What season and episode is this
@@emilyk6510 Season 10, Episode 5 'Retro', it's always in the description
What happened to the first baby, the one in the hospital?
She got treated but her life span got cut short
@@luislovera2351 knowing advancements now, she's probably still alive.
If you ask me, Dr. Hutton should have gotten his medical license revoked immediately when he said that HIV doesn't cause AIDS, which caused most of his patients to die. Also, Martin Mull should have gotten an Emmy for his performance in this episode.
What do you expect from a guy that you have to count the pills every time he subscribe medicine to you
Yeah, when he went posting online that HIV doesn't cause AIDS, the higher ups that saw that should have yanked his license.
He's forced to give up his license as part of his plea deal later in the episode.
*licence ;)
If doctors got their licenses revoked whenever they gave false medical information, we would have even little drivers less.
It's so wrong to know you have HIV/AIDS & sleep with someone unprotected without telling them! He could sue her for that
Where I live, it is legally prosecuted as attempted murder because you are knowingly giving them a lethal disease (your body and infected fluids are the weapon). If the victim dies from it, it is charged as murder I, with intent to kill.
She'd likely be prosecuted for it too.
Yes he can, all he has to do is prove that she fully knew and was aware of it.
@@johnnythao she did that herself. She claimed she was living proof that the doctor was right, then keeled over from a toxoplasmosis induced seizure.
i say you should get life since you gave someone a life sentence.
In case younger people need more context, this episode of SVU aired in 2009, and was based on a semi-famous AIDS denialist named Christine Maggiore, who had died due untreated AIDS in 2008.
Like the character in the show, she had also passed AIDS on to her daughter, which she left untreated. Her daughter Eliza Jane died in 2005 at 3 years old. She had older son who apparently never got HIV, he would be an adult now.
Like the show, Eliza Jane’s death was blamed on an allergic reaction to amoxicillin by her parents and the AIDS denialist community.
A lot of people in AIDS denialist circles had the disease themselves, and they started passing away in large numbers in the late 2000’s, which is why you don’t hear about this “movement” anymore.
but we still got anti vaxxers reviving a ton of illneses
Thank you.
Welp. Talk about retribution... In the end, the power of denial can only be toped by the power of utter stupidity.
Yikes.....
You don’t hear much about the movement, but it has made a resurgence in recent years thanks to people like RFK Jr. He wrote a whole book about AIDS denialism, then went on Joe Rogan’s podcast spouting his conspiracy theories, and Rogan ate it up.
“She’s not going to make it to high school”
If the babies temporary foster parents got her actual help, the HIV would’ve been treated early and she would’ve lived longer :(
they were led to believe false information
being from an under developed country theres no way they'd have the medical knowledge to dispute whatever the doctor told them
I've witnessed babies sicker than her, born with full blown Aids and somehow their immune system somehow reverses all that. It's very fascinating..
a friend's brother was born HIV+ and his foster parents (my friend's parents who later adopted him) were told he likely wouldn't make it past age three. he made it all the way to 18, got to go to his senior prom, and passed shortly after. sometimes people surprise you and live way past the expiration date they were given
@@londonm3161 Hydeia Broadbent was an AIDS activist. I remember when she was a little girl. She died earlier this year at age 39.
They come from an African nation where the leader spreads lies and misinformation about HIV/AIDS. He claims that he can cure people by rubbing a special herb poultice on them but only he knows the recipe. They came to America and were introduced to the quack who shared the same dangerous beliefs that the couple had been indoctrinated with
I had a lecture in one of my grad school classes in 2008 from an MD that had the same ideas about HIV...the dude ran an HIV clinic, which is why he was asked to teach in the HIV lecture. We left that lecture pissed off and went to the department chair to complain, he never taught at the university again. Just having an MD doesn't mean you're not a crackpot.
MD doesn't guarantee mental health, good ethics or morality. Props to you and your fellow students for speaking up.
100% accurate. I have a kooky MD friend that has deeply disturbing beliefs that one would hope med school would have weeded out.
WoW you were misinformed. HIV was created in a lab by our government to kill off masses of people. That Dr is right.
This episode cemented my love for Greylek as an ADA. You can see how passionate she was the second she cross-examines Dr Hutton and shows off the HIV+ members of the jury who are alive today because of their medication. A team up of her, Casey Novak, Barba and Carisi would've torn the defence to shreds.
Greylek is HOT too.
I would have LOVED to see that!!!
Loved Novak, she was my favourite ADA
@@louisacoote2337 hated Donnelly for censuring her for getting too personal with a case, then hypocritically returning as an ADA just to railroad an abuse victim into jail.
wouldn't the defense have stricken any jury members who were HIV+?
That doctor should be arrested. I’m not just sure, I’m HIV Positive.
Definitely. I'm sorry.

@@camgold2154 AIDS isn’t funny, Kyle!

Corner. Now
I didn't know HIV denial was a real thing until I saw this episode. I did some research when I was in college and it turned out to be a real thing, unfortunately.
You should watch, The Boy's In The Band. It's an old HBO I believe movie about the start of it and the Reagan Administrations handling of it. Cutting fund's for the CDC. And the stigma that became associated with it. The bath houses were the worst super spreader area's. But it took the courage of Ryan White and many other's to turn things around. And Princess Diana's hugging of people with Aids did a lot.
@@nancyvillines4552and the charity she set up .. that Elton John took over after she died. She really did so much to raise awareness about aids.
@@nancyvillines4552 It's actually called And the Band Played On. Matthew Modine, Alan Alda, and Ian McKellan are in it and it's really good. Really tragic but good.
I didn't know either. Strange behaviour. How can people just be so dumb?
@@laramaaike3050 you would be surprised how things were back then. Did you know in the 70's it was illegal for women to have credit? History is a great learning experience 😊
Martin Mull was a great actor, he put so much thought into his character so much so that it made us hate him. That's how you know how good he was. RIP Martin Mull.
And Richard Belzer.
Rest in peace Martin Mull , he was a great actor . Even playing a creepy doctor .
I wouldn't call him creepy, more like contemptuous.
Unfortunately, I actually knew a guy through a mutual friend who was from Southern Vietnam that didn't believe in HIV/AIDS. He's dead now, from an aggressive form of STD.

If a doctor disagrees with proven medical facts they should have their actions viewed by a medical board
I watched this episode, although I'm not sure if there was any mention of how long Hutton had been a doctor.
@@GreyDoofus88 shouldn’t matter
@@MrMonkey2475 True. But considering how many others have died during his tenure as a doctor, because of his misguided beliefs about HIV it does.
@@GreyDoofus88 no it doesn’t matter when. The moment his belief about medical facts being untrue was known he should have had his actions viewed by a medical board. Doesn’t matter if this is day 1 or his last day.

As someone who has been living with HIV since 2009 and an AIDS diagnosis since 2010 episodes like this hit close to home. I despise people regardless of profession and education level who endanger people's lives with lies and misinformation.
Comprehensive sexual education that includes HIV and the Big 3, testing, prevention, and treatment are PARAMOUNT!
I really hope Dr. Hutton got his medical license revoked after getting arrested and imprisoned for willful negligence.
He avoid prison but he gave up his license.
@@zygas25 nah, he was still imprisoned for criminally negligent homicide. He proudly gloated how he would tell his story in prison.

This doctor poisoned the minds of both the birth mother and those who took care of her in both cases.
Dammit, Gene! The baby has AIDS! You're a detective, not a doctor!
He's just an idiot with balloons
Oh my god that’s Russel from 2 and a half men. The pharmacist who uses his own supply and gives away anything to anybody asking, “What are you a cop?”

@@kieranwaterson she was a defence attorney for a long time. She was partially the reason Novak got censured.
She also played another role in Law and Order: criminal intent. She's the suspect in that episode, season 1 ep 20 "Badge". I only know cause I just finish watching it. Law and order really like to reuse actors lol.
She's been guest on the show for many years.
One of Martin Mull's more serious roles. He was a great actor.
The taxi driver is Babs Olusanmokun. He plays Dr M'Benga in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
TAMARA TUNIE!!!! Some nice writing for her in this one.

I thought I recognized him!
if baby is allergic to PCN, she shud never gotten amoxicillin
She probably wasn't allergic, it was more likely too little, too late.
@cbq6286 Susan didn't even know Lisa was allergic. She only knew what Dr Hutton told her, and he believed in his delusional state that it was the antibiotics that killed Lisa, not the PCP pneumonia.
lmao at the random Viola Davis cameo
It bad enough when someone gets AIDS but getting it at less then a year old. I can't even find the words. Even if it is a show.
Digging up the child is crazy work
Thrust - is an common fungal virus that can occur most commonly in the mouth (white mouth) or in the vaginal area (also known as yeast infection). Healthy Babies can get it very easily if their formula bottles aren't sanitized enough between each use (for some babies the bottles and bottle nipples need to be washed in hot soapy water and also boiled in salted water). It can also get it if their diapers aren't changed enough. White mouth can also be triggered by certain medication - like certain inhalers for asthma for children.
It's spelled thrush fyi.
i haven't seen the full episode, but from what i can tell, the mother doesn't need to be locked up. The doctor, absolutely, but all she was doing was following the advice of a licensed medical practitioner, a license that was given out by the state. The state failed to withhold a license from a doctor that does not follow evidence based treatments, and because this doctor was allowed to continue his practice, the false medical advice led to children dying.
She did however willingly infect somebody with HIV that is still a crime.
@@Ashbrash1998 yes, but her doctor told her it wasn't a big thing. Her doctor told her it doesnt matter. After all, hiv doesn't cause aids. Who knows what else he told her.
@@Ashbrash1998 which her defence attorney would've attributed to her beliefs that HIV was harmless, which at most could've given her a slap on the wrist.

That’s a heathy baby not chubby
If u willing infect someone i believe you should get life in prison
@@lctamoya this was before it became a crime. In the episode Quickie, a man was arrested and charged for infecting dozens of women with HIV, but not before one of them sprays his face with acid.
A follow up now with the boy, if he's still a live. One of Stabler's best moments.
@shaunallen9337 I think Tommy would still be alive now thanks to advancements. But I'm amazed he lived so long without having any severe illness since he spent his entire life not knowing his diagnosis.
RIP Martin Mull 😭😭😭😭
I was just watching this episode last night on Hulu. So crazy.
That guy is in everything😂😂
RFK Jr. should have done a cameo for this episode.
As far as that Doctor, he was such an idiot. Greylek should’ve stayed on for at least two more seasons.
Oh, trust me, I saw this episode. It was really the doctor was an idiot the lawyer, the mother, the kid as well I would’ve sued them for life in jail
???
Man Gene Parmesan went off the deep end
They said it was a trick baby. Why would they go on tv to find the dad? Lol
If you watch the full episode it was just a trick to get more people to call him about the doctor. Which is why the mentioned his name that’s how they received the tips
“God help them”😂 Elliot’s interactions with the doctor were hilarious in this episode.
R. I .p. Martin Mull Use a very Talented actor, Always remember him best as Vlad Masters/ Vlad Plasmius From Danny Phantom, One of my favorite cartoons.
Ditto
This is why I will not get a blood transfusion. If you can’t save me without it then let me go
The risk that you'll get tainted blood is tiny.
You're really willing to die for a sub 1% chance of getting hiv?
You're choice i guess. Jehovas witnesses also refuse blood transfusions.
I am fine with adults deciding for themselves they'd rather die than get a simple transfusion. Their life, their choice. Im only against people forcing their kids to die from easily treatable things.
Blood transfusions are supposed to be tested and proven safe.
Because people got contaminated blood 30 years ago before the US screened people effectively for HIV? That's pretty shortsighted. I've had multiple blood transfusions, some of which probably saved my life. I don't have HIV. I got the transfusions when I had cancer. I don't have that anymore either. Maybe you should value your own life a little more. If you bleed too much during childbirth or surgery, have ulcers, get in an accident.... all kinds of things could cause you to need a transfusion ...you're okay with dying? Don't have children, please, if you have so little respect for your own life.
Man, Russell really became a quack (the late Martin Mull was Russell, Charlie's pharmacist on Two and a Half Men)
Human lies ... science doesn't ❤
Despite it all, this remains one of my top favorite SVU episodes
The writers were really stretching on this one. Amoxicillin allergy causing death due to inflammation has nothing to do with untreated HIV.
I think the lawyers are stretching. Desperate to catch the doctor on any mishap.
@gorgan4714 that was the reported COD. Lisa died of PCP pneumonia but Dr Hutton in his deluded state attributed it to the antibiotics.
This poor baby 😭😭😭😭😭
How would a baby be able to get advanced AIDS that fast? Isn’t that practically impossible?
RIP Martin Mull.
My dad died of pneumocystis pneumonia FWIW. He wasn't HIV+ but he had lymphoma and the chemo triggered it. So the TV doctor might have only seen it in AIDS patients but actual doctors see it in all kinds of immunocompromised patients
It's crazy how nobody mentioned Jessica Pimentel
OM-FREAKIN-G could just substitute covid virus for HIV virus in thus episode.
RIP Martin Mull
My very favorite part of this episode was when the kid with AIDS refusing treatment talks to the Christian Scientist kid with cancer who was disowned for seeking treatment.
The mom is on OITNB as a bad mom in jail trying to care about her kid too little too late
Russell continues his malpractice in Law & Order
at least his malpractice in Two and a Half Men is basically selling weed and drinking cough syrup
The doctor hired Annalise Keating as his lawyer!
poor baby.
Sure natural remedies are often best ... But not when someones immune system is shot
What happened to the baby?
As we know so far she's alive, though the doctors believes she wouldn't make it to high school.
She lived through the rest of the episode, but it was likely she would die before making it to high school.
The baby looks kind of funny in the thumbnail
What kinda world do we live in
Doctors are supposed to be the educated ones. It is not the non medical professional's fault who does not know better as a layperson. We are told to trust doctors. When we are growing up, we are taught that the doctor knows what to do
Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease…..sometimes……
Oooo a HIV and AIDS episode on SVU
And what about the other babies out there like this who don’t get help ?
If I remember correctly, it turns out that she actually had the HIV a lot longer than they ever realized.
Is that taxi driver Babs?
I can't believe this. I'm not going to say anything but, that baby is adorable. I'm only 24 but I'm planning to have 4 babies at the age of 28
That’s gonna mess up your body. Pregnancy is a big thing and 4 consecutive pregnancies with little to no recovery time between each one would run anyone ragged. I would strongly reconsider.
Please don't.
Mom looks like they probably didn’t know that she was HIV positive.
Am from gambia and we don't sound like that at all lol
That darker skinned guy sounds familiar.
Is that doctor m’benga from Star Trek as the taxi driver????
that just state that you have it?!!
So it was cournel mustard in the clinic with a lie
This quack makes me have even less faith in doctors...

The doctor should be prosecuted but i think thr way they treated the mother was wrong. She took her kid to a doctor. Its the doctors fault he encouraged misinformation.
Its also wrong for them to exhume the childs body without the mothers consent.
On the flip side, it doesnt seem to make sense that the doctor prescribed amoxicillin. Its typically prescribed for strep, which he did not say the baby had.
Who knows if they'll ever find a cure for AIDS and HIV. And who knows if they'll everfind a single and concise name to refer to both of them ("HIV/AIDS" is too long, in my opinion).
Well, HIV and AIDS are terms for two separate things. HIV is just the virus that infects the body, which, if left untreated, only then becomes AIDS- the actual disease. And AIDS only develops years after an HIV infection if the infection is not detected and treated, so if provided with proper treatment in a timely manner, infected patients don't even have to worry about ever developing AIDS. The two terms are often grouped together as the same thing which is rather misleading.
There was one man that was cured but that was only a one in a million chances case. Timothy Ray Brown.
HIV is the early stages when you test positive but it’s just chilling in your system and you have no signs of it. AIDS is when it turns aggressive and tanks your entire immune system in a hurry leaving you vulnerable of death to literally any infection at all. It’s given two names because of how drastically different the two stages are, and which stage you are currently in affects what treatments will work best for you.
They're different things though.
Hiv positive just means you got theq virus. Aids is when you're actually sick.
HIV becomes AIDS when your white blood cell count falls below a certain number.
The drugs hurt the kid born or the kid breast feeding.
At least they have a chance of saving them. Letting the disease go rampant causes more damage then the meds could.
Why was mom arrested? She was going by what she thought was a trusted doctor and did what the doctor told her.
Childen neglect. Even if she trusted the doctor she should have went to another (or a hospital in this case). It's negligence.
Still neglected the child and still infected several people without informing them of her condition.
@@ellierice9184 Greylek said it herself "and since any reasonable person knows that HIV causes AIDS, that's criminally negligent homicide."
Anyone with two brain cells knows that HIV causes aids.
She should’ve changed doctors the moment she realised he wasn’t gonna treat her for aids.
