Tnn's `American Music Shop' Brings Top Performers Together
July 03, 1993|By Wayne Bledsoe, Scripps-Howard News Service.
NASHVILLE - On a network filled with music, "The American Music Shop" stands out.
Nearly every show of the Nashville Network's "American Music Shop" (9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Tuesdays, TNN) is an event: Country diva Emmylou Harris performs with new star Trisha Yearwood; legendary singer-songwriter John Prine trades songs with upcoming singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding; young country star Dwight Yoakam picks with bluegrass great Ralph Stanley; Ireland's foremost band, the Chieftains, performs with Ricky Skaggs and Chet Atkins.
It's a show where individual music artists perform together, often for the first time, backed up by some of the best session players in music.
On one recent show, the host was Nanci Griffith, and it includes some of Griffith's favorite songwriters-Janis Ian, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Frank Christiansen.
Backstage, at a television studio in Opryland, there is a happy buzz. The artists joke, eat and prepare for their parts on the show, while the artists' management and TNN employees keep things moving. On the soundstage, the house band runs through the night's numbers.
"American Music Shop" premiered in March 1990. The show's creator and executive producer, Brian O'Neill, says the idea was to make each week's musical host a person known to most country music fans, then slip in lesser known talented artists-most often people whom the host liked. That way, he says, both the audience and the artists win.
The show, TNN's fourth most popular program, seems to be a particular favorite among other musicians.
It doesn't hurt that the members of the house band have followings in their own right.
Led by master violinist, guitarist, mandolinist Mark O'Connor, the band includes Jerry Douglas, a man who has nearly reinvented the dobro; guitarist Brent Mason; bassist Glen Worf; drummer Harry Stinson; and keyboardists John Jarvis and Matt Rollings.
"In developing the show, I sold the network on getting the very best possible house band that we could get," O'Neill says.
"And that was going to be part of the draw for the show-at least from the artist's perspective."
O'Connor, probably the most popular session musician in Nashville at the time, was thrilled with the prospect.
He says the show offered the first chance for television audiences to get a look at how Nashville's studio musicians work.

I love that Doug removed the bones from the lower half of his body to be able to dance like that :)
Fricken spaghetti noodle!
Still laughing at this
😂😂😂
Bro's a walking slinky..
✌️😂✌️ 🕺🕺
Doug Kershaw + Swamp People = some butt kickin' Cajun phenoms!
Doug Kershaw is literally one with his fiddle.
I think he has music in every nerve in his body. He can play several instrutments as well.
The Ragin Cajun... Never disappoints
I listened to Doug Kershaw all my yrs in Texas great to listen after 50yrs
If there can be rappers and disco stars in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this man surely belongs in there.
are you sure he'd want to be
The best Fddller in the world
Mr.Doug Kershaw
For that type music best😊
I don't know what Doug Kershaw smokes, but I want some of it. What a talent -- his performances NEVER disappoint.
HAPPY 88th BIRTHDAY Mr Kershaw!!!
I love the way he holds the fiddle
Never has there been a more fitting nickname.
It is so sad that we no longer have talent like this in our world anymore.
Amen Bro. JOHNNY FROM ALABAMA
Crazy that this is Doug Kershaw at maybe 30% of his power level
I was lucky to have seen Doug Kershaw in concert at an all-night bluegrass festival at the University of Montana field house in Missoula. They even served a pancake breakfast in the morning. Kershaw was awesome-came out in a velvet-like suite, threw it off later and mowed through a half dozen bows during the performance.
Mid 70’s
I love Doug kershaw. My Dad loved him too!
I can't even explain how happy Doug Kershaw makes me
I know exactly what you mean if this doesn't get your toe tappin your dead :-)
Doug Kershaw is a national treasure !
Wowzers-all you can say!Keep shreddin those bows Doug!
Saw this amazing musician in 1974 when he was in Regina, Sk. Canada. All I can say is "WOW, MOST AMAZING & UNIQUE FIDDLE PLAYER TO GRACE OUR MUSIC WORLD! " WHAT AN ENTERTAINER - FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM THEN AND STILL LOVE HIM NOW! Regardless of your favorite music genre there will never be any one who cannot fall in love with this Cajun Fiddler's music. ENJOY!!
Plus, isn't he just cute as hell? A true original. I agree. And Mark O'Connor's a genius; loving and giving collaborator.
@@patricias5122 YES!! ON ALL ACCOUNTS!
The thng I like about Doug Kershaw is his energy level. He happens to be a great fiddle player & I aspire to his level of competancy (Cajun music), but really, half his
act is his personna!
And the third half (?) is the perfect voice for Cajun music.
He also plays something like 28 instruments!.
Holy crap, I made that remark 7 years ago LOL I am definitely a better player LOL
The one and only, never to be duplicated Mr. Doug Kershaw !!! :-)
thank god
Only Mark O'Conner would be able to play a harmony part to Doug Kershaw. Doug is all over the fingerboard, how'd Mark have any idea where he was going?
What a showman !
ROCK STAR!!! LOOK AT THE WAY HE HOLDS THAT FIDDLE. NO ONE EVER LLIKE HIM. I LOVE YOU DOUG!
I had an album with this song played and sung by him on it back in the late 60's or early '70's. It is impossible to not be happy when you hear such. As a Texas boy I had never heard such and even seen such before. I think I wore the vinyl off that album at the time, as I played it over and over and over. I saw him on a few tv performances afterwards and he was great and even greater with each and every performance. Nothing at all like the performers of today who generally suck at the stuff they call music these days.
Great song from two very talented musicians. Doug Kershaw really walks that fine line between ultimate showman and total weirdo.
Hi William; I know what you mean. But I have to disagree with you! He's far away from a total weirdo...just a brilliant ray of sun, unpredictable.
@@patricias5122 bless your heart
God bless total weirdos! They screw-up often, but when they don't they create magic.
I wish I saw Kershaw when he was really young, and still experimenting (doing weirdo stuff) with his showmanship.
That is why mature Kershaw is genius.
Just beginning a long-term love affair with Doug Kershaw's fiddle playing. :)
Once again Doug Kershaw sets the place on FIRE. What a Fiddle Player and great sense of Humour and Energy. World Class.
That audience was not on fire. They appeared to be unconscious. I do not understand. I guess I'd have been thrown out because there's no way I could listen to that and not dance like a crazy woman.
How can this fail to make you anything but happy? It's pure joy condensed into music!
Could you imagine playing live on stage with your childhood idol? What an adrenaline rush, to match the synergy of this performance given in love. Kershaw, with his love of the fiddle/violin and the star, for his love of both.
simply the best ever
Not just a talented musician, but an amazing entertainer as well. He wants his audience to have as good a time as he is having!
2 Legends playing a great song its a dream
I Saw Doug Keyshawn at the Minnesota State fair back in the 1970’s or early 80’s.
Never forgot the orange blossom special!!!
Ive never seen music move through anyone like it flows through Doug Kershaw or Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Such a gift to watch Mark & Doug here on stage. ty for posting.
I miss these performances 😢 they were 👍 great 👍
Now friends and neighbors that's music and top entertainment, and I don't care who you are.
Kershaw is magical!
Give that man some room!!! Amazing!
wow! unglaublich - lebensfreude pur - + dann dieses absolut phantastische spiel ---
Love Him So Much...SO MUCH FUN
Doug has got to be the greatest fiddler of all time. Saw him years ago doing this song sitting on the branch of a tree on TV and was instantly a fan of Cagan music. So thankful for UTUBE so I'm able to watch these great videos.
I could watch him play a thousand times..and still love it everytime.
Doug is literally one with the fiddle you never see anyone cradle it like him and dance its so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. Thank You Brother for this awesome performance and look who you inspired I am not going to lie to you I worked at a Super 8 for 10 years and this is the song I would pump on my way to work to get me through another night 🙂
I’ve never seen anyone do karate and play the fiddle at the same time before. ;)
In a belt buckle and tight jeans no less. He probably did a line of blow before he went on stage. lol
Reminds of the movement Elvis did on stage
elvis was second class performer compared with douglas, sorry to say!
Mark O'Connor does not stop beaming, through this whole incredible duet. . Here you go, kids. This is as good as it gets. Right here.
I first listened to Doug Kershaw when was in HS, more tan 50 years ago He never gets older; only better and better!!!!
Doug Kershaw is the man!
I defy anybody to watch DK without smiling!
WOOOOOOOOW! This is influential!
Most amazing guy! None better anywhere. Miss seeing you live Doug.
watching for 5o years off and on great talent and fun
Hah! I play that song on guitar and harmonica (and sometimes fiddle), but never with the amount of energy that Doug displays. Hey-yeeeeh!
OMG Doug Kershaw ND this song just make me stupid happy 🤪🥰😊
Dear God that man can play he is one with the fiddle :-)
Knew a "roadie" with Doug in the late 70s. So cool! Love this guy!
I don't care who you are, or how "religious," talent is talent, and Doug can straight up PLAY A FIDDLE!!! AND...a kickass showman!!!
GOOD JOB Doug!!....made a statement!!
I am 75yrs old and he still tricks my trigger🤪💁🏼♀️🇺🇸
Im 70 triggers my Weapon
One of my favorites
Grew up to this music and in the same area of La. as Doug did! Best fiddler ever! Love the song, Have heard it by many Cajun singers in local dance halls where I lived in my younger years.
SUPERB ! WOW ! punchy !!
FABULOUS !
This was one of his more subdued renditions, believe it or not. Others are nuclear. It is hard to comprehend how someone can play any instrument so well while whipping it around, jumping and yelling.
Just watched again. Mon dieu!
Maybe that's what caused the incomprehensible lack of reaction from that audience. They were scared to move. Or dead.
I play music with a fiddler who has tons of experience, master's degree in music, is a professional luthier and knows fiddle inside and out. I showed her this video and she said she "didn't understand how it was physically possible" for him to play the fiddle like that haha.
@@lucygray6162 No, they had respect. They sat in their seats so they could enjoy it....the applause at the end was wild.
He dances while he plays and still never misses a chord.
Have been playing fiddle for 25 years and i'm re inspired by this Cajun phenomenon !!! Inspiring
awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Just freaking amazing!
Only one Doug Kershaw!!!😊👍👍👍👍👍
SHAZAM!Can he play that thing or what!
What an incredible performance!!!
WOW!! AMAZING..how could anyone not like this performer?!
Mark, thank you for sharing this. It's become one of my most favorite videos.
I have been listening to Doug Kershaw for years and admire his wonderful musicianship in his Louisiana down home music. He is also an extraordinary showman!
Super!
Such fun, love Cajun music!Beautifully played fellows. Great job! You two are so fortunate and blessed to play together to make such glorious music that God and all the heavenly Hosts must smile and delight to hear. I could listen to this over and over and over 20 times per day. I play classical piano but nothing tops well played fiddle cajun duet music.
J'adore.Bravo.
One of great fiddle. Players Kershaw
Amazing talent!
He's a wild man, ain't he? 😄
Wonderful.
Absolutely Awesome music

Wow! That was incredible!
awesome love him to
Thank you for uploading this, I have not heard this song in ages, it's always been a favorite of mine. God Bless You.
You just got a new subscriber.
First time I ever saw Doug Kershaw was in 1971 - in this surreal movie called, "Zachariah" . . . kind of a Hippie Art film version of a gunfighter ballad. But all the outlaw "gangs" were bands - like The James Gang, Country Joe & The Fish, etc. - and the storyline was that Zachariah and his best friend became opponents in a gunfight. Zachariah was the fastest gun - and so all the other gunfighters came looking for him to challenge him and win the title for themselves. Doug Kershaw sort of played the part of the Greek Chorus.
He has to be a major coffee drinker!! What fun.
It was great..
From France.
Bravo Maestro!!***
What a fucking killer this guy is!! You cant fake pure joy and this guy has probably inspired as much joy while playing as anyone Ive ever seen. God bless youtube!
