Man muss sich vorstellen: Holland qualifizierte sich damals nicht für die WM 1986 in Mexiko! Kaum vorstellbar, mit diesem (mit Stars gespickten) Team, die dann zwei Jahre später in Deutschland Europameister wurden!

Germany didn't even look that bad. At the WC in '86 they looked like such an old and slow team that would just depend on set pieces. But this game had a lot of pace.

As a Dutchman, I think the enmity from the Dutch team towards the German team is mostly a thing of the past now. We're still more motivated to see our team snatch a win against Germany than against (almost) any other country, but that's just for the sake of the classic rivalry, no particular feelings of unfriendliness being involved anymore, I think.

We only missed it by a hair. Belgium knocked us out of the qualifiers. No surprise because Belgium had a really good team that almost went to the finals. Holland was still developing. 1988 would be our year.

Briegel, never did. In the 80s some players were famous for not wearing shin guards - Lerby, Gordillo, Sturrock, it was obvious because they rolled socks down. But many others did not wear pads, but had their socks up, so it wasn't that obvious
