    Just got my first AD200Pro a day or two ago. I'm like you and a lot of other photographers/creators in that I'm always trying to hone my tools to do things either better than what they were designed for, or just different. It's nice to see others trying to maximize their investments and getting down to the nitty gritty of what they'll enjoy using. Great channel!

    The weight of each component really adds up! I bought an ad200 and a softbox umbrella and while each part is light individually, when you start rigging things up the weight creeps up on you. Thanks for sharing your findings Markus!

    Great review of the AD200 and multiple lightweight options. Big fans of the AD200, our tinkering is more inside of the box than out, but works for us. We use the Flashpoint Bowens head (Flashpoint eVOLV Dual Power Twin Head with Bowens Mount AD-B2) that can use either one or two AD200 bulbs to go with either one or two AD200 bodies. Our go-to is 90% this. An AD200 bulb is plugged into and remains part of the AD-B2 (center prong set). This eVOLV mount with an AD200 bulb remains attached to a Glow Foldable Beauty Dish (Bowens Mount, Silver, 40"), which offers great diffusion and AD200 bulb protection. With this set, the chunkiness and repeat AD200 body with bulb clamping of an S bracket system is eliminated and takes less than a minute to open up and put on a light stand. An AD200 body is then quickly clicked into the flush AD-B2 receiver slot (left slot) on the back and we are good to go. I checked the weight of this modifier combo (without an AD200 body), and including the travel cover weighs in at roughly 4.5lbs/2.04kg. Might be a show stopper for some, but might be an option too. Applaud your immense experience, knowledge and time Markus that you extend to all of us in the craft, many thanks.

      I have several AD-B2s, I showed them here ua-cam.com/video/rB8y2Tec9Pg/v-deo.html but I never use them. Way too heavy and bulky for me. At that point, I might as well use an AD600 (which I often do), almost the same size and weight but more powerful. I ONLY grab AD200s when I want to be as small, portable and lightweight as possible and the ADB2 setup is definitely not lightweight or small, just like an S-bracket, which is why I made the recent video showing the most lightweight portable softboxes that attach right to the front of the AD200 without any of the hassle or weight. Iua-cam.com/video/WeFt5FkWXfU/v-deo.html

      @hmg7871 Рік тому

      @@MarkusPix Sure thing. I understand that your scalability to smaller options is for lightest and most compact for your travel and location requirements (possibly others). The options I provided we do not find cumbersome or heavy for our uses. Unlike our prior S bracket use, we find that the click and go of the AD200 body into the AD-B2 a welcome reprieve from holding the body to a non fixed distance into the modifier and then screwing the body clamps into place. Albeit it comes at a cost of weight, it reduces (for us) the hassle factor and delivers repeatability.

    I looked into an AD200 a few days ago, after your video about them. I've wanted one for a while, but the prices were a bit high when they first came out. Well, they're still too high for my wallet. I have three of the Canon radio-controlled flashes, and I like all the cool things they can do, so I'll continue using those. I haven't really done any photography for a year, since my sister who's going through a divorce had to move in with me. Another big strain on the old wallet. The AD200 is definitely not something I need. I just think that Godox has really come out with some great equipment, lately, and the AD200 is such a cool form factor with lots of power. Maybe when she moves out and I start shooting again. Thanks for showing all of the modifiers and connections for the flash. This will all come in handy.

    It's so rare to see such a dedication to something else than ultimate quality even at the expense of fun and ease of use. I did myself weigh everything down to smallest adapters and bought several lightstands only to see, which would be the best mix of stability, portability and reach. Spoiler: Lastolite/Manfrotto LS1159 won. Almost 3m up, air cushioning, very wide reach of legs, quite solid for any portable gear, and finally neither weighs a lot at 1.3kg nor folds to anything excessively long at around 84cm. Everything else I've checked/read about either feels like a monopod because of short legs or is a lot heavier.
    A topic related to AD200 that is still not spoken of is mounting the light itself to lightstand. Believe me, story does not end with ditching S-bracket...

I love your content and I don't know of any other channel where I could find the information you present. This is all so good to know when weight matters. I will say there is an advantage to keeping some decent weight in a lighting setup - and that has to do with the inevitable wind factor. I'm definitely not bringing sandbags to all locations and rarely have an assistant to hold the light stand so having some amount of weight is handy so it doesn't go toppling over when someone exhales next to it. That said, keep this up because your channel is filled with golden nuggets like this one.

    Fun video, as usual!
    That bracket that you spray-painted silver features the "Universal" strobe mount. There are numerous inexpensive strobes that are made to accept that mount.
    Also, some "twist-flat" softboxes will squeeze right onto the front of that bracket, without any other pieces.
    By the way, that bracket accepts barndoor wings.

    • @tuppb
      @tuppb Рік тому +1

      @@MarkusPix
      Yes. That is a "twist-flat" soft box.
      The advantage of the universal bracket is it's versatility. It can fit on a few different strobes. It accepts both twist-flat and rod type soft boxes. It allows one to move the light source deeper into the soft box, and it accepts barndoors.
      With the barndoor wings, one can "cut" the direct light or one can easily clip diffusion gels (and/or colors) to create a smaller "soft box."

    I'm *trying* to do a similar thing with my adapters. I'm a photographer and getting into continuous lighting for headshots. I don't want to go away from bowens mount to the godox mini mount completely because then my ad200s / flashes won't fit when I need to freeze motion. I *hate* s-brackets as well, but I use them with speedlights.
    I have an ML-60 with the godox mini mount, and I rigged the ad300/400 bowens adapter to it. I had to shave two notches down with a utility knife, but it works!
    I love the handle with the npf battery plate, but it seems pointless to use it with an s2 bracket and then have nowhere to secure the batteries. So yeah, I'm down the rabbit hole at this point!
    I'm currently looking for a solution to go from godox mini mount (ad300/400) to bowens. It seems so simple, but I've yet to find a true adapter. The answer of "just use an s2 bracket" works ok for an ad300/400, but when you have two large npf batteries dangling, it makes a lot less sense.

    The reason they stopped making the plastic version of the “budget speeding” with four screws is they couldn’t take the stress of the softbox rods for very long and would break. So now, just the metal one is available since I have been looking. Might be available used however.

    Applause to the persistent pursuit of usability in light modifiers. In your last video, you showed us how umbrellas actually produce very soft lights. In my view, there is another big advantage to the reflective umbrellas, in that you can position them higher than the light-stand. With softbox type modifiers where the light source is positioned towards the subject, the modifier is angled down from the top of the light-stand, requiring a light-stand that is tall enough to accommodate the model's height.
    Can you do a video that compares the bulk and usability of softboxes vs reflective umbrellas, with the whole set including the light-stands?

  • @jscottbradshaw
    @jscottbradshaw Рік тому +1

    You're missing a key equation here. The speed ring holds all of the weight and transfers it to the tripod. The AD200 holds no weight. By using these larger modifiers attached to a quantum mount- you are transferring all of that "reduced weight" to the front of the AD200. I'm sure it will support it for a while but thats a lot of leverage on a very small connection.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  Рік тому +1

      All the modifiers I showed in the last video (did you see it?) ua-cam.com/video/WeFt5FkWXfU/v-deo.html are definitely not too heavy for that mount or else Quantum would never have created it. It's a legitimate mount designed to hold modifiers (within reason of course) The ones I showed weigh almost nothing, and none of the ones I featured put too much strain on the mount, I've been using them for over a decade under the toughest of situations. If I was going to use big heavy softboxes, I would not be using the AD200 anyway. Lightweight and portable is what the 200 was created for and that's how I'm showing how to keep it.

    I wish they made a Bowens to Godox mount adapter LOL...TBH, the entire photography lighting mounting set up a very antiquated and old. It really needs an entire overall to bring up to the 21st century. LMFAO

      You mean something to attach a bowens softbox to a light with godox mount? They have those.

    I hate the built-in mount if the godox. I attached an accesory and it's imposible to remove it 😔. I don't know how the heck it got stucked....

    The Quantum QF35 seems like a no-brainer for the AD200. But does it still mount on a light stand?

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  Рік тому +1

      Of course. The AD200 mounts to the light stand and the QF35 attaches to the front of the AD200. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1337404-REG/quantum_instruments_qf35_octa_softbox_kit.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI%3A514&gclid=CjwKCAjwzY2bBhB6EiwAPpUpZh1-452QbZykgavU5ee4VFUhoMxy7u7P1OBgy8A_u6j5FIYd95gBpBoCThsQAvD_BwE

    I did a similar thing for the ML-30 / ML-60 to add a bowens mount without using an S2 bracket: ua-cam.com/video/oIr72V3g6l0/v-deo.html , I've actually taken it a step further and I'm working on the follow-up video, it involves drilling holes and grinding down a speedring haha
