    I rescued a baby swallow. Part of the mud nest broke off, and one chick fell. The other two stayed in the broken nest. So I took it home and fed it mealworms and superworms until it was able to fly away and get its own food.

    I mean it's cute but it did die after this video... The parents would have been around because she is so young, and withdrawing her from that environment did her so much more harm than good. You said she had a full stomach... That definitely means the mother was around because she most likely wouldn't have found food alone :(
    If you see a baby bird that looks like it has been abandoned move it to a high up safe space, keep an eye on it for a few hours to see if the parents come back. Only then if they don't should you take it in to 'care' for it.

      Georgia P this is what I would have ideally done. The cats would have killed her immediately had a put her back outside without being able to fly away. I wasn’t prepared to do that to her.

    I’m sad today, as my Charlie cat after 4 years, killed a bird, 😞 outside my bedroom door. I know it’s their nature, but he never was interested before. Only Bonnie, likes to do that. I get so upset. Often trying to save birds. Now My Charlie started it ☹️ Thank you for looking after this one. One bird I saved, sadly flew out the window and a magpie detected she was still quite weak and grabbed her 😩 I was horrified.

    You can get by with wet kitten food and cut-up crickets, followed by live mealworms, eventually letting the baby "hunt" its worms own in the box. That's where we're at at the moment with ours, who can now fly. Going to release at the place where he/she fell from the nests. Falcons got the parents, bit have moved on now. I'll post an update.

    So sad she was put down. We had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. Two baby swifts still in the nest which had had to be moved due to roof renovation. We were advised NOT to call the RSPCA or a standard vet as it most cases they will just put them down/kill them. So we found a local wildlife centre instead called Hessilhead (in scotland) and drove them there to be looked after and then released back into the wild. Try and find local wildlife rescue centres ...💖💖💖

    its a myth that you cant touch babies, birds have very little sense of smell so just touching them has no effect on the parents care. You should however never remove a fledgling from their location because fledglings are meant to live on the ground, the parents leave for just a few hours but stay close by. The only time you should remove a baby bird from their location is if its a hatchling on the ground, baby is visibly injured, or parent is dead nearby. If you arent sure about removing the orphan please call a local wildlife center and ask what to do, dont just do what you, with no veterinary training, feel is right.
    Once an orphan is removed you need to take it to a wildlife center, nobody without proper training should ever ever try to rehab wildlife.

    • @edengarden6811
      @edengarden6811 5 років тому

      Wow i did not know that! We had a swallow baby just now who we removed from the ground, he could not fly at all. So we think he fell out of the high nest. We brought him to a bird care place.

    • @SobrietyandSolace
      @SobrietyandSolace 4 роки тому

      I rescued a baby swallow that had fallen out of a nest along with another fledgling that was dead beside it. The little thing was in shock, lethargic and shivering. I brought it inside for a few hours wrapped up in a tea towel with the heater on and fed it some egg yolk. To begin with it would only take one or two mouthfuls and wasn't pooping. A few hours later the bird seemed much more alert and active, but not panicked and was eagerly taking food. My shift at work was over so I had the freedom to get a ladder out to try to locate the nest and return the baby once I was satisfied it wasn't injured and seemed in better shape. Popped baby back in the nest (it then pooped over the edge) and all seems well so far a few days later. Prior to this I raised a fledgeling in a country where there were snakes, scorpions, lizards etc in the trees and 2 cats + several large dogs running around on the ground so didn't feel right about leaving it unattended. Baby again was extremely lethargic and weak, had an injured foot that was curled up. Could barely open it's eyes and had to force it's mouth open for food and water to begin with.Over time I tried to encourage baby to flex the foot and improve grip strength on my finger until it was functioning normally. Baby grew quite bold, jumping on to me demanding food every 20 minutes or so. I switched from feeding egg yolk and cat food to bringing live bugs to teach it that these things were food. Started preening Was growing more alert and active, practising flight. Adult feathers started growing in nicely. I felt proud. I had to leave the country so care was passed on to family before release. I miss birb, but we both had to go back to where we came from.

      there's actually some people that take care of swallows, if a BABY swallow looks like it fell and can't get back, ask any known person if there is a lot of cats, if there is not, safely find its nest and and put it back, if there is, you should take it home or get someone to take care of it, if you decide to take it home, make sure that you have a cage or a box, if you have a box but not a cage, make holes on the box, (make sure that it's an openable box) put the baby in it, and leave it in a mildly dark place of your house, at this point, you should get baby soup and water for it, put some paper on the box, and see if tries to make a nest, that'll make them a little bit calm, then, after 3 weeks or less, (don't worry if it's been more than 3 weeks) you should consider getting a big or medium wooden cage, i recommend starting with a small one, since it probably does not know how to fly, once it is 5 months old, you should consider grabbing them, and quickly lifting your hand (no, not a lot, maybe just lift like 0.5cm) away from the floor and see if it can fly, it will probably flap its wings, that is the time to train it to fly, keep doing that same height lift for some time and it will learn how to fly, and when it becomes 6 months old, start getting them normal food, and worms.
      extra tips:
      -make sure you always have toilet paper to clean poop
      -don't try to touch it all the time
      -don't try to make them friends with other species (such as cockatiel)
      -don't make it too angry
      -you should HAVE a big cage when its 4 months old, tought the food and water needs to be on the lowest layer of the cage.
      -feed baby soup manually, that also applies to worms.
      -find who he/she likes the most in your house, then tell that person to spend more time with the bird.

    Same happened to us also we took it in as it was unable to fly and luckily we had meal worms and fed it to him we grew greatly attached and he would learn to fly and land on my shoulder. Then he learned how to hunt mealworms flying across the house and grabbing them. Eventually it was release time so now he Romes in the forest

    I found a baby swallow in the middle of a busy road a half hour ago. He/she cant fly and walking is also not going that well. He/she eats and drinks very good and she loves sitting on my shoulder/neck. Am I wrong for taking the baby swallow home? I really couldnt leave him/her and there was not really much nature around. She is sleeping in my sweater right now and Im gonna wait til the morning. Maybe Im putting her back somewhere close to that road or Ill try to find a bird shelter.. maybe any suggestions?

    Parent birds do not care whether a chick has been handled by humans. That is a mammal thing. Scent is important to most mammals, but hardly at all for birds.

    UPDATE: we ended up taking the bird to the vet after they told us she would be looked after and taken to a sanctuary where she would be cared for until she could fly and they would release her back into the wild (we were in London for a work trip so we’re unable to care for her ourselves in the end). We visited the vet the next morning and they told us they put her down instead. RIP, little one. You will always have a place in my heart.

The vet called me while I was at work, telling me he wouldn't make it because he had inner bleeding in his brain... I had to ask the vet to put it down. It was so sad.
