we did not destroy his confidence we gave him his confidence if the player wasn't there, he would have never captured that ralts or made it to the pokemon league
+Josh Thomas they get the pokemon and tell. them to use their attacks and then they made names for all of the attacks but they didn't get em all that's y there are new moves getting discovered each gen
I remember playing emerald. after wally found his ralts I spent a total of 6 hours in the same patch of grass, trying to find my own ralts. this is why I love the new mechanics in oras
I highly doubt that Ralts was the first Pokemon you encountered in the grass while playing Emerald... If you mean the Pokemon you first encountered on Route 102 then its the same for me.
Chloe The Geek You can only find Ralts on Route 102 in RSE. You have to pass through routes 101 and 103 before you can get to Route 102. I don't doubt that you found it early but you probably ran into a few Zigzagoon, Wurmple, and/or Poochyena on the routes before 102...
In my opinion, Wally is 1 of the best rivals in the franchise. Even though he always loses to you, the player, his progress from when he started in Petalburg is truly honourable. This is a kid that not only had a sickness but also very low-self esteem and to see him defy that and progress the way he did really was inspirational. In anything, Wally reminds me of myself, I have low self-esteem and I suffer from a couple of disabilities but I'm not the type to let those pin me down and conquer me. Wally, you may be shy and lack confidence but you'll always be 1 of the best rivals.
Protomario when you beat Wally in front of the gym the uncle does mention that he is sick fill the question I'm having right now is what kind of sickness does Wally have I would say cancer but there's no evidence to support that
I understand this, but it's the same thing as I am saying with the whole shy shoe horning, you can't just shoe horn a sickness in and say, AH Magic, this trainer is sick thats why! It's like, ehh? Wut? What is he sick with, why, and if he is sick how can he walk around even? Seriously, lung disease, cancer, this shit will kill you, so how? HOOOOWWWW? Hence why I am not giving the game a free pass.
this how I feel about Hau in Sun and Moon. he's always so cheery and jolly even when he loses and loses and loses to you. I feel like hes holding in those feelings lol
Proto I'm going to honest here and give my observation I had watching this video: Something tells me you don't like Wally very much as a character. As for the theory itself: It is very good and very sound. Depressing as all hell but quite good and logical.
ProtoMario I can understand that and respect that Proto. However I for found him adorable and kinda relatable, cause I was similiar. I became competive cause I had a friend curbstomp me to often in Middle School. So bias in my part. :D
ProtoMario Good point it is well noted. In fact Ash's raining all over the place sounds good ONLY if you're Serena. :p (I couldn't resist the pun sorry)
ProtoMario It's stated that the wind doesn't blow that way and if the NPC on the route between Mauville and Verdanturf is to be believed, the air quality is actually very good.
Crystalite Playz I am talking about the rivals. I love gen 5, but it makes me feel like the villian in BW, but B2W2 kinda helps by seeing how Cheren, Bianca and N grow.
OBJECTION! at the end of the Delta episode wally's father mentions that wally has gotten healthier ever since he became a trainer. he says he want's to beat you one day. you aren't destroying his confidence you are giving him a goal to work towards and he came close to his goal and he knew he could do better. if that's not confidence then i don't know what is. THEORY DEBUNKED!
im going to say it all the times i can, we should have had a fight with wally before victory road, something to show "he is working on it". i swear to god the first time i finished up PK Ruby and he apeared at the end of victory road, i onestly didnt remember who he was. He needed more screen time, one more battle. i would have liked to have a battle with him where he has a couple of weak pokemon like a skitty or a magnemite, and his raltz already fully evolved, something to show he is slowly becoming a rival, not a 0 to 100 turn around
me too, when i first battled him i actually didn't attack him and just keept using howl and waited for him to defeat me,but i had a dark type and ralts is a psychic type so yeah
Wally's dialogue in the Japanese version and the fact that he has a Gallade with perfect IV's with that rematch, and ditching two of his team members from before (such as Altaria) suggest he's been doing a lot of egg farming for perfect stats. What does THAT say about him? (I didn't know about this till I read it on TV tropes. It is suggested he threw away all his scruples and went the way of the StopHavingFunGuys.)
Great theory Proto! I liked the way you summed it all together with the pieces of evidence that you had, keep it up! Also, If I may ask, have anybody bought shirts of the Raikou I made? :)
ProtoMario Ahh that's not cool, maybe it's unclear what the money will be used for? I remember that you said that you would not take the money yourself (tho that would be a lot better, we could help supporting you) so maybe making the message a bit clearer? I don't know
kingofblox gaming/ minecraft, pokemon, and more! I liked Wally a lot, and he is one of my favorites as well, but there does seem to be something missing in the whole 'rivals' section of this game... May/Brendan and Wally just don't seem to be enough to me for some reason... Maybe it's just because of the 5 6th gen X and Y rivals.
One thing that I'm surprised you didn't touch on Proto is that Wally is chronically I'll. That's one of the whole reason that he went to live with his uncle in Verdanturf, because of the clean air there, and his parents thinking that it would be better for his health. Now, as someone with a number of chronic illnesses myself, I can say that it is something that really chips away at your self esteem and self confidence, especially if you've grown up with illness from an early age, as I have and presumably Wally has as well. Those who are able bodied have a habit of simply not understanding what living with a chronic illness is like, and with Wally being naturally shy, to me this easily explains why he feels the need to conform to everyone's expectations, because most people with chronic illnesses are forced to do so. Just thought that it was a super important piece of this puzzle, and it really gets to the why of your theory, which I didn't really feel you touched on
I personally think you've got it all wrong. As I see it, Wally doesn't train Pokémon to prove himself to others, instead, it's his way for coping with his illness. Look at people who go through stress in a long period, some become obsessed with cleaning, creating a sense of control. What does a young, boy in the Pokémon world do to actually cope with his own weaknesses as a person due to his illness? He train Pokémon to get a feeling of becoming stronger as a trainer.
Fun Fact: Brenden is NOT the protagonist name in ORAS. In ORAS his name is Orlando (From the Demo). This goes hand in hand with the Alternate Universe Theory. Proto Mario
''Wally borrowed a Pokémon from Brenden's father. A Ralts.'' *Wally received Zigzagoon!* ...Yeah, nice try, Proto. *watches video again* ''Wally borrows a Pokémon from Brenden's father to *capture* his first Pokémon. A Ralts.'' ...Oh. ...Nvm then...
Ok, in the anime, Norman is May's and Max's father. In the manga, Norman is Ruby's father and Professor Birch is Sapphire's father, and finally in the games if Brendan is the player, Norman is his father, and May is Birch's daughter, but if May is chose as the player, it's the opposite. Does that make clear, everyone?
Hey love the theories you're putting out there I was just wondering if you might ponder any relations between scyther/kabutops and the anorith families I personally think they have some similarities worth looking at
I Think That in Alpha Sapphire Wally Was Able to Fully Ask"Will it be ok if I Become Your Rival?",&,I Said Yes so That I Could Help His Self Confidence
Not to nitpick, but he does change up his team, you battle him twice at the Battle Resort, the first time he has his regular team at higher levels than in Victory Road, but the second time he uses many new Pokémon (including a Talonflame and Garchomp) and they use moves and items that compliment them well. So he does improve to the point where he's the closest NPC to having a team that's something like you would see on Wi-Fi
My poor baby Wally..... He's been my favorite since Sapphire and still remains my favorite in Omega Ruby. He's so precious and cute! It's painful to see them hurt emotionally or physically!
But Proto, its rivals like Wally that make me wish that the Pokemon game's stories branches even a little bit. What if you lost to Wally and the story continued instead of going to the Pokemon center? How would he have turned out?
your theory is way off proto. wallie's confidence isn't killed by us wallie grows because of us. you'll find that as you go on in the game wally although staying overall shy loses some of his shier mannerisms like his constant stutter. and saying he's gonna grow stronger isn't him trying to be what he thinks others what him to be. his uncle wanted him to be a recluse staying in his house all day. he says no to that and becomes what HE wanted to be. a trainer. saying he's learned from his lost and will try to grow stronger isn't' a loss of confidence... it's growth
In my opinion, your battles with Wally actually boosts his confidence, to the point that he able to overcome a sickness that made him weak as an individual. The fact that he's able to beat all the gyms in half the time the player did shows that he could prehaps be stronger than the player realizes. His final battle also shows he's become tactically brilliant, with his use of held items you normally see in competitive play. That's a major change from the meek person we first met in petalburg; it's like he became almost an entirely different person.
Theory:Wally was able to beat the elite 4 due to Brendan's actions.1st point:Wally throughout the journey saw you as a goal, like the relationship between red and blue. 2nd point: At Norman's gym when Wally goes to catch ralts he most likely would have not known what to do or he would have been to scared to catch the ralts and he would have gone back to living his life not being a pokèmon trainer. 3rd point: At Wattson's gym Wally would have gone back with his uncle to verdanturf town once again, ending his adventure.
ralts restores wallys confidence, ralts becomes really powerful as gardevoir, and as it evolves so does wallys confidence and health, which leads me to believe his respiratory problems was related to mental health, possibly serious anxiety attacks, I'd even go as far to say it's social anxiety of feeling inadequate which is why he constantly goes on about doing better... this fits the move to verdanturf because moving out into the country air is a known help for people's mental states. ralts evolution really changes his self esteem because it's evidence that he is capable.... or he could just have asthma, and finally got a pokeinhaler from his local mart
All rivals are sort of the same difficulty yet they change up their team to try to better beat the player , but Wally didn't whatsoever. I mean it sucks he seemed better then the 3 rivals in X and Y getting smacked around by me all the time .
Actually, ..... Wigglytuff (the guild-master in MDEOT, MDEOD, and MDEOS; or, "Explorers of Time", "Explorers of Darkness", and "Explorers of Sky") is canonically a male. This is even stated off-handedly, throughout/at, multiple points in the games. Most of which are rather important plot points in the storyline, and you even get the chance to learn a bit about his past in one of the side stories. Back during his younger days, as part of an exploration & rescue team troupe - the very same one he mentions being in with Lobunny(spelling?).
I think the opposite because you could clearly see Wally confidence grows as you can see in the remakes how his behavior changes and get more confidence when throwing his pokeball
But....Ok I like how you read into what he said and it really is good....just to me I have a different theory. Wally use ellipses when you first meet him and his hands are held close to him afraid. He's sick and his relatives constantly say he can barely travel far due to his condition. After his defeat in front of Wattson's Gym we see his name written on every gym's Plaque over and over. Meeting him on Victory Road he's looking at you standing up straight with his arms firm. We don't see a shy kid lightly tossing a ball, but a strong trainer throwing his Pokeball at you. It's not whether he wins or loses but the fact he can look you in the eye challenge you. He holds a mega stone in his hand that hangs from his neck. Not only has acquired more pokemon and evolved them he has also went to the far reaches of a region to get a mega stone for his partner. Now we need to remeber he supposedly can't travel far yet has done this much. You have motivated him to risk death. This kid has done a 360 and knows what he wants. Not to beat you, but to test his limits on you. His shivering figure is gone. You are his hero...his champion...
I wish that in Pokemon games when you face your rival you can lose, yet not reface your rival. So things like that don't happen. Or maybe it could be just a few of the rival battles. Anyway it would be cool.
That lucky little guy... Finding a Ralts on his first try!
Wally: *Gets Ralts first time* Me: *Gets Ralts after the 4,000,000,000,000 time*
+Akatsuki Yomo Because Poke-Logic
Damn poke logic is that bullshit
Yeah and once when I did it he got a shiny ralts
+MadeofAwesome4ever and lets not forget that its a male lolz
we did not destroy his confidence
we gave him his confidence
if the player wasn't there, he would have never captured that ralts or made it to the pokemon league
link Are you assuming that the same gym leader that allowed Wally to borrow a Pokemon would not help him if we were not there?
LOL wut?
ProtoMario yeah okay
but still, if the player wasn't there, he would not have gotten the inspiration to continue and maybe even start his journey
icy_dew Yeah
ProtoMario What he's saying IS true!!#ItDatSwablu
Exactly thats what i feel
Why not this theory: how do Pokemon trainers know their pokemon's moves?
they test em out duh
The pokedex tells them. No idea how the pokedex knows though XD
Pokedex
Eren Aysan Pokedex tells them, their are numerous books around the world also.
Hah, I found a Ralts as my first pokémon in the grass in that game. :')
I highly doubt that Ralts was the first Pokemon you encountered in the grass while playing Emerald... If you mean the Pokemon you first encountered on Route 102 then its the same for me.
erm, no, it was during Emerald, I believe. Perhaps it was the second, but I found it very early.
I actually expended a lot of time trying to find one tho

Wally, you may be shy and lack confidence but you'll always be 1 of the best rivals.
and, BADASS cape
7 tales
Wally has a cape?
Ninetales Commander I rember him having one
But Proto in the manga Wally is only shy and feeble because he is severely sick
Shadowvlade84 But the game is not the Manga.
ProtoMario Wally is sick in the game too.
+ProtoMario wally is sick in the game too
Protomario when you beat Wally in front of the gym the uncle does mention that he is sick fill the question I'm having right now is what kind of sickness does Wally have I would say cancer but there's no evidence to support that

within the first 15 seconds of the video I already feel like a jerk cuz wally one of my favorite characters :(
same here :'(
+Superwhiskers yep! Favorite character
RafPlayz mine 2
yeah as my little sister would say we're all big meanies...
But Proto....
His name is Brendan, not Brenden
I'm Orlando
ShadowKnight Says.MEGA,SMASH is name is Brendan btu you name any thing you like so demo naiemd him Orlando
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!
+EpicFinish9 That dosent have anything to do with this XD Shia LeBeouf said that
JUST DO IT!
This theory made no sense to me at all. Dafuq? Wally's happy he fought you! And he is extremely powerful, even if he loses.
this how I feel about Hau in Sun and Moon. he's always so cheery and jolly even when he loses and loses and loses to you. I feel like hes holding in those feelings lol
Luis Alvarado
Malasada.
Proto I'm going to honest here and give my observation I had watching this video:
Something tells me you don't like Wally very much as a character.
As for the theory itself: It is very good and very sound. Depressing as all hell but quite good and logical.
Haruki Altager I dislike how they flesh out the character.
ProtoMario I can understand that and respect that Proto. However I for found him adorable and kinda relatable, cause I was similiar. I became competive cause I had a friend curbstomp me to often in Middle School.
So bias in my part. :D
Haruki Altager I would too, if the location he moved to wasn't extremely close to a volcano that spits out ASH all over the place.
Wallyyyyyyyy...
He's my favorite rival ^-^
I'M SORRY LITTLE BUDDY
COME ON, I'LL GET YOU SOME CAKE
SORRY ABOUT BEING STRONGER
Wally sucks
Well... Gen 5 is worst, you destroy the dreams of your two best friends...
Arsène Alucano for you're opinion and not all the Pokemon fans.... I like ten 5 actually
Crystalite Playz I am talking about the rivals. I love gen 5, but it makes me feel like the villian in BW, but B2W2 kinda helps by seeing how Cheren, Bianca and N grow.
Arsène Alucano stop with my favourite gen I will dislike all your videos
"Wally is N as a kid because they both have green hair! LOL LOL."
basically 50% if pokemon theories.
TheBloodThirstyvamp Truth
he's the only one who doesn't call you weak or send s hit
he dosent get his confedients crushed he developed to be a reasonably strong rival
OBJECTION! at the end of the Delta episode wally's father mentions that wally has gotten healthier ever since he became a trainer. he says he want's to beat you one day. you aren't destroying his confidence you are giving him a goal to work towards and he came close to his goal and he knew he could do better. if that's not confidence then i don't know what is. THEORY DEBUNKED!
Actually, during the "great disaster of Hoenn" Wally was in Victory Road. You can see this in a cutscene in ORAS after you beat Groudon/Kyogre.
How about: Why only the trainer you play as faints when the pokemon faint, but when you beat other trainers they just stay there, Standing?
im going to say it all the times i can, we should have had a fight with wally before victory road, something to show "he is working on it". i swear to god the first time i finished up PK Ruby and he apeared at the end of victory road, i onestly didnt remember who he was. He needed more screen time, one more battle. i would have liked to have a battle with him where he has a couple of weak pokemon like a skitty or a magnemite, and his raltz already fully evolved, something to show he is slowly becoming a rival, not a 0 to 100 turn around
if he listened to Shia LaBeouf he would not of list all hope and self esteem.
when I encountered Wally at the victory road I total game him his time he deserved, since I respect that little fella and love him to bits w
"RUBY"...*coughs* Manga*coughs*
I always felt so bad for beating him. He seemed like a sweet kid.
me too, when i first battled him i actually didn't attack him and just keept using howl and waited for him to defeat me,but i had a dark type and ralts is a psychic type so yeah
Yeah I'd imagine in his 80's he'd be a miserable old man.
Is it bad when I went to fight Wally my Pokémon were at full health and he still beat me..? yes? ok ;~;
Plot twist
Wally was just sad cuz his Ralts didnt evolve into a Gardevoir... If u know what im getting at ;)
Caleb DontGiveAFk Tru
Well he intentionally did that... You need a dusk stone to evolve a male Kirlia into a Gallade.
Why should I care that I destroyed Wally's confidence, its not my fault he sucks.
Because getting 8 badges is really easy
WHAT HE SAID
Dummyholezz Because he's a cutie. :3
lol exactly
Lol true
Proto, you are a robot when trying to emulate Wally.
I used to watch your old videos when your editing wasn't so nice but I've come back and I'm genuinely impressed! keep up the good work!
Great theory Proto! I liked the way you summed it all together with the pieces of evidence that you had, keep it up!
Also, If I may ask, have anybody bought shirts of the Raikou I made? :)
NirthPanter A couple have, but most people won''t buy any. I honestly hate it because I set the store up for the community and nothing.
ProtoMario Ahh that's not cool, maybe it's unclear what the money will be used for? I remember that you said that you would not take the money yourself (tho that would be a lot better, we could help supporting you) so maybe making the message a bit clearer? I don't know
+LaserLance125 GFS look in the description
LaserLance125 GFS
I think his name is spelled like 'Brendan', since that is how it's spelled when you choose your name in the beginning of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
Nuuuuuu wally:,,,( he's my favorite character
One of my favorites as well
+Victini Soul he is gay
Victini Soul Heya Victini.
I love Wally
kingofblox gaming/ minecraft, pokemon, and more! I liked Wally a lot, and he is one of my favorites as well, but there does seem to be something missing in the whole 'rivals' section of this game... One thing that I'm surprised you didn't touch on Proto is that Wally is chronically I'll. It seems like he actually enjoyed the battles and accepted those losses to me.
Fun Fact: Brenden is NOT the protagonist name in ORAS. In ORAS his name is Orlando (From the Demo). This goes hand in hand with the Alternate Universe Theory. Proto Mario
i hate my rivals...so destroying them mentally is just a bonus
''Wally borrowed a Pokémon from Brenden's father. A Ralts.''
*Wally received Zigzagoon!*
...Yeah, nice try, Proto.
*watches video again*
''Wally borrows a Pokémon from Brenden's father to *capture* his first Pokémon. A Ralts.''
...Oh.
...Nvm then...
I can imagine wally saying taste you later
See you later!
Smell you later!
Hear you later!
Taste you later!
Touch you later! ;)
Delta_player18 LMAO THE LAST ONE ;)
I-

Heh scrub I beat him with one hit
Heh scrub I beat him with one hit
TheShadowSkull1 my huge power azumarill ohko'ed everyone of his mons including magneton
Not really a theory... more like a fact
+Nathan Beard it is also how it happened in ORAS
I'm pretty sure that technically Norman is May's father
Ok, in the anime, Norman is May's and Max's father. wally isn't a bad trainer your character is just really good at raising pokemon.
...
...
... What's with your Wally voice? XD
Am I the only one that misses the booty pics that came with every "But Protooooo"? I can't be the only one, right?
HEY! He challenged me! I didn't challenge him he challenged me! He knew what he was getting into. I make no apologies
It's funny because in the manga his name is Ruby
WE'RE ALMOST EXTINCT HEEELLLLLPPPP UUUUSSSSSS!
I own all of the books up to hg/ss arc lol. I regret nothing
Well I own ALL of the books!
WE NEED YOU GUYSSS!!!
I am waiting until box set for bw comes out to buy them
Hey love the theories you're putting out there I was just wondering if you might ponder any relations between scyther/kabutops and the anorith families I personally think they have some similarities worth looking at
Did red disappear in order to catch mew?
Wally is my fav rival

Lol we fucked him up good. Great job team!
How does Wally kept seeing ralts
Me: It took hours to see a ralts
Wally: Because I'm confident!
how do pokemon trainers throw a pokemon without looking at it and still get the right one
Swallot. "Hey look there im on the screen and with my friends wailmer and wailord!"
Brendan, the Fluttershy of the Pokemon world.
Still, his victory road theme was awesome
Theory:Wally was able to beat the elite 4 due to Brendan's actions.1st point:Wally throughout the journey saw you as a goal, like the relationship between red and blue. 2nd point: At Norman's gym when Wally goes to catch ralts he most likely would have not known what to do or he would have been to scared to catch the ralts and he would have gone back to living his life not being a pokèmon trainer. 3rd point: At Wattson's gym Wally would have gone back with his uncle to verdanturf town once again, ending his adventure.
What if Wally is N when he was younger? But remember, it's just a theory, a GAME theory.
That would be bad ass
I think I will let wally win after I get the 50 battle win streak at the battle Maison
first off, Genius wally impression.
Might I suggest doing a theory about what Aron is.
that last battle with wally is awsome. the theme just screams desperation on his part, and I felt bad when I sweeped him.
your Wally impression killed me
Bidnus Da Bae He sounded kinda like a cowboy?
Wally sounds like Tavros Nitram.
Well in the manga the protagonist is called Ruby.
I think the reason wally was so weak is because he started off with a zigzagoon
Wally was way too overconfident for his own good.
And dreaming that he can be a rival
And I dun even treat him as a rival
As an ass
ralts restores wallys confidence, ralts becomes really powerful as gardevoir, and as it evolves so does wallys confidence and health, which leads me to believe his respiratory problems was related to mental health, possibly serious anxiety attacks, I'd even go as far to say it's social anxiety of feeling inadequate which is why he constantly goes on about doing better... this fits the move to verdanturf because moving out into the country air is a known help for people's mental states. ralts evolution really changes his self esteem because it's evidence that he is capable.... or he could just have asthma, and finally got a pokeinhaler from his local mart
"Brendan"
im kinda glad i threw that fight then
Interesting theory: How many enteis are there? Everytime a volcano errupts, a new entei is born
Wally gets incredible strong in the second rematch at the Battle Maison. This fact proves that he actually did keep his promise of becoming better.
All rivals are sort of the same difficulty yet they change up their team to try to better beat the player , but Wally didn't whatsoever. I mean it sucks he seemed better then the 3 rivals in X and Y getting smacked around by me all the time .
But Proto, why are you being so rude to little Wally? He's still much more worthy of his name than Silver!
theory: Wally sounds like Bill Clinton
Great as always!! I still want you to do a theory on why Wigglytuff acts the way she does in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon!!
You are his hero...his champion...
wow
Proto assumed our gender.
Plumpy21 pingu
Well, he does captured a Ralts and pisses me off.
"The two ancient colossal titans"
Yes
but I don't care about wally's confidence.
Dejection Desolation Neither did I when I crushed his petty team with my overpowered almighty mew.
TinchoX I showed no remorse after one shotting his entire team. Scrub should have trained harder.
spiritofthewolf15x Yeah, he didn't try hard enough.
a small fact for proto after you finish and catch kyogre ir groudon you can see wall before the gate if the victory road so he was already there
I wish that in Pokemon games when you face your rival you can lose, yet not reface your rival. So things like that don't happen. Or maybe it could be just a few of the rival battles. Anyway it would be cool.
I always thought this, when I faced him I was always like why can't he win and become champion :'(
it didn't help that he had a male gardevoir in gen 3, nobody want's a male gardevoir in public
LOOL I HAVE A MALE GARDEVOIR WHOOPS
