thanks for your honest and sincere love towards my work,we have you to be most thankful for . 💓
Still kicking after all these years. Peace Bruce.
another example of the great talent found in The Ottawa Valley
If Bruce had spent all his time in Hollywood he'd be much more famous, but no, he's the real deal
Ottawa Valley boy done good. A Canadian treasure.
Such a great song and suitable for the era we find ourselves in for sure.
I have revisited this song throughout the years ever since it first hit the airwaves in Toronto. Every time, every blessed time, my eyes tear up. And now it's 2021. If nothing else this song is even more relevant and timely now than it was back in the eighties.
I didn’t want this to end. But when it did, I just started it again.
Grew up on this and loved it ❤

He makes it look so easy. Love this man.
David Binks most masters of their craft do.
Such an amazing song! I'll be sharing this with as many people from my generation as possible to keep this amazing music going
I love his guitar playing here. It's so simple but still expressive.
he makes it look simple, but playing "bass" with your thumb and the melody with your fingers at the same time is quite a feat
@@jriles70bones I don't doubt it. I've been trying to learn it myself for a while, it's killing my fingers!
