  • Whether you are tackling the Why MBA question in MBA essays and MBA interviews, or simply introspecting at some point in your career if an MBA after work experience is worth it, it’s the most important question you'll come across during MBA admissions. And one that can drive you nuts.
    Many executives go for an international MBA after 4 - 10 years of experience in IT.
    But there are also others - experienced engineers, doctors, lawyers, chartered accounts who're looking for a top MBA in USA, Europe (UK, Germany), Canada and India. Plus those in government jobs or in non-profit / NGO
    As you seek the best answer to the why MBA question after engineering, MBBS, law or any other bachelors / masters degree in Commerce (B.Com / M.Com / CA), Science (B.Sc / M.Sc), Arts (B.A / M.A), management (BMM, BMS, BBA), here are some tips, reasons and benefits of an MBA degree to consider.
    Narrated by Sameer Kamat (founder, MBA Crystal Ball).
    - Top 5 benefits of getting an MBA after work experience (as opposed to MBA for freshers).
    - Best answer to the Why MBA question: Is there any?
    - As a bonus we also cover the 'Why MBA Now' interview and essay question.

      Hello sir,
      I wanted to pursue my masters in USA in MBA field and I want to know the difference between MBA in HR, MBA in general and Masters in HR.
      I’m not good in maths n economics and I have a bachelor background in psychology, sociology and another bachelors degree in education from India.
      I graduated in the year 2014 after which I worked for Qatar airways a premium cabin crew so do you think I should opt for mba field as I’m interested in the customer service department. Kindly let me know . Thanking you.

      We have to admit we haven't heard of this program. Be cautious about programs that seem cheap (in terms of tuition), as you may end up paying a higher price for the decision in the future. Ensure you talk to current students to understand the ground realities before you take a decision.

    Hi im on my last term of a BA Leadership Management degree and was thinking about a MBA. Kinda torn between General management ( more flexible ) and a MBA with HR specialization ( seems good career choice)
    However I don't have any graduate job experience, im a non traditional mature student btw. Would getting MBA hold me back in anyway without experience? I would rather go for MBA now while im fresh and work part time, rather than gain experience first before going for MBA. Im willing to work from entry level to progress in future.

      The international MBA programs we focus on expect several years of experience, and for good reason. Working for a while will give you better clarity on where you want to take your career. The choice of electives will become easier at that point.

    • @MBACrystalBall

      There's no 'best' in terms of specialisation. You'll have to pick one based on your career interests and goals. It doesn't have to be related to your bachelor's degree.
      We're not aware of any top ranked MBA program that differentiates on those aspects i.e. federal vs provincial.

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  4 роки тому

      We work with several CAs each year and they do have a better conversion rate than engineers. You'll find several such stories on our site. Like this one: www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2016/12/02/chartered-accountant-isb-with-scholarship/
      But apart from their CA, they also have good professional profiles, clear career goals and impactful essays. Diversity can help applicants stand out, but won't take them far if the rest of the application isn't strong enough.

      A high quality general management MBA works well for most consulting aspirants. Since you already know about the technical aspects of manufacturing, an MBA would add a management layer on top of it. Part-time programs generally don't have the same market value.

Before you take the plunge, talk to other PSU candidates who've joined MBA programs and managed a job change. Ask them for the pros and cons of their choice. If you still want to go ahead, then take the GMAT and write to us after you have a competitive score.

    I am 28 now and I have done my masters in engineering from India and have one-year work experience in MNC India. I am currently working in the Fortune 500 company in Japan for 4 years. So, I have overall 5 years of work experience. I can also speak Japanese fluently(did a diploma in Japanese). I have published my research paper in IEEE during my post-graduation. I have also participated in technical overseas conferences in Australia, Canada, the USA as a Speaker. If I combine all these into one, how strong would be my application compared from others? And, What are the chances to get into top MBA schools? Now, I am preparing for GMAT. What score do you think would be enough for me to get into elite MBA schools?

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  5 років тому +2

      Hi Ankit, thanks for the kind words. With your permission, I'll be a little more blunt in answering your query. What you've done here in sharing your profile details, is to put some (not all) the jigsaw pieces on the table and expect the reviewer to build a picture of it. Maybe some of those pieces aren't even relevant for the picture you may be trying to build. This is a common issue we see many applicants doing when they first approach us. The biggest tip I have for you would be to make it easy for the admission officer to see where you're coming from and where you're going. The latter part is completely missing in what you've shared. That makes it difficult to know if any of the accomplishments you've shared would really be relevant, forget impressive. Start with the bigger picture in mind and then give me the individual pieces, hopefully already connected. Would you agree?

      Without having a relatively clear career plan with short/long term goals, it would not be a good idea to invest in any degree. Take a step back and focus on that first. The choice of which degree to choose becomes easier once you get that clarity.

      Hi Darshan, it won't be a good idea to go for an international MBA without work experience. The average experience in most good programs is around 5 years. That helps students get a better grasp of what's being taught in the class. And even if you get in, it would become difficult to get a job abroad after graduating, when you are competing with others with several years of experience.. Read this to understand why Work experience is important for international MBA applications: www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2011/08/21/work-experience-why-is-it-important-for-international-mba-applications/

      Hi Rishabh, a lot of folks go for an MBA to re-skill themselves when their industry is going through a bad phase. So your plans aren't unusual. However, the choice of whether it should be an MBA in India or abroad and which specialisation you should take up, depends on your longer term goals and work experience. Don't rely on others to take that call.

    Thanks Sameer for creating this video.
    I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this:
    - I have been working for over 10 years and have been feeling stuck in my career.
    - During coffee chats, I was suggested to consider MBA or MS Computer Science (I don't have an undergrad in CS but saw there are some bridging programs out there for those who don't).
    Wondering what do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science?
    - I think MS if usually for those who usually have around 2 years of work experience but may not be appropriate for those with more work experience.
    - I think with MS CS one tends to become a software developer writing code. Pays well but just writing code.
    - With MBA people usually tend to go into 3 buckets (consulting, IB/financial services & tech). My perception is that the work life balance of consulting/financial services isn't great and also getting there in mid 30s is tough but tech (product management seems to be the most popular role in tech post MBA, though the current tech economy isn't great with layoffs) seems more open with better work life balance.

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  Рік тому +1

      Your thinking is in the right direction on all 3 points. There are other areas that MBA grads get into, apart from the 3 that you've listed. And it can also become riskier to go into an MBA after 30.

      Hi Rashid, looking at an MBA as an escape route will not help. Here's a video we've created on other reasons when an MBA will not be worthwhile. ua-cam.com/video/ro2DiNLLt8s/v-deo.html
      Since you don't have much work experience at this stage, an international MBA will not be helpful. You could consider the traditional 2-year MBA in India if you're sure that an MBA is what you need at this stage. Having a Bsc degree is not the problem, it's the lack of a strong post MBA career goal. Once you nail that you'll be able to convince adcoms on why they should accept you over other strong applicants.

    This is Kishore and I am a software engineer(Systems Engineer) with work experience of 3.6 years. I feel stagnated as I've understood that I would be growing specific to the company, not have a broader exposure and 5 years down the line I cannot see myself progressing in IT industry with my current position.
    I feel pursuing an MBA would add great set of skills to understand the business world and give me great exposure to the corporate world providing me wide range of opportunities to look.
    I've given CAT exam last year but couldn't score much(82 percentile). Through some online research, I found that after 4 YEARS of work experience CAT isn't a viable option.
    So I'm thinking of taking GMAT exam but I think profile plays a very crucial role in getting admissions into International Business Schools. I would like to build my profile but I don't know where to start.
    My two concerns:
    1.How to build a good profile right now at this age.
    2.Is pursuing an MBA after more than 5 years of work experience a good option for career growth?Supposedly if I want to pursue MBA from USA or Canada or Germany!!

    Hello sir/mam, my name is Anuj and I am an engineering undergrad currently in 4th year of my B.Tech. I always had a dream of joining GSB but my current engineering college is a tier-3 college. My full story goes like this, I want to pursue M.Tech from a tier-1 college in India. So, right now I have an admission offer from NIT Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T). I am choosing M.Tech. first because I wanted to get an exposure for my MBA admission and also because I wanted to have an Masters degree in my technical field so that I can use that in my future ventures. So my question is that should I prepare again to get into IIT's or should I go to NIT-T. The plans after M.Tech is that I would work for 2-3 years and parallelly give GMAT and then approach the B-Schools. However, my main focus is GSB. I have been following MBAcrystallball for some time but I didn't find any cases similar to mine. So the question is whether M.Tech from IIT will give a better chance of admission than NIT-T.( By IIT I mean the top 4 like IITB, IITM, IITD, IITK).

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  5 років тому +1

      Hi Anuj, as a general rule work experience matters more than academics when Adcoms evaluate profiles. If you'd like to pursue an MTech, do it without worrying about how it'll impact your MBA admissions. Also, since you accept that the undergrad degree isn't top-notch, it would be a good idea to spread the net wider than just one highly selective bschool such as GSB.

    • @anujjha625
      @anujjha625 5 років тому

      @@MBACrystalBall Since, my undergrad isn't top notch so that is also one of the reasons why I wanted to pursue M.Tech. from top-notch colleges in India. That's why I had the doubt about NIT's or IIT's. Is there any added benefits of being from IIT's than from NIT's in India.

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  5 років тому +1

      Adcoms are aware of the fact that getting an Mtech from a top institute such as IIT isn't the same as getting a BTech from the same, since the competition and selectivity aren't the same. Which is why we suggested going for it only if you see real value in it for your career, and not as a means to impress bschools.

    • @anujjha625
      @anujjha625 5 років тому

      @@MBACrystalBall Then what should I do in this case ? Because even after doing M.Tech from any college I will get a job in Software companies and not any consulting or IB. And how will I be able to reflect my leadership qualities through an engineering position/perspective. I am willing to do anything in order to make things right now. I mean this shouldn't be the case that undergrad matters so much that it won't let anyone admit into GSB or other top B-schools, right ?

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  5 років тому +1

      If you see the success stories on our website, you'll find many candidates who had tech/software experience who went on to attend good programs. Focus on building up your professional experience and try to gain real world skills and not just academic knowledge. And you're right, acads (including undergrad/postgrad degrees are just one aspect). Make sure your profile has more dimensions, and there are better things to focus on than the degree.
