Don’t worry too much. It’s going to be all right. Lavender never looks good at the end of the winter 🥀 but easily comes back to life in the spring ☀️
I attempted three times to overwinter lavender in Kentucky. Three times I thought I killed it and dug it up.
It wasn’t until about five years after that fiasco I was at my sister’s house and commented on what I thought was a slew of dead lavender bushes. She said “It’s not dead. That’s what they look like after winter and I just cut them back.”
…. I about fell over. 🤣🤣🤣

Take heart! You will be surprised how many of your uncovered lavender comes back.
I’m zone 3 and your lavender will come back from the base, mine does!. Trim off the dead and don’t stress it!

@@paulineewert7492 No, never have. I do shovel snow on them from the walkway they are beside when it snows but most of the time they have minimal to no cover.
You are brave, Mio. You also give us hope. I'm in Zone 4a and its my first year to grow lavender. I had it covered (still covered today 3/25/22). We are forecasted to be in single digits next week and there is no more snow on the ground.
Lavender in our colder zones is a "hold my beer" moment LOL
Good drainage is the key to lavender surviving. You have good varieties ( mine are Hidcote). They have survived -20f! Love your posts👌

Yes! That's what I've heard. It's the moisture that will do them in. Not the cold. That's why I don't grow it even though it's heavenly!

I’m in the same growing zone but in Ontario Canada. I’ve never covered my lavender and we get about -30 c (-31 f?) I think something people don’t often consider when talking about growing zones is snowfall. In Ontario I get about 1 to 3 feet of snow by January and usually have about 5 feet through the coldest part of winter which really helps insulate the plants. I’m still impatiently waiting for the remaining snow to melt so I can start planting.

Your uncovered rows look like mine in northern Michigan While the snow does insulate, it also crushes them. But mine does always flush out again.

@@beckysocia1642 , Munstead, but Hidicote and Phenomenal are also cold tolerant. All three of these are zone 4.

@@beckysocia1642 I’ve never grown it from seed. But when I googled English lavender (vs French) THE SPRUCE site mentions zone 5 and includes some colder varieties. Good luck!
Thank you for being so real and for your videos of the weather challenges. Showing people how difficult it is at times to garden or farm. Not all those lavender plants are dead! I had three gardens in Missouri for 20 years and grew several types of lavender. (we get blasted with harsh winters here too) They will look dead but come back, give them some time. Lavender is a Mediterranean plant so it needs SUN to thrive. It may not even come back until when the sun is strong again. Even later than Spring blooms. Snap one of the twigs and if its green inside IT"S ALIVE!
My plants were always dead looking..zone 5. I cut off the tops and they always grew back. Drainage was my issue; alot of clay here. So they were good for a few yrs. Good varieties. Loved the first hoop house planting..very excited for you! Always make me smile...
I do know that pruning before fall helps them hunker down for winter.
I live in Estonia and we have it colder here but we never cover ours and they always survive.
If it can survive those winters then you know hers will be fine!
Nicole listen to this. I went out to Arnosky Farm (found them because of your channel) today and guess what they had. Just guess. Ok Lisianthus plants with buds on them. Could not believe it. My hands were like a flash scooping them up like a wild eyed gardener. White and purple. I got 50 plants. Most of them are already about 12-15 inches tall. Score. Never expected to find them there. Thank you so much for letting us know about that place. So grateful. Of course none of the lizzys I started from seed ever came up.
I am so jealous….I am in Zone 4 in Northern Michigan….and we still have snow on the ground….and snow falling!!
that hoophouse plastic is no joke too!!!! even with two people at my farm we’re havin a hard time getting the plastic tamed down LOL
They will come back. Mine always look like that not covered! Feel for u!! It’s a journey with many surprises!!
Be patient, the uncovered was in the elements. They will be fine. They will send up new shoots and be glorious. It is so early yet.
The wintered lavender will do better than the covered. Proper dormant is key. Also, less work and cost for you. Interested to see the outcome, I too am in NY- by lake Ontario.
I think many will come back just be patient…. Not easy but you are in a cold zone cover next year take the stress out. I love your gardening channel lots of hard work and tender care you give to your fields keep moving forward always forward intuition always trust! No mistakes lessons learned!

Gardening is a real humbling teacher, but I sure don’t forget the ones I learn. Given that lavender is a Mediterranean plant, I think it makes sense to cover it. New York is a colder environment. Good luck! I hope all the plants survive, even if some have been set back.
But Munstead and Hidcote are English bred varieties that are suited to English weather.
@@Lotsielots I learned that most of Britain is in USDA zone 8 with some areas being in zone 7 or even zone 9. I find that surprising. Anyway, it might have been too cold or too wet, who really knows. My 8a growing zone is VERY humid, and I have a terrible time growing lavender, while Laura on Garden Answer grows it beautifully in her climate. Such is gardening. My guara grows nicely though, as does my cuphea.
I live in zone5b, sometimes 4, and my lavender does come back (uncovered)! It is slow to wake up, compared with other perennials, so I always think it's dead, but then mid summer I have great blooming lavender. Don't give up on it! Love your channel!

Hi Nicole, I know it's scary but it will come back. I'm in Montreal, and I have lavender - not covered - it comes back gloriously. The snow really does protect it. I am amazed at the ones that you covered though. Seems like that might be a way to get blooms earlier - which would make it worth doing.

My lavender hedge always looks awful and similar to your uncovered lavender in spring, but I never think anything about it. It’s came back fine year after year. It’ll do fine. It’s still pretty early for it to start showing new growth.
I remember my Dad buying 100 lavender plugs of the back of Parade magazine. They were so tiny, all fit in a brown lunch bag. We eventually ended up with 8 great adult plants. Took 3 or so years for them to get to full size.
That’s crazy, I would have thought snow on top of a row cover would have crushed the plants a bit, but they looked fantastic! I don’t have to cover mine but I’m right on the edge of zones 5/6 up here in Nova Scotia. I bet they’ll mostly pull through 😊
I'm in Alberta about a zone 3b to 4 and my lavender is still buried under a huge snow drift. I'm hoping it will be alive again this year. So far lots of snow is working. The flower bed the lavender are in gets buried with snow from blowing winds all winter. It's melting everywhere in the yard, but that one area has a mountain of snow. Worked last year, so this year I have started 60 more lavender seedlings, and next year I might even try doing long rows if burying the plants under lot of snow works. I'l just have to shovel snow onto them all winter, because we can get warm Chinook winds coming over the Rockies, which is really nice, but it melts snow.
At the end of each winter cut them back in turned bowl shape but avoid cutting old wood. 👍

We have some that were left uncovered as well (just 5 plants or so) and it definitely doesn't look good!

We also have that zippered end on our cat tunnel. If you haven't done so put a pipe into bottom of zippered end and we pounded a bent over piece of rebar to hold pipe into ground. Works the charm when the winds get a whippin and will build a real 2 x 4 end wall with door this spring in upstate NY. Your farm is looking good! 🌱💐👍

I've got a lavender patch and in zone 5 which I don't understand because here in Vermont our temperatures get as cold as you BUT anyways because it's only March the uncovered looks like mine always do this time of year so don't do anything to the uncovered lavender until you see for sure early summer if it's dead happy gardening

I garden in Zone 6. This year we had four weeks of lows under 20 degrees, dipping under zero several times, and I'm worried about my lavender. Some of it doesn't look like it's going to bounce back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I am in zone 5a next to the Atlantic ocean. They love full sun, well drained soil. I also cut mine down to a few inches in the spring so the plants don't get woody. They grow back beautiful each year.

These lavender will come back AND you can propagate by cuttings! I have Munstead and Elegance from seed i started 3 years ago. They are tough buggers . Zone 5 mid Ontario

You’re so funny! 🤣🤣🤣 I didn’t cover my lavender or Russian Sage, and I admit I’m a tad stressed about it too 🤣🤣🤣 They look like yours with no green 🤪
Now, we didn't see the 'dead' lavenders very well but I wouldn't worry too much about not seeing any green on them yet. I have many variety of lavenders and they usually look really crummy after the winter. They look basically dead, the branches white/grey, no more foliage. I trim them either at the end of fall or begining of spring (depends on mood). When the wheather warms up, new green growth appears. To check whether they are alive or dead, you could cut a branch. If the stem is green/white on the inside, there is still life in that branch and you have nothing to worry about! If the branch is dry, well then sorry.
No worries Nicole!! It will come back! My mungstead I planted under the eves of my house came back year after year. It started being a running joke with my husband....he'd always think it was dead. But I gotta say, you're right, it totally looks better under that frost cloth!!!
I’ve killed thousands of lavender plants on our farm😬 and judging by what my dead plants looked like, yours look great. Even the uncovered ones.

We cover our lavender but they died from lack of water incredibly not cold temps.
We started our lavender farm in the Utah desert and they didn’t get any snow cover or water during the winter.
I’m thinking of writing a book called 101 ways to kill lavender😂

I am encouraged by your determined spirit when faced with struggles. I have a hoop house made with cattle panels and a chicken wire roof just for our short summer growing season. .My summer weather nemesis is hail and the wire p I live at 7200 feet in Zone 5b in Colorado. Two Winters ago the snow collapsed my summer hoop house. My hubby was able to raise it up with vertical PVC pipes! Also the deer grocery shop average all year long. I finally braved all the naysayers regarding growing lavender here and planted Hidicote, and Munstead as you did. I can finally see them as my snow is melting. Looking sad but I can see a wee bit of green at the crown. So like you I am hopeful but I also plan to protect mine next winter.
Munstead is only to zone 5, those you will have to protect in below zone 5, the rest is zone 2 and zone 4 hardiness don’t need to cover them, I don’t cover those but I do cut them back in the spring so new growth and it doesn’t turn woody.
I never cover any of mine, I’m zone 3/4 northern Canada. Hidcote and Munstead come back every year and also self seed everywhere. The worst thing for them is wet crowns, gritty gravely soil with good drainage will help them the most.

Hidcote and Munstead are the most beautiful deep blue purple, the best types from England.

I'm optimistic that your lavender will be fine as long as you have well draining soil!
Small triangular flaps cut into the plastic might have eliminated the plastic from pulling out from under the sand bags. If you decide to put it the back door you can also leave the doors open when high winds are expected.
It might be okay! I've had some look like that and then got repeat lavender blooms from them😳
Hope everything works out ok in your lavender beds. My sage always looks like that after winter. I cut it back and I flushed out into a huge bush. Hoping your lavender does too. 😊💕
I think that lavender will come back. I like in Canada east coast. Zone 6a and never covered mine. Always looks dead at first.

Your lavender will be fine!!! I'm in Zone 5b and get heavy snowfall. Looks dead every spring, but it always comes back!
I am in zone 5a/5b in Cheyenne WY and I have 1...count it...1 Lavender plant that is outside in my herb garden that's about a 10 X 12 ft space. We have -30 or better temps in the Winter at times. So bad that rhododendron have a horrible time trying to make it. This Lavender plant comes back every darn year without fail and it has been there more than 7 years. No cover.
I am in a colder climate than you. I don't know about the different lavender varieties but I know it can survive here without any problem and without protection

Thank you for doing that experiment. I live in zone 9 in Texas and we occasionally get freezes. I have lavender growing this year. I'll be covering mine if the forecast calls for freezing temps.

Snow does work. However it has to stay completely covered with snow the entire time it's cold/winter. Otherwise when the snow melts it will expose the plant to too much cold.
Look up Russian lemons if you want a cool theory on this.
True, and the melts also expose the roots to too much water.
Just for giggles, could you tell us which varieties you covered and which you left exposed? I had some lavender years ago and it looked awful every spring (zone 6b) but I cut it back to within an inch of its life and it came back every year (over a decade) until the raised bed it was in fell apart and I chucked it. Not a lavender expert but if I remember correctly, it needs to be cut back annually so it doesn’t get woody in which case, it will slowly cease blooming.

I had munstead and Phenomenal lavender along my 20ft walkway. It was doing great. The plants were huge and I was going to divide them in that spring. Nope, all but one bit the dust during the winter. I had never covered them or done anything special for 4 years. Everyone loved it and commented on the smell as they walked to my front door. I’ve replanted but I’ve learned a lesson too.

I live in 4b Canada., we still have a foot of snow.
My lavender are not covered., I have never covered them... I only grow English Lavender though. I do add a lot of straw/pine needles around them in the fall for extra mulch. We get 2-four foot and sometimes more in drifts of snow in the winter months.
And like yours, They look crappy for the first month of spring but they are hardy and spring back with tons of flowers shortly thereafter.
I can see the benefits though., they obviously benefited. Maybe different varieties/ different hardy zones? Or are they all the same?
I’m adding a few hedges this year., I have 50new plants waiting for that soil to defrost. 🌱💗🙏🏻

As soon as all chance of frost is gone then I do what Laura Garden Answer does and cuts them right down. I'm zone 5 Canada I never cover. They are all dead looking every year, I prune them and they grow bushy every year.

You should just sprinkle some seeds where the questionable lavender plants are. They grow pretty quick. I did mine using winter sowing last year and they survived our -30's this year.
I live in the equivalent of american sone 2 or 3, i have one lavender Bush that doesnt do very well, but I had lavender in my old home that did well- it was planted in gravel. I travelled the lavender trail, lavender museum in provence, were all lavender is grown 900 m above sealevel, on lower altitudes they grow lavendin that is the cheap stuff they use in soap and washingpowder etc. Lavendeur is a high altitude plant, and they grow the pure Lavendula Angustifolia
Hi! I was wondering if you could share an update on the lavender farm after the winter. This will be the first year for our lavender farm in zone 5a but we border quite close to 4b and unsure if we should or shouldn't cover. Growing phenomenal this season and hoping to add in other varieties next season. Also what type of Dewitt fabric did you use, torn between pro 5 and sunbelt and not sure if you have any suggestions! Oh wow. Thank you so much for showing this! I have a lavender that looks like your covered plants and I assumed it was dying (I’m in zone 7….so it wasn’t that cold). I think it doesn’t get enough drainage or enough sun…so I may still move it but at least I know I’m not alone.
I'm pretty sure all of your lavender will be fine. I used to live in South Dakota (zone 4) and grew munstead lavender and it came back every year. Most people cut it back anyway to a couple of inches.
Ok don't take them out!!! Give it a full week of 70 and up and take siccors and cut like 2 at the bottom like way bottom and if there's color there gonna come back great and you can even cut higher of on a stem and there may be color BUT don't make a choice unless it's at the bottom of the stem AND at least a week of sun and hot weather which is 70 for me lol. My mum's that I planted in October there's green all at the bottom of my plants!!! The stems are sooo dead and hollow dried but the root of the plant is Brite green!! I wonder if I'll have mum's this summer 😂😂😂. I think your lavender will be ok!! I'm praying they come back! They didn't factor that we get freezing freezing winds with no snow!!!! Yes snow is good but ONLY when it's covered completely in snow BEFORE and at every freezing negative dry days.
I'm in zone 5b a couple of years ago my mom helped me plant 2 lavender plants in my flower bed they lived through the first year but second winter died. Planted a couple more last year I didn't cover it hope I don't regret if they lived I will try covering next winter
Don’t freak out we are in zone 6b after many years it looks dead but it comes back. Don’t touch it or trim it leave it dead until it starts growing
