It looks really good. I live north of you in Canada and I cut my lavender back each year to 3-4 " high. Never gets woody that way always new growth. I cover mine with dried leaves and it has survived for 4 winters. Lavender likes to be on the dry side
I live down in 5b zone i started mine from seed this year too and it got huge I was reading when to clip back first year and was told to shear it before end aug so thats what I did .how did you do yours.
@@lavendercrowl5695 darn i hope it comes back in spring its still doing great but our winters can get minus so I guess if it doesn't do well ill have to start over. Thank you.
If you have never been to the lavender farms on Maui- you must! I buy my mosquito lotion there every year! It is one of my favorite places, rows and rows of lavender... magical. Their lavender mosquito lotion is amazing and works 100%, if you have ever spent time in the high country jungle you know the mosquitoes are huge and extremely persistent and it's the only thing that works!
Wowser, most definitely agree with you about the size they have grown. I'd chalk it up to 3 things, 1... Soil they love. 2....no competition and 3... That black landscape fabric has reflected the warmth back into the soil and lavender loves that! Something I don't agree on... Do not cut it back. Take all the flowers off now. Do not cover till really cold hut you can get yr hoops ready b4 ground freezes. The reason not 2 cut it back is all that new growth will help 2 protect the crown and roots. The time 2 trim it back is in the late spring when you start 2 c new growth. Next yr it will bloom earlier. Those flowers u c now are because of all that goodness of growth and the late warm weather. Lavender can send out some second flush of flowers but skimpy. I've grown over a hundred lavender plants in yrs. Have 5 shades of purple, white and pink. My fav light pink one is called Jean Davis. A great Canadian supplier fairly close 2 you in Ontario is Richters Herbs. Anyway... I notice u just snapped off some Dandelions... If u don't get that whole long tap root it will grow back and be even bigger in its root system next year! 😁 Wish I had a huge field like yrs 2 grow in rows as such. Are u going 2 sell lavender in bunches. What one of our local lavender business farm does is let people cut their own. They demonstrate how 2 cut and then give them a little wooden mini like ruler that has 2 diff size if holes for one 2 put their stems in so they know how much.
Thank you for the valuable info.i may just put my chicken wire cage back over mine i used to protect them from feral cats etc and put a cover on maybe then it will be more protected with my mistake.
Your lavender makes me envious as I can nor meow lavender in SWFL...and also remembering when I could grow it when living in the Midwest. Oh, the fragrant memories!
Oh Nicole! I grew up weeding our flower beds at home - but that's nothin' compared to what your kids "get to" weed! They will have memories to talk about for sure. Love it!!
Your soil is soooo yummy! So I'm not at all surprised the lav is in luv w yur hill ! Who was it that wants to make the lavender products again? Your cousin? Your sister? Well, it's SOMEBODY... and they must be just OVER THE MOON for all that fabulous progress!!! Nicely done Doll. Nicely done. 💜 💜 💜
Oh, Nicole, that lavender is so lush and healthy. I can just imagine what a beautiful sea of purple waves you’ll have next year. It will be breathtaking…..and the fragrance! It will be the perfect place to go when your stressed, exhausted, or feeling a little down. It can be your rejuvenation field. So happy for you. Looking forward to seeing it in its full glory.
What a joyful surprise with the lavender. Nichole you have more than a green thumb. You have the golden touch. Beautiful. Wish we could smell along with you❤️
I planted 6munstead from seed three years ago., they are huge. And I started a tray of more this year. And those are the same size as yours. I am also creating a lavender row and I am using them by all my doorways, love the smell. 😍 I put in 20 more along the stairs on my hillside tiered garden and they are doing amazingly. Keep growing 🌱✌🏻
Looks amazing. Hidcote is my favorite! I love the dark purple blossoms. I also love your idea of putting grass down between the rows. It will be easy upkeep to just have to mow.
Great update! 8b here with crappy soil and constant drought (at 4,000 ft in San Diego County, CA). Tested a Vera, Munstead, and Spike. Munstead died. Then grew from seed and planted 100' rows of 66 Spike and 33 Vera. Rabbits aren't supposed to like it...but they wiped out all of the Vera, and severely chomped the Spike before I could get them protected! A year later the Spike rebounded. I am about to refill the Vera row with something. You may have motivated me towards Hidcote! 👍
Love your lavender field! I'm growing Grosso for the oil and Imperial Gem for the dried buds! I'm in 8b, and we normally get tons of Oregon rain, so I had to plant mind on sandy loam burms. Gardening and farming is definitely a lot of research and experimentation.
I heard/saw from a plant experts at Roberta's Unique Gardens not to cut back lavender until Spring. That's what I do because during winter it does die back on the top here in 7B zone. I have the phenomenal lavender and I love it. Smells Amazing! Thanks for sharing 👍.
It looks amazing!!! My Mom's been wanting to try this, I'll definitely show her your videos on it!!! So happy for you, they look incredible, soo much growth!!!💓
I want to plant a little lavender “hedge” to separate my designated yard from my farming area. I think it would be beautiful and smell amazing. Also, I love the “Farmers” jingle at the end. My husband and I own an actual Farmers insurance agency in TN! To funny. Wonderful video.
Congratulations!!! They look beautiful. I never had much luck with lavender. I would put in a plant or three and they never er really thrived. Within three years they would be gone. I used to blame the poor dog but I honestly don't know why. I can usually grow anything. After seeing your I am going to have to try again.
I also live in wis 4a/4b. Right on the edge. I wanted to see if it will survive here and if yes I am considering starting a farm. I’m near Frederic wi. My first 8 plants are near Hudson Wi. Fingers crossed over winter. I covered mine with frost cloth and did not prune back this first year. I got two bouquets the first season for my wife! lol.
I’m extremely impressed! I tried and failed with no less than 8 lavender plants this year 😭. The only thing that’s survived are some sprigs of lavender I grew from seed but they look like nothing right now haha
Great capture on Mr Bumble mid flight! 👏🐝 Zone 5 Canada here, I just finished cutting back lavender and that's all I ever do. But I think because we get a lot of lake effect snow in our area it acts as insulation. Glad to see your business booming this season. 💐👍🏻
I would doubt that cold would kill lavender on its own! At least Munstead and Hidcote are very tough plants.Poor drainage is the big problem and in winter moisture hangs around much longer. I don’t know the other type you are growing but if it is classified as a French lavender it may be “softer “. Good luck. It will be beautiful!👍
Zone 5 here, lost my potted lavender and chicago figs over winter. Want to see what you do and what I did wrong. Local lavender farm went under after super wet spring which is why though pot would be better.
I wonder if you could mulch it with crushed granite or something to cut down on weeds. I'm looking to start about 50 plants this year for my bee colonies. Thanks for your videos.

Hi Nicole. I’m a Michigan who has lavender to plant. I can’t really tell but, it looks like you planted plugs from a tray of 72. Is that correct? Or did you repot plugs to a larger pot before planting? Just wondering if my wee plugs can be planted directly to the field. They are hardened off. Any advice would be appreciated. Love your channel ❤️
Thats what I did we have heavy clay. Mine grew really big i started from seed i was shocked just hope I can keep it through winter learning when and how to prune
@@sangeetaaich01 I got some good advice from another on here to put leaves around base and cover with branch bows which is what I'm going to do. I'm looking forward to lots of flowers next year.
Everyone who grows it around here does or experiences major loss. It depends on the variety and your micro climate conditions. Lucky you! I left mine alone last year and only had one come back out of 20.
The reason one trims it back is to get a nice new flush closer 2 the ground. Also it doesn't get so woody. I do let a few of mine get woody but just for a certain look. One doesn't have 2 cut them back when they are small like hers now, just a trimming on the top third in the spring!
Why would you cut back the lavender plants before placing the frost cloth over them? ? Would be better to create a " tent" using the foliage to support the cloth and creating a warmer air space IMHO. Cut back in spring at the end of the heavy frosts that could damage the lavender.
Next thing you know will be lavender overflow and entire family making lavender sachets:)))
I'll be the first customer if so Nicole
