I first heard this song when I was a kid, eating at the mission with my homeless mom.
My goal as a child when I was grown was to live inside. I've accomplished my goal. This song has always given me hope.
Good for you.
Thanks for your honest and sincere love towards my work,we have you to be most thankful for . 💓🙏🙏
This comment made me stop and think what that must have been like.....good for you and bless you're heart
@@jamesc4812 blessings and thanks for helping me through living in my storage locker and Michigan's urban forest, 2018
you lie
I know one thing. A Bruce Cockburn song will be played at my funeral service. This one is my favorite at the moment. Greetings from Germany to all Bruce Cockburn fans.
I am of the age that have such thoughts now as well. Pacing the Cage is a current favorite along with this song. I was in Kinderschool in K town in the early 60's. I got in trouble for throwing away a bite of banana! The post war Germany was not wasteful of anything it seemed. My descends are German all frugal and hard working. I am now the same way!
Hallo. For me, it would prolly be a Mark Heard tune..
What a beautiful gift this song was. Remember listening to it when it first came out. I was 15 and homeless and had just gotten a job washing dishes in a restaurant. It played a lot in that kitchen that summer and it always made me feel good. About 7 years later, I was flying to Germany to begin a co-op job for an engineering firm. This song was on the plane's playlist, and I remember listening to it over and over while thinking back about all that I'd been through to get to where I was now.
Thank you so much for your support and love
Don't know if you really are Bruce Cockburn - but either way, that was a real nice response! I'm honored.
@@attsealevel mark how long have you been my fan
Back in the day, an old boyfriend introduce this song to me. Everyonce in a while I think about him and this song instantly comes to mind. Rest in peace, Jay.
My ex introduced me to this song when we were together. Sometimes when I listen to this song I think of her. It's weird how the human mind works hey?
Amazing I had a old girlfriend contact me from Italy after 10 years and she said thanks for our time together. Right before that for some reason I was thinking about Camilla. Time and love do funny things to the mind and heart.
🙏🏻
I'm 13 and me and my dad would listen to this song when we would go camping and he passed away recently and this song reminded me of him
I’m so sorry for the loss of your Dad. My good wishes to you.
A man with chronic depression, a man who has it because he sees the world as it is, spends a beautiful morning standing outside of himself and the sublime takes over. Those glimpses of the sublime keep him going
Beautiful and well said
I turn this song on and I'm instantly happy.
A true artist. I’ve been living with chronic sadness and bouts of depression and this song is always so uplifting to me.
I can relate Terra. I tell myself it may be dark now but the sun always rises. Peace.
You’re not alone.
Sadness as part of our being
I’ve been crying pretty much all day today it felt good
Hang in there! I'm about to be evicted. God bless you!
Yo! I hope you are doing better. You have so much to offer to the rest of the world
Oh, my God, Bruce, don't you EVER die! You made me cry. I taped this for my son when I was going through a divorce a zillion years ago and labeled "happy songs" along with Harry Nilsson's "moonbeam Song." I love your song so much, I STILL listen to it.
This is one of the best songs ever written. It is as good as anything ever written by John and Paul, Elton and Bernie, on and on.
It must be wonderful to know that something you created has touched so many people.
Thank you, sir.
Very well put my friend. He's definitely a Canadian treasure, just like Neil Young, etc. etc. etc, eh? 😆
Its a shame he's a one hit wonder, he's charming
Absolutely💕 #1 on my top ten playlist at 58 & counting. Big Love to you Bruce 💞 👏
This has always BEEN A FAVORITE OF MINE Iheard it recently and it caused it to resurface in my head.THIS SONG IS ADDICTIVE WITH IT'S BEAT, BRUCE! I keep playing it OVER AND OVER
THE GUITAR WORK IS JUST STELLAR
@@laurahall5218 Oh I can think of a few more. You know, if I had a rocket launcher some sonofabitch would pay.
I remember seeing Bruce years ago when he was on tour in the States. We in the audience were also singing his songs with him. He’s a Canadian treasure.
How in the hell can anyone give this a thumbs down? Seriously? Great voice, great lyrics, great guitar. 1 person with talent. No hordes of dancers and blinding lasers. Seek help.
AT THE CROCODIL FARM.
Welcome to the internet. Where the trolls seek out whom they may devour...
My bride had the title of this song engraved on my wedding ring , lyrics so meaning fil to me. Thank you Bruce
It's 1 day after Hurricane Sandy in Brooklyn. After falling asleep to the sound of galeforce winds whipping through the panes in my windows....I woke up to silence, un-pinned the sheets from my windows, and saw - a bit of sun already. I was okay, my block was okay (one of the ones that DIDN'T get flooded), I still had power and most of my friends are all okay. I immediately thought of this song - "Sun's up, uh-huh, looks okay, the world survives into another day...." Thank you.
Over my life I have had Bruce’s songs come and go thru my life. Always liked how they sounded and very catchy but never really listened to the words. I was young and stupid. Now that I’m older I listen to the words and realize how amazing he is. A national treasure for Canada
NO, a true treasure for THE WHOLE WORLD!!
(But yes, THANK YOU a million times over for giving him to us, Canada! :) )
A Canadian icon, one of the finest musicians of our times and a most incredible musical poet. God bless Bruce Cockburn.
Canadian Kevin Bacon 😅?
I was just a kid. I was at Ontario Place when I saw Bruce and I will never forget it. everytime I hear this song it takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. Thanks for the music.
At the old Ontario Place Forum? Wonderful venue, I miss it dearly.
I've seen Bruce in about 4 different States in the last 20+ years. I'd follow him to the moon if I could afford it. He's a brilliant musician and a lovely, lovely soul
I'm guessing you're a lovely soul too.
kathy brody cool
I feel so lucky. He is my uncle (his second wife is my aunt by blood) and I see them 2 times a year. He actually taught me how to play the guitar :P
I have heard the acoustics are horrible up there.
My cousin in New Zealand shared this with me saying "This song is good medicine".
So great how the crowd is singing along with Bruce. :)
Andre Kirchhoff I know It was my favorite part especially when he didn't have his band with him
I grew up on Bruce Cocburn. I saw him live in the late 60's in a Montreal coffee shop way before he was known. He was the greatest influence on my subsequent musical career as a singer-songwriter. I learned how to write meaningful lyrics and how to pick a guitar from. That video brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it.
Absolutely the most rounded musician I have ever heard/seen. Bruce Cockburn is a poet in a musicians body. His fingerwork is superhuman. Thank God for him.
i had this song on a mix tape in the late 1990s a boy i was in love with gave to me. haven't heard it in about 26 years. brings me to another time. better times. i'm 47 now.
Bruce graced the birth of our first born son with this song in Dallas, Texas of June 4th, 1980. I had quit my job, traveled to BGSU to enroll in a special ed. masters program and find a house for our budding family. Poor as we were, I taught a couple years and God led us to the Central Pacific to pursue teaching positions at a boarding school earning $385 a month with our baby girl born just before we left for Kiribati. What a wild journey! Fearless to no end, my wife and I, with God's hand upon our shoulder in faith and prayer, pursued an extravagant dream that has yielded a harvest of good works and fulfillment. "Wondering where the lions are?" That's just your godless self telling you that you need to work at it using your own power and playing it safe. Don't do it! Live extravagantly using God's power in faith and holding him responsible for the fulfillment for which he created you to become and be. That's "some kind of ecstasy" when you trust in His power to guide and lead you. My advise, move over and give God a chance in faith & prayer..."I'm thinking about eternity" and you'll wonder where the lions are even through the failures that we all need to fearlessly over come through faith & trust in His spirit, not yours. --KG
This song just made my day a little better.
When my soul is need of solace I turn to Bruce to sooth the raging and help me to cease pacing the cage. Someday all this really isn't going to mean a damn thing, I'll just be more star dust like all those who have gone before; better lighten up and enjoy@
steven hewitt ya you right
you are beautiful Steven
Peace brother
Me Too,,, such great Canadian classic artist.. singing right along now.. his music especially liracs realx me.
@T. Logan Russell Anybody else see the connection between Bruce Cockburn and Joni Mitchell?
This song along with the Freddy Jones band's song In a daydream truly lift my sometimes sagging spirit. Strive on
Haven't heard this in years. It just popped into my head this morning. So awesome to find this clip.
Bruce Cockburn may be the greatest song writer and folk performer in modern history.😎👍
I agree. Best lyrist and his troubadour skills put him in the top 100 of all time.
I could never mistake this voice...gets better with age.
Yes, and it reminds me of Warren Zevon's.
I was just thinking the same. His voice actually sounds better to me than it did 30 odd years ago.
A brilliant singer, poet masterful guitar player...Thank you Canada for the gift of Bruce Cockburn...
Lookin forward to seeing/hearing again this Feb 2018 in Santa Cruz....We need his insight now more than ever.
Absolutely agree...he's fantastic...
On behalf of Canada..."cool"
My daughter has pancreatic cancer. This song connected her and I, thank you Bruce.
Sending love❤
If I could give this a million thumbs up I would.
Maybe if we keep clicking your thumb, we'll get to a million (that is, thouse of us who agree with you).
funny... the African village doesn't seem to miss it.
"Freighters on the nod on the surface of the bay, One of these days we're going to sail away" That line has always sounded like the perfect melding of rhythms - it always makes my heart stop.
This song touched me as a child as well.....thanks Bruce.
On this day in 1980 {March 16th} "Wondering Where the Lions Are" by Bruce Cockburn entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #85; eleven weeks later on June 1st, 1980 it peaked at #21 {for 2 weeks} and spent 17 weeks on the Top 100...
He had one other Top 100 record, ""If I Had a Rocket Launcher", it peaked at #88 in 1994...
Between 1971 and 1997 in his native Canada he had twenty-one records the RPM Pop Singles chart, his biggest hit was "If a Tree Falls", it peaked at #8 in 1989...
Mr. Cockburn will celebrate his 70th* birthday in two months on May 27th, 2015...
* I hope he handles it better than me, I turned 70 this past January 15th...
+sauquoit13456 the song actually entered Billboard March 22, 1980
It was Eric Clapton speaking on Prince, actually.
How could 17 people NOT like this?! I saw him in London about 20 years ago and he's brilliant as ever.
Those 17 people struggle with tone-deafness and mental illness. Not their fault...
Mein geliebter Bruce,
auch Deine Lieder lassen mir meine Freiheit!
Mein lieber Bruce,
Dein künstlerischer Beitrag zu unserer Bewegung war immer herausragend!
Danke dafür!
This came out in 79, I love his emphasis on soldiers marching with shiny helmets where their brains should be. Still looking out for the lions but time and experience has a way of removing the fear. Thanks Bruce.
Should be part of basic training for all warriors.
Him and Lawrence Gowan are the two most underrated Canadian musicians of all time.
another fantastic Canadian artist...
Nice looking guitar. .. The sound is beautiful too. Thanks Bruce for 40 years of music. I first heard you when I was a DJ at Radio station. I remember 8t was the Stealing Fire album. Songs like, " Maybe the Poet," "Mary's Kitchen," "Sarah Gold," "If I had a "Rocket Launxher," Lover's in a dangerous rime." You're one of the greats.
Cockburn , poet , musician and absolute genius. What a show at Massey in Toronto. A Canadian Icon and National treasure. 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Everyone should know this. Got tons of radio play in chicago.
Man this came up on auto play. I can tell he is a genuine, awesome person. Would love to see him live someday!!
@@HAL9OOOOOO haha i just sang that to the melody!
brilliance beyond definition ... so many decades, so many songs, so many causes, so many evils confronted ... Thankyou Bruce, do not ever stop !!!
goodonya batman
gotta love those back ground singers.. How cool was that.. wondering where the lions are,,,, wondering where the lions are... great tune
This is such a great song... and I love this fun, audience-involving version.

Just love this guy!
Thanks for your honest and sincere love towards my work,we have you to be most thankful for . 💓🙏🙏
Add many hundreds, maybe thousands of times he's played this song...
When the crowd sings their part, he can't help but smile that smile
You have to be kidding me buddy! I remember this song tangentially from way back but the more I hear it the more I like!! Pure genius. Take it from a music lover and amateur songwriter. This is pure gold!🙏
You are one of Gods beautiful creations thank you for sharing!
I woke up this morning with this in my head
I'm also wondering where the lions are. Not fearing them of course and perhaps I'm one of them. Following the Lion of Judah. So some kinda ecstasy got hold of me too.
Great song I haven't heard in a very long time. Glad I revisited this tonight.
Rolland
Heard this in an airport last week. It hooked me, like it had years ago. Thanks, Bruce.
I'll tell him that he will be very happy
Love you, Buddy! Just got a brain tumor cut out and listening to this on the dawning of day 2.xo

Saw BC in the early '80s in Wellington, NZ. Fortunate enough to chat to him after the show....just a great evening with great music. A concert I will never forget.
cockburn is a genius
sometimes
brilliant man. brilliant tune.
just saw his fabulous concert in Edmonton tonight! Wow! What an entertainer ........ Thank you, Bruce...
Never get tired of hearing this joyful song,
Love the song and the guitar
I kept hearing this song when my daughter died. A few days after her death I found this song on a 45 in a resale shop!
amazing
Thanks for your honest and sincere love towards my work,we have you to be most thankful for . 💓🙏
This man is just a fantastic musician....
I was just listening to an early song of Bruce's,The Blues Got the World By the Balls.Probably more true today than when he wrote it.This one, though,is the perfect antidote to that. He's just a treasure.
genial, je vous avais vu dans un bar a Quebec en 75 , j avais adoré ....... très beau cadeau merci merci ....
i bought 'Dancing in the Dragons Jaws' when i was about 16 years old - having a terrible time with loneliness and bullying at school. A school acquaintance worked in a record shop and out of the blue - he said you've gotta buy this album. I had no idea at that time the whole album was steeped in spirit and grace and wonder. I stuck the LP cover on my bedroom door and it kept the dragons at bay.....It is the most beautiful music i have ever heard and i still own the CD.
This song has such a beautiful flow to it. Certainly one of his better songs he doesn't fail. The guitar work is so tasteful and the voice still sounds good after all these years. He's a true artist!!
So adore this song. I keep coming back♥️♥️
Mein geliebter Bruce, herzlich willkommen bei uns!
An Adventure. Thanks Man. I bought your book along with a Jimmy Croce when I was young.
I practiced till my fingers bleed. Because I love it.
Lonely ness is a state of mind. Hyphen be damned.
Like what Alice Cooper said.....lonely but never alone.
All the Diamonds
A wonderful rediscovery of a fine artist. I have not listened to Bruce in many years and he can still bring it.
One of the best songs ever.
Brings a tear to my eye, How good is that!!! And how bad is the music of today? Totally heartless and soulless. I am so glad I am of the generation that knows of this music and the kind of long lasting pleasure it brings. God bless artists like Bruce, we know where the gold standard is.
This is just so joyfully honest.
Yes indeed, I never. wondered where the lions where, till I heard this song then thought if I lived in Kenya for someplace in Africa when I awoke in the morning in some Hut I'd be wondering where the lions were for sure. Thanks for sharing

Good ole Bruce ,one of our Canadian gems .That dude is so intelligent I was tongue tied when I met him ,afraid to attempt to discuss politics or current affairs of any kind .
So amazing that his voice still sounds like he did in 1979! Live this song!!!
One of my favorite songwriters and performers.
Thanks for your honest and sincere love towards my work,we have you to be most thankful for . 🙏
1:40 I wonder if he means a particular River that has since dried up. ❔
It has been decades since I have heard thins. There is something in my eye.
This guy is a good soul.
Someone once asked Stevie Ray Vaughan what it was like to be the best guitarist in the World. He replied "Go ask Bruce Cockburn!"
It was Eric Clapton
Loren Victor I've heard this story many, many times, but with different names in each space.
That's cool. I heard Stevie play once (with Albert Collins) but this impresses me; basically he was saying that Bruce MIGHT be an even better guitarist than himself, but then that Bruce would probably say there was someone better than HIMself. I don't think Cockburn would say Clapton.
This is funny, I've heard a few names now related to this comment. The main one that I heard was actually when Eddie Van Halen was asked....not sure who it was now, but the bottom line is that Bruce holds an unbelievable amount of respect from some of the greatest musicians
@@BillBurnette No! It was Hendrix who named Phil Keagey! :-)
Great singer songwriter, fantastic guitarist. This is a classic and so well deserved.
Up among the firs where it smells so sweet
Or down in the valley where the river used to be
I got my mind on eternity
Some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me
Wonderful song Bruce. Well done. Beautiful.
This reminds me of seeing Bruce live in a venue in Mannheim, Germany a few years ago. Just the man and his guitar. Wonderful.

This made me cry for some reason
I remember the first time I heard this. WKIR in Jackson, TN was playing it in 1979. There was a storm coming in, so we could hear the distant station (100 miles) in western Kentucky. Hauling hay with my buddies, thinking about where we were gonna spend all that money...
Damn.
Thanks for posting!
Awesome performance, love how he engages the crowd!
I'm still in love with this guy. I made a recording a zillion years ago, of happy music for my son and now, when he's 36, with his first baby, my first grandbaby, I'm going to make another happy music CD/Download/whatever for her with this song on it. Only done by Bruce, of course.
Great song
Saw him at Woody Point festival this past August 2015...man he still has the chops..
great show.
Lovely
