  • YEEEHAWWW!
The Ragin' Cajun is back! Earlier this year, I inadvertently deleted my You Tube account and lost all my videos. Among them were several rare Doug Kershaw songs from an old PBS show called "Fiddlers Three" which starred Doug, Jean Luc Ponty and Itzhak Perlman. I dug for the VHS tape but never could find it so I assumed I had tossed it after my initial transfer to digital. Just last week, while cleaning my work room, I found the tape! I will upload the 4 Kershaw songs as well as the show finale that starred all three fiddlers. This was Doug's second song, "The Battle of New Orleans".

My dad in the early 70s would wake us kids up on the weekend playing the broom and Doug Kershaw blasting from downstairs as he made his way to each one of our bedrooms!! Great memories!!!

I saw him at the halftime of a Saints game in the Superdome back in the 80s, that was my favorite halftime show ever. The Man is Cajun Electricity. Did you know he grew up in a Cajun speaking family & learned the fiddle 3 years before learning English.

Krista. Dang straight it is. We are all a part of the Battle of New Orleans. I visit that solemn battlefield field often! I will visit again this week. America should visit the Chalmette Battlefield (New Orleans) as soon as possible. Louisiana is where we stopped the enemy cold.👈🇺🇸👍

Paul Parker, I have a cool story for you. I come from a family of musicians also & Doug has played with them. Back when Lake Charles Civic Center used to host concerts (sometime in the 70's I think), we went to see Reba and Aaron Tippin I think. Whoever the introductory singer was did not show up so Doug stepped in.
The Civic Center announcer came on stage to inform the crowd of the change & offered money back for the tickets. A lot of people actually left. When Doug got onto the stage and started playing, some of them turned around and came back!!
In classic Doug Kershaw style, he started with Louisiana Man. He then leaped off the stage & ran up and down the aisles playing his fiddle. When he got to the line "they call my Mama Rita", he grabbed a lady's hand sitting in the aisle seat & danced with her. It was his Mama!! The crowd went wild. We really didn't need to see the others after seeing him, but of course we did.
I've seen Doug many times since then, but this one will remain the most special in my memory.

What a great story! Thanks so much for sharing it with us all. I have never had the opportunity to see Doug in concert. But I come from a background of wild and crazy Michigan rockers like Iggy Pop and Ted Nugent (the Motor City Madman) so I would have been right at home at a Doug Kershaw concert.

Thought I lost this guy! He was my break through music man from top 40's/bubble gum, to Motown being my favorite, then my brother Richard introduced me to Hendrix, then rock and roll and then came Kershaw! Saw him on some old TV show and many did not get him in the hills and he was not played on the radio in Kentucky, Ohio, Texas or Alabama back then so I kind of lost him. Then his last name came up and a loud bell went off In my head and I am so very very happy to hear his music again! God bless his soul! What a talent! Thanks for posting! 😁✌

I saw Mr Kershaw at the Filmore East as lead band for Ten Years After and he was a new flavor that night. He was gettin some trouble from the (infamous) groupies in the first few rows and after doin a few ripping songs he sat down on the edge of the stage, looked right at those gals and played till he had them with him....it was absolutely amazing and when he"d done it he got up and started dancin and playing Liggy Diggy Li with that intensity only he could....When he and the band left that stage Alvin Lee from Ten Years After had a real warm crowd! Never forget that performance by Kershaw he was amazing.

Back in the 70's, I dealt blackjack at Harrah's in Tahoe. Doug played the little showroom that had large windows so people playing or passing by could see the show inside. His show got so wild that crowds gathered and blocked the casino floor. Customers stopped playing to watch. Doug left the little stage, came out to the casino floor, jumped up on a craps table, and played for the crowd. It was incredible, but they never booked him for that room again. He interfered with business at the tables.

I watched this show on WTTW in Chicago. I was a teenager and really into Doug Kershaw's music. What is funny is, this show introduced me to Jean-Luc Ponty whom I had never heard of, and I became a huge fan of jazz-rock fusion as a result of seeing him on this show. So, Doug Kershaw is responsible for my becoming a huge fan of modern jazz. I'm still a huge fan of Doug, of cajun music and also of zydeco.
