  • The Godox R200 Ring flash for AD200 Strobe has been released. This is the 4th head available for the Godox AD200 in addition to the fresnel, barebulb, and magnetic round head. The ring flash includes the flash, bracket, and umbrella mount. Optional accessories include a reflector, carrying case, and 20, 30, 40 degree honeycomb grids. You can also get a carrying pouch for the Godox AD200 body to wear at your side while using the ring flash. I think this will be a popular alternative to the R1200 ring flash extension for the Godox AD1200, and the previous AR400 dedicated ring flash. The R1200 requires the AD1200 which is expensive and specialized. Whereas the AR400 is a standalone unit, but outdated as it doesn't have TTL, HSS, or any advanced features. This R200 is compatible with the most commonly owned off camera flash on the market, making it highly accessible.

Great review and sounds like an interesting product. I can see that being useful outdoors to give a bit of fill in bright sunlight or in the studio with a large reflective umbrella. You could basically use it as a cheap focusable reflector. Sure, it won't be a parabolic, but it might be nice when you want the umbrella to be just a bit more punchy

Ok, looks very interesting. Especially the small weight makes it very handy. But I have to buy a AD 200 now - I felt so happy with my AD400 and the two 300s. And you are right, the 1200 solution is an expensive one and with the extra reflectors it has very similar lighting characteristics. But I‘m not sure if the power is enough. Especially for fashion shoots with short recycle times or the use in a white umbrella. In a parabolic umbrella (I have a very nice silver one from elinchrom) it would be maybe better….

Ringlight - the AD200 way. What made the AD200 so popular, was that it wasn't "only" a flash, it was a complete ecosystem, making it EXTREMELY versatile (and with the AD-B2 powerful). With the Round head, they introduced another ecosystem (continued by the V1 and AD100) of magnet attached modifiers. Now we get a ring flash head built on the same philosphy of creating a complete ecosystem of options. In my use of camera gear, where I may do macro level product photography one day, and beauty the next, and then kids portrait the third day, etc, having one complete ecosystem of tools makes it possible for me to function at all.
Add to this that the entire AD200 ecosystem interfaces flawlessly with the entire range of the modern "System X" 2.4GHz flashes, from the 12ws MF-12 up to the 1200ws AD1200, all on one standard, and even with multiple choices of controller (X1, X2, XPro, and most of the speedlights), and it truly is a cross-system (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc) system, and I think we have a winner.
I have asked my local photo gear pusher to order up the complete kit for me (the Bag, Ring flash itself, beauty dish, grids for both flash and dish, gels, and an extra AD200pro just for this, because I have no problem seeing this as a PERFECT tool when doing focus shift stacks in macro work (because - recycle time. I was considering buying the standard reflector and gel kit for them as it's substantially cheaper than the round head. Second shoot, I kept the R200 modeling light on full power. It reduced the problem, but did not eliminate it. The last time I kept the studio lights on and the R200 modeling light on high. That kept the ambient light level high enough that her pupils were small and there was no noticeable red eye.

They actually give out the same amount of light, HOWEVER, the fresnel light concentrates the light into a tighter beam (Into a pattern similar to a 35mm lens on a full frame camera), whereas the barebulb is essentially omnidirecitonal. Even if you add a reflector, the reflector doesn't focus the light (that's what the fresnel lense does - it focuses and projects the light).
Look at it this way: What outputs more light: Midday sun or midday sun through a magnifying glass? The magnifying glass didn't change the output of the sun (which is 150 million kilometers away...), but it did focus PART of that sunlight into a focused beam, The fresnel lens does the EXACT same thing.

Both need firmware updates to work with the R200. I followed your video about doing updates (the whole insane G1, G2 G3 etc) but both of the 200's show "USB not recognized". I have tried them both on my old laptop running Windows 10 with a USB A>A, two laptops running Win11 with USB A>A and C>A cables and on my Win11 desktop. All get the exact same error. On the 200PRO, the screen lights up in all cases, so something is getting to the unit. To make sure it wasn't the cable or some other thing, I updated all four of my triggers (XPRO and X2 Fuji and Canon) with no issues. I did try the R200 with the AS200 to see if it would work and it seems to be ok in manual, but TTL just blasts at 1/1 power (for all four triggers). I tried USB A>A on my wife's iMac and the AS200PRO didn't show up at all, although the screen did light up.
I do have an extended warranty on the PRO so thought I would file a claim as Windows 10 (and 11) also pop up that "the device might not be working properly". Other than the R200, both AD200s work fine.
Any thoughts? Thanks. And I love your content and have purchased not only Godox, but a bunch of Glow modifiers, so thanks for that info also.

I know you asked this question of Rob but I thought I’d chime in seeing as I had the same issue. I just took delivery yesterday. When trying to update my AD200 from my new Alienware laptop it gave me the same warning and the flash wouldn’t show up on the computer. Then I tried it with my HP desktop that is a couple of years old, but also running Windows 11 just like the Alienware, and it worked fine. Using the same cable even. So I don’t think the issue is with your flash. I’m guessing it is some sort of Windows driver or settings issue. Before doing the update my R200 behaved exactly as you described. Now it works perfectly.

@@VibePhoton Thanks for the info. I pulled out my old desktop and ran it in safe mode and that still didn't work. Frustrated again, and knowing from your comment it could work, I checked on some Fuji Godox forums and found that I (like many others it turns out) was using the wrong USB port. There is a port next to the on off switch that I never noticed, the mini USB, and using the cable that fit there it worked first time. So thanks for getting me thinking about it again. My pro is under an extended Square Trade warranty through B&H so I sent it in for them to see what was wrong. But my older 200 is not under warranty, so I used the "correct" USB port and it worked first time. And as you said the R200 works perfectly. I don't have the PRO at home since it is at the repair facility, but looking at the manual, there appears only to be a USB C port (which I used and didn't work) not the mini USB near the on off switch like with the older model. Did you update the PRO or the older one? Did you use the mini USB port?

@@VibePhoton Final update. The AD200 as noted is now working great with the R200. I heard back from Square Trade that they can't fix the PRO and so they will reimburse me for the original cost I paid to B&H. I'm not sure if they just do that because it's cheaper and/or easier than trying to repair something they don't see often, or if they truly can't fix it. Although the price has gone up some, I'll get a new unit which hopefully already has firmware up to date or will work for me to update it. One positive, they tell you not to return the battery, so I now have an extra battery for both my older AD200 and the new PRO I'm going to buy.

It is actually quite useful for portraits, as it is a larger source than the fresnel and it gives those donut catchlights that seem so popular as well as giving a light exactly on axis with the lens for that arty look.
As he mentioned, it's good for use in an umbrella as it spreads the light more evenly.
Although they were initially used for macro work, allowing you to bring the light to the subject without shading it with the camera as well as being able to close the aperture right up for maximum depth of field.

Because its used with the AD200, im guessing this is still too powerful to be used at dimly lit events? I use a sigma 14-24 for club events, but hate the vignette caused by the camera mounted flash not having full coverage when im relatively close to subjects (even when bouncing sometimes as a lot of clubs have black ceilings and walls are blocked by people). I guess I could stop down, but I'd rather stay at 2.8 and a slow shutter speed to get some ambient light and background motion.
Edit: spoke to soon, I hadnt got to your power output test yet. So my answer is yes, far too powerful. Thanks for this great video.

Would it still be to bright with the AD200pro at 1/256 power? Remember that his F11-sumthing was at 1/1. If my maths is right (and it sometimes isn't), and the 14-24 being an f/2.8 ... if the power is f/11 at a meter at 1/1, the 1/16 at same distance should yield ... f/2.8. But remember that this close the falloff is extreme. Anything beyond one and a quarter meter would be so many stops darker the flash is close to invisible.

I have found a serious issue in your new product about Godox R200.
      I have Canon R6 + Godox AD200pro + Godox Xpro-C.
There is no HSS high synchronization support on R200.
I activated HSS high synchronization on my Godox Xpro-C, and icon is on.
The shutter speed is only 1/200 supported. If I shoot at 1/320 or 1/1000 there will be only 5% of the picture will come out another part of picture goes dark.
I have updated firmware of my Godox AD200pro to 1.5 but HSS haven`t work correctly also on R200.
I suppose the problem is in firmware.

How do you get the output down on the r200? I need to shoot in high iso of 6400 but the shots are always over exposed, I don’t have the option of hss and I need a shallow dop for low light, I dial my power down on the xpro to -3 but it is still over exposed even in Manual flash of 1/256
The only control I have is to shoot in low iso, I updated the flash and trigger but still get over exposed pics compared to if I used the round head, I usually shoot at iso 4000 at 125th with f 2.8 and the pics come out great, diffusion might help to some degree but still think the flash is overpowered, don’t understand how my pics are over exposed at 1/256 power

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  Рік тому

Well, if you're using a flash in close proximity to a subject, there are simply camera settings that a flash, even at minimum power of 1/256, will produce overexposed results. You can get a sheet of ND8 gel and cut the ring flash shape to cover the flash and that will drop its brightness by 3 stops.

I get that the bulb is bigger but is it not designed for macro and portraiture? If this is the case why with the controls is it op? @@shaneagnew3733 The latter portion is definitely mistaken. If you used an AD600 at the same distance, same power, with a reflector, it would undoubtedly produce brighter results than you can get with the R200. It's in no way "OP", the settings you are using are just highly sensitive to light. ISO 6400 + f/2.8 with a direct flash up close is just a wild expectation. Macro users would likely be at ISO 100, F/8-F/16, which is 8-10 stops less light then where you are at.

It's certainly more than say, a speedlight on top of your camera. But, it also creates images that an on-camera speedlight can't. I think it's better than both previous options, the AR400 (due to the large size of that system), and the R1200 (due the requirement of the AD1200 Pro).
